CNN: Scientists teleport two different objects
POSTED: 4:36 p.m. EDT, October 4, 2006

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Beaming people in Star Trek fashion is still in the realms of science fiction but physicists in Denmark have teleported information from light to matter bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality.

Until now scientists have teleported similar objects such as light or single atoms over short distances from one spot to another in a split second.

But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter.

"It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects. One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium," Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday.

The experiment involved for the first time a macroscopic atomic object containing thousands of billions of atoms. They also teleported the information a distance of half a meter but believe it can be extended further.

"Teleportation between two single atoms had been done two years ago by two teams but this was done at a distance of a fraction of a millimeter," Polzik, of the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Quantum Optics, explained.

"Our method allows teleportation to be taken over longer distances because it involves light as the carrier of entanglement," he added.

Quantum entanglement involves entwining two or more particles without physical contact.

Although teleportation is associated with the science-fiction series Star Trek, no one is likely to be beamed anywhere soon.

But the achievement of Polzik\'s team, in collaboration with the theorist Ignacio Cirac of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, marks an advancement in the field of quantum information and computers, which could transmit and process information in a way that was impossible before.

"It is really about teleporting information from one site to another site. Quantum information is different from classical information in the sense that it cannot be measured. It has much higher information capacity and it cannot be eavesdropped on. The transmission of quantum information can be made unconditionally secure," said Polzik whose research is reported in the journal Nature.

Quantum computing requires manipulation of information contained in the quantum states, which include physical properties such as energy, motion and magnetic field, of the atoms.

"Creating entanglement is a very important step but there are two more steps at least to perform teleportation. We have succeeded in making all three steps -- that is entanglement, quantum measurement and quantum feedback," he added.

*meh* I\'ve known about teleportation for awhile... I\'ve always pictured myself on a tropical, deserted island while at work, and somehow, I get taken away there! :chin: the mind is an amazing thing...

will I loss some weight if I begin teleportation?

Imagine when (if) it ever does become a reality, the global impact: no need for any of the conventional shipping methods anymore (trucks, planes, trains). They would still be around as most new technologies are more expensive and unpredictable, but eventually there would be no need for shipping or driving. The entire shipping industry would crumble world wide. Then there would be no need for oil production in the amounts it is now. Then that industry would also crumble. Now you have millions of people out of work and pissed off. They make no money, so they have no money to put back into the economy because they are not buying anything. Supply goes way up over demand. Prices drop to compensate, but no one is buying because we are in a recession. More people loose jobs because even at the lowered prices, the companies can\'t sell their goods. Recession turns to depression and many people are foreclosed on their homes because they can\'t afford them anymore. The stock market crashes as most of the major players stocks are sold en mass by the public to get hard cash that they can hold onto in case of emergency. Because there is not enough paper money to back all this, the government starts printing more, even though there is not enough gold supply to compensate the new money. The dollar slips lower in the world market. The only one who can afford their property any more is the government of China, who has been slowly purchasing vast amounts of land in the US for the last 15+ years. Now, china switches thier market to the euro from the dollar and the dollar is in the red. China then calls in all money owed to it through loans on the market and the market, already crashed, crashes again beyond repair. Americans do the only thing they have left. They riot nation wide. The government is over thrown. Now all the pieces are in place. China attacks the US, who without a stable government in place, and a weak populus due to starvation of the people, are unable to fight off the attack.

And we have not even tried to transport people yet, this is just with drygoods.

jesus christ, zappa.... you may want to grab a big sign and pick out a street corner! The End is Nigh!!!

especially if you consider that america has been moving towards a leisure and service based economy for 20 years or so, the loss of certain industries isn\'t nearly as dire as you see it. yes, the teamsters will be pissed, but beyond that, all of the products that you think won\'t be able to be afforded will actually end up cheaper as shipping becomes free and instantaneous. and new industry will certain grow to replace the lost ones. the market abhors a vaccuum, after all. so, cheaper products, far more free time, ease of travel (thus connecting the globalized world more effeciently and encouraging new business concepts heretofore unthought), fewer \'neccessity\' expenditures (cars, brake jobs, etc), increased global interconnectedness.... it seems like a damn good way to even out the world\'s disparities, to me.

oh, I know, I was polling off of several sources to write that. However, the point stands that much like the industrial revolution, there were some really pissed off people who found out their only job function was no longer something that was needed and they had to addapt. When they can\'t adapt, they riot. When one power sees a weakness in another, they usually use it to over take the weaker power and assimilate them. I\'m not saying that will happen, just an example of how things can dominoe off of each other.

History will always repeat itself.
