any idea about the exact whereabouts of the mirrors when they were found the next day? I strolled into the lot at about 7 am and didn\'t see anything, but I didn\'t patrol the area. If it were on the backside of the building though,\'d have definitely seen something.
did you happen to go inside at that time to pick something up? i\'m just curious if the place was locked up at that point.
played phone tag with the dance instructor until last night. finally found out that the total damage is $1,700.
thanks for those of you who have already chipped in towards the cause. it is truly appreciated.

Terry I\'m so sorry to hear about this. Was hoping to come on here and hear positives regarding the night... I knew you would be out financially, and was prepared to make a donation, but I can\'t believe this happened. We are all so lucky to have beeen able to enjoy a night like that and it\'s infuriating that someone could take advantage like that. God I hope it was not anyone I know...

TerryOB, I believe has talked to the band and they do not know anything. That was my understanding from reading one of his post about said subject.

I haven\'t done it because I don\'t know any bandmembers personally. I just thought someone who is a personal friend of a bandmember could call and ask politely what transpired as they were leaving. I know I probably sound like an armchair QB, but I just don\'t know the guys well enough to call them. I meant no criticism or offense and I have no say over this matter; I was merely implying that a friend of the band could solve this matter quickly by making a phone call.

this whole thing stinks to high heaven. As long as the band can confirm that they locked up upon leaving then it should end Terrys responsibilities to UAC. If they can\'t confirm it, then they need to step up and accept fault and pay the piper.

Well said!!! But, keep in mind, the mirror that I found as the most expensive on that site was a triple pane folding set. Not sure how big the broken one is, but it did fit out a door.

Let me say that if I were an instructor of any sort that rents a hall and pays to keep my stuff there I would in addition ask for a padlock for the closet that my stuff is in (assuming its only my stuff in said closet). Halls like this, I am assuming, are rented out for all types of occasions (parties, stags, ziti dinners, etc.). Knowing that a place I am keeping my valuables in is rented out nearly every weekend an extra lock for my area seems logical to keep it safe from week to week seeing as there are many others who also use the location.
I don\'t know anything about dance mirrors but the size Todd found for $500 or so seems about right. I could be wrong but I think there were three in the closet? That\'s about $1700 for a new set, and she\'s asking $1400 for one, which is a good deal to pay $300 out of pocket for a new set. . .
The question of who was there last is a key one, and did they definitely lock up. My assumption is that yes, they did lock up. While I don\'t think the dance lady "hired" someone to go in, I think she could have very well done it herself, assuming she has her own key to the hall. People picked up there cars the next morning and didn\'t notice anything. Not sure of the age of this lady, but it is unusual for alot of people to sleep past 8am even on the weekends. I think Igz said he picked his car up at 7. Maybe she is a church goer to 9am mass and went by at 8ish. Terry also said that it is claimed that the lights were left on, doors unlocked, and some trash and whatnot, even though he wasn\'t the last one at UAC he did say that the area in question was swept and cleaned before he left. Even if a few people and the band did stay later and partied some more, I find it hard to beleive that they would have made a mess doing so. Just an opinion from someone who wasn\'t there.
Drunken fools or dance lady trying to get some new gear; either way its a shitty situation that needs to be cleared up before Terry hand out any cash for the busted mirror.

It certainly sounds like no one locked up and turned off the lights etc. It is not far fetched to imagine the band finishing their packing and not wanting to go through the hassle of kicking out the last stragglers. Some drunk promises to close the door behind them and the band leaves thinking that things are taken care of. After another hour/beer/joint someone gets the great idea to go sledding on the mirrors and the rest is history.
i am sure the sledding thing was exactly what happened. thats a very logical explaination for it.
but i dont know if the band would let people continue to party after they left. maybe a door was left unlocked by accident, or someone was still inside after locking up. then they opened the door and drunk kids came back in.

Am I the only one who thinks it sounds like people might be trying to cover for someone?
I think it\'s equally if not more conceivable that the dance lady sent someone in to break the mirror so she could try to extort money out of Terry. It almost worked too. I bet she\'s got a closet full of those mirrors at home but needed some quick dough and waited until there was an event at the UAC to have someone break the mirror.
Nobody seems to have broken into the place, which means either that someone stayed after the show OR the place was locked and empty and someone who could let themselves in... let themselves in.
Very fishy also that she never filed a police report, but rather immediately started screaming at Terry and the UAC guy to throw money at her. Why is she 100% concerned about getting money in her pocket and 0% conerned about finding out how it happened and bringing the people who did it to justice? Sounds like a big extortion racket to me.
It\'s also equally conceivable that someone broke it by accident when moving things around the closet and threw it outside, figuring it wouldn\'t turn into such a big deal.

Bottom line is we need to know who was there last. I can\'t get an answer out of the band or any of the fans as to who were the last people in the UAC. There were a good 20-30 people still there when I hit the road.
I did ask the band to "do a once over before they left" and they agreed. However, in the end, I\'m still responsible for the UAC even though I had left.
Apparently when the first person got the UAC in the morning the doors were unlocked and open and the lights were still on. So it could be that the band left while there were still people partying there and nobody ever locked the place up. And those people might have trashed the mirrors.
I am at as much of a loss as the rest of you. I can\'t seem to get any answers out of anyone.

I guess a better question for TerryOB would be, what is the rental agreement between UAC and himself. If he didn\'t have a written contract/reciept.agreement then a lot of this is going to be difficult for it to be decided outside of court or an arbitraitor.

Who says the mirrors where broken at night? There were a few people who got there cars the next day and didn\'t see no broken glass nor did they investigate the area either.
Drunkards are most likely but there is a huge grey area in this entire situation that we all continue to speculate on. We do need facts and that is all we can work with.
We know that the band were the last people to leave and that mirrors were broken sometime between when they left and when the dance lady arrived. Are there any other facts?

The 1 post I may have failed to see in this thread is that we know the band was supposed to lock up did they ? who was with them ? what time did they leave ? I haven\'t seen 1 post by anyone claiming to be the last ones out saying we locked up the place was sealed etc.

Waiting for a moment when a younger crowd would rent a hall and then sneaking back in the wee hours to smash 1 mirror not all of them for the purpose of getting new mirrors sounds a little farfetched to me.
Drunken tomfoolery seems to be the leading motive here IMHO

The worst that could possibly come of it is that the court makes you pay for new mirrors, which you were about to sign yourself up for anyhow just because she told you to.

I would threaten her with going to court. After I found out how much the mirrors were. Another good point is, when did Terry\'s responsiblity for the building end. The fact that she did not call the police is evidence enough that she did not feel that the police needed to be involved. The bottom line is this, the courts and out judicial system look at what transpired after the incident. If no police were called, why? This will weigh heavily on the mind of a judge. Usually when someone has something vandalized right away they should get the police involved. This makes a record of the incident.
I don\'t know what to think about this entire situation besides 1) the mirrors seem to expensive 2) no way did someone at this party break anything (I was pissed when all the technical malfunctions happen but didn\'t want to break anything) 3) No witnesses

Don\'t pay her Terry. For $1,500 I would definitely go to court and make her prove that you are legally liable for the mirrors, which will be difficult. I\'m no lawyer, but I get the sense that it may be impossible to prove the mirrors were broken during the time period in which you were responsible for the building. She may not even bother going to court and will just try to work something out with you on the side. Tell her she\'s gonna have to take it to court and there\'s a good chance she\'ll never bother. The lack of police reports will totally work against her as the plaintiff. I don\'t know much, but I feel like the odds are against her bothering to go to court, and if she really did the odds are even further against her winning. You\'ve got outs here Terry. The worst that could possibly come of it is that the court makes you pay for new mirrors, which you were about to sign yourself up for anyhow just because she told you to.
Can I call the biggest shennanigans of all time and say that it was in fact the dance lady who did it? She waited until there was a night event at the UAC, then sent someone to break the mirrors so she could get new ones. (And tried to extort way too much money for their replacement out of the liable parties.) Just a thought.

yeah, i am going to hold out on paying for now. i just went down there but she wasn\'t there. i had to write a check to Paul because after the second UAC show he said we were "good people" and let me slide on giving a deposit since he trusted us.
but now that all this went down he had to cover his tracks. so i wrote him a check for $300 so he wouldn\'t get in trouble.
i\'m going to ask for the damaged mirrors. then i\'m going to shop around for replacements. then if it costs a lot less than what she claims then i might ask them to speak to an attorney. but we\'ll see...

How big was this mirror? Gohere (http://www.en-pointe.com/mirrors.html) and check out their prices. The most expensive thing they have, a 3 Panel Screen Mirror 24" x 72" (each panel) goes for only $577.

ok, just talked to Paul. apparently the lady flipped out and went off on him earlier today. she cancelled her classes for the rest of the week and is refusing to pay rent to Paul until these things are replaced.
he said I\'m looking at a minimum of $1,400 for the mirrors. that doesn\'t include tax and shipping so i don\'t have a final total yet.
also there might have been more things damaged in her closet. she\'s taking inventory right now.
i\'m writing her a check tonight. i haven\'t spoken with her yet but Paul asked if i\'d personally apologize to her for our actions.
this sucks. i feel like such a heel having to tell this old lady i\'m sorry for breaking her mirrors. not to mention i\'m out a grand and a half.

i thought about that but if the police are called, it will bring attention to a few things:
1) we weren\'t supposed to be technically having a party with "strangers" showing up. it was supposed to be a party i was having with some friends. so if they asked for a guestlist i\'d have a lot of explaining to do.
2) the band would most likely be questioned by the police. i\'m sure they don\'t want their name attached to this incident in a police report. and let\'s face it. who wants to be interrogated by the popo?
3) the police would keep a closer eye on the club in the future and since there is only one road in and out of there then i\'m sure those guys who hang out in the bar downstairs drinking and watching sports every night don\'t want to deal with the fuzz circling their parking lot.
4) if we ever decide to have another event like this in Fairfield then you can bet that it won\'t be an easy drive home. cops have nothing better to do in this town than hassle high school kids and i\'d like to keep it that way.
but that\'s not to say it wasn\'t a good suggestion. it did cross my mind.

No, it happened after the show. Freddie and i saw the mirrors in the closet before the show and they were still intact.

I don\'t know if all the doors were locked. I was gone. It was supposed to be locked. I cleaned up the bar area and locked that door.
The first person who came into UAC on Sunday morning said that there were doors open and all the lights were still on. He also said that there was garbage on the floor and tables in the bar area which is weird since we made sure to clean and sweep that area before we left.

id imagine itd be alot easier to take em right through the front door...
i think any of the four doors, the one by the bar, one by the deck in front, the one behind the stage and the one to the side of the stage would be just as easy as any of the others.

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate event. Terry puts a lot of effort into these nights and it sucks that this happened. I have not been able to attend a UAC show yet and now it looks like I might never get the chance. Dragging large mirrors outside into the snow sounds more like an act of drunken tomfoolery than an act of deliberate vandalism. Either way, not cool.

any idea about the exact whereabouts of the mirrors when they were found the next day? I strolled into the lot at about 7 am and didn\'t see anything, but I didn\'t patrol the area. If it were on the backside of the building though,\'d have definitely seen something.

i can tell you that the closets are on both sides of the stage.
they were both unlocked.

who was there when that lady said that ? If I were a detective thats where I would start. It would have been folks who had prior knowledge that there was a closet and that there was stuff in it.

I mean if it was someone breaking in after the party was over then why wouldnt they take something of valkue or booze or whatever. Instead someone is going to spend time and effort to get what is being described as large objects moved out in to the cold (in plain view of the off ramp that was mentioned)

the closets werent locked because me and terry went in them looking for a handtruck to load in the kegs..
either way,that dosent give anyone there any excuse to go in there for anything..

Yeah, it seems to me like some totally unrelated people broke in after everyone else was gone. Melanie said that it was down to her, Matt, and the band at 2:15 and still nothing had happened. If the people who did it broke into the closet, then they were capable of breaking into the building. Either that or they just hid somewhere in the building after the show until everyone else had left, which seems less likely. There\'s a very good chance that this happened early Sunday after everyone from the show had left. It just happened to come a few hours after a Breakfast show but had nothing to do with it. If the place was locked, Terry shouldn\'t even be responsible. This sucks.

I\'m 99.9% sure it wasn\'t the locals. That room is normally used for club events. It was unusual for them to rent it out to a non-member. So it\'s not like there is a different band playing there every week and some people might have just shown up latenight to see what was going on there.
And that parking lot is not somewhere that local kids would hang out. It\'s a private dead end street that is visible from the entrance to the highway. So you\'d be asking for trouble if you were there without permission.
I grew up in Fairfield and know the places high school kids go on the weekends. The UAC is not one of them.

while the vast majority of breakfast fans I have met are all good people, there have always been a few scumbags as well. it sucks that people have to act this way... drunk or not, there is no excuse for this behavior.

At the first UAC show about a year ago, I had a bunch of friends in from out of town that were staying at my house. After the show was over, we were all dying to get out of there so we could go party at my place but we had to wait two hours for the band to pack up.
Then after the second UAC show, we cleaned up everything in the hall and we were stuck waiting again. I talked to the band and said I could either stand there tapping my foot and looking at my watch and asking them to hurry up every two minutes or they could turn off the lights and lock up after they were done loading out. They agreed the latter would work better for everyone so that\'s what we did and everything was fine the next day.
So on Saturday night I figured we\'d do the same thing. When I was leaving I asked the band to do a once over before they left and they said ok.
Yesterday around noon, I was asleep but I got a voicemail from Paul who is my contact at the UAC. He is normally a very relaxed peaceful guy but he was yelling for a few minutes straight about what went down the night before.
By the time I woke up and turned on my phone it was around 4pm and I had another voicemail from him saying he went down to see it himself and was cleaning up the scene. So I went down to check it out and help him clean up.
Apparently some moron decided to break into the closet and take the mirrors that are used for dance classes there outside. They dragged them all out into the snow and left them there this morning. This was no accident. I looked at what they would have had to go through to get them outside and it was no easy process so I\'m guessing it was more than one person.
The mirrors are worth thousands of dollars altogether. Only one of them was broken, but others were damaged in the snow. Hopefully I\'ll only have to replace the one.
I was going to make a post about this last night but I was so livid that I held off until I calmed down a bit. And I was also hoping that someone was just wasted when they did this and would come forward after they sobered up and offer to reimburse me for the damages.
Needless to say, this was NOT what I wanted to have to deal with when I woke up hungover. I was ashamed and embarrassed to be the one who was held responsible for this juvenille bullshit when I had to go down there last night and be held accountable for the damages.
Paul told me that he had no idea how much a new mirror will cost. And I don\'t know either. But they can\'t be cheap. I\'m sure I\'ll find out soon enough.
He said that the lady who teaches dance gets upset about little things like chairs being left out in her way in the closet and is kind of anal about her stuff being left alone. So now Paul is going to catch heat from her which is just not acceptable. She also pays lots of money to him to have her classes there and keep her belongings in his closet so he\'s worried she might decide to have them somewhere else from now on after SAT.
Anyways, I don\'t want to go off on a rant. But I\'m still in shock about this whole situation.
The thing is...it wouldn\'t be such a big deal if it was a broken window or a busted table or something. I know people get drunk at parties and accidents happen. But this was different. Someone went out of their way to do this. And that\'s what really bothers me.
I walked out of the show on SAT thinking that I was down a few hundred bucks but I didn\'t really care. I figured everyone had fun and that\'s what matters. And I thought maybe I\'d throw another UAC show six months from now once I\'d saved up a bit. Even if I ended up paying more than everyone else for these shows at least we always have a great night in a cozy venue.
But now that is obviously no longer a possibility. We burned our bridges at the UAC. That\'s probably what bums me out the most.

This is a tough one to hear about... I wouldnt blame this on locals yet either.. Im as local as it gets and I didnt recognize many I would call \'locals\'....
I just want to say thanks to Terry. Really sucks what happened.. When your on the side of good or love... the other side , the oppressor the liar the evil do-ers allways seem to have the last word. But good will allways win and overcome as tough as it may seem. We all are thankfull for the shows you produced and the good times they bring..
Terry-when the smoke clears , I have an idea for an outdoor venue on the water and maybee you would consider taking a partner to help make things easier ..

When I left, Terry was actually dippin into his own stash of beer to cover cause the kegs were done. He put this thing together, dealt with all the headachews, and now this?! not cool.
\'Give Us the Money Lebowski\' is playing near there next week, so Im thinking some of the same people will come out, so maybe we can do some kind of fundraising to help out.. maybe a 50/50 or raffle off something like concert tix? maybe tix to a breakfast show coming up? any ideas?

^^i\'m with ya. very few people have the motivation/ability to put shows like uac on and i think it\'s awesome that terry would do it. i have been to all three and have always had a great time. there is no question that i want to throw down some $$ to try and help out in any way. at the same time, i really want to know who is responsible for the damage so that proper action can take place and they fork up the cash/deal with the consequences.

Definitely a collection is in order. Terry can not and should not be left holding the bag on this one. Is this his payback for being a great guy, putting it on the line, and busting his ass so we can all have a good time? I think not.

i don\'t understand, i didn\'t see ANYONE there the entire night who was acting the least bit sketch. everyone was having a great time and enjoying themselves it seemed to me.
i hung out for awhile after the show, talking to people and trying to sober up and whatnot. when i left, the only folks i recall being there were the band and family and friends.
i just don\'t understand how this could have happened. it makes me so upset that the experience that is the breakfast @ uac is now tainted. thanks a ton to whoever did this.
and i am also all for a collection to cover the cost for terry, although i\'m not sure i\'ll be able to contribute until after the holidays (this is going to be a rough month financially).
