as long as he can still pluck those bass strings we\'ll be alright.

i\'d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate mr. ron the save spears on his first day back at the gym yesterday in a very very very long time.
pretty sure he hates me right now though.
You put Ron through the work out ringer? You may have single handedly destroyed tonights show. I hope you\'re proud of yourself!!

I can use one of four Gold\'s Gyms in the area, and if I am travelling, I can get a pass which is good for 3 months which will let me use any Gold\'s Gym anywhere. This is great for me because I travel a lot for horse-related things.

You\'re a student, check out the college gym. They\'re usually dirt-cheap and not the least bit crowded.
The rate of my old UMass gym membership was a laughable $69 for the year.
Do Gold\'s and Bally\'s allow access to all gyms under the brand, or is access controlled locally by a franchisee?
Running on a treadmill is much too boring for me. I prefer to run outside, that way I don\'t have the option of turning off the machine if my motivation changes. With a long run, you\'re committed to it and have to at least walk home if you prefer to stop running. I usually force myself to run the 3 miles to and from the gym when I lift, though It really sucks starting out for the return run home an hour later.
The gym I belong to (24-Hour Fitness) just added a new facility in town, complete with swimming pool and indoor basketball courts. It\'s a nice opportunity to get the challenge of playing b-ball with East Oakland homeboys, while drastically reducing the risks associated with being on a neighborhood court. The hours of operation, 5am-11pm, are inconsistent with the club name, 24-Hour Fitness. :sigh:

Good luck @ the gym, and by good luck, I mean that I hope you get better results than I have. However, I go once a week and wonder why I\'m still fat.

I can look wherever, I just in trouble trying to lean really far to the left to see a tv (the only one with the game on) that was a little out of view.
The Boston rate beats what I\'m paying by $4. I may bring that up when I go tonight.

but i can\'t look up at something while i\'m running. always looking down at my feet. if i look up, i\'m taking a terrible tumble.
:idunno: That has to be psycological (sp). Think about if had to look at your feet while running outside. Trees, traffic, etc.
me = clutz. :D

As far as competetion, I work out with a Sasquatch who likes to talk a little smack. It pushes me to not be lazy, but I have to keep in mind that he is a hell of a lot bigger than I am, and as he starts to get in shape I\'m not going keep up with his weight.
Push yourself, but don\'t compete with people with different body types, ages, time devoted to the gym.

haha
Do you guys find yourselves getting competitive at the gym? Boy do I ever. The old track days coming back I guess. heh.
I\'ll admit, I do get a feeling of satisfaction when I\'ve run farther than everyone else I walk past. That part of the track spirit never goes away. But I know exactly how far and how fast I\'m running and how much I\'m lifting every time I walk in the door and I don\'t let anything deter me from the program. The day you start altering your workout based on other people, you\'re headed for trouble. It\'s nice to be at a gym with nice members, but at the end of the day it\'s like Pec said...it\'s just you and your workout and nobody else matters!
Running while looking up isn\'t a problem for me, I think it\'s from all the Ultimate I play. If you\'re having trouble, try to find a machine that\'s farther back from the TV so you\'re not looking at so much of an up-angle. You\'ll get used to it pretty quickly, then you can move to machines closer to the screen.
BTW I\'ve been on a month-to-month at Gold\'s for $19.95 since day one. Best rate in town. (Bally\'s was $39.95 a month!) You should tell them about the Boston rate and then just loudly suck in air through your teeth until they give it to you.
I\'ve had to gym-shop 4 times in the last 3 years with all of my moves, here\'s a couple more things I\'ve gathered in case you end up not liking Gold\'s:
GlobalFit gyms (Bally\'s, BSC/NYSC, Fitness Formula) have the best facilities but are outrageously priced and the ones I have seen are always impossibly crowded. They get people to pay a lot of money for extras that they never use. Don\'t like \'em.
Independent gyms have some advantages. They\'re usually cool about accomodating customers since the employees actually have power and the place can\'t afford bad pub. My independent gym in NYC was totally cool about letting me out of my 1-year deal 4 months early when I had to move. You\'d never get that at a corporate gym. Independents tend to be more low-budget i.e. some older, worn equipment and shorter hours but the right one can be great.
You\'re a student, check out the college gym. They\'re usually dirt-cheap and not the least bit crowded. Facilities are totally hit-or-miss, you just gotta check it out. If it\'s a good facility it\'s almost certainly the best deal in town, plus its on campus which makes it easy to get to.
The Gold\'s I\'m at now has been great. No contract, reasonable rate, great equipment, never more than half-full. The Bally\'s down the street is always so packed you can\'t move and costs twice as much. I still can\'t figure that one out, but I\'ll take it!

They let me do a no-contract one month membership so we\'ll see how it goes. I was suprised that I actually had to haggle with them about it though...
well, gyms are like cell phone companies in that way. they want your money guaranteed for X amount of time, even if you\'re not using the service. gyms make shitloads of money off of people who sign contracts, go for a month, and quit. i don\'t think any gym is big enough to hold every paying member if they all actually went.
So luckily I have my first ever personal trainer appointment tomorrow... Seeing as some lady who works there told me I was running too fast on one of the eliptical thingies... I never realized how hard it would be to run on a machine slower than my normal running pace. It made me feel very uncoordinated. I also got completely jumbled up trying to watch the game and run at the same time. It must have been a funny sight, me running at a manic pace getting all out of synch every time something happened in the game. he he.
i\'m fine on the eliptical, but i can\'t look up at something while i\'m running. always looking down at my feet. if i look up, i\'m taking a terrible tumble.

not really.. i really try to concentrate on me when i\'m at the gym, and not worry about anyone else.. it\'s a good motivation to see other people who are in better shape than you, as far as striving for something and setting goals, but i wouldn\'t say it\'s competitive. i also don\'t go to the gym to see how much i can bench press or how fast i can run (i mean, i\'m always striving to do better, but that\'s not what it\'s about) - i go to get in shape and healthy.. that\'s all.

<- has not been back to the gym since he bought the house. Free time is in short supply. :banghead:

haha
Well I went to Gold\'s tonight and then had a ton of cardio stuff and seemed very nice and were much more reasonable than the other yuppie gyms around here. I guess you save a lot of money if you don\'t need a spa. :)

I\'ve been at Gold\'s in Somerville, MA for 10 months and it\'s great. There aren\'t any more meatheads than there were at the gyms I belonged to in Amherst, New York, or Hartford. In fact, everyone at my gym is totally chill. You should take a tour and a free workout and decide for yourself if you like the place. 60% of the floor space at my Gold\'s is for cardio, and they have a complete and separate women\'s facility as well if that\'s your thing. What you should not do is stereotype people by what gym they belong to, or assume that a gym chain with hundreds of locations has nothing but the exact same type of people belonging to all of its locations. That\'s the stupidest way to choose a gym. Take the free tour at everything in your area, compare rates, and the right place will make itself clear to you.

they may do things differently up there, but i think gold\'s would be about the farthest thing from what you\'re looking for.. gold\'s is a real meathead gym.. ****, i don\'t even know if they have any cardio equipment in there..
my gym (manhattan fitness) was recently bought out by planet fitness (http://www.planetfitness.com). are there any of those near you? it\'s only $10/month, and it\'s the "judgement-free zone".
-
and was wondering if any of you had any experience with Gold\'s Gym. There are a bunch of different gyms in the area but there is a Gold\'s Gym super close to my house. I don\'t need anything fancy, just basic cardio and weight machines... but figured I would check to see if any of you had ever used them.
Because I know how you guys are all serious fitness/health buffs. ;)
