Now, even though I am an alumnus, this course erks me. A few years ago there were stories about people doing this with Bob Dylan and his electric folk companions, Jim Morison, etc. There have always been courses on the San Fransisco Sceene of the 60s, but I would think that the professor would have chosen a band with a little more cultural influences in their music.

And a band with less of an "image" than the grateful dead, an image that really doesn\'t have anything to do with the original movement, as far as I can tell.

I am probably wrong.

More cultural influence in their music than the Grateful Dead Like who.

The influences on the band are wide and varied. From the early Americana and Bluegrass to Jazz etc etc. Depending on the member of the band you care to focus on. They re-worked many american classics with the help of Hunter and others.

What other band do you think would be better suited for this topic. ?

Not to mention they were at the beginning of the Hippie movement and were a primary driving force for decades to come in what was to become the counter culture. The beginnings of which were framed by Kerouac Ginsberg, Kesey, Cassidy and many many others. The Merry Tricksters etc etc all of theses people were the Grateful Dead family. the two are intertwined
