• As a sox fan, i have a heart of stone towards all news regarding yankees, but this deserves my respect.

• I knew something wasn\'t right when he stopped attending the Old Timer\'s Games, but they never really made anything public about his illness.  I\'m going to the game tonight, so I\'ll let you know if they do any kind of tribute to Scooter.

  Before you come back that I\'m thinking of the other guy, I\'m pretty sure when I was a kid he did them also... :shrug:

  His death was confirmed by the Yankees. Rizzuto had been in declining health for several years and was living at a nursing home in West Orange, N.J.
  
  Rizzuto, known as "The Scooter,\'\' played for the Yankees throughout the 1940s and \'50s and won seven World Series titles.
  
  Phil Rizzuto was a flashy, diminutive player who could always be counted on for a perfect bunt, a nice slide or a diving catch in a lineup better known for its cornerstone sluggers. He played for 13 seasons alongside the likes of Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.
  
  He stood just 5-foot-6 but was equipped with a productive bat, sure hands and quick feet that earned him his nickname. A leadoff man, Rizzuto was a superb bunter, used to good advantage by the Yankee teams that won 11 pennants and nine World Series between 1941 and 1956.
  
  Rizzuto tried out with the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants when he was 16, but because of his size was dismissed by Dodgers manager Casey Stengel, who told him to "Go get a shoeshine box.\'\' He went on to become one of Stengel\'s most dependable players.
  
  A Rizzuto bunt, a steal and a DiMaggio hit made up the scoring trademark of the Yankees\' golden era, and he played errorless ball in 21 consecutive World Series games. DiMaggio said the shortstop "held the team together.\'\'
  
  Rizzuto came to the Yankees in 1941 and batted .307 as a rookie, and his career was interrupted by a stint in the Navy during World War II. He returned in 1946 and four years later became the American League MVP. He batted .324 that season with a slugging percentage of .439 and 200 hits, second most in the league. He also went 58 games without an error, making 288 straight plays.
  
  He led all AL shortstops in double plays three times and had a career batting average of .273 with at least a .930 fielding percentage.

• Very sad, I can\'t even imagine the hundreds of games I listened to him back in the WPIX days. He made it fun.

  Absolutely not.  As I opened this thread I turned to my cube neighbor and started talking about those old Money Store commercials.  What an odd business to do commercials for... I bet he owed someone a "favor".

  Mark, I second that.  With Phil and Mel Allen gone, that just leaves Jerry Coleman as the lone survivor of the crew, who is in San Diego broadcasting Padre games.

• awww,sad news.Born and raised w/ the Yankees.(they are in my blood)89 years old though..He had a great life and fullfilling.Def. left a legacy.for SER.

• Mixed game last night.  First off, the Yankees played like dog **** the whole night.  We ended up leaving during the pitching change in the top of the 6th when it was 8-0.
  
  As for the tribute, here are my comments.  We got there early so that we could try and hit Monument Park, but I guess that even at 5:15, it\'s too late.  Basically they painted the #10 on both sides of home plate and put a standing bouquet of flowers out by Scooter\'s plaque in Monument Park.  Before the national anthem, Bob asked for a moment of silence for Scooter (I guess that\'s the new queue to start cheering.  I found this a bit insulting, people could have started cheering after the silent moment.  Then they played the national anthem (again, people can\'t wait till the song is over to start cheering - show some respect).  There was a tribute video played after the top of the first and that was pretty much it for the tribute.  After that, it was all downhill for the Yanks.

  Can we get a grammar check on this one? I\'m pretty sure I\'m correct in my tense usage. Try saying it without the pluar on \'remeber\' and it sounds wrong:
  "Am I the only one who remeber him from the money store commercials?"
  
  Try it with other words:
  It sound wrong?
  Or,
  It SoundS wrong.
  
  Also, I have multiple memories of seeing the commercial. I didn\'t only see it one time.
