Title: Who do you listen to at a show?
Post by: Soulicious467 on January 09, 2006, 06:35:46 am
I start the  show watching Tim play but inevetably and at some point for some reason or another............my eyes find their way to Ron and once again, I\'m mesemerized until some other nasty **** goes down (could be Tim, Adrien or Jordan) and then I focus on them........I like to play games at the shows, like focusing intently on one guy for an undetermined amount of time, watching everything he does and plays, or trying to focus on them as an entire group and the entire sound they\'re putting out, or creeping up behind Adrian\'s set during a sick Puppetry jam and rattlin\' off a few, tasty, fresh ones on the snare before I dissappear back into the crowd (usually no one notices that), and well, ya know, fun stuff like that

Adrian\'s great, but I think as a whole the entire band brings each other to the next level... Adrian will throw down, but Timmy or Ronnie or Jordan will pick up on it and make it into something new & different & cohesive!  I don\'t think it\'s up to just one person in the band which makes this such an amazing band... I think it\'s the reactiveness between the members that makes it work so well.

Save Side... \'nuff said.

On second thought, not \'nuff said yet.

I voted Ron based on the fact that when I feel that the band is jamming together without a distinct instrument soloing, Ron is the person that dictates where the jam is headed.  He is also, in my humblest of opinions, the most improved since the time I started going to shows (April 2002).

It is hard to get around focusing on Tim whilst he is the one soloing, but he also does some interesting stuff when he is not soloing.  Jordan is the one that stands out when I am listening to nobody in particular (and that\'s a compliment).  He comes through as a force that sets a specific version of a certain song apart from every other version.  The keyboard work is, in my opinion, the most unique element of The Breakfast.  As far as Adrian goes, I find that I conciously appreciate what he does more on the recording than I do live.  Drum solos aside, what he is playing is just comes through as so natural, as exactly what should be happening at that moment in the music, that my mind doesn\'t even process it as something amazing without a few extra listens... maybe I should take Wah Wah\'s advice and start puffing before shows.

And now for the obligatory disclaimer... no disrespect is meant to Tim, Adrian, Ron, Jordan, Josh Dobson, the amazing whistling of Mr. Gencs, the manufacturers of any of the equipment they use, the owners, proprietors, architects, and carpenters affiliated with any of the venues where the Breakfast has played, or any of the opinions stated in this thread or at any other point in time in this arena or any other.  I know a li\'l bit about music, but I am completely ignorant to the mechanics of the guitar, bass, percussions, keys, organ, and any other little gadgets used by any of the band members... not to mention that I have no background in stage layout, sound engineering, or venue/stage design and construction.  It\'s the way I hear it live, in my car, or in my earphones (and each of these means of listening make their own differences, but that\'s another rant for another time).

All bullshit aside, I can\'t help but listen to whoever I\'m look at.  Maybe it\'s a coordination thing, but if I am watching Ron, there is no way that I can hear what Tim is doing.  Chalk it up to whatever, but I just can\'t do it.

Anyway, when a few "fans" start commenting that Jordan is a great player and "For those doubting how great he is" (direct quote from forum)  That aggravates me a little,

so wait, you get pissed when people say jordan is great and stick up for him?? :hscratch:

nikki = big italian weirdo.

Thanks Dave! As the person responsible for the "For those doubting how great he is" comment, you obviously did not get what I meant in the context of other comments already posted, which all praised Tim, Ron and Adrian, but few were quite as effusive in their praise of Jordan. As Dave said, I was sticking up for him and was willing to say I valued his contributions as much as anyone else\'s! I fail to see how that could aggravate anyone when someone is trying to redress the balance a little.

And as for suggesting by the use of your "" that I am not a true fan, just ask anyone who knows me who my favourite band is, the band I go on about all the time. Yes, I may not have seen them live yet, but no-one can doubt my dedication to the band, and I don\'t just mean downloaded shows; current merchandise runs to 3 albums (still trying to get the first one), three t-shirts (should be four, but my order from September still hasn\'t been processed!) and two posters, all of which I have had to get sent by Tim or members of this board.

If you meant  it annoyed you that there was not quite as much visible praise for jordan, fair enough. I realise you are close to the issue, but please take comments as they are meant.  :)

WHo is he brown nosing who here...

yeah you\'re right people are talking about the volume of instruments on this forum.  I think he needs to be turned up to, he thinks he needs to be louder too, but a keyboard sound is hard to overpower a bass, drum or guitar(but that is just my belief.  Maybe he needs the  "godzilla g2 4 squared h2 bombomic amp"

As for Jordan, check out the Baja Bash 04 discs- house pa guy mixed him much higher than usual and you can hear just how good a player he is.

Baja Bash \'04 disks are a prime example of Jordan\'s great work.  He makes their sound much richer, given you can hear him in the recordings.  He is the reason why that version of The Vermont Song sounds so great.

over the years it has definitely been timmy.  it\'s because of him and his unsane abilities on the axe that i fell in love with the band.  but i will also echo that in the past year, the past few months in particular, ronny has really been grabbing my attention.  and taking my attention away from timmy is QUITE a feat!!  i will also echo that ronny totally stole the show at uac 3.  i was fawning all over him after the show telling him i thought so and just how incredibly he threw down that night!

As a (pathetic) guitarist, it was aalways Tim\'s playing which I listened to most, especially as he was the reason I discovered the band. (Someone suggested I check out the biscuits, but I found Tim\'s name while googling for them, and now, guess who\'s most important!!)

However, Ron\'s bass playing has become more of a factor, especially over the last couple of years. Similarly, where would we be without Adrian, holding it all together and then adding his own special sound? As for Jordan, I would have thought he would have got higher praise, especially since the new toys he has introduced over the last year - Buquebus will never be the same again. For those doubting how great he is, check out the Baja Bash 04 discs- house pa guy mixed him much higher than usual and you can hear just how good a player he is.

BTW I took the wimps option when voting! :)

Tim
Ron
Adrian
Jordan

I love all of the guys, but being a stringed instrument player, I tend to focus more on the bass or guitar in any band.

At shows I try to listen to all.

The true answer is sometimes Jordan is much softer in the mix so I have to listen harder to hear what he is up to. A lot of times what he is doing with his rig is subtle but it is the kind of stuff that grabs your mind. It doesn\'t get lost which is a great thing but his vocals and rig need to be stronger in the mix IMHO.

It is to be expected when the others in the band are who they are!

I haven\'t exactly been getting to a lot of shows this year, but over time I have become more and more drawn to Ron\'s bass playing.  He has really become a very accomplished and entertaining player.  This band has one hell of a rhythm section now with Ronnie being as good as he is now.
Title: Who do you listen to at a show?
Post by: leith on December 23, 2005, 04:37:25 pm
Adrian\'s drum solos are nice and all but I really do not think they are a great example of his drumming. I think that comes when you listen to him direct the band via his drums. He can take a sick ass jam and twist it so all of a sudden it becomes the intro to a song and if the other guys are listening it happens. If not, well Adrian does one of 2 things, tries again or jumps on the most consistent theme and rides the hell out of it!

Tim is the most identifiable shredder in the cast.  I don\'t usually hear Jordon or Ron as much I wish I could.  I\'m with Jking and want Jordan turned up a notch.  I probably didn\'t notice how insane and versatile Adrian was until people pointed it out to me, though he\'s been doing drum solos to showcase his talent for as long as I\'ve been seeing these guys (6 years).

I find that Adrian is the key element in Breakfast shows I have attended this year. I do not really think people fully comprehend this man\'s ability. Tim is really easy to focus on but having ALOT of drummer friends, I find I focus on Adrian\'s playing and totally being amazed every time at the stuff he comes up with.
Adrian is like the best sports players in that he makes everyone around him that much better.

Its tough to get around Timmy.  But for the last year I\'ve focused on Ron.

I honestly have a lot of trouble hearing jordan at all.
