nowhere in this thread does anybody mention ron or gordon being the best. it\'s not a sport folks. let\'s just be thankful that we have so much good music to listen to.

that being said...roger waters is the best.

all of you folks insinuating that Gordon is the best bass player ever have obviously never listed to Dave Schools.

a few pithy points:
1. mike gordon puts to me sleep.
2. ron rules.
3. i agree w/ walsh: brownie\'s a super approachable/chill/generous guy.
4. i think tim\'s leadership role - while performing live - used to be much more evident. but over the years, the rest of the band has really stepped up and helped to balance out the music so it\'s more multi-dimensional.

I don\'t believe that tB is dominated by Timmy.  There is an equally powerful animal in that band.  A yoda like figure, that doesn\'t get up off his ass, except on occassion to show that he ain\'t no one trick wonder.

yeah i agree, and i thought about that heavily before posting, but for all intents and purposes, tim takes the leader role.  i guess you can say its coheaded by tim and adrian, if you wanna get technical.

That\'s a whole other thread. Rob is doing **** right now that is just plain SICK!

yeah it really is.  w/ the breakfast, timmy is the man, and the rest of the band follows suit perfectly, same thing w/  phish and trey, w/ moe. everything revolves around the bass, and he holds his own w/ the best of \'em.

I am the biggest Save fluffer in the world but to compare him to gordo isn\'t even fair.  Mike wasn\'t a "groove" bass player, christ, Trey even admitted getting him to "hold grooves" on songs like "Sand" and "Jibboo" was "wrong" on his part.  Again tB fans with the "Best Ever" sickness, just with different wording.

p.s. If you want a hypnotic, groove, inventive bass player...check out Brownie from the Biscuits.  I would love to hear a "Save the Brownie" side project...WOW!

The thing is the conversation was how far he has come in his playing AND can he surpass a certain other Bass player. We did not come to the conclusion that he has. YET.
We both agreed that his proficiency level has risen very fast and factoring in his unique style we began discussing the how far can he go aspect.
Never said he WAS better than Cactus.
His playing many notes (Jaco or not) is impressive in that he is not just playing them to play them but inventing **** w/ Adrian that if you listen carefully will knock your block off.

It\'s his 30+ jewish snowboarding gangster persona......  I think there\'s a certain decorum a musician should have, he doesn\'t have it. I mean, it\'s ok if you\'re a fluff act and have silly **** songs, but when you\'re trying to communicate semi-serious musical ideas, chanting "BECAUSE YOU\'RE ****", destorys everything that was built musically before it...... Just my .02

WOW.  I have always found Marc one of the most approachable members of the band.  I guess his wit can be a lil dry, but I have never had anything but the coolest of vibes from him while hanging, either way his bass playing is sick.

Brownie is an amazing bass player.I\'ve always admired his low end tone. However his ass hole personality elcipses his playing, turning off old school Bisco fans.

Ronnie is great, especially when I saw him at UAC. His Buquebus progressions were quite enjoyable. However unless you\'re Jaco a bass player shouldn\'t be trying to play as many notes as Tim Palmieri. That being said Gordon is one the most original, tasteful and technically proficient bass players in the history of music.

Ron is a great bass player. He has come such a far way. There is nothing like catching one of his grooves and wondering if it was even suppose to be there. I am amazed at how great of a bass player he has become in such a short time. He is one of the best bass players on the scene right now, who can hold a groove the way he does.

Start listening to Ron more. I mean really listen to him. I have been surprised how insanely good he has become on the Bass Guitar.
Talk about Original playing, and another thing Ed said" How many Bass players bother to invent while playing AND play as many notes as someone like Tim?

While listening to the middle of TFA 12/9 my buddy Ed says this:
"Sometimes they sound like Phish @ their best and then the other times they\'re like better than Phish and playing **** completely new.
Their dynamics are so different from Phish but they can play like Phish but Phish could not play like them."

OH and he is a HUGE fan of Ron. We even began to discuss how good Ron can become and if he will surpass a certain other Bass player in a now defunct band.

Anyway I thought his description was pretty cool for a casual fan of the band.
