^^^ I\'d have to disagree with you Kindm. all well except for Metallica were pioneers in there gene of music. noone played anything like there sound those few bands paved the way for everyone else to copy.
What theory would that be?
I was commenting on frankzappa\'s post about going mainstream and the bands he mentioned.
The beatles were a pop band before they went off on the musical exploration they are known for today.
Nirvana might have been pioneers of grunge but they had "mainstream" success very quickly.
Metallica had mainstream success with albums like the \'black\' album etc etc
it took them longer to break through probably because it was metal. Metal was huge in the late 80\'s and then focus changed to grunge then to hiphop where it has basically stayed with the exceptions of booty shaking half shirt wearing hotties
Grateful Dead were never successful in the mainstream. They were the highest grossing tour almost every year but \'mainstream\' america didn\'t have anytHing to do with that.
If you want to discuss wether they were pioneers of their genres it might hold more weight but the Grateful Dead were/are an extension of Americana, of old blue grass standards of delta blues and etc etc. There business model and ways of doing things were pioneering. The technical leaps that the industry took and technologies invented can be directly attributed to the Grateful Dead and their crew. So in that respect they were pioneers
Metallica specifically james Hetfield basically sings identical to Glenn Danzig. that \'ahhhra\' at the end of everything he sings is Glenn Danzig. I love Metallica. Probably in the top 5 bands I have seen live. They bring it for sure. (this was in 1992)
