Recording problem - public thanks to chrisf
« on: September 07, 2008, 11:41:17 am »
So, I know it can be avoided, but does anyone know how I can fix a show I recorded on MD without a battery box? Dreaded brickwalling struck again.

I have uploaded a track here:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ipr0wi

I know it\'s 40MB as a flac file, but if any filters etc be added, it will be easier to see what has happened to the non-affected parts. if someone can do something with it then post/pm how to do it, I\'d be very grateful as I believe I was the only person at the Rhythm Festival smart enough to even try to tape Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circle of Dreams, who by the way, spoke very kindly of the band at Woodstock several years ago - may be something to do with the 2003 Funky Bill\'s tour tee I was wearing at the time in the hotel bar after the show.

And if someone can recommend a cheap battery box to avoid this sort of thing in the future...

gandalf murphy?  i think i know the guy in that band.  the one with the hat, you know?   i think i may have jammed with him at this barbecue where i grew up...  steve hark\'s bbq.  harkfest, i think he called it...  are they any good?  i always thought they were just some local band...

as for the recording, i\'d say roll off everything under 100hz and search around for where the meat and potatoes of that boominess is and suck it the hell out.  high pass at around 100 and then perhaps a shelf <500hz...  i think with some surgery, that could be a listenable recording.

Thanks, chris - even better than I could have hoped.

Will up it to sendspace tonight and send you the link by PM.

And as for recording gear, it was a cheap Sony mic and MZ-N710 MD, but recording position was on the floor in my bag, the mic sticking out. Wasn\'t sure how tight security was (open taping at festivals is unknown here), so had to super stealth it. My set up seems to work fine with acoustic stuff, but amplified is a no-no. However, as it was outdoors and I was a way back, thought I\'d give it a try.

What was annoying was that a taper I know arrived just after GM finished and then spent the whole weekend with his Edirol in his shirt pocket with the LEDs glowing red for all to see and he wasn\'t questioned once. Even more annoying was that I later saw others with video cameras, but no-one else seems to have captured the opening GM set in any shape or form. So glad I videoed their second show and hopefully will get the lossless recording of that to synch up.

I\'ll also have a go at Jim\'s suggestions, though remastering stuff is all new stuff to me, so won\'t be any good.

Jim, I wouldn\'t be surprised that you jammed with them somewhere in the North East too as they seem to make aliving from small festivals etc. And yes, they are good! Possibly the band of the festival - the Rhythm festival message board is full of praise for them and such was the reaction of British attendees that their sales on CDbaby took a huge rise and they sold out of everything!

Well, just to explain the thread title name change. Chris has already done the business on thison thsi for me in Protools and it sounds so much better. Yes, as chris mailed me, so the brickwalling still sounds like a basketball bouncing when Tony hits the kick drum hard, but the overall sound is just so much brighter to the point I can listen to this now.

So sincere thanks again to chris for his help, and also to Jim for his suggestions  -we really do have the best fan family around.
