I\'m interested to hear what some folks have to say...
As far as I knew an "Indie" band was a band that\'s on an independent record label. Seems these days, the word "Indie" is being used as a genre for bands in the same way you\'d say Metallica is a "metal" band. i.e. myspace.com lists Weezer as "Rock/Indie" and as far as I know Weezer is a mainstream band signed to a major record label (I\'m gonna guess DGC if my memory serves me right). I didn\'t think "Indie" had anything to do with the actual music.
I had this discussion with someone last night, and we came to the possible conculsion that "Indie" means sloppy and/or the kind of band that isn\'t making music to necessairly showcase their ability to play their instrument (i.e. opposite a band like The Breakfast). I just find this kind of confusing and misleading.
Any thoughts?
I have always thought that Indie ment that the band was on an independant label.....I dont see how it could mean anything else......
Whoever told you that inde means that the music is sloppy must have been misunderstood or has no idea what they are talking about......
I would say that you could classify a "sloppy" band by the word "sucky"
I was always under the impression that "Indie" meant Independant. As in having there own label or having nothing to do with the commericialization of music. Just like an Independant Record Store. I don\'t know how the crossover to sloppyh would occur but I wouldn\'t put it past the corporate record companies to try and crossover and take something and destroy it for there own good.
i was having a discussion with some one about this to. indie to me is a band without a major record label contract who like to play there music and get paid mad cash for doing it but are still under the pop radios mainstream playing list. i think some kids that are into indie would say it\'s a rock band that hasn\'t soldout
so what do we got here?
1. "Indie" bands ARE NOT on major record labels, therefore the "Indie" classification has NOTHING to do with how the music sounds, correct?
2. My above reference to Weezer being wrongfully classified as an "Indie" band holds water cuz they\'re on Geffen.
OK, so what does a phrase such as "they\'re going for more of an Indie sound" supposed to mean?
Sloppy, distorted, power chords, whiney generic Thom Yorkesque vocals, pretentions to the millionth degree, musicians who think they\'re the
**** when in reality they lifted more music than Jimmy Page and Elvis!!!
In the end it\'s just a stupid label pushed by the music industry (ie jambands, progressive rock, fusiion) in order to market a certain subculture to the mainstream.
By the way, I did get my quote from somewhere...
manager for a band with a name that rhymes with Stencilmass said "they\'re going for more of an indie sound" to one of my associates.
As far as I knew, that aforementioned band was already "Indie"= no label.
