Title: Congrats Chris Pitch!!!
Post by: ChrisPitch on December 24, 2007, 05:19:39 pm
Just figured I\'d report that in addition to the musical merriment from the Party at Key 17 Studio on Saturday, I performed two sets of material, the first which was my second attempt at stand-up comedy, the second which consisted of a poem, then a rap that\'s comprised entirely of palindromes, which as I\'ve done once before, I read twice.

I\'d say that I was highly satisfied with my stand-up performance (which I felt went much better than the first time) and was mostly happy with the audience\'s response. I\'d add that I was extremely happy with both my performance and the response for the second set.

And though there was supposed to be video coverage of said event, after the party the cast of the Golden Girls mugged me, stole the video, sold it on eBay (for a whopping sum, I\'m sure), and will use the proceedings to bankroll The Golden Girls Movie, which I\'m hoping to land a part in as Blanche\'s boyfriend. In other words, there were some technical difficulties that were beyond my control.

In any event, this is what I performed.

I: Blanche Dressing, Massive Gnat ****

II: Big Joe Pitch, Oozy Rat in a Sanitary Zoo, Oozy Rat in a Sanitary Zoo

Truly an outstanding time on many levels.

What the **** are you talking about?

 Saw that coming. Guess what I\'m saying is I can see you as more of a Mitch Hedberg (sans the early death) or Steven Wright type of comedian. Or you can just call my brother for a plethora of fun one-liners that fit into a single topic.

Chris, my only advice besides the obvious slow down (which was probably nerves if I had to guess) is less profanity. Don\'t know why, but I from what I know of you (which may not be that well), you\'re not that vulgar of a person and I think you could definitely be as funny and maybe more without all the profanities. And oh yea, more arangatang (sp) jokes.

Thanks guys. It now actually looks like my next attempt at stand-up will be at Southern this Friday night as part of the open mic for the first reading of Folio, which is the school\'s literary magazine.

Thanks Dave. And to everyone else who came. It feels good to have done something I\'ve wanted to do for a long time, something that is a major challenge on many levels.

I would term my performance last night as fair. It\'s going to take a lot of hard work to meet my standards with this, specifically in regards to pacing and tempo. And a set of brass balls the size of Jupiter certainly wouldn\'t hurt. Fortunately, I have no shame or fear of being embarrassed.

Monday, Nov. 5, is the next one. I anticipate writing different bits with a contrast of quick hitters and the more anecdotal material. And I plan on rehearsing them many more times than I did these.

There\'s a few hoops to jump through about set two but we\'re working on it. So stay tuned.

for his first time doing it, you have to give mr.pitchy some props.

Glad that I was able to hang out last night with you both and relive the evening.

Volunteers was the Tom Hanks movie you were thinking of.

Nothing like pasta din-, er, breakfast...

so far so good pitchie.

hope to make the 11/05 show.

I am glad you witnessed me own Tim and Pitch in the last half of that movie game.

4 am dinner was awesome!!  We were like a little sitcom family or something.  I dare not mention the excellence of the sauce (oh wait, i did) cause i was being mocked that i would.

it was great meeting you.  I am sure we will hang out again in the future!:)

So, on Monday, Sept. 17 at New Haven\'s Caf? Nine, I will attempt my debut at stand-up comedy. I was originally slated to do it this week, but rescheduled for a variety of reasons. So at approximately 10 p.m., I will take the stage and hope to put together a series of words that evoke laughter or nausea from the crowd. Either way. I will bump this thread a few times in the weeks leading up. Hope to see a few come down. Admission is zero.

Title: Congrats Chris Pitch!!!
Post by: ChrisPitch on June 05, 2007, 01:07:55 pm
Well, last night turned out to be a somewhat raucous occasion at Cafe Nine and that was surely fine by me. I\'m not really used to reading in a bar atmosphere and consequently I was even louder than usual, which is no lean feat. I also think it\'s fair to say that my choice of material and intake of Crown Royal played a role in the volume as well. And may I say my gang of goons were equally loud and that\'s much appreciated. Special thanks to none other than Tim Palmieri for video taping last night\'s performance. I\'m gonna work on getting it on youtube this week.

For the record, I read "Big Joe Pitch," a poem about my father; "Whaddup Motherfucker?" a highly inane short story; and "Oozy Rat in a Sanitary Zoo," a rap comprised entirely of palindromes, which for some reason, I felt compelled to read twice, one right after the other.

As always, it was an evening of madcap and mischief and we took the party from the Niner to Justin\'s studio and then to a diner in New Haven where there were nearly a dozen people bumping and grinding by their cars with music blaring at like four in the morning. It was the closest thing I\'ve seen to a Club MTV dance party since Downtown Julie Brown rocked my middle school world.

Anyway, thanks again gang! Wubba Wubba Wubba!

Title: Another Preposterous Pitchie Performance!!!
Post by: ChrisPitch on May 25, 2007, 11:55:13 am
I just wanted to let everyone know that I?ll be reading as part of edition No. 367 of Beatnik 2000, a weekly series that primarily features performance poetry at New Haven?s Caf? Nine, on Monday, June 4.

I?ll be reading three pieces, and though time constraints will not allow me to do any proper fiction or the one-act play, I will nonetheless be performing a poem, a completely ridiculous short story, and most likely, a rap comprised entirely of palindromes. I just did open mic at Caf? Nine the other day, and based on the scene, it seems a place like this allows me to read, how do I say, some of my more ?experimental? material. Anyway, I?ve read all three of these pieces before at some point.

Start time will be at approximately 10 p.m. Admission is nil.

Hope to see some heads.

Chris

I asked Cori at the reading if she was gonna be reading her story and she said she wasn\'t going to be reading her piece there.....I read it in the Folio there and thought it was very good.....

Thanks for the copy Todd....

Coris\' story is great. I read it back when she first wrote it. She told me she had no plans of reading but was kind of recruited by one of her friends from class to read so she did. She sounded bummed though because she said all the b\'fast fans had already left by that time.

Chris, even better than I thought it would be. Bravo.

Well, I have nothing to say but thank you to about a zillion people.

I have to start with Kevin Ross, who endured my rehearsals and delivered in the clutch, giving a tremendous performance, both physically and verbally. The show would not have been nearly what it was without his dedication to learning the material and then his execution of it when game time arrived.

And the reason why I know Kevin gave such a great performance wasn\'t just because of the positive audience response, but because I watched the performance on DVD last night. That\'s right. I go to Jake\'s for  the third set after hanging with some of my literary cohorts at Delaney\'s, and who do I see but Ken with about twenty copies of last night\'s show in his hand. I was like, "are you serious?" to which he replied, "sorry it took me so long." That was a totally unexpected cherry on top for last night. I bought Ken a beer. I felt like I should have bought him a car.

Just as a little aside, after watching the performance, I cannot believe that I did not sustain serious injury when Kevin kicked me into the chair. But the best was watching a Southern professor cover her mouth in fear and shock each time he threw the books at me.

Ok, back to the thanks. I have to thank Todd for volunteering to videotape last night in an effort to perhaps get this baby onto youtube. And Dave also deserves a ton of thanks for taking numerous photos that resulted in a slideshow which really does trace the anger and intensity of the performance as it builds throughout, simply through images with no words.

The fact that last night is documented in so many ways makes it all the better and again I cannot thank you guys enough. I don\'t often use the term surreal, but it was truly a surreal experience watching that just hours after we did it.

I also want to thank the three of you--and all my other friends--for going last night. About half the crowd consisted of my posse and the fact that you were all there means everything to me. It\'s a situation where it makes me step it up during the performance because I want you all to feel like your getting your money\'s worth (even though admission was free) and also makes me feel even better afterwards as I look at your expressions and realize we did good work. It also just helps my confidence in general knowing that you\'re all there and I couldn\'t have asked to share last night with a better group of wonderful people. You are all dear friends and I love each one of you.

Of course, the staff at Folio, headed by editor and former classmate of mine, Jeff Schultz, need to be thanked for putting out a fine book with numerous talented authors, for hosting monthly readings that promote and unite Southern\'s literary community, and for allowing us, specifically me, to make fools of ourselves in a room full of people. And just the English department in general needs a shout out. I\'ve made some good friends--both classmates and professors--since I\'ve dedicated myself to being a part of this community in the last year and I am extremely grateful. I only have two classes left this semseter in Advanced Fiction Writing with Professor Tim Parrish and I know I\'ll be jonesing for classes like that when I take Intro to Algebra next fall. Ugh.

But to be fair, I was not the only performer last night and I want to give credit to the others who read their works from Folio and gave fine showings in their own right, including my friend and classmate, Nick Dorio, whose short story, "A Small Glass Jar About the Size of an Egg," won first place in Folio\'s fiction contest; Rayon Dwain Lennon, another classmate of mine, whose poem, "Seaview Gardens, Jamaica," took first in that contest; and of course, our own Cori Payne, who gave a solid reading of her short story "Merry Freakin\' Christmas!" at open mic.

To conclude, I just again want to express how happy I am with the way everything turned out. It was a night that I will remember for the rest of my life. Kevin and I rehearsed the piece seventeen times and our hard work and focus resulted in a performance that I would say was an unquestionable home run.

So once again, thank you!

Pitch

Fantastic one-acter Chris. You and Kevin had a great chemestry up there.  You have definitely raised the bar of your work.  I am glad to know that shallow end pool vaccuming has helped keep you in shape for all the physical comedy you perform.

And don\'t worry Pitchie, when you become a father all of your feelings about seeing a baby walk for the first time will change.

Please keep the work coming as I feel laughter is by far and away the best medicine for all that is alling us, pretty soon it will be time to start calling you Dr. Pitch.

Thanks again and see you soon.....

PS. I forgot to grab an edition of Folio, so if you could grab one for me at some point in time that would be great.....

i don\'t fit your age criteria for the prowl, but I can lend you guys some Southern Hockey t-shirts to make it look like you have great Owls spirit. ****, I haven\'t been to southern since I went to school/played hockey there, which is around the same time that a certain band recorded a certain \'never-to-be-released-or-talked-about\' music video.

are we getting the shirts or not? do they both say Antbach on the back?

Unfortunately, Megan Macomber, the professor whose influence caused me to want to write fiction (way back when I took Intro to Creative Writing in 1999) does not teach at Southern and will likely not be in attendance. I haven\'t talked to her in years and I wish I had. She\'s a wonderful person. And is also a Mets\' supporter.

Well, I figured this was time for a little bump-a-rooski.

So, Kevin Ross and I are still performing our one-act play, The Perfect Schedule or Chris Piccirillo Isn\'t Even Trying Yet, as part of the release party for Folio, S.C.S.U.\'s annual literary anthology, this Friday at 7 p.m. on the third floor of the Adanti Student Center, which is located on the corner of Fitch and Crescent Street in New Haven. Whereas the event was originally going to be in the Grand Ballroom, it will now be in the Fireplace Lounge, which is the area that you will see as soon as you get to the third floor.

Kevin and I are going first, and although these events typically start at around 7:15, anyone who wants to see the two of us should plan on getting there a few minutes before 7 just to be safe. After us, the winners of Folio\'s poetry and fiction contests will be reading, which I expect to be some fine material, considering the authors.

Anyway, for those who don\'t know how to get to Southern, here\'s some directions:

get onto dixwell and take a right onto arch street if youre going towards new haven or a left onto arch street if youre coming from new haven. you then take a slight left onto fitch st. and continue until you have to take a left onto crescent. you will see the student center on your left at this point, and after you take that left onto crescent, you take a quick left into the parking lot for the student center. walk into the building and go up the stairs to the third floor.

just in case, here\'s a link for a map of southern: http://www.southernct.edu/aboutscsu/map/

and also just in case, the official address for southern is 501 crescent street, 06515.

We\'ve been rehearsing. We hope to see some of you there.

Chris

Thank you for posting this Cori! Kevin and I cannot wait to perform the piece, which we originally did for my theatre class last year. We hope to see a solid turnout of our peeps. There will be several talented writers reading at Southern that night.

I\'d also like to congratulate Cori for having her fictional piece "Merry Freakin\' Christmas" earn publication in Folio. It\'s very funny and was a well-deserved acceptance.

For those of you who went to Pitchie\'s last reading, I\'m sure you know he puts on quite a performance.  He will be giving a reading again next month.  Here are the details for anyone who wants to attend:

Chris Piccirillo and his good friend Kevin Ross will be performing the comedic one-act play they co-wrote at this year\'s release party for Folio, Southern Connecticut State University\'s annual literary anthology. The play is entitled, "The Perfect Schedule or Chris Piccirillo Isn\'t Even Trying Yet." Chris plays himself and Kevin plays his conscience. The play was the lone one accepted to Folio and their performance will be an additional one to go with those who will be reading the acceptances that placed in Folio\'s fiction and poetry contests.

The event is at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4 in the Grand Ballroom, which is located on the third floor of Southern\'s Student Center. More specific directions to follow.

Chris also has a creative non-fiction piece called "She Thinks I\'m Her Uncle" in Folio, marking the first time he\'s had something other than poetry accepted to the anthology, having previously had three poems published.

No problem Todd. And just so people know, I cut two brief passages of dialogue (from "chicken dinner again" to "and every time you hammer down at least five pieces" and from "t\'sup bub?" to "must be the next door over. I\'ll go knock.") to try to get down to the 15 minutes we were supposed to limit ourselves to. I also did not read the part about Tic-Tac\'s, which I actually added after I submitted it and was not part of the story the judge graded me on. I\'m unsure if I\'m gonna keep that section when I seek publication over the summer.

Had I known two other people would eclipse the 20-minute mark, I would never have cut, and believe me, I\'ll never do it again. But I\'m not complaining. I wouldn\'t trade the performance for anything.

For the record, I timed out at 17:10.

I\'d just like to express how happy I am with the way everything worked out last night. I couldn\'t have asked any more of myself in terms of the performance or from the audience in terms of their response, which fueled my energy and confidence, both as a result of laughs and occassional gasps.

My most heartfelt thank you a great group of friends. Sharing it with you made the night so much more special. Looking at you every now and again during the reading reminded me how lucky I am to have friends who went because they cared, and also, who have such lively personalities and strong characteristics. You all have a big influence over my writing and not just because I\'ve molded a character after one particular person; there\'s bits and pieces through my story that come from numerous conversations I\'ve had with all of you. I\'m truly lucky to live where I live and have gotten the chance to know, and shoot the ****, with such a fun, interesting, and intelligent bunch. Thanks again. And once again, a special thanks to you Fred and a little Livvy.

Also a special thanks to Dave for taping it with the microphone antlers. We were talking today about how we both would have regretted if it wasn\'t taped, which was somewhat of a last-minute decision. I appreciate it. I can\'t wait to hear it.

And a special thanks to Cori for helping publicize the event by starting this thread. We spoke on Tuesday and she had been about to post the directions, including the link of the map to Southern, when she saw that I had just done it hours prior. That was quite an eerie coincidence. Once again, I appreciate the effort.

Also, thanks to Tim Parrish, who taught the class for which I originally wrote the story\'s first draft last spring. He gave me outstanding comments that helped the expansion and revision of the story, much like many of my friends did. Tim MC\'d last night\'s proceedings and saracastically referred to me as the "ever-calming Chris Piccirillo." Let\'s just say I was a little spastic before the reading.

And finally, thanks to Tim for playing last night, which included a stellar version of L.A. Woman with an interesting fade-out ending, and Pete for hosting late night, which was a fitting capper to a night I\'ll remember for the rest of my life.

once again, thanks to everyone for your kind words.

regarding the directions:

its in engleman hall, room D253, also known as the common room.

so, get onto dixwell and take a right onto arch street if youre going towards new haven or a left onto arch street if youre coming from new haven. you then take a slight left onto fitch st. you will then see on your right a sign for pine rock ave, but rather than take that right, youre going to take a left into the parking lot thats on your left. park. you will then see two primary buildings: the library and engleman hall. engleman hall is the really big brick building. walk into it. the room is on the second floor. its in the corner of two hallways in the english department. the room number is displayed outside of the room, which looks like a lounge. at this point, if you cant find it, either ask people or call me and i\'ll meet you in or outside of the building. just please get there at 715 or 730 at the absolute latest because i dont want to have to leave the person whos reading before me by walking out during their reading. the cell is 623-6887.

just in case, here\'s a link for a map of southern: http://www.southernct.edu/aboutscsu/map/

and also just in case, the official address for southern is 501 crescent street, 06515. although that wont get you right to engleman hall, i felt it couldnt hurt to provide it.

and tim is in fact playing richter\'s afterwards so some us will be doing the deuce.

thanks. see yous there.

Well, there\'s nothing like shameless self-promotion so now\'s as good a time as any to give a little bump here.

I will in fact be reading my story, Procrastubration, tomorrow at Southern Connecticut and look forward to seeing some of my peeps in the house. I still have no confirmage regarding Richter\'s, but as far as I knew, Tim and various members from our circle of fools were coming to the reading and then we were going to shuffle off to Richter\'s. If there\'s no Richter\'s, then we\'ll likely shuffle elsewhere.

Thanks to everyone who PM\'d me and asked for a copy of the story. I\'m glad you all liked it and I appreciate your comments!

Chris

Good work Schmitty, I mean Pitchy.  That story was very good and the prize is well deserved.  See you at the reading. Kudos.

Thanks for posting that Cori! I\'ve put a lot of work into the story over the past year and it\'s an honor to be recognized. I look forward to reading it and listening to the other stories that night. I will also definitely be doing the reading>Richter\'s should there be a Richter\'s that night and it will surely be fun if some people come along.

Thanks again to everyone who read it and gave me kind and helpful comments. And a special thanks to you Fred. If anyone else wants to take a read, give me your email address and I\'ll gladly send it to you.

Chris Pitch\'s story Procrasturbation won second prize in SCSU\'s very competitive fiction writing contest.  There will be a reading on May 10th at 7:45 at SCSU in Engleman D253, the Common Room.  It\'s in New Haven so anyone going to see Tim at Richter\'s later that night should go to the reading first!

Here is what the judge had to say about the story:

The story of two semi-lovable losers and the four-year-old who loves
them both, this piece succeeds through the confidence of its narration,
the strong characterizations of the two men, and the snappy dialogue.
WYSIWYG is the rule, too, in point-of-view. The intensity of Schmitty\'s
focus on the various processes related to smoking bowl after bowl of
pot not only helps to illuminate those processes for the reader, it
also convincingly renders the psychic and physical environments of the
expert toker and his mercenary dealer. In short order, the author
establishes a nicely balanced irony, an earnest and universal
desperation that will momentarily dispel the haze of the characters\'
otherwise casual, dudely demeanor.
