So I\'m trying to quit smoking....
« on: June 22, 2006, 01:23:51 pm »
I haven\'t had a cigarette since Sunday morn, and last night was the first time I had really wanted one.  I generally have no problem not smoking mon-fri afternoon, but fri night thru sun morn gets really really hard.  So I guess what I\'m starting this for is to ask if anyone has any good methods (other than nicotine patches and gum) for avoiding smoking in a group of heavy smokers.  Not avoiding the smokers but avoiding the smoking for myself, the weekends are always when I break down.  I\'ll go a week without and then go to som esort of B\'Fam event and all my progress is shit canned.

Oh and the fact that I love to smoke doesn\'t help either.

I have no advice for you, but your post made me light up another even though I just had one about 45 minutes ago.

if there was an easy way to beat the habit, everyone would be doing it. good luck, I know exactly what you mean. I am a weekend smoker and thats about it. But, I also haven\'t been addicted to cigs at anytime in my life.
Love many, trust few and don\'t be late.

Me!, I commend you.

After smoking for 11 years, I haven\'t had one in 6 months.  And dude, I was ADDICT-TED!  I also really enjoyed it, and if they discover a painless cure cancer I\'ll start again tomorrow! Pointless daydreaming aside...

The best advice I can give you, is change your routine.  You are through the worst part of the physical addiction by now, so it\'s a matter of breaking habits.  What really helped me is that I quit a week before I went on vacation, and the whole different atomsphere got me through the death trap that is days 5-15.
Also, I must confess, I use a crutch.  I bought a box of cigars, I smoke about 2 a month.  It really helps with the whole mental "holy fuck, you mean to tell me I can NEVER SMOKE AGAIN!?!?!?"  It\'s relaxing, I look forward to them, and their stronger nature completely kills the urge for a while.  They\'re cumbersome to carry, and awkward in most social situations so you\'re not likely to pick up a new addiction.
Lastly, if you lapse, don\'t give up!  I tried and failed about 20 times before my recent success.

That is such a big part of it, so much mental, but it\'s also having something to do with my mouth/hands (and since i dont\' have a woman....;) ) I do have tea tree toothpicks wich help with the oral fixation, and honestly smoking herb helps sometimes, it relaxes me enough so I don\'t think about it....

but again the real test is the weekend, throwing in other various substances and setting makes me wanna smoke

You could have cigarettes that come in a black pack, with a skull and a cross bone on the front, called tumors and smokers would be lined up around the block going, "I can\'t wait to get my hands on these fucking things! I bet you get a tumor as soon as you light up!

The filters the best part. That\'s where they put the heroine. Only us real good smokers know that fucking secret

tea tree sticks.  always have one in your mouth, and always know you intend to not smoke, and constantly remind yourself why you want to quit, even when you\'re not thinking about smoking.

Exercise and LOTS of water. Take a weekend off from "hangin\' with the B\'Fam" if you think you might have to. When I quite for that 21 months, it started with a ski trip out west at an altitude you have trouble breathing in even if you\'re a non-smoker!! Started with the patch three weeks before going. After two days out there I didn\'t need a patch anymore. Totally break your habits!! Go for a hike/ swim. And from what I\'ve learned from prior times trying to quit, don\'t replace the cig with anything!!!! Just keeps your mind wanting to hold onto something!

Don\'t give up and good luck!!!! I\'m going to try again very soon!!!

also, take it one day at a time, dont think about quitting forever.  no one can handle forever, but handling just today is doable.  sometimes even take it one hour at a time or even a few minutes at a time.  the craving will pass.  just dont smoke today.  worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

/\\/\\/\\/\\ I was just about to say that some exercise helps too.  Really helps dispose of some of that nervous energy that comes with cravings.

Although, this from the guy who used to smoke during high school track meets and immediately after college rugby games.

Atleast Toad\'s has no good place to have one, you must leave your beer behind.

Mandler, glad to hear you have decided to quit smoking after enrolling in a remedial 4th grade health class!!  ;)

I was just thinking about smoking this morning, as I\'ve noticed there is a low percentage of smokers in my office (a couple out of 100 is pretty impressive).

Good luck to you!
