I guess I picked a good time to quit smoking! :awwyeah:
I\'ll beleive it when I see it.

 fwiw, I really do plan on quitting w/ TKA in June... I\'m gonna be a wimp & use a pill called Chantix - already spoke to the doctor & it\'s all set up.  Seems easy enough, especially since we\'re buying 1-2 cartons a week right now   The way I look at it, that\'s $45-90 extra per week! :beerban:

In addition to the internet tax, the Democrat\'s plan also would hike the cigarette tax another 49-cents a pack.

This has been advertised in gas stations and convenience stores for the past 6 months or so on a little 2"x2" piece of paper. Can\'t tell ya what it says exactly, but it\'s definitely from Philip Morris telling people to vent out about the tax. Spacey, and extra .50 per pack for someone like me is another $4.50 ish per week, $18 per month, $216 per year. I can\'t afford that.

At least it\'s still cheaper than RI prices.  i pay $7/pack...course those are the "high-end" smokes.  otherwise it\'s somewhere between $5-6/pack.  i\'ll leave it up to you to do the math.

Into crappy cigars. CT tobacco is one of the top cigar wraps, but from what I understand does not make a good cigar.

Shade tobacco

It is not well known that the northern US states of Connecticut and Massachusetts are also one of the important tobacco-growing regions of the country. Long before Europeans arrived in the area, Native Americans harvested wild tobacco plants that grew along the banks of the Connecticut River. Today, the Connecticut River valley north of Hartford, Connecticut is known as Tobacco Valley, and the fields and drying sheds are visible to travelers on the road to and from Bradley Field, the major Connecticut airport. The tobacco grown here is known as shade tobacco, and is used as outer wrappers for some of the world\'s finest cigars.

Almost all of the tobacco grown in CT is used for cigar wraps.

now that is a very Johnny Upstate answer........A claim that "almost" all of the tobacco grown in CT is used for cigar wraps.  I dont doubt the claim Mr. Anderson, but if you say "almost" then you are implying that not all of it is used for cigar wraps......  So then where does the rest of the tobacco go??????

I guess I picked a good time to quit smoking! :awwyeah:

whats an extra half a buck on a pack of smokes anyway?  It would be nice to see them reduce the state tax on cigarettes.....I mean dont we grow a lot of tobacco in this state? Or is that purely cigar tobacco?

Don\'t worry. They have that tax in NY and it is an honor system.

I Still pay no tax on internet purchases when the company you are buying from DOES NOT have a viable presence in your state.

You are supposed to declare the purchases at tax time but who the hell would do that. And this is only for sites that do not collect it. Huge companies like Sony and others like them have a presence everywhere and they collect sales tax when you make a purchase it is up to them to do it.

Democrats propose internet tax bill

(Hartford-WTNH) _ The Democrat\'s new plan calls for extending the 6% sales tax to all purchases on the internet. In order to do that, lawmakers will have to eliminate the exemption for clothing that costs less than $50.

Currently, when you buy an article of clothing that costs less than $50 in the state of Connecticut, it is tax free. It is a long-standing exemption aimed at helping people pay for the necessities.

"The clothing exemption would be eliminated and Mr. and Mrs. Connecticut will end up paying an additional $135-million in taxes on their clothing. It\'s a bad idea,"
said Senator William Nickerson.

Today the Finance Committee gives final approval to the Democrats tax plan that eliminates that exemption. They are doing it so they can tax your purchases on the internet. In order to join other states in collecting sales tax on internet purchases, the tax has to be on every dollar. Otherwise the state can not participate and will miss out on an estimated $500-million a year in sales tax revenue.

Governor Rell says it is not worth it to lose the $50-exemption.

"You\'re talking about a tax on the middle class," said Rell.

The Democrats on this committee feel their tax cuts will more than offset the loss of the $50-clothing exemption.

"We really have to do that to be part of the compact, and we think if we provide relief through another tax mechanism then the burden of paying tax on that first $50 of clothing won\'t be felt," said State Representative Cameron Staples.

In addition to the internet tax, the Democrat\'s plan also would hike the cigarette tax another 49-cents a pack.
