Title: So I\'m trying to quit smoking....
Post by: Me! on October 06, 2007, 01:30:34 am
I think it\'s hilarious that I started this thread way back when.

Quit for prob six months or more.

and............

yup.......

smoking again.

This may sounf stupid but I\'ve never had a problem when I actually deceide to quit.  I\'ve always gone cold turkey, and never was too plagued with cravings (don\'t get me wrong there were cravings)  I\'ve quit for two years, 8 months, and 6 months.  One day I\'ll do it for good.  Cigarettes are like an old friend that never forgets you, and is always there when you need him.

Ok, I don\'t have the time to read this whole thread.  what have people used to quit smoking and what works best?

also, anything that has a side effect of me killing someone is not an option as well.  thanks in advance.

join the club. i\'ve been trying (albiet not very hard) for the past year or so. wondering if anyone has heard or even tried that zero smoke stuff. its like a magnet near your ear that is supposed to rid you of your desire to smoke after only a few days.

just lock yourself in the house for three days and smoke joint after joint of headies till you pass out. worked for me.

i need to quit too, but i don\'t think my lungs can handle that much either.  maybe a big batch of brownies/cookies/coffee cakes for the morning is in order.

smoking seems fun and enjoyable when your doing it 20 times a day every single day. but your really just bullshitting yourselves and rationalizing a disgusting and deadly habit. as soon as you quit you will feel like an idiot for lying to yourself about it all those years.

had a big discussion about CHANTIX @ the hospital i\'m interning at today. I guess there have been some isolated case reports of increased psychotic episodes/hallucinations/aggression (http://houston.injuryboard.com/defective-drugs/chantix-claims-are-becoming-more-prominent.php) - especially associated with alcohol consumption for patients who have been taking CHANTIX. pretty scary stuff!

Sadly, when they perform preliminary clinical trials, these side effects occur in such a small amount of people that they aren\'t "clinically significant", or not even reported. It\'s only once the drugs are marketed on a large scale that they see these side effects appear. be careful folks!

This is what they think made the guy from The New Bohemians filp out and assault his girlfriend only to go and try to kick in her neighbors door. The neighbor thinking someone was trying to break in shot high through the door hoping to scare him away. Unfortunately the guy was like 6\'5" and died instantly from a gun shot to the head.

This happened only like a few weeks ago. His girlfriend said point blank that he had never been aggressive towards her ever. She said that they both had been trying to quit smoking and had been taking chantix for a few weeks or something like that. He was out drinking pretty heavily, she was driving him home and described that he was making strange weird references to books he had been reading and really off the wall behavior.

Really sad

lol right? i think vivid dreams/nausea are also drug "side effects".... and also nictoine withdrawal effects. interestingly, the labeling on the drug says that 18-month success rates following chantix therapy are in the 35% range.

but somehow they make a killing off this stuff. i mean it\'s literally FLYING off the shelves at my pharmacy alone. imagine the marketing nationwide....

pfizer should really investigate this side effect QUICKLY.... a massive drug recall/discontinuation is extremely expensive, but associated patient deaths are FAR more costly & detrimental to their name....

I only really enjoy nausea when it\'s accompanied by uncontrollable diarrhea.

They\'re making a killing \'cause there\'s a ton of smokers out there and every doctor is pushing this stuff like it\'s a miracle cure.  My doctor, on the other hand, told me that I don\'t smoke enough for him to prescribe it... I think that meant that I should smoke more... not sure though... doesn\'t sound very hippocratic.

I bet pfizer isn\'t running commercials because they don\'t want to do the standard side effect speal:

"While rare, side effects may include psychotic episodes, hallucinations, hysterical aggression, nausea, uncontrollable diarrhea, and the condition known as hot dog fingers."

increased psychotic episodes/hallucinations/aggression... sounds like fun, why don\'t you grab me some free samples on your next rotation.

Actually, all those side effects come pretty standard with nicotine withdrawal, so you\'re saying that the pills do nothing.

Another miracle of modern science!!

the chantix will cost you around $140 a month and you should plan on taking it for at least 3 months..............no big deal when you figure what you\'re paying for cig\'s each month! my prescription drug plan paid zippo since quitting smoking is considered "elective" (why would my heath care provider want to help me quit smoking? silly me...........)
I was lucky enough to pay only $25 for it - thankfully insurance covered most of it -:thumbsup:

a little bit of psychology for ya, based on the principles of conditioning (i.e. Pavlov\'s dog studies). wear a rubber band on your wrist and every time you feel the need for a cig, pull the rubber band and snap yourself. sounds harsh but it will work. scientifically, your mind will subliminally associate cigs with the uncomfortable feeling of the rubber band being snapped and you will no longer want them..... in theory

Good luck Holly!  I hear that after your 4th day of quitting, most of the nicotine is out of your system, so it should get easier.  Drink lots of water & chew lots of gum too.

My quit day w/ todd is 6/10, so we\'ll be where you are soon... I tried the patch, which didn\'t help at all.  This time around, I\'m trying a new pill called Chantix - it\'s like Zyban without all the side effects.  I hope it works!

i just wanted to see how people were doing since this last discussion.

i am on day 3 without cigs and i am quite delirious right now. i have to say that i would probably chew on tin foil or slap myself across the face if it meant that i could have a cigarette...but i won\'t.

any further advice/input on quitting smoking? i feel like i am going to lose it at work today.

\'Tom & Jerry\' Smoking Scenes to Be Cut
By Mike Collett-White
Reuters
LONDON (Aug. 21) - Turner Broadcasting is scouring more than 1,500 classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, including old favorites Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, to edit out scenes that glamorize smoking.

The review was triggered by a complaint to British media regulator Ofcom by one viewer who took offense to two episodes of Tom and Jerry shown on the Boomerang channel, a corporate sibling of Time Warner Inc.-owned Turner Broadcasting.

"We are going through the entire catalog," Yinka Akindele, spokeswoman for Turner in Europe, said on Monday.

"This is a voluntary step we\'ve taken in light of the changing times," she said, adding the painstaking review had been prompted by the Ofcom complaint.

The regulator\'s latest news bulletin stated that a viewer, who was not identified, had complained about two smoking scenes on Tom and Jerry, saying they "were not appropriate in a cartoon aimed at children."

In the first, "Texas Tom," the hapless cat Tom tries to impress a feline female by rolling a cigarette, lighting it and smoking it with one hand. In the second, "Tennis Chumps," Tom\'s opponent in a match smokes a large cigar.

"The licensee has ... proposed editing any scenes or references in the series where smoking appeared to be condoned, acceptable, glamorized or where it might encourage imitation," Ofcom said, adding that "Texas Tom" was one such example.

Akindele said cartoons would only be modified "where smoking could be deemed to be cool or glamorized," and that scenes where a villain was featured with a cigarette or cigar would not necessarily be cut.

"These are historic cartoons, they were made well over 50 years ago in a different time and different place," she added. "Our audience is children and we don\'t want to be irresponsible."

Turner Broadcasting in the United States could not immediately be reached for comment.

Ofcom said it recognized smoking was more generally accepted when cartoons were produced in the 1940s, \'50s and \'60s, but argued that the threshold for including such scenes when the audience was predominately young should be high.

About 56 percent of Boomerang\'s audience is aged four to 14 years old.

Early reaction to the review on Web logs broadly attacked Turner\'s decision.

"Have to dig out all those photos and films of (Winston) Churchill and airbrush out the cigars," said a message posted on the "Organ Grinder" forum on the Guardian newspaper\'s Web site.

The review was not the first time a famous cartoon character was forced to give up smoking.

Belgian cartoonist Maurice de Bevere replaced his most popular creation Lucky Luke\'s ubiquitous cigarette with a blade of grass, winning him an award from the World Health Organization in 1988.

Title: Vonnegut
Post by: SlimPickens on August 22, 2006, 02:03:54 pm
has an interview in the August Rolling Stone.

But then Vonnegut starts coughing, clearing his throat of phlegm, grasping for a half smoked pack of Pall Malls lying on a coffee table.  He quickly lights up.  His wheezing ceases.  I ask him whether he worries that cigarettes are killing him.  "oh, yes," he answers, in what is clearly a set-piece gag.  "I\'ve been smoking Pall Mall unfiltered cigarettes since I was twelve or fourteen.  So I\'m going to sue the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company, who manufactured them.  And do you know why?"
"Lung cancer?" I offer.
"No. No. Because I\'m eighty-three years old.  The lying bastards! On the package Brown & Williamson promised to kill me.  Instead, their cigarettes didn\'t work.  Now I\'m forced to suffer leaders with names like Bush and Dick and, up until recently, \'Colon\'."

i failed saturday night around 3am.

i\'m blaming it on westchester county.

in theory, smoking a drag or two off of cigs my friend was smoking and finishing the last three cigarettes in my three week old pack in my car while driving back to boston from 1:30-5:30am last night shouldn\'t stop me.

let\'s try this again

18 hours

(although like i said, i should have the easiest time at this)

either way robyn - the fact that you did manage to go a week or so is a huge step in the right direction.  every day you went was a huge success.

the first time i \'really\' quit (ha) it took me a few **** ups to get on track.

take it one day at a time.  that\'s all you can do.

i am done as well.

i went to ny on 7/15 hung out with my old friends from college, all who used to smoke and no longer do.

since i\'m all about getting rid of all the negativity in my life these days, i figured i might as well keep it up and not smoke.  i still have half a pack in my car from that night.

broke down on tuesday when i was wasted and had half a cig.  i\'m keeping it up though.

good luck robyn and todd, you guys can do it.  you\'ll feel MUCH better.  i didn\'t smoke for a year and a half and i started again when i went out and got hammered the day phish broke up ;)

by no means have i been a full time smoker but i can already see how much better i feel.

I quit twice using commits, they definitely get ya past the cravings and outta the routines associated w/ smokes.

but like an idiot, after close to a year w/out nicotine, I would start again for some dumb reason.

why does something bad have to be so good?

Best of luck, beat that sweet nicotine.  Your money and health will thankyou.

Everyday you go without is a big victory.
Spoil yourself in other ways for staying strong.
Don\'t listen to non-smokers who don\'t understand the achievement!  You know, those "2 days?!? big **** deal I\'ve gone my whole life" idiots.  (I\'d still love to smack the **** out of some of those people).

It does get easier (I smoked for 11 years).  Those torturous sessions of wanting one so bad you could scream do serve a purpose.  Those nasty cravings are temporary.

7 months for me, and I finally dropped the cigars too.

there was so much smoke at nin it made me nauseous. I\'ve probably had about 6 cigarettes in my life. They just never did anything for me. Of course, neither did pot or beer, so who am I to say. I would think excercise is def a good way to go. If you really get into a sport and enjoy it, but you\'re constantly out of breath, then that will become an extra motivation to do whatever you can to improve your preformance, i.e. don\'t smoke.

One of the funniest things I remeber from a concert was lemonwheel when they opened the show gates in the afternoon. Everyone was lined up and it was like a track meet - whoever goes the fastest gets the closest to the stage. Everyone started off about the same speed but then they started dropping like flies. By about the 100 meter mark there was a drastic lead difference in the pact. People were holding their sides, giving up and walking, etc. It was pretty funny.

I was 2nd row for that afternoon set. Everyone around me was in good shape.

honestly, i quit smoking a few weeks before the feb 4th knit show.  i went to a bunch of shows and the nauseating smell of rank cigarette all over me kept my desire to smoke far away. especially at the ardsley acres after party.  i think it all depends why you are quitting thats where you should look for reminders. becoming more active helps as well.  i feel like eating well, exercizing, and living a more healthful life is incentive to stay quit.

p.s. after months smoke free, ive been smoking cigs this whole week.  im fat and out of shape.  i eat too much fried foods and never go to the gym anymore. i am a hypocrite and none of you should listen to anything i say.

I quit cold turkey about 3 years ago. I live with a smoker. I didn\'t have an issue with being physically addicted but I found the hardest points to be at bars etc with all the smokers.

It is 1 of the reasons I started taping. It kept my hands and mind busy and after a while of being in those situations where everyone but me was smoking (I quit when Tobacco Road was still open and you could still smoke inside bars) it wasn\'t really a big deal anymore. I have to say the biggest mental hurdle for me was the fact that i was denying myself something that I liked. No one was tellingme I couldn\'t have them but me so it was kind of like being my own parent. I still think about them and every once in a while I will want to have 1 but I just don\'t.

The green takes the edge off becasue your still smoking, just it isn\'t doing the damage and you are still sticking to your decision not to smoke cigarettes.

So find a hobby at shows etc that will help a lot. Take pictures, become a taper etc etc it really does help and we still party really hard

I would recommend every time you want to smoke a cigarrette, just smoke a joint or bowl instead..

Then you won\'t be hurting your health and you\'ll actually get high. But then again, I smoked for like 4 years and quit with no problem at all... I guess things that have no effect on me in terms of getting my krunk on aren\'t really that addictive for me..

Mandler, glad to hear you have decided to quit smoking after enrolling in a remedial 4th grade health class!!  ;)

I was just thinking about smoking this morning, as I\'ve noticed there is a low percentage of smokers in my office (a couple out of 100 is pretty impressive).

/\\/\\/\\/\\ I was just about to say that some exercise helps too.  Really helps dispose of some of that nervous energy that comes with cravings.

Although, this from the guy who used to smoke during high school track meets and immediately after college rugby games.

Atleast Toad\'s has no good place to have one, you must leave your beer behind.

also, take it one day at a time, dont think about quitting forever.  no one can handle forever, but handling just today is doable.  sometimes even take it one hour at a time or even a few minutes at a time.  the craving will pass.  just dont smoke today.  worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

Exercise and LOTS of water. Take a weekend off from "hangin\' with the B\'Fam" if you think you might have to. When I quite for that 21 months, it started with a ski trip out west at an altitude you have trouble breathing in even if you\'re a non-smoker!! Started with the patch three weeks before going. After two days out there I didn\'t need a patch anymore. Totally break your habits!! Go for a hike/ swim. And from what I\'ve learned from prior times trying to quit, don\'t replace the cig with anything!!!! Just keeps your mind wanting to hold onto something!

Don\'t give up and good luck!!!! I\'m going to try again very soon!!!

It really helps with the whole mental "holy ****, you mean to tell me I can NEVER SMOKE AGAIN!?!?!?"
That is such a big part of it, so much mental, but it\'s also having something to do with my mouth/hands (and since i dont\' have a woman....;) ) I do have tea tree toothpicks wich help with the oral fixation, and honestly smoking herb helps sometimes, it relaxes me enough so I don\'t think about it....

but again the real test is the weekend, throwing in other various substances and setting makes me wanna smoke

Quote from: Denns Leary
You could have cigarettes that come in a black pack, with a skull and a cross bone on the front, called tumors and smokers would be lined up around the block going, "I can\'t wait to get my hands on these **** things! I bet you get a tumor as soon as you light up!

Me!, I commend you.

After smoking for 11 years, I haven\'t had one in 6 months.  And dude, I was ADDICT-TED!  I also really enjoyed it, and if they discover a painless cure cancer I\'ll start again tomorrow! Pointless daydreaming aside...

The best advice I can give you, is change your routine.  You are through the worst part of the physical addiction by now, so it\'s a matter of breaking habits.  What really helped me is that I quit a week before I went on vacation, and the whole different atomsphere got me through the death trap that is days 5-15.
Also, I must confess, I use a crutch.  I bought a box of cigars, I smoke about 2 a month.  It really helps with the whole mental "holy ****, you mean to tell me I can NEVER SMOKE AGAIN!?!?!?"  It\'s relaxing, I look forward to them, and their stronger nature completely kills the urge for a while.  They\'re cumbersome to carry, and awkward in most social situations so you\'re not likely to pick up a new addiction.
Lastly, if you lapse, don\'t give up!  I tried and failed about 20 times before my recent success.

I haven\'t had a cigarette since Sunday morn, and last night was the first time I had really wanted one.  I generally have no problem not smoking mon-fri afternoon, but fri night thru sun morn gets really really hard.  So I guess what I\'m starting this for is to ask if anyone has any good methods (other than nicotine patches and gum) for avoiding smoking in a group of heavy smokers.  Not avoiding the smokers but avoiding the smoking for myself, the weekends are always when I break down.  I\'ll go a week without and then go to som esort of B\'Fam event and all my progress is **** canned.

Oh and the fact that I love to smoke doesn\'t help either.
