The photos Jackie has of the implosion are incredible. Better than any from the papers that I have seen.

I got the watch it go down from the non-moving Q-bridge. Was a pretty cool thing to see that close. Didn\'t realize how loud it was cos I had my radio on, but as Dave said, he heard it from his house as did my parents. It definitely shook the bridge which was a little sketchy.

If anyone is interested, today\'s NH Register has a whole big front page article on the Coliseum.
-
easy solution = don\'t go to bed Fri. night! ;)
I\'m gonna do my best to be there Sat. morning - the Coliseum has been a New Haven legend since I was a kid :awwyeah:
You\'re right, thats probably the best way!
That place was thee place......going to see New Haven Nighthawks games with my Pops will always be a sweet memory....

I\'m so glad i dont live downtown anymore (my car was always parked in the george st. garage and my building was on the corner of orange, crown, and george) ....cause my ass would have gotten kicked out of bed quite early.

COLISEUM
The implosion will take place Saturday, January 20, at 7:30a.m. Note that by 5:30p.m. the night before all cars parked in the Ninth Square George Street Garage and George Street surface lots must be moved.
January 20th no cars will be allowed within the safety perimeter bound by the Temple Street Garage, Union Avenue, Crown Street, and South Frontage Road after 6a.m. and no pedestrians will be allowed after 6:30a.m.
The viewing area will be the top levels of the Temple Street Garage and there will be free parking. Berms will be built to capture dust and the area will be watered down. About two hours after the implosion streets will be re-opened. Cleaning activities will continue through the day.

I have a great idea, why don\'t they take down the rest of that useless state they call Connecticut along with the NHC? Who really needs a land mass between Boston and New York anyhow? Just sink it all into the ocean. New Haven, Hartford, Putnam, Enfield, Cheshire, Waterbury, Middletown, Storrs, we don\'t discriminate. Sink it all.
Ouch..... how can you call us useless???? Without East Haven, the world would not know of The Breakfast.
-
no one mention anything that ain\'t legit when you\'re on the phone with wolfy. his **** is officially tapped after that last comment.

Wolf= Taliban against CT!!!!

It was supposed to be raffled off to someone who donated to the 2005 Thanksgiving food drive. This has been delayed a while.
As for the tunnels- 100% real. There are also some (not sure if connected) underneath city hall, and the courthouse. The parking garage under New Alliance Bank at the corner of Church and Elm has access to them. The Wachovia across the street (my former employer) has it\'s vault in the basement, and whenever a vehicle passes through the tunnel it causes the things to vibrate and hum a bit, causing a long standing myth that the building is haunted.
By the way these tunnels were on the news alot around 2004 when local officals became concerned they may be a target for terrorists.
See finally someone else who can prove I\'m not crazy with my tunnels!!!
The ones underneath the courthouse are not connected to the others. Since they run under the federal building, courthouse, city hall.....you can\'t travel those unless you have proper ID (i.e. an employee). Shameful. Trust I tried.
The ones under the coliseum run under temple street, george street, parts of orange, and maybe almost up to the green.

I heard that the Register or some New Haven based entity was raffling off a chance to be the person to push the detonation button.......

I remember when I was 8 or 9 I went to a car show there and I thought I was the **** because I got to sit in the Back To the Future DeLorean.

Someone should fly a radio controlled toyplane into it right as the implosion happens.:duck:
-
todd, it\'s an implosion, not an explosion
I\'m sorry Mr. PettyProperPants, Should I have said "blown in"???
The one thing I\'ll never forget about that place was more than once driving that tightly spiraling ramp in the parking lot while tripping.
:that: I saw over a hundred concerts there, along with my first Dead show in \'81. Back in high school, a friend of mines dad worked for the lighting company that did most of the concerts. We were able to go up in the catwalk once. Now that is trippy!!!

oh and mark, Joc\'s right. You\'re a bastard!
(Even though neither Jocelyn or myself were ALIVE when said show took place)

I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra warm up for Jeff Beck there in 1975. What a great show that was.
Bastard!

That place holds a lot of memories for me from CT in the 70\'s. I remember seeing Zappa/Beefheart, GD, ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, Bowie, and many more I probably can\'t remember. The one thing I\'ll never forget about that place was more than once driving that tightly spiraling ramp in the parking lot while tripping.

I watched the Jamestown Bridge blow up from about a mile away and that was pretty cool, i\'m sure the colliseum going down would be awesome to watch as well.
-
man, i saw my first ever concert there..... the Flaming Lips and CandleBox.... along with some family events..... i\'d love to see that thing go down. they had the old Jamestown bridge blown up here in RI and they did a internet televised event... it was pretty cool i wonder if they\'ll do the same thing for this

Those tunnels sound intriguing!
I\'m telling you, it sounds a little corny....but it was alot of fun. There are all these old signs for Macys...like unloading and loading docks. There was a point we SWORE we were underneath the omni hotel, but we weren\'t sure. Old spray painting and grafitti from the 70s. I think half way through i realized there could be rats down there with us, and i demanded to go back to surface.
Definitely calling shennanigans on the underground new haven tunnels....I am sure it was part of a drug induced hallucination....
Oh, you just said my favorite word: shennanigans!
No drugs..honest. Just Pizza and Watermelon Ale from BAR. And my friend Paul\'s crazy yellow jeep. I bet they are closed now. For shame.

Don\'t get me all excited!!!

I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra warm up for Jeff Beck there in 1975. What a great show that was.
I also saw Aeorosmith there around the same time frame - how utterly pathetic.
Phish in 95 was awesome.
I saw one Nighthawks game there, against arch rival Springfield. What a blood bath!

Maybe the Rolling Stones can play yet another reunion tour show in the coliseum as they implode it!!!
I wonder if they will have music playing as they implode it....kind of like in V for Vendetta....okay, maybe i am thinking WAAAAY too into this.
I actually saw TOOL play there in August of 2002. I am pretty sure that was the last concert ever there.

Call me crazy, but i really want to see this.
I lived in downtown New Haven Aug. 2005 to Sept. 2006. The coliseum was directly across from my building and parking garage. It was a constant sad reminder of what it once was. When I first moved in last fall, the implosion was scheduled for October, then it was moved to the summer and then to this winter. For the last year, it has stood as a dying dinosaur.
One night, my roommate, a friend, and I ventured in a jeep and traveled underneath the structure. There are a series of tunnels that loop around the downtown area. Very interesting and cool.
For me, I\'ll always have a soft spot for the coliseum and all the family fun events i attended there with my grandfather: circus, nighthawks hockey....but in the end, I think it will be exciting (yet melancholy) to see it come down.
