Title: Old Gansta Rap
Post by: MakisupaPJ on November 20, 2006, 10:50:54 am
Now that I am sober...I realized a few things...first off Marley\'s father was white....also I realized its got to be soooo damn hard to grow up in rough city where you have to be a gansta to survive..I think most of us are pretty damn lucky (how and where we grew up) and I see it everyday at school that these kids dont realize how good they have it....they need a good beat down from some real GAGSTAS

yahhhhhh.....I guess Im not alone! Well since when I started this thread Ive had a resurgence of Marley...anyway...the other day at school I was waiting for my 85 FJ60 landcruiser to warm up..(quite possibly the best vehicle ever made...but that should be another thread) and I started reading a booklet with my Bob Marley box set....it totally explains the whole Rasta religion and what Bob sang about...I guess I never knew the complete story, but it made me think that he was pissed at the white man (the baldheads)....which I would be too if I was forced into slavery...but it made me think about gangsta rap and reggae....they are very similar in the sense of a different race and the music that comes from their life or lifestyle...it really made me think....anyway music is music and it should be enjoyed by all...however I think its **** up when I see a scrony little white boy at Subway in New MIlford (right Mandler...I know you\'ve seen it too..and we live in the woods for the most part) wearing his baseball hat crooked with HUGE chains and medalions with beyond extra saggy clothes....Lately I\'ve been going up to them and being like "YO YO YO" just to have them check themselves..Im just buzzed and rambling so take this with a grain of salt....peace, PJ

I just started reading Can\'t Stop, Won\'t Stop by Jeff Chang. "A History of the Hip-Hop Generation"
Really good stuff. I am just wrapping up the section on the 70\'s. No glorified gangsters yet.

*posted while halfway through first of 3 straight listens to all of Billy Breathes*

Awesome book Can\'t Stop Won\'t Stop, I\'ve pimped that on here before.  If you\'re into this music you have to read it.  Also make sure to get movies Wild Style and Style Wars.

Funny this thread should come up today...had another DJ gig last night and made my first hunj!  I\'m spinning everything mentioned in this thread and other old school too.  People eat it up man.  I also spin some more modern underground stuff, funk, and enough hiphop club bangers to keep the ladies happy.  It\'s working so far.  Hiphop forever baby!

Also funny I went through the same phases a lot of people here are mentioning.  Age 10-11, all pop hiphop.  Go to summer camp summer \'91 11 years old, counselors get me into Phish and Dead, switch to that and also start picking up jazz.  Give up hiphop for 10 years.  21, in college, all rock and jazz.  Get back into hiphop mostly because of Jurassic 5\'s Quality Control.  Start listening to all the other non-radio hiphop stuff.  25, buy turntables, dig out all the stuff I listened to when I was 10, start doing parties and people go nuts for the ****.  The circle of life is complete.

BTW right there with ya Marical...Jam_On and Backspin are my 1-2 most listened to Sirius stations.  Backspin doesn\'t pull any punches boy...they\'ll play like the 4th song off the B-Side of an MC Wren album without blinking.  Great channel overall but you gotta have a few screws loose to really like everything they play.

I love Old Skool Rap.  Sirius 43 Backspin is easily my second most listened to station on Sirius after Jam On.  They play everything... Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Ice T, LL, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe D, BDP, Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest, Tone Loc, Too Short, Young MC, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Whoodini, Digital Underground, Easy E, Warren G, Naughty By Nature, to name a few...

Ahh those were the days. I remember rolling up on a bunch of friends in the parking lot of Carl\'s Jr. in my \'70 Chevy Impala and surprising the **** out of them. At the time I was totally known as a nutty Deadhead so when I would come around it was usually the Dead bumping. The look of astonishment from my friends as Straight Outta Compton came blasting out, I still remember to this day.
That **** turned everything upside down in Hip-Hop!

Oh and the in sound from way out is one of the dopest albums ever!!

Boogie Down Productions
Ice Cube
Kool G Rap and DJ Polo
Digital Underground (back when 2pac was wit em)
2Pacs 2Pacalypse Now (still his best body of work in my opinion)

Big Daddy Kane
Eric B and Rakem
The Ghetto Boys
EPMD

what about wu-tang?!? 36 chambers is a masterpiece. i listen to this album all the time, along with the chronic, doggystyle and also biggies ready to die. 92-94 was the pinnacle of gangsta rap, it been all down hill ever since.

on a side note, as they were mentioned, the beastie boys have an instrumental album called \'the in sound from way out\'. it came out back in 96 or so. its made up of the instrumental songs they had on check your head and ill communication but they were redone in the studio. this album really showcases their talents as musicians and is prob my fav album to put on when im blazed. i highly recommend it.

oh **** I forgot all about my Public Enemy phase...Also the second NWA album was good. Then I was into the Beastie Boys, which I still pop in...good instrumentals on some of their albums. But yeah once I started listening to the Dead and Phish, my approach to music changed...I became much more openminded...reggae, zepplin, black sabath, banjo plying,..anything but top 40 ****!

I listened a little but never got fully into any of the gangsta rap. That being said, straight out of compton is a classic album. Snoops album was really good to. "This ones for slick rick" :P

I wasn\'t really \'into\' anything back then - I just listened to everything. Then I discovered phish and my tastes became more refined. For me, it started with public enemy though, not run dmc. Fight the power.

Hey everyone...the other day I found an old cd case and found Dr. Dre\'s "The Chronic" (1992) and Snoop Dogs "Doggystyle" (1993) ...These came out when I was a senior in high school/freshman in college...anyway I have been listening to the 2 disks lately and they really have some good beats...did anyone else listen to this **** back in the day. I think today Im going to pick up some RUN DMC...that was my first rap album...this was all before I knew about so called "jam bands"...peace, PJ :bangun:
