1) that was hysterical, wolf!

2) as for rust and tricky ways, yes, they are much more mainstream pop-y, but as was said above, they are needed in the repetoire. i\'ve been thinking about bands and what\'s happening with the jamband world in general lately, and th thing that jumps out at me most, is that the late, great bands that had the biggest followings all had several genres and styles of songs in their bag. they always sounded like that band doing that genre, but the diversity of what the audience experienced each night added to the why so many folks liked them. lately, it seems, bands are zeroing in on subgenres and sticking to them. the trance-y bands, the bluegrass-y bands, the space-y bands... but you don\'t really hear many bands that can play an old appalachian ballad, a straight ahead rocker, a deep and atmospheric exporatory jam, a folk tune, a jazzy tune.... the dead is, of course, the best example of this, but phish (especially in the earlier years) works, too. one of the best parts about the breakfast is that you do get diversity in what they play, though not yet nearly as much. so, are tw & rust the best examples of those styles? no. but they are great first steps to adding more to the total sound of the breakfast. which is a direction i think dropping the psychedelic showed they wanted to head in, and which i think is confirmed by the shift in style of live play and variety in styles of the latest batch of tunes. they don\'t want to play the same things the same ways every nihgt, i\'m sure, and that will only helping the band i the long run.

3) hi joe.

One of the many reasons I love this band is exactly that...you never know what they are going to play, nor how they may play it!!! They constantly mix it up!!! Never generic and stale in any way. So many bands today have "that sound" which they carry through most of their songs and it\'s boring as hell to listen to.
Light travels faster than sound. That is why some people appear bright...until you hear them speak.

The Breakfast do not have much variety in their songwriting.

Rust and TW are examples of them trying to go outside of what they do best. TW fails imo because it sounds fake coming from this band. It shows they can write a bluesy tune but anyone coming to a Breakfast show is not coming for the blues. Rust succeeds slightly better due to the jam space built into the song.

Great current different, slower"changeup" songs by The Bfast are Late and the Great and Good Things.
They should bring back Vera st. and Question Mark for more of this.

The Breakfast have just as much a niche sound as UM or tDB. They have yet to expand their songwriting to include multigenre setlists. The band does have a few tricks such as the reworking of LoveLake and their ability to cover others songs faithfully in whatever genre the song may be in. This has yet to translate into truly varied setlists musically.

The Breakfast is still all about jams and not songs which to tell you the truth may be the biggest hurdle they will ever have.

When John Mark Carr came out, I thought to myself, "Oh my god, that\'s Joe in 20 years!"  Now Joe might be teaching children, just like John Mark Carr.  My prediction is well on its way to fulfillment.

Uhhh Joe, looks like the drugs are wearing off again...I hope you took some more before that interview.

Interviewer: So Mr. Boncek, why do you want to work here?

Joe: Walking through the dark and unseasonably warm streets of Burlington last night I indulged myself in the company\'s annual report. I just can\'t deny myself the joy I get out of this company. Sure I\'ve moved on in my career and I don\'t exactly agree with the direction you\'re going, but I still think this company has something REALLY special. It\'s like you\'re able to tap into this lost 70\'s energy that gives you a somewhat antiquated business strategy, of course this is meant as a compliment. I\'ve tried to denounce this company multiple times for a pleorethra of reasons, many personal, others unfounded and irrational. but in the end I can\'t deny that this company gives me multiple euphoric peak experiences, nor can I deny that the 401(K) plan and employee discount has turned into comfort food for my psyche whenever I get depressed. I truly hope things change for this company on a professional level. I personally want to see you succeed and be able to sell more and more product of semi recent caliber (I won\'t lie, I think the new Widgetizer 2000 and the new Widget Deluxe are possibly the two worst/generic products you have). I meant for this interview to be longer but I have to go to a rock concert....

Interviewer:  Thanks, Joe.  Don\'t call us, we\'ll call you.

i dont know how i missed this one the first time around but kudos to the wolf for one of the best posts in intraweb messageboard history.

Lets hope it stays that way! I\'m into plenty of bands that are all about "the song".... not aware of any bands that jam as ill as psychedelic B

OK where is the variety though? All the songs listed offer no variety other than Ep1 and Dig.
All the other tunes are the same basically just vehicles for Tim to play as many notes as possible. Oh and now to deedle on the keys. The basic songwriting model is the same for all of them.

Yeah well if they do stay all about the jam they will remain the best kept secret in NE.

I dunno Leith, I must be like a musical genius or something,... (well thats already known, but anyway), there\'s a whole lotta difference between those songs I mentioned... I could have picked so many more examples too.

Just because 2 songs both have one or two sections that can be and are jammed the hell out doesn\'t make it the same song.

Certain bands outside of the northeast may be more song-focused and somehow have gotten more successful in a brief period of time... but that doesn\'t stop them from being wankers.

My point is The Breakfast do not write songs with the song in mind it seems. Most every Breakfast song revolves around the jam.

The few that do not are rare indeed.

The biggest complaints I and others hear about the band is that all they do is jam. This has been gone over infinitum on this board.
The fact that songs like the Late... and Good Things have been written points to more song focused writing but these songs will still be a rarity in Bfast setlists that\'s just plain to hear.

Funny you say that\'s the biggest complaint you hear...... I\'ve never heard anyone say "all they do is jam" but among my friends we all give Breakfast the biggest props for jamming everything out.

But we\'re (mostly) musicians who used to go to Phish shows and on the weekends we jam for 12 hours straight creating weird Boomeranged soundscapes and funk-from-the-future, taking short breaks to stumble around in the woods and howl at the moon hoping somehow that will attract a suitable mate, ...

in case you were wondering, it never really does.

But we do love our Breakfast jams!! Some, more than others. Like me. Great Big Firey Ball is all I gotta say.
