I\'m trying to help someone mostly with hardware purchasing. She is a musician who will need a decent mobile studio for recording/mixing. I think she wants to stick with ProTools for software right now. Any opinions from those with experience would be greatly appreciated.
what kind of budget ?
There have been some really cool things coming out without crazy price points. Can never go wrong with MOTU depending on needs a UA-5 in its various flavors is always a great bang for the buck. I really like my VX Pocket 440 and they can be had of e-bay cheap. I paid only about $100.00 for mine 4channels XLR, COAX etc etc
Edirol has a standalone 4 channel HDD ecorder do out in feb. the R4 depending on how soon you need to make a purchase. lots of stuff on the horizon (as always i gues

)
Grace Design stuff is always top notch if she has the money.
doesnt pro tools software require protools hardware to run? i just bought a digi 001 and am very pleased with it.
hey Matt,
Need a little more info to get your friend in the right direction;
how may simultaneous recording channels will she need? 2? 8? 16?24?
since you mentioned protools:
Protools software only works with protools harware.
digi001 (8channels +Adat+Spdif) does not work with laptops.
Mbox works with laptops, 2 channel
digi002 works with laptop (firewire), (8channels +Adat+Spdif)
Hope that gives you a good start,
Matt
Thanks for the replies. I\'ve been doing some research. I know that most Pro Tools users are Mac OS based, but it seems that there has been some excellent work being done with people building vastly superior machines using AMD chips on particular motherboard types that spank even a state of the art G5 for about 2/3 the price using digi 001, Mbox or digi 002.
Jim Cobb, what hardware are you runnning the digi 001 with?
