For me, Sketches of Spain is an equally haunting and elegant album. On the Corner is the type of funk that accumulates under your fingernails over the course of several months. Like peanut butter.

I agree with jocelyn and chris - Sketches is fantastic. Even as a gutarist, you have to appreciate what Miles does on Rodrigo\'s.

Can you provide a description for both Garaj Mahal and Animal Rescue?

How do the Miles fusion albums compare with Herbie Hancock\'s stuff? I love Herbie but don\'t have the Miles familiarity. I know they collaborated frequently though.

I am spending the day in San Francisco tomorrow so I may hit up Amoeba\'s music. They have everything there. What is the funkiest Miles album? I will pick it up tomorrow.

Anybody familiar with Freddy Hubbard\'s "Jars of Clay"? Someone mentioned that it was a good album for those into Herbie.

Garaj Mahal has funk and rock sounds blended together in a jazzy format. They are: Kai Eckhardt, Alan Hertz, Eric Levy, Fareed Haque. Haque adds some Middle Eastern sounding stuff to the band (plays guitar and electric sitar). I\'ve heard them described a lot of times as "dirty."

Aquarium Rescue Unit (formerly Col. Bruce Hamton and A.R.U.) is quite eclectic. Funky, sometimes poppy, sometimes a tinge of southern rock, jazz, Latin.... It\'s hard to keep track of who\'s in the band; changes a lot.... right now they are Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, Paul Henson, Jimmy Herring, and Sean O\'Rourke.... I think. That\'s according to their website. Fun music. Good for shaking one\'s booty.

same here. But if you like that album AND you like mid seveties zappa, then you NEED some MAHVISHNU ORCHESTRA (alot of the same musicians)

very weird because I was just sampling Mahavishnu Orchestra on Amazon.com. I have a list of stuff I want to buy from used music shops when I head into S.F. in an hour.

Mahavishnu - Inner Mounting Flame

Chick Corea/Return to Forever - Romantic warrior, Hymn of the 7th Glory, No Mystery

Anyone advise against any of these albums?

Well since we\'re on the topic of old school hip-hop, I\'ll obviously vouch for the two Tribe albums and throw the classic De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising," into the mix along with any Public Enemy album, Beastie Boys album (including the new one which unfortuntely seems to be going past too many people\'s radar), Digital Underground\'s "Sex Packets," of course any J5 (who are overdue for a new one), and Jay-Z for a mix of the old and new. Another underrated album is Tribe\'s first: People\'s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Dialated Peoples are another emerging hip-hop act who I like. And if you really want to get stupid (and use a word that don\'t mean nuthin, like luptid), check out Dr. Octogon\'s science-friction opus "Dr. Octogonecologyst." You may know Dr. Octogan by his more familar name, Kool Keith. Oh yeah, I can\'t forget Wu-Tang\'s "36 Chambers" and GangStarr\'s "Hard to Earn."

MO are great - the Wild Strings boot is amazing and the early albums too are well worth getting.

Another great album is Outkast\'s "Aquemeni" from 1998, which might get lost amongst all the hubbub surrounding their most-recent release. I feel it\'s too unique to classify strictly as old school, but it has the feel.

What is the story with Jon Mclaughlin? Famous guitarist now? I noticed he had lots of solo albums.

I located Sketches of Spain listed at less the $5 at Amoeba\'s in S.F.

Yeah I liked their first album quite a bit (haven\'t heard the second), but they sure are cocky. Every other damn line seems like it\'s them talking themselves up. Pretty common in hip-hop though I suppose.
