Yeah, I was pretty impressed by his rig. His name is Sam and he\'s a pretty cool dude. Really stoked he made it out!

yes, most tapers are recording in higher dynamic bit rate and sample rates and uploading these higher quality files to archive.  the price of the a high def audio recording and playback systems has dropped considerably.  This is a good thing.  It just makes it more complicated and more time consuming to burn a CD because on would have to first resample and or dither the files to CD standard 16bit/44.1khz.  The reality is the CD is already becoming obsolete, just like cassettes and records.  ipods/mp3 players/thumb drives are here to stay.

I have not had the best of luck trying to resample stuff. I am all for higher resolution recordings but I love cds! I will continue to work at it because the music is just that sick.

Can 24-bit wavs be uploaded to ipods as is?

most if not all sound editing programs can resample to 44.1khz and dither to 16 bit.  read the FAQ for more detailed instructions. most of the time its a single click option for each. save the file and your good to go.
I don\'t own a ipod and can\'t answer that.

The CD-ROM hasn\'t gone the way of the dodo bird yet.  Too many of them installed in people\'s cars.

SoX is easy--and free.  There are Windows and Mac binaries--and source code, of course.  Very good documentation, too.

http://sox.sourceforge.net/

Code: [Select]
sox.exe -G -r 44100 -b 16 24-bit-input-file.wav 16-bit-output-file.wav

It does lot\'s of other cool stuff, too.

GLuft,

I am having trouble downloading the Sox program. Can you give me any advice? I guess I am not as savvy as I think! Seems like you need some real tech knowledge to get this program to work. I tried to download and open the sox program but nothing happened. Very weird.

On Windows,...

Download the sox-14.3.0-win32.zip file and then extract it somewhere.  You can even put it right under  "C:\\Program Files\\."  It will create a subfolder with all the files in it.

Then you just need to use the full path to the sox.exe file:

"c:\\Program Files\\sox-14.3.0\\sox.exe" --help

Oh, you need to run it from a command prompt--this is not a GUI app.  If you just double-click on it, it will just flash the help info and disappear.

Hope that helps.  If it\'s a Mac, I have no idea, but it\'s supposed to be Easy.
