Franco is clearly the worst pitcher in baseball history, but Randolph has won more than any other person in the Mets organization. And the list of candidates was slim. I might have gone Bob Brenley or Jim Leyland, but they seem to be unavailable across the board and it looks like no team will go with them. Look at it this way: the Phillies just hired Jerry Manuel to be their manager. Who\'s he? Exactly. I\'ll judge Randolph based on his on-field moves and strategy once the 05\' season starts.

But I understand your dislike considering the fact that Randolph was part of numerous Yankees championship teams, including one that celebrated their title at Shea in 2000.  And Randolph also batted .252 in his final season in the majors for the \'92 Mets, the worst team money could buy. Mike and Mad Dog, or as Imus used to call them, Fatso and Fruit Loops, are attempting a slaughter of Mets general manager Omar Minaya on the Fan right now.

those douchebags love to kill the Mets......

I just dont like it....

Big Stein loves to take former Met legends and make them Yankees.  That is his thing.  We just look like a wannabe yankee team... (the mets will be turning on their own TV station ala Yes in 2006.  I believe it will be called the SUCK network).....

Minaya said that Leyland wasn\'t interested in offseason scouting trips to the Caribbean and such, which Randolph is, and that Brenley called about the job, but wasn\'t interviewed. So I say definitely no Leyland and feel that Brenley deserved an interview considering he\'s won a title with Arizona and the fact that Minaya only interviewed three: Randolph, Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, and twice-fired former Astros and Angels manager Terry Collins. Still, overall, I support the move. Success breeds success. Now sign a marquee free-agent pitcher and hitter and steal the division.

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Despite his declining production and plummeting public image, Sammy Sosa still has fans in Flushing.

Mets GM Omar Minaya is exploring ways to bring the embattled Cubs slugger to New York, several major league sources said yesterday, and his arrival in New York would likely mean the departure of franchise face Mike Piazza and outfielder Cliff Floyd.

Sources said Minaya will not proceed unless he is confident that Sosa will be healthy.

But the groundwork may have moved ahead at the GM meetings last night when Mets assistant GM Jim Duquette met with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Sosa agent Adam Katz at a bar at the Ritz-Carlton.

The idea of bringing Sosa to Shea has received mixed reviews in the Mets\' front office. Sosa, who turns 36 tomorrow, appears to be nearing the end of his career and has had a prickly relationship with his managers, teammates and reporters.

Clearing room on the payroll will not be easy. Piazza, whose OPS (on-base plus slugging percentages) has fallen from .957 to .806 over the last four seasons, would probably end up with an AL club for which he could spend time as a designated hitter. Several major league sources denied rumors that the Dodgers are interested in trading Shawn Green for Piazza, who cannot be traded without his permission.

The trouble would be money. Any other team would owe Sosa $35 million over two seasons, and then face another option year in 2007 with a $3.5 million buyout. On the Mets\' side of the equation, Piazza is due $15.5 million next season, and Floyd is owed $13 million over the next two.

Sosa, whose physique shrunk noticeably last season, finished a third straight year in his own OPS decline, going from .993 to .849. He played only 126 games last season after hurting his back with a particularly potent sneeze.

Sosa exhausted his goodwill with the Cubs on the last day of the season, after a tense club lost eight of nine games and fell from playoff contention. He arrived shortly before the game began, failed to dress and left during the first inning.

After he told a reporter he left during the seventh inning, the team announced that security cameras recorded him leaving the parking lot in the first. More than the revelation of when Sosa departed, the announcement was notable because the club publicly embarrassed its marquee player.

I\'m sure most of you don\'t care (except for Breakfast youngster Drew and Jocelyn) that Bronson Arroyo was at the mall down the street from my house signing autographs last night.

Hm. Was the place mobbed? There is a little sports store down the road from my new apartment where they have the players in all of the time. Johnny Damon was there the other day, and it was insane... the whole street filled with people all clamoring to pay 70 bucks for a signed photograph, more if you bring in an item of your own to get signed. (No thanks!) They had to call in 4 police officers because the crowd was getting rowdy due to a general panic that they might not all get to meet him. (Keep in mind, 4 police officers involved in anything other than road paving is a big deal where I live.)

How about those Red Sox.  What a team.  Hey all non-Sox fans, don\'t you just wish you were a Sox fan?  What a team.

I would never trust David Wells in a big spot again after Game 5 of the 2003 World Series. Plus, a lefty in Fenway? I\'d rather have Lowe, let alone Martinez.
