I completely understand where you\'re coming from tuna. It has been been my mission, since March, to not be over critical and enjoy what the band has to offer, as long as they are not **** things up. There is a serious effort going into their music right now, and that is the foundation of greatness. They are old men now, and probably don\'t have the fire in their bellies the way they did in 94 when things really took off. But their approach to creativity and musicality is better than its been in over ten years, and the five shows i went to were all fantastic(minus bill kreutzman.) Even though they aren\'t the progressive monsters they once were, they are writing great songs ala the Beatles and the Who, and honestly to me it doesn\'t get much better. I love the craziness, but when it comes to Phish, there\'s so much more. Listen to bands like Yes and King Krimson that write similarly progressive songs and it doesn\'t hold a candle, you know why? Cause Phish has songs like If I Could, Character Zero, Theme, all that stuff that is simple, but is also so sick. Those are three completely different examples but all equally awesome. Diversity in greatness. THAT IS PHISH

hey tuna pants...i could care less how many people you bring to a show...or what you think of and my stone cold face....what bothers me was the use of the term pop music....seriously boy bands and britney spears...phish...pop music not to much...like or dislike...we can all have our opinions..fine...but pop music...uggg...give me something better then that..

those early/mid 90\'s shows are my heart and soul...i was at them...were you even born? also middle school...ha...i am a highly educated ****...watch it...the end xoxo

Blondie I got no hard feelings but you sure try to be a pain in my ass on the internets. Gives me something to do though so in a way I appreciate it.

I use the term pop music because I\'ve been hearing "Backwards Down the Number Line" on the radio a bit lately. And they play "Gotta Jibboo" too and occasionally "The Connection". I never called Phish a pop band or a freakin boy band... lol... seriously.... but "Joy" is by far their most pop/radio/mainstream friendly album yet.

Not saying that\'s inherently a bad thing I just happen to prefer the classics. Early 90\'s Phish is your heart and soul & you were there. Right on. It\'s my heart and soul too if you saw my Phish collection you\'d be like holy ****. I play guitar because of Trey. I also happen to be a pretty insane guitar player -- not that its something I try to bring up on a Breakfast board full of Phish fans -- but anyway I play mad Phish and there is some **** that I simply can\'t play and I really doubt anyone can... and I\'m not talking about tone or emulating another guitar players emotions... I mean like some of that **** from 91-95 when Trey was totally on fire and the guitar sounds like bombs getting dropped out of an airplane or some ****. There\'s no note on my fretboards or anyone else\'s I\'ve seen that does that. That aint no effects pedal either. That\'s the rawest most **** improvisational guitar I\'ve ever heard.

So talk **** all you want and I\'ll talk **** back if that\'s how you wanna **** with the internets, but regardless.

DWD= top ten in many peoples catalog, also happens to be the bands first true foray into mainstream nannies with music video and tons of radio play. Does it devalue its serness???

The fact that the album version cuts off the song right before it starts to kick ass devalues its serness. And that was probably the worst music video ever so that devalued its serness.

I know when I wanna listen to a sick Disease I play the album version.... haha right

So after a few listenings to Joy, my opinions:

BDTNL- pretty good. Better enjoying it on disk than previously seeing it live. (the jam after it at spac not included) the chorus is catchy and i caught myself singin it at work. go ahead and put me in the guilty pleasure thread...

STFTFP- average. not bad but i think this songs full potential is unrealized thus far both on disk and live.

Joy- I dig this tune a little bit and i thought it came out well on the album. something about it makes me feel.... happy

sugar shack- heard this song at camden and thought it was underwhelming. I love it on the album and now can\'t wait to hear it again live, i think it would be a sweet opener for any set. its unique, a little quirky, and a little groovy. woulda fit perfect on rift or nectar, imho

Ocelot- solid tune both live and on the album, but nothing mindblowing... i\'d call it a 2nd cousin to wolfmans brother or 46 days. was that a flub i heard? i\'ve been hearin the debates for at least a week now lol... it sounds a little funny but this band is always funny. doesnt bother me either way

Kill devil falls- i say meh. i enjoyed it enough at the alpine show as a part of the set, but mostly this song doesnt do much for me- live or studio

Light- i wish the opening part was longer, that section is so cool but it seems like some random thing thats not even part of the song? the rest of the tune is cool, but i think this is another song that is gonna be great live but doesnt hit its mark on the album

I been around- it makes me smile

time turns elastic- Its nice to see trey write a big piece to wrap your head around again, and i think they did a great job recording it.... unfortunately it hasnt really blown my hair back yet. eschers etchings I-V is way better than this, and i havent even heard V yet...

20 yrs later- I really really like this song a lot. it sounds different than most other phish songs.... sorta reminds me of led zepplin or something. I think the album version does it justice, and i loved it at spac... and it\'ll only get better with time

Joy (album)- Letter Grade- B. solid comeback album. not an instant classic, but I like a lot of the songs. I think BDTNL, Joy, Sugar Shack, and 20 years later sound better than i expected on the album after hearing the songs in concert first... Cant wait to hear Party Time... Go Phish

Ellis - I\'ll leave Party Time alone and hope that it\'s only broken out once a tour. But I\'ll do a little swapping on Joy:

1. Scrap sugar shack for Let Me Lie
2. Scrap TTE for Alaska

I\'m sure I\'ll get **** for it, but I really enjoy the new album, but it comes to a screaching halt at TTE and I can\'t even enjoy 20 Years Later...

It\'s funny watching all this as a passive observer. My only comment would be that this is probably the most "radio friendly" album they\'ve put out as a whole minus TTE obviously. But speaking of the more progressive based songs... do you think we\'ll ever hear them whip out a Goodbye Head? Trey played that numerous times with the TAB groups and definetly a bunch of times with GRAB... I wouldn\'t mind hearing them take a stab at it. I\'m not saying its the greatest song or anything, but it is one of the better, longer pieces Trey has written in recent years. I figured that might be one Trey song that makes a Phish album, especially before Let Me Lie. Even if it only is a bonus disc of outakes!

I found the entire album "meh" at best.

However, lets stop kidding ourselves, no one listens to phish for their studio albums.

Ocelot, Joy, BDTNL, are good news ones live...
