Geddy Lee ESPN side project: glam/prog rock band Iron Diamond
Posted at 09:50 AM
The ESPN commercial featuring Geddy Lee that I first mentioned a couple weeks back has been airing regularly and I pointed you to the YouTube link over the weekend. With all the hullabaloo of the last couple days I didn\'t get a chance to post many details about the commercial - which is for fantasy baseball on ESPN. It features the ESPN crew including John Kruk and Peter Gammons along with several special guests including Geddy Lee performing as the glam/progressive rock band Iron Diamond. The song played is called Guide Me Master. The band even has a MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/irondiamondrocks) which has a lot of great photos and the commercial posted. For those of you who don\'t have access to MySpace I\'ve posted a few of the pics. The band members are as follows:

John Kruk: lead vocals, ESPN Baseball Tonight Cohost
Peter Gammons: vocals, guitar, ESPN Baseball Tonight Cohost, writer
Bronson Arroyo: vocals, guitar, 2006 MLB All-Star Pitcher
Geddy Lee: vocals, bass, Rush frontman, fantasy baseball genius
Gary Sheffield: drums, MLB slugger with 455 career HR\'s and counting
Joe Borowski: keytar, closer, 2006 Comeback Player of the Year Finalist
Jennie Finch: vocals, ESPN Fantasy Analyst, Olympic Gold Medalist
Matthew Berry: vocals, Senior Director of Fantasy for ESPN.com
Eric Karabell: vocals, ESPN Fantasy Analyst, ESPN Radio Host
Buster Olney: vocals, ESPN the Magazine Senior Writer, NY Times\'

There\'s also a great interview with Geddy where he talks fantasy baseball up at ESPN.com here. Thanks to reader Xanagirl for pointing me to the MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/irondiamondrocks).

I heard a track off the new album on the radio the other day.

I don\'t recall the song title but the bass line was pretty cool very funky, it didn\'t match the lyrics IMO that well but the music was very good. The sound wasn\'t typical Rush. Much more bouncy if that makes sense.

I would have to listen to it again but I thought it was decent.

Much like Dave when stadium arcadium came out, I am torn at the offer. While I appreciate it, Rush is something special. I need to purchase it and listen to the album the whole way through, with the linear notes, etc. See what letter it\'s brought to you by, thanks to the omega factor, and all the other subtle jokes they put in. If you happen to come across any bootlegs from the upcoming tour I would be interested as those are all stealth jobs, but the album I think I will wait for the release date.

Good things come to those who wait.

Rush\'s last good album = A Farewell to Kings.

Farewell to kings= part 1 of 2
Hemispheres = part  2 of 2

This is blatent in the cygnus x-1 book 1/book2 saga but even moreso when you look at the setlists since those albums came out and see how they segway all the songs from both albums together. Reviews are talking about how much this album is like hemispheres, which means it is so much like a farewell to kings, which means mark you should buy it.

While I think most of the middle east is a piece of intolerant, stone age camel ****, Dubai, U.A.E is really a bright spot.  Keep an eye on this up-and-comer, one of the few places that realizes they need to have a diversified economy that isn\'t 95% oil exports.

Whoops, is this the Rush thread?

Well this did result from speculation that the music might be political.  :duck:

Jocelyn- I think you missed my point.  I was not saying I\'d rather deal with the Muslims over Christians.
I\'ve traveled once to Bahrain and once to Istanbul.  I was extremely nervous before both trips, Bahrain especially, mainly in apprehenison of cultural differences.  I was relieved to find these highly developed, urbanized, liberal parts of the Muslim world were not as different as I had feared.
Just recently I went to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.  I didn\'t give culture clash a single thought before hand, after all I\'m staying in the good ol\' US of A. However one individual asked me about my ethnic background (I have an Irish name, he asked if I am Catholic) and began to force the topic of religion into conversation.  I believe I offended him when I appruptly stated it was not a topic I wished to persue.
Here\'s my point (to anyone still reading):  Major cities of the world that participate heavily in international commerce are developing a "world culture".  It has it\'s pro and cons, (ie very tolerant, yet everything revolves around $).  More isolated areas of our country and others are rebeling against this with nationalism and religious fanaticism.  I\'ve started to feel the result that an urban American may feel more comfortable abroad in a major city, than in his/her home country in a rural area.  I was really shocked by this, and I\'m not yet sure how I feel about it.

On an unrelated topic, I hear Rush has a new album coming out...

In summary, there are 2 "sick" instrumentals; the album is 60 minutes long; old gear was used (which jibes with an earlier rumor about a mellotron being utilized); Alex used the same amp he used when recording Hemispheres on Far Cry; and the album will be available on vinyl. Rumor or not - this is all great news.

Al, I would suggest starting with "Playing the Fool/The Official Live Gentle Giant."  It was recorded on tour in the fall of 1976.  The DVD "Giant on the Box" is also highly recommended with 2 live performances and many extras.  Also, lots of stuff on YouTube.

Thanks mentioning Gentle Giant. They were probably the most amazing, and underrecognized progressive rock bands that ever existed!  Saw them twice and have lots of their albums and both of their recently released DVDs.  Talk about multi-instrumentalists.  BTW, they are British.

Which albums would you suggest checking out?

"You try to put your own way of seeing the world into some kind of congruence with other peoples, and that\'s difficult for me," he admits. "I mean, I see the world in what I think to be a perfectly obvious and rational way, but when you go out into it and see the way other people think and behave, and express themselves on church signs, you realize, \'Well, I\'m not really part of this club.\'"

Wow.  I\'ve had alot of similar feelings lately.  I was in Oklahoma and Mississippi on business, and I know exactly what he\'s talking about.  A few times I had people force religion into conversation and I really wasn\'t sure how to handle it.  I\'ve traveled to Muslim countries in the same capacity, and usually they steer clear of the religion topic.  It\'s kind of understood we agree to disagree.  It is difficult when people of your own country assume you (should) agree with them when you do not.

At the beginning of the video there is a close up of Billy Corgan\'s guitar on which a Rush sticker is clearly displayed. Corgan has always referred to Rush as a major influence and along with verbally giving thanks to Rush, performed a live, unplugged version of "Limelight" during a Smashing Pumpkins\' concert in Toronto, Canada, in March 2000

Title: New Rush Album 5/1/07

Rush has set a May 1 release date for its 18th studio album, "Snakes & Arrows." The Anthem/Atlantic set will be preceded by the single "Far Cry," which will hit U.S. rock radio outlets in mid-March. "Snakes & Arrows" is the follow-up to 2002\'s "Vapor Trails."

Drummer Neil Peart previously told Billboard.com some of his lyrics for the new songs were inspired by his motorcycle journeys throughout the United States, chronicled in his book "Roadshow: Landscape With Drums."

"Just seeing the power of evangelical Christianity and contrasting that with the power of fundamentalist religion all over the world in its different forms had a big effect on me," he said.

Dates have yet to be announced, but Rush will return to the road for the first time in three years this summer.

sounds about right. I wonder if this means there are going to be religious overtones and if so to what level and on which side of the debate. Still have not read roadshow although I loved masked rider.

I\'m such a sucker for good prog rock!  I admit it.  go ahead let the flaming begin...

for those in need of geat old school progresive jams check out the Norwegian band Gentle Giant.  Google it.  These guys were one of the first to do what everyonelse coppied.

Krispy, I\'m couldn\'t agree with you more!  Thanks mentioning Gentle Giant. They were probably the most amazing, and underrecognized progressive rock bands that ever existed!  Saw them twice and have lots of their albums and both of their recently released DVDs.  Talk about multi-instrumentalists.  BTW, they are British.

12 second sound clip on the main sight

They change time signature like 5 times in it. SOOOOO HEAVY.... The hemispheres refrence is clearly because of the F#7 add 11 at the end.

that sample left me wanting more. 12 seconds of music= practically nothing for me to base an opinion on. That being said, what i heard i liked(It helped that there were no vocals).

you need to go listen to litz and stravinsky if you think prog started with gentle giant. Also, I own 2 of their albums. 3friends and octopus. (guessing on the names, it\'s been a few years since I put them on)

I own everything they have released with the exception of the 8 tracks, 2 albums on LP and the record singles, but they never put out any extra stuff on the singles anyway. I will buy anything they ever release. I\'ve been listening to them and the dead since I was in 5th grade, introduced to both almost at the same time.

I was an outspoken Rush hater for a long time, but this past Freakout changed my mind a little.  The Breakast doing Working Man is nasty.  I\'ve heard it on the radio a few times since, and it\'s just a great song.  I\'ve come to the conclusion it\'s the awful falsetto vocals I can\'t stand.
Def. one of my top 5 tB covers.
Vocals are my main problem w/ both Rush and Yes. Did these 2 bands have the same lead singer or what? (I know I know they def didn\'t). Anyways, musically I think both of said bands are ser. I will check out the new album but its very doubtful i will buy it.

Rush was aksed to do Bonnaroo Festival. They declined. Too busy a schedule with their own tour was the reason given.

Quote from: Rushblog
Alex Lifeson says new album will be "heavier and more powerful" - The new album is indeed heavier and more powerful - very Hemispherical. :)

According to FMQB.com the first Rush single titled Far Cry from the new album Snakes and Arrows will be released on March 19-20 rather than March 13 as was originally rumored. Yesterday Blabbermouth.net and FMQB.com both reported on the single and rumored tour dates first leaked to the net (via Counterparts) earlier this week. Just to recap, the rumored dates are as follows:

Jun. 13 - Nashville, TN @ Starwood Amphitheater
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater
Jun. 16 - Tampa, FL @ Ford Amphitheater @ Florida State Fairgrounds
Jun. 18 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater
Jun. 19 - Charlotte, NC @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
Jun. 27 - Mansfield, MA @ Tweeter Center
Jul. 02 - Wantaugh, NY @ Jones Beach Amphitheater
Jul. 04 - Darien Lake, NY @ Six Flags
Jul. 07 - Homdel, NJ @ PNC Arts Center

Another rumor that I\'ll throw out that I read a few days ago on progarchives.com is that there will be some keyboards and a mellotron on the new album.
