put the buckets on sleds and drag them rather than carrying. :strong:
:chin: or perhaps zip lines and pulleys
So we got really slammed by this ice storm. Giant old trees down everywhere, no power obviously. I talked to a policeman yesterday who said we would be without power for 3 days minimum, probably more like a week. I guess all of the main power lines coming from Milford, NH, are completely destroyed, and the little ones aren\'t in much better shape.
I don\'t mind this at home really. It\'s kind of fun. I have a wood stove, so I can keep warm and cook food. But this really sucks at the barn. We have 25 horses who go through a LOT of water, and now that the power\'s out the well doesn\'t work. We have gone through all of the water on the farm now. So now we have to lug water by bucket from a brook that\'s through the woods and down a hill. I cannot tell you how much this sucks.
rent a gas generator, water pump and run some hoses up from the creek
i guess the state of nh is sold out of generators.

or maybe i dunno, a **** horse.
HaHa

Ever tried pulling a sled uphill through the woods when there is no snow on the ground? Also, how do you propose I keep them from spilling?
The horse pulling would be a nice idea if we had a horse that was trained to pull, a wagon, a harness, and a trail.
The zip line would be a real pain to attach big water buckets to. Seems like more effort to construct than it\'s worth. Easier to just carry them.
Thanks for the ideas though.
It\'s not all bad. It\'s pretty fun at my house. Sucks at the barn though... pretty stressful.

:?: wouldn\'t the buckets be empty when you were going uphill though?
Anyway, I would have gone to walmart and gotten a couple of those big tubs like todd carries merch around in and filled them up and put the cover on. Also I was going on the assumption that because you said there was an ice storm the ground would be covered with ice and that\'s what you\'d be able to drag it on.

No. The river is down a hill. So you go down the hill to get to the water, fill the buckets, then have to carry them uphill to the barn.
Believe it or not, there\'s not much ice on the ground. It\'s weird. Most of it melted, and it was windy, so it dried up a lot. There are patches here and there, but hardly any remains. A lot of the ice has melted off of the trees too, which is good, hopefully limbs will stop coming down soon.

The Archimedes\' screw, Archimedean screw, or screwpump is a machine historically used for transferring water from a low-lying body of water into irrigation ditches. It was one of several inventions and discoveries traditionally attributed to Archimedes in the 3rd century BC.
I know you\'re not going to do any of these as you\'d have power well before you\'d need it but Archimedes was still pretty damn brilliant.
My home town has out of power since thrusday, but my parents did get to meet Deval. He asked them what he could do for them and they said "Turn the power on." He said "We\'re working on it."

Well, after a full week, I finally got power yesterday, and running water this morning. Very exciting!
wow that must haev been a rough week
wow that must haev been a rough week
Nah, it wasn\'t bad at all. I read a lot and played a lot of Scrabble. If I hadn\'t had a woodstove it would have sucked, but I was plenty warm here. My barn clothes are pretty gross though... really looking forward to washing them.
