when I was a freshman in high school I read the linear notes to frank zappa\'s freakout. There\'s a line in there that says to drop out of school and go to the public library and read a damn book if you want to get a real education. That pretty much changed my education. I already questioned a lot of what I was being told, so I started researching stuff on my own. Find the source that the book is referencing and read it. Then find the source that was based on. All those famous things that people think they know but never actually read? Go read them. I\'m talking Hawkings A brief history of time, Darwins on the origin of species. Einstiens papers on theoretical physics. You have to read something for english class and you like it? Go find another book by that author. You\'re religious? read the bible. Every version of it you can find, ideally one with the book of esther. Then the apocrypha texts and the dead sea scrolls. Then the qur\'an, torah, tao te ching, ect. Find out who gilgamesh was, how to pronounce yhwh and learn why you never should speak the word nor should you touch the qur\'an.  Did I ever mention I\'m an atheist? I just find it fascinating the beliefs people will create and pass down from one generation to the other, again, never questioning the dogma of why they do something, just understanding that someone told them once this is how it is and they took it as truth.

All your math and science is theory. There\'s very few hard facts out there that have not been refined in one way or another. The greeks thought the earth was flat. Most people still follow the basic newton theory of gravity because it\'s easier to understand than the current definition. Before the invention of the microscope no one knew what germs were as a way of people getting sick. If you ask most people what the hadron collider is doing they wouldn\'t have a clue. Don\'t even get me started on the evolution of math equations. You can thank hitler trying to prove a connection between the aryan race and the greeks for the torch bearing ceremony in the olympics.George w. bush declared a news blackout in 02\' when north korea bombed alaska because at the time he was trying to get backing for a full invasion of iraq and didn\'t want the public forcing him into a 2 front war. Bill Clinton sold missile defense secrets to china and also set up major tarriff relief funds which allowed imports to flood into america, causing the upsurge of walmart which then put a stranglehold on main st. businesses and destroyed many downtown economies. They\'re building a superhighway from mexico to canada right through the center of the us which will be border stop free. As a result, no emissions testing and thousands of trucks from mexico will be able to come into the country that would never pass our standards. Anyway, enough of that. go read something, damnit.

While the post total is something to be proud of, MakisupaCJ is also headed towards some less noble records.  He has destroyed the record for "haha"s in first 13 days.  In fact, he actually leads all of .info for "haha"s in the entire calendar year for 2008.  In the Downloading Maadd(sp?) Songs thread he has not one but two separate streaks of 5 posts in a row with "haha".  (I\'m not making any of this up, go read it.)  His overall grade writing level of .56 (i.e. barely above Kindergarten) is atrocious even given .info\'s abysmal standards.  In fact, he has the second lowest grade level of all time after 13 days, second only to Rokkit. (Remember him?)

And how am I able to compute these advanced statistics?

ehem...maybe in your dream world.  Here is just my Thursday schedule:

5am - wake up, shower, feed the critters
7am - sit in traffic
8am-2pm - classes (which consist of writing down everything the professor says or else your screwed for the semester hence the feeling of carpal tunnel at the end of the semester, or hiking around in the woods for about 4-5 hours for labs...which obviously is awesome, but still exhausting)
2-4:30 drive home, rush to get more school stuff together, maybe eat dinner if time provides
4:30 - 5:15 sit in rush hour traffic while driving to the other campus
6-9 -enjoy a depressing class about poverty and how the governments of the world are so **** up
9-9:30 drive home; not as much traffic but it\'s still there for some ungodly reason
9:30 - 10 maybe eat
10-12 homework/study
12-5 sleep
Repeat this, granted for only 2 semesters, but it will probably end up being the rest of my life.  I\'ve already devoted 7 years to my undergrad studies...why not keep my record running!  

CJ, i used to have your attitude.  i hated high school with all the cliques, the teachers on your case about something, etc.  but i pulled through it by the skin of my teeth.  now i\'m in college going to school for something that i love and meeting so many phenomenal people.  you just have to find your place, but be patient.  As Emerson once said,

"Adopt the pace of Nature: her secret is patience"

Well, that was my college schedual. I always took great care at course selection time to chose classes with good times.

Example:
Computer Graphics - 8am or Database Theory - 2pm

yup, i took database theory, which is, the most god awful boring class in the world.

but the bottom line is either we help these people or the future for all of us is looking pretty grim

college is fun, but, no joke, if i had to do it all over again I would think a lot harder about putting myself in >$20,000 worth of debt unless i REALLY thought I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life....

great advice. but its hard to transfer credits from most community colleges... its crazy. but still, if you\'re unsure, its a great way to stay in school, and not kill yourself with debt.

i just finally finished a 7 year epic run of college, and have a debt about 4x that of Mr. peaches (although, if i had opted to go to a private, out-of-state university, it would be close to 10x)... but you know, i had such a blast at UConn, its worth every dollar thats debited from my checking account monthly for the next 15 years.

College isn\'t only about getting a job It is about being exposed to different subjects, people. It also teaches a lot of folks what it is like to be "on their own" for the first time in their lives. It also plunges you in to having to deal with total strangers, situations you most likely never encountered as a young person in HS etc. It is a growth experience as well


And I do have to stick up for the Sociology folks here. I have a minor in sociology. The knowledge has benefited me more than many of the other subjects I studied. It taught me great insight in to many different aspects of our world and how we interact with it and others.

But I have to admit I pretty much was exactly like AL described.

My goal is to become a college professor. And yes, I do care deeply about the material. My general approach to a lot of things in life is (and has always been) sociological, I just didn\'t realize this until last year when I switched majors. I want to teach and continuously research/write in order to figure out ways to attack the system, or break down social injustices that I think are BLARING in this society but not given enough attention because, well, that\'s the point, right? I\'m not interested in becoming rich, I\'m interested in empowering people who are never given the tools to empower themselves, specifically intellectually. I can\'t tell you how sick it makes me hearing some of my best friends constantly say "lazy ****" or "stupid spics" in situations where it\'s OBVIOUS they\'ve had a tenth of the opportunities we\'ve had. Even at work, I feel like the Mexicans are basically dehumanized by the boss and coworkers alike. I know most people don\'t give a **** about this or don\'t even want to believe there\'s any truth in sociology when their lives are smooth sailing comparatively. I know people want to continue to feel like they\'ve earned and are deserving of all of their perks in this "meritocracy" of America.... That **** just doesn\'t fly with me personally. So yeah, I\'m passionate about sociology and am fine with others not being so, but it definitely hits a nerve when someone straight up tags your route meaningless. I don\'t talk **** about anyone else\'s goals or ideas or think they\'re meaningless even if they might be for me.

ps I\'m not on the hype train around campus either, they annoy me too. I go to school for school, not to build a circus and act superior in my field.

I pre-warn anyone to reconsider what you are being taught at University and become a scrutineer concerning the agendas of public education!!!

I agree that we cannot judge someone\'s character by their race alone. It is a pure tragedy, and I fully respect anyone who is an activist, sociologist or philosopher or otherwise. However, if one is using a critical social lens, we might reveal the epitome of most social programs that have outright failed, at the cost to YOU; every single illegally taxed citizen, all in the name to "help" supposed underprivileged citizens. I am a fan of the free market and competition, which in effect will ultimately drive costs down and service provision up. To "equalize" or level the playing field, either by way of socialized medicine or welfare, would jeopardize the very existence of a free market society. Communism, in effect, attempts to economically level this societal playing field and as we\'ve seen in pre-USSR/China regimes, thwarts rights of privacy, independent business/competition, as well as a whole slew of anti- U.S. constitutional motifs.

I grew up in a very poor household, but I was never offered any help based on my White race. ( Of course not! ) I never expected any federal government compensation based on my family\'s economic status or my race. I relied on my family alone. We worked hard and see everyday people of all races who have worked hard to provide for their families and to educate themselves. Friends, it is up to us to help each other strengthen our families on a voluntary humanitarian basis.

It saddens me to ponder how we as legal law-abiding citizens are outright forced to pay our earned income via taxes that will pay for someone\'s "free" health care who decided to illegally cross our border. This person could be from any country; I am not targeting Mexicans, however thousands cross our border illegally with the expectation of deserving free housing and health care. Don\'t misinterpret me, I am all for legal immigrants! The true legal process represents the basis of the U.S. I do blame the employers who can look themselves in the mirror and deny an American a decent wage all in the name of saving a buck on cheap dehumanized illegal labor. The corporate giants are to blame! Why do we not consider optional charity as the resolve to any social program?

Basically, this results to the fact that I am a true Ron Paul Republican who is fearful of the lurches of big government. As far as people having racist slang about whole groups, they may as well save their comments and look at their own actions instead. Phew. Kudos to anyone who read this.

I seriously think you misinterpreted my position. It\'s too bad that you can say I have given a crock of **** based on a few opinions you and I have. I would defend that I support those who work hard and not take advantage of others to get their status; i.e. corporations who pay workers low wages to succeed. I outright said that we should blame them, but that is why people have the free choice of what services and goods they will buy. I am absolutely totally against unethical corporations who do not abide by the legal framework they should be held accountable for. If the free market worked appropriately, the red tape of bureaucracy wouldn\'t have muddled up the entire Federal Reserve system that supposedly "nationalizes" these self-serving corporations.
