Hey, I need to pick up a good microphone for taping shows. Any suggestions? I don\'t want to spend too much. Maybe around 300-500 bucks.
Don\'t know what Peck and Fitz use specifically but if you go to archive.org they post what kind of mic they used

you do have a fair amount of choices in that price range. What do you plan to use as a recorder ?
I cannot stress enough going out and patching if you have never taped a live concert before. Especially before you invest any real money. It isn\'t for everyone, can be a huge pain in the ass and a lot of people find after trying it etc that they don\'t like the change to their "normal" concert experience.
having to babysit your gear, protect it from huge crowds, drunks, etc etc can be very taxing even for those of us who do/did it all the time.
If you think your ready to pull the trigger on some mics I would suggest heading over to
taperssection.com and signing up. They have a "Yard Sale" section where folks like myself, peck etc resell used EQ. You can get crazy good deals there and folks are very helpful with questions etc.
Beyer MC930\'s have been getting a lot of looks might be a little out of your range but there really are tons of choices.
in that price range i would recommend rode nt3s. i use them most of the time for taping the breakfast and i like them a lot. they cost $270 each at guitar center right now. you wouldnt be able to get a matched pair, but they will probably be able to give you 2 with serial #s right next to each other.
you would probably need some other stuff like a t bar or a clamp so u can position the mics in different ways, so with more stuff to buy after the mics they might be out of your price range but you do get a lot for your money. they make good instrument and vocal mics in the studio too. and they can be powered by a 9 volt battery if you do not have phantom power on whatever you are plugging them into.
tapers are strange folk. you sure you\'re ready to join that club?
I kind of have to at this moment if I want to record my band. We just started out so we don\'t have fans who want to record our shows......yet. I\'ve been doing soundboard recordings but usually the mix is way off. Thanks for the advice people I really appreciate it.

I\'m using my laptop with Sonar to record. I have a Tascam interface which seems to work pretty good.

post the model number of the tascam so we can have a look at the specs and see what would work for you.
I would def. suggest heading over to taperssection.com and sign up. Guys over there are always looking for pro-taping bands to get out and record etc. So if you ask if folks are available a lot of times guys will come out. Peck does this from time to time when he needs bfast shows covered. usually a guestlist spot is all it takes.
got a link to some of your tunes ?

Its a Tascam US-144 (2in 2out) , I\'ll definitely check out taperssection.com. The link to my bands myspace page is my signature.
the rode is not a bad mic. other mics in your price range would be studio project C4, or Oktava MK-012. Either of these are available in a stereo pair with a few accessories for around 3-6 hundred new or used. You could also go with any assortment of lapel style mics (these will be useful if you plan to ever stealth tape...) These would be Sound Professionals, Audio Technica, Church Audio etc.
Taperssection is your friend...
