Last night w/ HBR and then RAQ
« on: October 06, 2007, 05:35:56 pm »
HBR
Oct 05, 2007
Belly Up Tavern (Solana Beach, CA)
Silas, Guns Or Butter, Beneath The Blossoms, Golden Days, My Back Pages*^, Banjo Rock N\' Roll*#, Firefly, Evolution% > ***** Put The Kettle On% > Evolution%, Kissin\' Cousins

* first time played
^ Bob Dylan tune; w/ Todd Sheaffer (Railroad Earth) on vocals, Nat on drums, and Erik on dobro
# Erik tune
% w/ John Skehan (Railroad Earth) on mandolin and Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) on fiddle

- opened for Railroad Earth

Phenomenal set by the band. Sounding tighter than ever. I love those guys. They are trying to have their bus driver Andy learn lights and so I was asked to give him a few tips and with the kid\'s enthusiasm he will be a fast learner.
As HBR is pretty much the only "new/jamgrass" band I listen to I was not going to hang around for RRE and responded to the texts callin\' me to Winston\'s.

RAQ
10.05.07
Winstons
San Diego, CA

Set I: Led Boots&, Down Low, Ventriloquist, Hot Lunch, Guilty Pleasures, Confuzor, Mean Streets@, Boom, Comin\' Home, Barometric Whether, Jump@, Back To The Head, Premium

Set II: When I Come Around^, Welcome To The Donkey Show, Crazy Tonie, CHUCK, Silhouette, Just Kissed My Baby*$, Sneakin\' Sally Through The Alley*!, Bag It Out*, Whipping Post*#

E: Wax*
Just What I Needed*~

& Jeff Beck
@ Van Halen
^ Green Day
* w/ Robin Moxey
$ The Meters
! Robert Palmer
# Allman Brothers
~ The Cars

So I got there midway into Down Low and saw my friend Jim. Grabbed him and went to smoke a boule. Prepared now I took my place in front of Jay which elicited a huge grin.
I felt Chris was playing pretty sloppy for most of the first set which probably led me to lose interest in the show and hang out more with friends.

Second set was smokin\' up until Robin Moxey got up and while most will say the rest of the show was nuts I couldn\'t tell ya because I had by that time made my way out. I like RAQ but tonight just wasn\'t it for me.

I did turn some friends of mine that were seeing RAQ for the first time onto some Breakfast discs as they had not heard them before either.
I told them if they like RAQ at all they would probably LOVE The Breakfast.

Not for me. They really don\'t grab me at all. I know ALOT of folk into them but I don\'t hear anything that special. I would rather listen to HBR for bluegrass based jam music.

i agree about rre. i\'ve given them a bunch of tries, but everytime i feel like they\'re holding back or just not willing to actually step it up. their sax player is about the only one who can hold my attention for any length of time. everyone else usually just underwhelms me. its a shame, because so many folks dig \'em, but for me they are decidedly meh.

any links to download the HBR 10/5 show. I sure would love to hear that Dylan cover. Personally, I like both HBR adn RRE. THey are definitely up there with some of my favorite jam band related bands around nowdays. Haven\'t really gotten to interested in RAQ yet, but I am sure they are killer too.

There was a taper there so I\'ll keep an eye out. As for RAQ, they are not killer. They are good  and worth a listen though.

Hot Buttered Rum is playing free at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in SF today.  I went up there on my bike yesterday but quickly left since the crowds were way too big to even move around.  So I probably won\'t be going back for HBR even though I wanted to check them out.

For those of us in the NE, the HBR boys are playing thurs 11/29 & Friday 11/30 @ The Stone Church; Sat Dec 1st @ Higher Ground; and Sun Dec 2nd @ Iron Horse.

I also think I remember Phil saying they were trying to get them at Daniel St again for their Fall Tour...really looking to do at least the 2 Church shows and the Iron Horse...maybe Brahlington if they don\'t play CT or NYC.

Love these guys.
