^^
yeah... too bad Tribal Funk and See the Light have already been done, cuz those songs are awesome this year
-
the more i think about it i really hope they throw some heavy jams on this disc. why waste top-notch sound with short cuts that are mis-representing of their true strength? let it rip!
-
Will Frank Zappa be recording a studio journal?
Let\'s see those fantasy track listings for album 5.
-
What studio in VT?
-
Cool I hope Good Things is on there. Like a heady 7 minute cut of it.
RealRadio seemed under-jammed and too sterile considering the band behind the cover. Would be cool to see the next album take some real risks musically like they do on stage every night.
-
Did I mention that after the Coda gig we were going to Vermont to cut new album trax?.
Maybe I didn\'t..........
This is a start...we will be continuing to work down here, but we wanted to go cut some basic trax away from the phones, etc.
-
real excited to see them going into the studio with songs fresh out the gate.. their new songs are fantastic too. im very curious and eager to see the track list, hope they throw a couple oldies and some stretched out jams on Psygn, Honey Butter.. who knows, but i think its great news. cant wait, especially because real radio has never done it for me.
-
are they only spending sat>tues on this, or is its multiple sat>tues\'es? if they have the time, then i think its great that they haven\'t matured a whole lot (although an arguement can be made that this new batch matured pretty well rather quickly!) because that gives them more freedom to experiment with them in the studio. if its just the four day deal, then i definitely think they should go for a rawer, more live feel, giving listeners an idea of what to expect from the song live, but leaving them with the feeling that, while it rocks on the album, its gonna go a lot furthur live.
fwiw, i actually like some of the earlier versions of surreal radio more than some of the more recent. don\'t know what that\'s supposed to mean, maybe just that songs don\'t always need full maturation before being put on wax. or plastic these days.
-
most bands produce records then see where they go live. plus, you\'re much more receptive to a song the first time you hear it live if you\'re already familiar with the studio recording. for example, when they debuted fresh cut, i\'d already heard the studio recording an ass load of times so the song had already grown on me. i dunno maybe that comes from the fact that i\'ve spent a lot of my musical years not in a jam band setting, in more of a mainstream music business world. i think this is the right time to do the record. i think that bringing songs into the studio when they are really fresh allows them to be shaped easier and provides for a much better record.
i\'ll agree with that logic

I hated Future Peek when I first heard it. I was the one who stated it was, dare I say, Umphrey\'s? After hearing it in Boston, I loved it. I think this tune will be great in the Studio because of the way the music sounds layered.
Sometimes, some of these songs we hear as "meh" might work out better in the studio. ****, most of the main stream music is heard through an album before it is heard live. Also, this might get people out to shows to hear these songs that they heard of the album, of course, people will need to buy the album first.
-
^^who else is gonna do it.....
I\'LL FREAK\'N DO IT!!!!!!
Spacey and i have been all over flyers, tour posters promo and want not... give it to Spacey whatever. **** just needs to start getting done properly and promply, somone needs to light a fire under everyones ass to do everything they can even it\'s giving a couple flyers to friends posting on other boards or going to local big shows and handing out flyers and samplers, whatever but someone needs to be always on top of this ****.
i have mixed feels, i always hear people give a little meh on some first time played but after 3-4 live shots at it matures quit quickly and becomes the next great tune. but to put out and album with a bunch of never playeds is exciting and makes me want to buy it as soon as it\'s released. but it think the songs must change a bit once there played a couple times maybe not lyrically but emphasis and timing wise. it\'s a tough call.
Me!- that\'s us though, we see these guys just about every week it\'s easy for us to say we heard it 50 times, some folks have never even had to see the perform songs that are in the regular rotation
-
Room 430
-
A young band should put out an album every year or so. (easy for me to say)
out of sight=out of mind
As far as "maturing" the songs my first thought was that GD put out 3 of their best ablums : Live/Dead, Working Man\'s Dead and American Beauty within a 14 month time span. Many of their most well known classics are on these albums.
-
are they recording at Zack\'s Farm?
oh and BTW: I think as long as they put the work into it, even the songs that they\'ve never played live will still sound fuckin great, as long as the time goes into it.....
-
I like the idea of getting a new album. I also feel your concern Dave. These songs don\'t have much maturity on the live circuit but perhaps this can work in the bands favor. It would be cool if they went in there without expectations on where the song is suppose to feel and go out and really do what they feel the song is. Does that make sense? Maybe?
-
I can understand that, but it also gives people a reason to buy the album, songs we\'ve heard a million times we might not be as excited to hear as a brand new song.....
-
yep, new album is being recorded Sunday through Tuesday (i believe), in Vermont..
what do you guys think about this? they certainly have enough material for it (hopefully there will also be something we haven\'t heard yet, a la Fresh Cut), but my concern is that many of these songs are brand spankin\' new, and haven\'t matured enough yet to be put down on an album forever...
thoughts?

I\'m hoping that at least half of it is material no one knows about and no one\'s heard!!!
-
I would LOVE to see a produced/live album Europe \'72 style. -taking live tracks from several shows to create a Frankenstein monster of an album.
Hearing these guys in a studio session is like seeing a tiger in a cage. Sure, you get an idea of how powerful it is, but not quite the same **** your pants effect as if it were running around loose in your neighborhood.

jesus!! how could I forget honeybutter?
HONEY!
Butta butta butta butta butta!
MERGED!!! damn you davepeck/jimcobb! **violently shakes fist in air while cursing your name** ;)
-
honeybutter
-
I was thinking that myself but will they save the "buquebus saga" stuff for it\'s own "album"
-
eppy 3, overexposure
-
Ok so the guys have recently been busting out with an unprecidented amount of new material, which begs the question when do we get another album? I mentioned to Tim in Burlington this fact and he said soon. So what does everyone think will be/should be on the next album?
For me!?
#1: Good Things
Surreal Radio
Intension
Psygn (prob my favorite "new" tune)
Tricky Ways
Future Peek
and I\'m sure they\'ll record some things that they\'ve been playin forever but do not have album cuts of
I would love to hear studio versions of:
HLH
Sundance
Love Lake seems to have spawned a new life as well....
-
whilst somewhat still on this topic, if anyone hasn\'t already, do yourself a favor and listen to the Good Things from the Crystal Lake Show (3/23/06), a real heavy version- heavy as in its context: opened up, stripped down, raw, and bone chilling
:that:
-
i think obviously, in no particular order cuz i dont have the concentration to do something like that right now:
psygn
good things
intension
late/ exposure
honeybutter
surreal radio
and for old stuff i totally agree with hard luck harry and may fly.... and if dig isnt on an album (i dont think it is) then i totally want dig there too
.... and if i may add to the good things discussion, one of my most vivid breakfast memories is hearing good things for the first time this past halloween, having no idea what it was called or who it was by, and thinking that it maybe have been the best song i had ever heard performed live.... just my take:shrug:
-
Freedomtoire?

Ahhh who cares, it\'s a French word anyway so it\'ll be gone in the next stupid act of Congress? Freedomtoire?
-
Vera St. is also one of my favorite songs but as far as appeal to the general populous is concerned I think Good Things is, as I said before, more mainstream accessible!
Repotoire & Repitoire = Repertoire
-
1st half>trance, psychedelic session>Synth/guitar syncopated peak>fills>vocal reprise with all four voices doubled..
-
Absolutely, that song gets a lot less love than it deserves. One of my favs. The drum fills after the jam are incredible, I would love to see it make it\'s way into the studio.
-
Sun **** Dance
-
I know it is that\'s what I said... I said it sounds out of place "to me" in the repitoire. I think it\'s a good tune don\'t get me wrong, personally though I think the lyrics are a little awkward. Not that I could write anything better. It seems to me like there are too many of them for a slow tune, the song is slow but Tim has to sing the verses fast because of all the words. No problem, it\'s still not a bad song. But i guess we should probably stop hijacking the thread with this Vera St. Good Things discussion... Maybe another good tune to go on the album would be ___(fill in the blank)___
-
Vera ST. IS the Breakfast repotoire...
How can you NOT be moved by, "a pillow made from someone else\'s blood" !!!!!
-
Yeah I know, just breakin\' stones. Really, jazz = good, Kenny G = shitty. Somewhere something went horribly horribly wrong. I wish Kenny G would just take his circular breathing and go play the didgeridoo or something.
I think Vera St. is a pretty good song, not my fav or anything. I just hink that it kind of sounds out of place in the breakfast repitoire. But hey, I don\'t get to define who they are... they do.
-
mostly i just wanted to use the can of spray cheese line...
-
Pat Metheny would disagree with you Dyed Tied.....
-
can we just agree to disagree here? no one is gonna change anyone else\'s mind.
-
Vera St. is very jazzy, whereas Good Things is straight up rock ballad....
Not to be a jerk or anything but Kenny G is jazzy too. :D
-
Vera St. is very jazzy, whereas Good Things is straight up rock ballad....
I love jazz infused rock more than any other type of music.
I don\'t know, Vera St. puts the tears in my eyes, and Good Things closes them... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzA ;)
-
just like Za, shitty lyrics great music
Whoa, whoa, whoa. You\'re saying a song with lyrics referring to pizza a.k.a. ambrosia a.k.a. the food of the gods are shitty?!?!? Blasphemy!!! How dare you? BLOOD IS THE JUICE OF ZA!!!!!!!!!
A-PIZ-ZA, A-PIZZA
A-PIZ-ZA, A-PIZZA
A-PIZ-ZA, A-PIZZA
A-PIZ-ZA, A-PIZ-ZA
-
I\'ll take Vera St. anyday of the week.
over Good Things????
that\'s like passing up a bacon wrapped filet for a can of spray cheese, yo!
-
just like Za, shitty lyrics great music
-
Ok, so the lyrics are worth just as much as a 1986 bent Topps Ricky Henderson card, but the music itself needs to be revived!!!
-
Bring Back Kote!!!!!
confirmed never happen
-
Lyrically I identify with Psgyn and feel that it\'s a double edged sword. It could be recorded as a short 4 minute **** rock powerhouse or it could be a 20 minute psychedelic vortex. Tim\'s great at capturing psychological matrices lyrically, now his love lyrics on the other hand....... I\'ll take Vera St. anyday of the week.
-
a prelim. version was played at giavanna\'s. pretty sure with no lyrics. the lyrics were just recently finished up, again by Justin Maturo. also like the other EE, adrian wrote the music....
I was conscious (I think???)... It was/will be totally awesome (yes, I\'m a SoCal girl) when it\'s officially debuted.
Speaking of writing the music... I was going through cds/lyric sheets the other day and found most of the answers but, for newcomers, is there a place where the authors of words and music to the songs are listed?
GOOD THINGS = TICKET TO RADIO STARDOM!!!!!!!
This song, to me, is easily the most main stream accessible song they have right now, not to mention the fact that it\'s just a fantastic song!
-
niiice, leith you just made me wet.. ;) ;) ;)
niiice, leith you just made me wet.. ;) ;) ;)
:sarcasm:
-
The more people I talk to about Good Things the more it seems they have a sentimental connection to the song, whether it be memories of Timmy Tour or being part of The Breakfast fam. Maybe one of these days...
I\'m still keen on hearing Tres Eschers..... Was ANYONE at Giavanna\'s conscious for it\'s auspicious debut? Or did the band wait until everyone passed out ;)
Yeah If you actually listen to the words of Good Things it is a tearjerking romantic ballad.
It is an awesome example of Tim\'s continuing maturity in his songwriting. It also shows he realizes he cannot just play a million notes all the time,he needs to find that space between notes and he is doing so in baby steps.
As for EE3 Adrian mentioned to Tim he wanted to run through it. As the night went on I saw EE3 becoming just a faint hope. So when it became Gia\'s dad, Tim and Adrian jamming I mentioned it to Adrian and sure enough about a 1/2 hour later...
It is gonna be sick for sure!

-
the chase has the same feel as the new songs as well as lit. those are my choices. lit and the chase.
-
I think The Chase aka Count Funkula would be a perfect choice for the new album, with special raised levels on Ron\'s slapping during Jordan\'s solo.
-
i know Wake Up In A Coma was on Zone 1 and mokijam, but it\'s absolutely one of my favorite instrumentals from the boys. i never get sick of it.
-
i think they should throw an instrumental (or two?) on any new album coming out, like cut me some slack. and good things could be my favorite song ever
-
id like to hear all of the new tunes out of the studio.. as far as oldies that havent made the cut, my choice of 3: Mayfly, The Chase, Hard Luck Harry
-

really is to bad joe its a great song..
btw:thanks for the STS9 disc, haven\'t listened to it yet, but I\'ll let you know what I think
-
cute
-
Oh and Joe?
Good Things is one of those songs that no matter your opinion on it the greatness of the song shines through.
Hate on all you want but I tell you now that song will have you in tears one day.
It\'s made me cry alright......... tears of frusteration.
-
and leith, like it says, i was just daydreaming, realizing that they already have almost a full album of tunes without really trying.
When don\'t they though? ;) Daydream on and on.
-
no joe, i\'d prefer the opposite. acoustic guitar intro, tim alone on vox, full electric band dropping in for the second chorus. but that\'s just me.
and leith, like it says, i was just daydreaming, realizing that they already have almost a full album of tunes without really trying.

-
Wait, so Jason, you\'re telling me that you wouldn\'t want strings, a horn or two (in the classical sense), and thick vocals?
Leith, unless The Breakfast is going to pull an Umphrey\'s and record an album 2/3rds full of new material I doubt the Buquebus saga songs wouldn\'t be on it... Half of the songs are already on albums so why would it make a difference?
-
I fon\'t know it could just you some atmospheric (sp?) backround
-
Anyone wishing for an album right now is crazy.
The last thing these guys need to do is hole up in a studio again. Hell the band was pushing Real Radio on this past tour seeing as they NEVER introduced it to the West Coast.
Oh and most of the songs mentioned so far are Buquebus Saga songs and I doubt they would all be included in an album together. Just does not seem like the PB style.
That said on the next album when they do make it should def. have Intension, Good Things and Mayfly.
-
All I know is:
Eppy 3 10+ minutes
Late Great>Over Exposure +15 at least
Psygn 10 minutes
Intension +/- 8 minutes
Escher\'s Pt 3 TBD, but I\'m sure it will be beefy
Honeybutter 10 minutes.......
-
well, considering its not gotten nearly the amount of play time as any of the other new songs, the delivery will come with the practice. that being said, i don\'t actually think it needs much more work. and i\'m not really a big fan of previous "mellow" tunes due to them not having the power, just the sweetness. this is the first one that really grabs me as being a stand alone tune that doesn\'t need a jam to give it its value.
and it is *definitely* single material!
-
that was a joke, opinions arent right or wrong, they are opinions.
and i\'m sure they\'d put a little productions behind it. that song definitly calls for it.
-
^^that\'s exactly it, the room they would have to work with this tune in the studio is gonna be where this tune is REALLY gonna shine, and then it will be come a ser live tune, there is so much room for this song to grow
-
your opinion is wrong, sir.
Ok Hitler...
Yeah Mandler, I understand that a breather is needed. I guess if the song HAS to be on the album then I would like to see a musical makeover: add some strings, maybe a french horn and have Tim double over his vocals.
-
its not even all THAT simple, just lowkey.
edit: also, an album should show diversity.
-
I would love to hear an album that consisted of somethign liek Queeb Rufus Gladys Scheme but that\'s not gonna happen like a show you gotta have breather tunes in there. Of course musically it\'s no Scheme but it\'s powerful in it\'s simplicity
-
your opinion is wrong, sir.
-
Musically it\'s a black sheep in the batch of new tunes. Don\'t get me wrong I\'m a huge fan of mellow Breakfast (Vera, Love Lake), but Good Things seems laughable compared to the new stuff coming out. For instance compare the vocal delivery Tim gives in The Late and The Great to Good Things, now that\'s **** power!! I was streaming a recent show with Good Things on it and I was ALMOST won over because of the jam section, but I doubt a studio version would have an extended improvised ending. I\'d rather have an extended psychedelic 12 minute studio Intension than a 4 minute Good Things..
-
yeah a studio recording of good things is EXACTLY what a new album would need.
i smell single.
-
good things is the best tune of the lot in terms of power and maturity.
:that:
-
serious disagreement here, joe! good things is the best tune of the lot in terms of power and maturity. the main issue i imagine fokls have with it is that the vocal lines sound like a beatles tuen. i don\'t know why that would be a bad thing, but so be it. when it comes to the music, though, what song has that level of built in passion? eppy 3 should have it, but i still think that good things has it more.
-
your silly if you think Good Things isn\'t gonna be on the new album (whenever that does happen)
-
Take away Good Things, add Mayfly and two new tunes and you\'ll have epicness....
-
escher\'s part 3 was played in a late night keyboard jam session.

Okay, where the hell did Escher\'s Etchings pt. 3 come from. Is that farting synapses or do you know something we don\'t know?
I would throw Sundance or Hard Luck Harry (preferrably both) on there for another Jam sort of tune. Medium length: Language of the Gods or Love Lake. As for quickies, I would say Dig or Bugs. Or how about a Son of Simpleton with a structured Jam to start it or maybe a segue from Escher\'s Etchings pt. 3? :D
-
what other tunes havent been done in the studio?

i think may fly would benefit greatly from some good studio work..
especially with some harmonized ending triplets, ala phil\'s addition to the mayfly he played on!

that\'s a nice looking tracklist right there. i think may fly would benefit greatly from some good studio work.. gladys - eh, not so much.. the song itself is so short, it\'s really all about the jam, which is best explored in a live venue, imo. Gladys was actually recorded for the \'PB\' album and was scrapped (easy to see why when you listen to the outtake!).
