My Morning Jacket?
« on: December 28, 2006, 06:38:09 pm »
I read in some main stream music mag ( I think Spin) that they were in the top 10 albums of \'06.  I keep hearing their name, but have never heard or seen them, does anyone know anything about them?  Worth picking up an album?  (I generally dont\' listen to music online, or I\'d check it out myself)

I have all their albums.

And I\'m not a fan. The vocals and guitars are drowning in such a thick sea of reverb, it really sounds like crap to me. It\'s not like they have a shitty recording, its the way they want it to sound. But I don\'t get it.

I also don\'t get how they are somehow associated with the "jamband" scene. Whatever, give it a listen for yourself, a lot of people do seem to like it.

just curious, if you dont\' like them, why did you keep buying their albums?

It\'s official: MMJ are the greatest act in jamband land. Why? As this skull exploding live disc proves, it\'s because they know head music involves more than just noodly interplay.  It\'s about guitar textures deep enough to get lost in, straightforward melodies that do directly to your pleasure center, and vocals- in this case, Jim James\' glorious high tenor- that go straight to your heart.  And not always gently: James unleashes shouts here that rate with Roger Daltrey\'s epochal holler in "Won\'t Get Fooled Again." In the end, MMJ aren\'t really a "jamband"- just a hairy, old fashioned rock outfit that does everything right.

Because Bittorrent just makes it so damn easy

Yeah I read a lot of reviews like that, which is why I decided to check out their stuff.

But after listening to it I think the singer sounds like a bad ripoff of Flaming Lips dude, sounding like its sung underwater because the reverb is so outta control. The guitar is occasionally decent, but mostly sloppy and way over reverbbed as well. Reviewers love to contrast music against "noodly" jambands but really its a stupid comparison because My Morning Jacket has nothing to do with jambands or even remotely sounding like one besides the fact they played at Bonnaroo.

Listening to their albums there are a couple songs that are kinda cool, 90% of it is staight up boring and I forget I\'m even listening to music at all because it fails to grab my attention, and a few tracks are just painful to listen to.

But like I said and you already know, a lot of people seem to like it and they get a lot of good press and reviews, so maybe I just don\'t get it. But there is a whole lot of damn good music that I do get, so who knows. I can only say download it and check it out for yourself. Bittorrent makes it so damn easy ;)

....

IMO for Spin to say MMJ is the greatest act in Jamband land is simply a slap in the face to bands like Widespread Panic, Breakfast, moe., and countless other bands that not only are faaaarrrr better, but are actually "jambands". Whoever wrote that review must have something against the genre.

yeah, dark and reverbby. their album silo was recorded in one, because they liked the reverb in there. i\'ve got their latest album and their first one (i think) and they\'re definitely mood music. when i want to put something on that i don\'t really have to pay a lot of attention to, but can if i feel like it, then they\'re one of the bands i consider. sorta like wilco, but different. because i like wilco more. but a lot of the same folks that like wilco seem to like mmj, too. i dunno, i\'ve seen \'em live once, but don\'t really remember much about it... that could be their fault or mine, though... :stoned:

they are definately not a jamband and i dont get why they get placed in that category.  i like them.  if youre into the southerny rock type + haunting (not scary haunting) melodies, then check them out, but their sound really is kinda hard to describe.  the song that got me to like them was "one big holiday" off of the album "it still moves."  they are good live, but they really dont jam at all, they just rock out.  i actually saw them open for wilco so i get the relation.

They are playing next to the venue I\'m going to tomorrow night.  I hope they aren\'t too popular or it will be more difficult to find parking in the neighborhood.
