Complete Spring Tour 2004
« on: June 03, 2004, 04:55:48 pm »
I am just about done uploading the shows from the spring tour that tim approved to be tradable. they will be imported into archive.org\'s database this weekend. Back in February and March I promised several people who chipped in for the microphone fund that i would make sure they all got the recordings. Please contact me if you have not been taken care of yet.

the tour fits on 6 DVD-Rs in FLAC format. Todd, Mark, and either Freddie or diana are all set and they will have their own copies of the original FLAC files. If any of them are not archiving the FLAC files and only burning audio discs i am sure one of them will trade the 6 FLAC DVD-Rs to you for blanks. I know not everyone archives the FLAC files so there is no reason to burn 6 DVDs for everyone when we can just pass them around. If you have a hard drive with 30 GB of free space  that you can give me i can just transfer them directly to the hard drive. That is actually the easiest way for me to distribute them, but i will still burn the tour onto DVD-Rs if thats easier for you. It would be nice to work it out so that the only people who need to give me DVD-Rs are the people who plan on archiving the FLAC files. If we pass them around everyone will save money that way because DVD-Rs are very expensive unless you buy in bulk.

ill do it if you send 6 blank dvd-rs to me, but you still have to learn how to burn flac files . its easy and it should not be a problem.

if you run nero as your burning program, alls you have to do is drop and drag the flac files, and itll automatically convert them to wav before burning..wish i knew this trick a year ago..lots of important time wasted converting flac>wav for no good reason!!
take the E to the A to the D...you\'ll be all set

You may need to get a plug-in from nero to do this  - if you can get in. I have had many problems trying to get to their site to download it.

On the subject of show formats, I notice the last pb show I got was in ape format. I suppose this is the problem with technology - it moves on; I know APE compresses very well (50%), but I wish we could all use the same format. At least Monkey Audio is as easy to use as flac frontend/mwact, but does it work on macs as well as pcs? To me, macs are an alien technology. Does anyone know what the full compatibility list is for formats on mac and pc? I know flac and shn work on both, but mkw doesn\'t on macs. Also macs can\'t use EAC (Ithink??)

The plugin comes with the flac frontend, so if you installed nero before you installed the flac frontend you should be all set already. If you install nero after flac, you may have problems.

Ape is cool, but its more of a hassle than flac or shn. some pb shows from 2002 were encoded in ape, then flac really started to get more popular. I started using flac because you can make id tags so the title and all the info for the songs show up in winamp if you put it in. plus the plugin for nero saves you so much time because you no longer need to decode the files to burn audio.

Got the problem sorted now - I uninstalled nero to upgrade so got the order the wrong way. Will try reinstalling in the correct order.

I agree, flac would seem to be the encoder of choice. If you change the default level from 5 to 8 you can get some really small files, which take slightly longer to decode, but take less space and b/width.
