Title: David Lindley
Post by: wstielau on November 07, 2005, 10:14:44 pm
I recall seeing David Lindley with ElRayo-X at Irvine Meadows sometime back in the 80\'s. They opened for Jackson Browne and I believe he also played with Jackson Browne\'s band that night. The only specific tune I remember was Mercury Blues although I do recall I liked ElRayo-X much more than Jackson Browne.

Who did your father play with in the 60\'s in Eastern CT? I was in high school in CT (Old Saybrook and Pomfret) from 1969-1973 and saw quite a few local bands.

Try and find some of Lindley\'s recordings with Ry Cooder - I have a boot somewhere - great player.

But I can\'t believe no-one has mentioned the best band he was ever in - Kaleidoscope with Chris Darrow et al - psychedelic folk with a heavy Eastern influence. Check out this site: http://www.pulsatingdream.com (named after a Kaleidoscope track) - also includes interviews with Lindley on the Archives page. The Links page also has much that should interest you/your dad.

well my old amn never saw the dead nor cared to but my uncle who took him was an old dead head from way backwhen.  So that\'s prob where he heard of him, still good though leith?  what\'s his style?

Well El Rayo X was pretty much straight rock and roll, but David plays all sorts of stuff. Mainly a plucking Guitarist from what I have seen. Really good actually. I can understand why your Dad was impressed.

I saw David Lindley back in the day opening up for GD @ Laguna Seca. The bass player in that band El Rayo X works in Orange County doing Production and I worked w/ him this summer. David Lindley was good but compared to Jerry I would say he was not the best guitar player on that stage that day.

oh he never played around atleast not since, oh atleast the 60\'s or so and that would have been eastern CT and tiny little bars and what not, then he decided to becom ea teacher and all that went out the window.  I\'m sure someone will call shenanigans on this one but Peter Frampton actually saw my dad play and offered hima job to go on tour w/ him but my dad turned him down

David Lindley was for years Jackson Browne\'s sidekick guitarist, best known for playing screaming lap steel.  but he also has played with a who\'s who of great artists over the years as a session sideman.  A much less technical guitarist than tim, Lindley has a huge tone and great tyaste as a player.   He can jam though.

As a band leader his biggest record was El Rayo X, of the famous Asylum records....home to so many great 70\'s West coast artists.

For further info check Allmusic.com.

Who is your dad...I might know him if he played around.

My dad went to see him while I was @ drums & guitar, (he was playing in Pawling NY)

My dad said he was prob the best guitarist he\'s ever seen (although he\'s never seen Tim ;) ) and I always thought my dad was the greatest guitar player I\'d ever seen until I saw tim.  basically I\'m saying he knows what he\'s talking about.

My Point:  Has anyone else ever heard of him?  The short track my dad played for me sounded really good, but has anyone heard anything else about him?
