road to work today. 18 miles each way. the yoga class on my lunch break was a little harsh, probably should have gotten something rather than just the 2 apples I ate all day but man can that bike fly!

now just being a dork, but I average 36mpg in my car and have a 32 mile commute round trip to work, which means it\'s just under 2 gallons a day I\'m NOT using by biking in, or currently, <$6 a day back in my pocket not to mention zero green house emissions.

now multiply that by 5 days a week for the next 3 or 4 months...

I hear ya on the cost savings and exercise benefits.  I biked to work this morning and noticed a deflated tire with a nail in it the second I arrived.  Instead of getting pissed, I realized that the $5 for a new tube is a small price to pay for what is normally a free ride.

hey Dave, when is the last day to be able to donate. i have no loot now but will gladly donate in the next week or two....

for this ride, we actually have until october to reach our fundraising goals.

NOTE: the previous statement does not suggest that anyone on the fence about sponsoring us should actually wait until october to do so. thank you. ;)

yea, you don\'t get into biking for the fashion. I love the fact that dave got the team sobe jersey though.

long way between 61 miles in 4.5 hours (real time, counting stopping to cross streets, etc) and 270 in 3 days.

paul and i went out for a 61-mile ride yesterday. finished in just under 4 hours. 102 miles for the weekend for me..

...and i\'m hurtin\'!!

Glad to see you two are working hard for the upcoming ride.  I know a girl who raised lots of money for the SF Breast cancer marathon, only to back out of the race after not training at all.

Are you two on road bikes with full spandex outfits?

Paul,
I\'m going to be up in the area over the summer for a couple things related to my sister\'s wedding.  If you\'re interested in getting together for pint, send me your phone number and I\'ll give you a ring a couple days before.

I\'d like to take this time to commend Dave and Paul and everyone else who are joining together to fight ALS, a horrific disease whose effects I\'ve witnessed firsthand.

In my job as a sports writer for the North Haven Courier, I wrote a story on a man named Paul Carr, who used to coach American Legion baseball in Hamden, a suburb of New Haven. Paul was was diagnosed with ALS about a year-and-half ago and as you all probably know it is not something from which you recover. A good friend of Paul\'s, Charlie Flanagan, who coaches North Haven\'s American Legion baseball team, joined forces with Paul\'s wife, Kate, to help raise money in order to fight ALS. As of December, which was the time that I learned of their efforts, nearly $70,000 had been raised that went to the Connecticut chapter of the ALS Association and the Yale University School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology. Their goal is to raise $500,000.

Additionally, Coach Flanagan asked if I would write an article on Paul Carr that detailed the fund-raising efforts and talked about aspects of his coaching career, his relationship with Flanagan, and just the overall kind and funny person that Paul is. I twice interviewed Paul, Kate, and Coach Flanagan at the Carr house, and though it was difficult to see someone is such a weakened condition, the strength that all three of them--especially Paul--displayed in discussing ALS and their efforts to fight and ultimately defeat it, is something that will remain inside my heart and mind for the rest of my life. It really puts things into perspective to see people be so strong in the face of such a tragic situation. It was my honor to write the story and was an equal honor to have Paul, Kate, and Coach Flanagan commend me on my effort. I truly felt like I had done something good by writing an article that helped raise awareness about something so bad.

My experience with this situation made me want to donate to the cause of Paul, Kate, and Coach Flanagan\'s fight of ALS, which I did. And when I found out about Dave and Paul Ryan\'s efforts, I certainly wanted to do the same.

I encourage everyone who reads this do make a donation, regardless of the amount. It is true what they say: every bit makes a difference.

Thank you for reading this.

Dave, I\'ve concocted a plan for donating to the two of you, but it requires a little work on your part to keep track of. On Tuesday\'s I am going to start paying $12/game, the extra $2/game to go to the ride. Should be enough weeks before the thing to make it like $25-30 for each of ya.

To help stimulate this a little, I\'m pulling a trick from NPR during fundraising...

I WILL MATCH EVERY DONATION MADE TO DAVE FROM A MEMBER OF THE BOARD FOR THE NEXT WEEK.

So, if you only had $20 and gave $10 to me and $10 to Dave, I\'m going to put the $10 you gave me back into Daves fund. This is active from TUESDAY 4/10 @7:30pm EST - TUESDAY 4/17 @ 7:30pm EST at which time I will calculate and make a donation to his account.

I didn\'t talk this over with him. I just thought of it. Just trying to get more people active by this, and if you remeber I was looking for charities earlier. This donation is part of all that.

Make me poor people!

Sidenote: went for a ride Saturday and I was completely exhausted after 16 miles.  Good luck.

heh... i\'m DYING to get out and ride, but this weather is killing me (plus i still need cleats/shoes/bottle cages/gloves/other ****). i bought a new bike last weekend, and i\'m still waiting for my first real ride.

i got home a little early from work today (6:00) and told lisa it wasn\'t that cold out and i was gonna go for a little spin.. just wanted to get on the bike for a little bit..

yeah.

got about 4 miles in. WAY too cold/windy for both my lungs (i can\'t do *anything* outside when it\'s cold) and my naked hands.. fuckin\' a.. where\'s spring??

You guys are sick. Nevermind that it\'s approx. 90 miles per day on a bicycle (hell, I think I can do a half mile before getting winded), but it\'s friggin JULY in NEW ENGLAND! Do you have any clue how humid it\'s gonna be? Think this, multiplied by 10,000!:

yeah, good thing paul has some brains and put down an extra $20 to get us into an air conditioned room at uconn the first night.. i guess i originally skipped over that part on the registration..

The humidity is not that bad. I prefer riding in the middle of summer because you don\'t have to make pee stops, you just sweat it all out. Carry a camel pack FULL of ice. Drink it throughout the day and on top of staying cold, as it melts, the bag must expand to make room for the large volume of water, but you are drinking it the whole time. End result, the 1.5 liter bag of ice water stays full for a good 5 hours. Also, you are going anywhere from 18-30 mph so you create your own wind to cool yourself off. If it gets really hot, spray water from your bottle directly in front of your bike at head level and before gravity can let it fall, you ride straight through it, like a kid jumping through a sprinkler. If you get winded, slow your heart rate by breathing slowly through your nose only. This will also prevent cramping in your side and can reduce your bmp by 10-20. Conserve energy by sitting far forward when climbing a hill as opposed to standing on the pedals. There\'s a ton more tricks like that, not that any of you actually care.

Thanks for any donations you can handle Anthony!

Hey folks,

On July 20th, 21st, and 22nd, FrankZappa (Paul Ryan) and I will be taking part in the Tri State Trek (http://www.tristatetrek.com/index.php) - a 3-day, 270-mile bike ride from Boston to New York, to benefit ALS (Lou Gehrig\'s Disease). The ride is going to be a huge challenge for both of us, and we\'ll be spending the next few months training up to it.

As participants in the ride, we are required to raise a minimum of $1650 each, in addition to our registration fee. We\'re looking for sponsors.

If you would like to sponsor us in the ride, it would be greatly appreciated. All we ask is that if you do decide to help out, that you split that amount up evenly between the two of us. You can sponsor us here:

Dave\'s Page (http://www.active.com/donate/Trek2007/davepeck) - Paul\'s Page (http://www.active.com/donate/Trek2007/paulryan)

Fundraising for this ride is as much of a challenge as the ride itself, so please help out if you can!

We\'ll keep you posted on our fundraising goals, our training goals, and of course, the actual ride itself once we get there. You can also click here (http://www.tristatetrek.com/index.php) to find out more information about the ride.

THANK YOU!
