why are you deciding to move, mel?
-
house only. no apt\'s.

Check out those apartments up the road/down the hill from Peck\'s. Fine neighbors, nice accomodations!
:D

if anyone does happen to hear of, or know someone with, a house for rent in the near future (may or june) in foxon for under $2000, pref 4BR cape or similar with at least a little yard please let me know.

Heeeeey, what about a girl? You listed two all boy schools.
One all boys school. I purposely left out the "of ____" in ND, since ND Fairfield is coed.
lets say for the record that im just discussing schools ... but my kids are both girls so those prep schools are not an option.
try laurelton hall or sacred heart when they get old enough if you wanna go private. definitely stay out of all new haven high schools. branford is supposed to pretty good these days, and the new north haven high school is just enormous
or fantastic atheletes
lord only knows what the hell happened to my brother then.

Hi Melanie!
I went to East Haven public schools my entire life:
Deer Run (in Foxon): I LOVED going to school there. I still see some of the teachers every once in a while and they remember me and my entire family.
East Haven Middle School (now Joseph Melillo Middle School)
East Haven High School
I have no idea how they rate with test scores but I think that East Haven is what you make of it. My sister and I were both very good students and both graduated at the top of our class with honors. I do have to admit that I slacked off alot and didn\'t try very hard. I wonder if I would have been as successful of a student if I attended a different school? My sister and I both felt pretty well prepared for college, where we both graduated with high honors. Plenty of staveners go on to graduate from ivy league schools as well..
I\'m a nurse and work with a couple of RN\'s that went to private high schools and expensive colleges. We both make the same amount of money and have the same college degrees. The only difference is they have a ton of loans to pay back and I don\'t.
Although the East Haven school system worked for me I do think the high school allows a lot students to fall through the cracks. If your children are not exceptionally motivated students or fantastic atheletes you have to be really involved with their schooling to ensure they are getting the most out of it and are not left behind or forgotten about. I can go into plenty of horror stories about that.....

We were too poor for ink...had to use blood.
your a hellavuh good sport Todd, i hope i can still maintain my humor when i get as old as you ;) i\'m already to much of a jaded cynic
-
was that back in the day with the old school marm, all ages in the same classroom writing with ink and a feather........

lele believe it or not you 2 are sort of my inspiration as far as success stories and the EH school system ;)
lets say for the record that im just discussing schools ... but my kids are both girls so those prep schools are not an option, and will be kindergarten and 6th grade. my mom teaches 4th @ ferrara, so i know ALL (like 10) teachers there and i love that school, plus ive lived in that area and it\'s nice quiet family friendly etc. i know the HS has gotten "worse" (what hasnt?) in recent years but its still miles above, say, hillhouse (although new haven has career, etc magnets). what i dont get is why everyone complains about the middle school - its old the kids suck (all of a sudden???), theres fights theres gangs theres drugs etc etc etc ... Shay will only have a year in ferrara if thats where we go and then i\'ve got to figure something else out cuz the middle school sucks that bad?
freespirit ... i am impressed - i would love to hear your story sometime you want to share (thats a lot of schools!)
i LOVE milford but i really want to be somewhere between guilford\'s 1-room schoolhouse and new haven geographically.
so if any more staven kids or teachers have insight i\'m still listening.

Guilford\'s one room school house was awesome when I went there...I hear they\'ve progressed a little bit since then though...

basically, Staven is fine, then send whoever to Prep, ND, or Lyman Hall
Heeeeey, what about a girl? You listed two all boy schools. Honestly, I think ND seems to produce a strange mixture. You\'re either straight edge or off the deep end. I think its because the element of Waste Haven is there.

-need to update my database
Per usual!

from my experiences, the east haven school system is a very good one, until the high school. i\'ve said it in a thread here and there, and I think some of the other EHHS alum can vouch, but they didn\'t even teach us what a thesis was until senior year (if you were lucky) and even that was only a week or so to what a \'thesis statement\' was. other bad parts of the high school were teachers who were on the verge of retirement so didn\'t give a damn (Ms. Desenti, et al), which was pretty cool when you were a student, but sucked ass when you got to college (for me anwyay, then again I started going downhill freshman year). my EH school history:
POPS (Parents of Pre Schoolers; taught by my mother for quite some time, but no longer exists, though I may make her restart it since she is losing her job June 29 and she always loved it)
K-5: D.C. Moore (basically the other half of Momauguin)
6: D.C. Moore > Tuttle> St. Vincents> D.C. Moore (don\'t ask)
7-8: JMMS
9-12: EHHS
basically, Staven is fine, then send whoever to Prep, ND, or Lyman Hall
As for New Haven, I only know about what I hear from my buddy\'s wife (she\'s a kindergarten teacher there), and it\'s bad news.

a few schools I\'ve attended:
Bethany - Bethany Community School
Cheshire - Dodd Jr. High
Florida - Ft. Pierce Central
Goshen - Goshen Center
Hamden - Spring Glen, Shepherd Glen, Hamden Middle
Homeschooling
Northford - Stanley T. Williams, Totoket Valley, NBIS
North Carolina - Carnage Magnet School
Norwalk - Norwalk High
Orange - Hebrew Day School
Wallingford - Moran Middle School, Sheehan

I went to K-12 in the West Hartford School System
My HS Conard was in the top 10 public HS in the country at the time and it won that status many years before I was there.
Cannot say better things about the public schools in that town. Not sure what it is like now but I cannot imagine much has changed.
West Hartford also has many private schools. There is Kingswood Oxford, Loomis Chaffee etc etc many a fine school in that area.
It isn\'t that far from Cromwell either

any input appreciated - please share what you liked and didn\'t like, about the school you attended as a kid, or your kid\'s school, or your school if you\'re a teacher.
i\'m particularly interested in anyone who went to east haven and i know there are lots of you, branford, or new haven public schools. i\'m particularly leaning toward ferrara (staven) or nathan hale (new haven) districts but then east haven has just the one middle school and new haven really falls downhill in higher grades :(.
i dont like carbone - the building looks like its going to fall down and go figure, momauguin (sp?) has lower test scores.
thanks!
i grew up in east haven, but didn\'t go through the school system. I went to catholic school at St. Mary\'s in Branford. Which I loved. I was there k -8. And then went on to private high school at Sacred Heart Academy. Right there, I know that sounds expensive...however, it really wasn\'t too bad. (Trust we didn\'t have lots of money). My mom was on a payment plan for st. mary\'s and then because of my grades, i received scholarships for high school.
I knew some kids who went to the public schools in branford. their school system seemed pretty good. I honestly would pick branford over east haven schools. (I think i may have just started a riot). But thats just me.

 let me know if they\'re hiring! ;) West Haven is in the middle of a budget crisis, & layoffs will be an inevitable part of the upcoming year. :sadban:
I had a reply all set, but realized I have been a bit tough on Robyn of late and will let this one go uncommented.....

My kids go to school in Milford and are doing well. ......I teach in Milford...(maybe that\'s not a good thing).....actually it\'s a good decent school district and not very far from "staven.
-
I went to EH schools....
& I am fine :)
Overbrook (don\'t think it is an elementary school anymore) >
East Haven Middle School (now Carbone...sortof...)>
East Haven High School (the old one)....
not sure if this is at all relevant...none of these places "really" exist anymore
:)
that sounds like Rhode Island direction giving....... "well you take a right where the old Apex used to be then you take a right where Jenny\'s Convenience store used to be i think it\'s a Cumberland Farms now...."
:banwave:
oh that explains the decline :duck:
-
hey whats wrong with Wallingford... a good portion of .info are Wallingford natives.
