umphreys covers that song where the drummer sings and its actually pretty impressive.
i heard an old phil collins song the other day that TB would fuckin tear up, im gonna go look it up real quick and get right back.
shouldve said Genesis. but its "Land Of Confusion" adrian would tear it a new ass. cool song overall.
-
Has anybody heard this one? ...cause I would really like to see it again... and it\'s the hottest effin cover tune I have ever heard.
It was at the Electric Co. while the band was doing a sound check, last year, I can\'t remember which show. However it was, to this day, one of the most ROCKING songs I\'ve ever heard...
Hot For Teacher by VanHalen (the good VanHalen)
The drums, the guitar hero antics. It was stellar

^^Wait Phish has played it ..........No way then.....
Packard Goose done!
February 15th, 2003 - Pearl Street; Northampton, MA
I: Puppetry, Hard Luck Harry > The Vermont Song, Good Times Bad Times > Frankly Po Zest > Beef Barley > Frankly Po Zest, Great Big Fiery Ball In The Sky > Score
E: Packard Goose*, LDZ > Lit, Rockin\' In The Free World
* Frank Zappa cover; first time played.

Dear Breakfast,
Please play Life On Mars? it would be a great cover for you. it\'s a little tough vocally but overall i can really hear you doing this masterpiece some justice. it is my favorite Bowie song and absolutely went nuts when hearing Phish do it. back in \'95, \'96 they would play this with so much passion and emotion. over the years it started losing it\'s energy but i feel you can pick up where they left off. thanks.
ps. and if you\'re going to cover zappa, do Packard Goose!!! Tim, get your sister to come do the "Music is the best" part. that would be epic.

I think this is every Phish tune I would like to hear them play. Especially a DWD. Weigh would be classic. The Wedge would bring a tear to my eye.

Oh ya, Drop that f\'n message in a bottle. This cover acually makes the people in the front row retreat for a smoke(BAD)

Damn - that great s show and we can\'t get to hear it!! (Yet?? I live in hope.) I wonder how many other shows there are out there. Still I can\'t complain - lost count of the pb/b\'fast/timmy shows I have thanks to the generosity of the guys here.
-
All of my OBM memories include a certain Devo.
Not me, my 2 favorite memories were 1/6/01 @ short beach set 2:
II: Maggot Brain > Love Lake, Buquebus > Mystery Roach > One Big Mob Jam > Split Open and Melt Jam > Puppetry > Echidna\'s Arf** > Puppetry, Uncle Freddy > Attraction to Shade Ditty
and
2/8/01 @ tammany where tim came running up to dave between sets to go over what ther lyrics were because he couldn\'t remember them all (ok, that kind of includes dave)
I hype this show up because there is something special I feel when it is played (in its entirety) that can\'t be replicated in other recordings. Besides, I\'m one of the very few who has the show so no one else has any clue what went down (unless you were there and remember a show from 5 years ago).
I remeber it, I remeber pretty much all the shows I\'ve been to. I rember I was taping it and someone turned off my equipment and i noticed it during some new cover, and then they had to stop down and start over again the song and I still missed the begining, which was phone book. I don\'t know whatever happened to that tape. It was a line out of whomever was recording to my tape deck.
Ahh magic.
damn straight brother.

I\'m more concerned about all the great covers that they no longer play.
Great point Al. There are definitely far more great covers that went by the wayside than covers currently in rotation that need to be dropped.
Covers that would be great if they were brought back:
Miles Beyond (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
King Kong (Zappa)
Legend Of A Mind (I don\'t know)
Sex Machine (James Brown)
Mommy What\'s A Funkadelic (Funkadelic)
Help On The Way > Slipknot (Grateful Dead)
One Big Mob (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Eat That Phonebook Coda (Gong) or whatever the heck the real name of this song is.
I would guess that One Big Mob assumes Dave Peck is on vocals.
no, they\'ve done OBM a lot..
All of my OBM memories include a certain Devo.
Yes to al\'s idea - bring back the Eat That Phonebook Coda!!
Hey, that was my idea! :P
Can you believe they debuted that song AND Stash in the SAME night? 11/17/00 Butterfield; Al\'s favorite show.
Am I the only one who has that show on tape (via Mike Bonanno)? Actually, I think I made copies for Jocelyn back when I first met her.
As for that Butterfield show, could someone hook me up with it along with other crucial formative shows? I have the UMass February gig - strangely enough from al - but there are too few of these critical shows up on the archive. Like many others not there at the beginning, it would be cool to hear these shows.
If someone can help, send me a pm - I have a pretty big list of stuff you could choose from in return.
I\'d ship a copy of the Butterfield 11-17-00 tapes to Caerleon, though they sit idle in my parents home 3,000 miles away. I need to remind myself to track down the guy (Mike Bonanno) who taped them to mini-disk. I hype this show up because there is something special I feel when it is played (in its entirety) that can\'t be replicated in other recordings. Besides, I\'m one of the very few who has the show so no one else has any clue what went down (unless you were there and remember a show from 5 years ago).

I\'d like to hear a 2001 sandwich or sandwiched in some certain tunes but to talk about it openly on this board would just be too dirty of talk for me.
-
i think they rock the **** out of 2001, i\'d never want to see that tune shelved.
Agree. Especially appropriate for certain occasions. The last one played at Porters was out of this world!
-
could be expect any covers for tonite at beardslee?
-
b-fast should cover: Kenny Rogers ?the gambler"
that would be sweet.

have to agree with message in a bottle out with that one!
with all the scarlet talk I know they have been playing it for ever but I have to say I love to hear it, the part i love is when it gets to the jam and they speed the tempo up like twice the speed. i just would not want to hear the song all the time.

What can I say, I\'m nostalgic for the era when the band was playing new covers every week (even if that was a response to having fewer songs than what comprises the current catalogue).
Look back at setlists from 1998-2001 and observe the abundance of covers that PB experimented with.
-
Fellas, last time I checked, this was the "drop" list. So lets stay on point. Jeesh! Can we start beating Message In A Bottle back into the ground?!! I think I just saw Sting\'s hand quiver.
Seems like people like the covers...
-
i think they rock the **** out of 2001, i\'d never want to see that tune shelved.
Most people would agree with ya Jim. IMO

Drew. IMO shakedown street and Tom Sawyer should not be on your list because
1.Tom Sawyer is a good tune and Ron sings and they play it well
2.They hardly ever play Tom Sawyer anyway(that i\'ve heard)
3.Shakedown Street is a good crowd pleaser(IMO)
4. I like Shakedown Street and Its a song alot of people know.
5. A cover ,I think should be a song people can sing along to with the band......:boat:
The Breakfast doing the Grateful Dead is a bit too empty sounding. Most Dead songs, as much as we all love them, don\'t fit the feel of a Breakfast show.
Good point but I think that Shakedown Street is the up beat cover they sometimes need to feel out a newer crowd......Get them up and movin

In defense... respectfully
I\'m not a big fan of "Tom Sawyer". I also don\'t like covers that are, for the most part, "note-for-note" (Exception: Karn Evil 9). To me, the song doesn\'t feel like their own when they play it. Also, I heard it a lot in its first year or so as a cover. Didn\'t notice that it hasn\'t been played a lot recently, but you\'re right.
Similarly, if you check out my list, every Dead tune on my "in rotation" list is included except for "The Other One" and "Help on the Way > Slipknot!". Consequently, every other Dead cover NOT in rotation should stay there, except for Terrapin Station just once when nobody is expecting it. The Breakfast doing the Grateful Dead is a bit too empty sounding. Most Dead songs, as much as we all love them, don\'t fit the feel of a Breakfast show.

Acid Queen by The Who. I think it\'s the vocals that just make me cringe.
-
Born To Be Wild, Rockin\' In The Free World, Jumpin\' Jack Flash, Tom Sawyer should be shelved. never understood peoples\' love for Tom Sawyer, that song annoys the hell outta me.
btw, i always enjoy MIAB.
-
My picks to be shelved are:
Born to Be Wild
2001
China Cat Sunflower
Jumpin\' Jack Flash
Man in Me, The
Message in a Bottle
Scarlet Begonias
Shakedown Street
Tom Sawyer
How did you figure these were "in rotation"? How long of a period did you use? In rotation this year? This fall, summer?
I used nothing specific, actually. Just cruised my master covers list with the criteria "what wouldn\'t be considered a bust-out if played this week". There\'s a few that are debatable as far as being in rotation. "Octopus\'s Garden" and "Soul Finger" are probably shelved... but that\'s probably a good thing anyway.

march toads.
and march lions den too i think.
-
Crosstown at Toads was awesome.
Score>Crosstown>Score hooked me that night.
-
Crosstown Traffic should played again sometime, the July Toads was epic!
-
Definitely more Moody Blues needed - bring back Legend of A Mind.
Oh yeah, and keep Karn evil in rotation too.
-
The problem with Frankenstein is that there are always going to be people who whine saying "That\'s Phish\'s cover, why don\'t you come up with your own covers to play."
-
Bring back Frankenstein
agreed.
this song can surely showcase all the bands talents
A good halloween song, hint, hint.
-
Bring back Frankenstein

keep on rockin in the free world needs to be put on the shelf ASAP.
any mahavishnu would be sick, i think they should play awakening. quick but jaw dropping tune off of inner mounting flame.
-
Bring back Frankenstein
Ditch the cops
-
It\'s all about Thumpasaurus!!! I LOVE this fuckin tune listen to Bill\'s bar 2/26/04
or anywhere else you ever see this tune on a setlist
-
Jumpin\' Jack Flash, I always thought this was too \'bar-band\' for these guys.
I hear ya, and I\'d put Born To Be Wild in the same category. Too many token bar cover bands playing this stuff; bands whose members couldn\'t combine to name 3 Zappa songs. I think a good jamband cover should be one of 3 things:
1. Jaw-dropping. "I can\'t believe they have the balls to play this." Examples: Any Zappa, Miles Beyond
2. Classic jamband songs. Songs that everyone at your show knows but don\'t run the risk of being called out as mainstream or bar-bandish. Examples: Help > Slip, YEM, Whiskey in the Jar, Beatles and Zeppelin tunes that weren\'t huge hits
3. "Sweet." Great tunes that are rarely to never covered and get the show moving. May or may not be difficult and may or may not be popular. Examples: Karn Evil, most Chili Peppers tunes, Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples
-
yeah, bring back King Kong!!!!!!
-
Tom Sawyer
Gotta keep this strictly for Adrian I love the drum fills on here.
Jumpin\' Jack Flash, I always thought this was too \'bar-band\' for these guys. I wasn\'t too fond of Band on the Run either.
Jumpin Jack Flash yes. Only redeming quality is it makes me think of Fear and Loathing.
Band On the Run hell no! Listen to the Acoustic Cafe version and the last Porter\'s version and rethink this one.
regarding LA woman, porter\'s encore at closing show ?!!?! wtf? :sigh: not what i would have picked if i had it my way.
.confirmed
And yes def loose Message

Band on the run is awesome!!!
not too big of them covering born to be wild or lady modana (i\'ve never heard it, but it doesn\'t sound like a song they should be covering).
Play Karn Evil more

Scarlet
Shakedown
Tom Sawyer

drop message for sure.
I am not one for covers unless they are properly placed in a setlist. More originals, less covers.
-
Mib = Out
-
i hate doors covers.
I have to admit LA Woman is not one of my favourites, but Peace Frog is always one of those tracks I look forward to hearing, and what about that Morrison Hotel???
I for one, agree with Message being dropped - never really liked it.
-
I\'m more concerned about all the great covers that they no longer play.
-
I gotta :gasp: agree w/ the Scarlet Begonias. Actually I think they should only cover it w/ a guest player. Timmy is good but even he can not save that song when they play it. ALWAYS sounds too thin.
-
tom sawyer
-
ok out of all of those, i think that message in a bottle should definitely be bagged before the rest are.
i personally like the shakedown st. cover
regarding LA woman, porter\'s encore at closing show ?!!?! wtf? :sigh: not what i would have picked if i had it my way.

I don\'t know...I think covers are pretty cool, they put their own vibe on it that makes it theirs you know. It\'s not the focus of their music. so whatever.
and you are?????
I already answered that in : The Chase, see Friday, 11/18/05 thread...

message in a bottle,definately

at least for a decent while:
Good Times Bad Times
LA Woman
Message in a Bottle
Scarlet Begonias and/or Shakedown Street
