Did you choose The Clubhouse over Breakfast ;) ?
Hey, Clubhouse is Thursdays.  Get it right or you get threatening voicemails.

The actual choice I made was whether or not I wanted to drive both ways solo.  No gas, no money, and a bunch of upcoming family birthdays (plus Christmas) made that choice easier.

Ended up not going.  Feels like a good decision right now, but I\'m sure once the setlist is posted I\'ll be "Are you SERing?" myself as I cry into my pillow.

15>691>84 to exit 11 is definitely the most time efficient.  Most of the back roads don\'t cut the way you need them to.  You\'ll be through Waterbury on 84 by the time you could get to beacon Falls on 42.
Sometimes getting through Waterbury is just plain ugly.  I got caught there once for 2 years, but that\'s a different story.

Some people just don\'t like driving the highways.

I know directions say 84 but I think I can make a direct route across the state in less time. If I don\'t make it tonight, it is because I got lost. But, really me lost?

Title: The Scene....
Post by: OrganicNugz on November 16, 2005, 06:36:53 pm
OK...this is Bill, from PKN; as I put this together let me give you my take:

1. The concept.
a.I hemmed and hawed about selecting this venue; but it\'s hard to have a place to do a show that works for this type of event. Reason I chose it was it\'s a nice theatre that was reasonable on rent and was available.
b. Most halls that serve alcohol won\'t do a benefit like this.
c. WPKN is a station that has some reach (more watts than your avg. college station) that remains an outlet for artists. It\'s not a corporate entity that only plays 30 songs a day of major recording artists. It\'s a unique entity that is open to the community, has earned some respect over its 30+ year existence and has been 100% listener supported for the past 15+ years with no govt., corporate, or any money with strings attached. That said I am completely about giving new artists air-time and exposure to audiences they may not normally reach, bands like The Cosmic Jibaro\'s and of course The Breakfast. There are other places to get good music from; many of the local college stations have some great programs, there are a few good npr stations like WFUV around depending on where you live, and some good sounds on the internet and even satellite to some extent. But still WPKN has a uniqueness and independence that is very rare on the radio dial and we\'re fortunate to have that here in CT.
D. I think many people have a mistaken belief that WPKN is for old people; just folk and jazz or whatever. This by far is not the case, you just have to take some time and get to know the station and when you\'d like to listen. So I am trying to reach out to the younger audiences with shows like this as well so if they haven\'t heard it they go and explore it.
E. I\'d like to continue doing shows like this into the future with other artists, bringing some fun music into the area and putting it in venues that people feel comfortable. (not hassled)

2. The Edmond Town Hall Scene...
a. Re-entry is allowed.
b. There will be no heavy searches going on...to my knowledge there will be no searches.
c. There is no smoking...
d. Newtown, Rt. 25, is safe as long as you use your head, practice common sense and aren\'t being stupid about it I seriously doubt there will be any hassles for anyone.
e. there are bars in the area so come down early and have a few drinks or whatever.

Regardless of how sober or intoxicated one may be this will be a great night of music, as long as people turn out for it. Not sure how many people will turn up for this event, I took a chance on it and hope it will be good. If a few hundred + people show up I\'ll consider it a success and I\'ll be able to do it or something like this again. If not, I probably will go with more conservative bands...by that I mean, ones that will definitely have a good draw at this type of venue. While this is a benefit show there are still costs...if you get my drift. Only the proceeds go to supporting the station. The bands get paid, the venue gets paid, the sound co. gets paid, there are promotional and advertising costs...if there\'s anything left over it will go to paying the bills at the station.

As far as video taping and recording, it would be a great place to do it as was suggested...normally I have the equipment available and do this at events and then we use them for rebroadcast. They are being used for another event in NYC that evening so I will be relying on tapers etc. So if anyone is recording the show please contact me or come see me at the show.

Focus on the music and have some fun, I gaurantee (except for the lack of availabilty of alcohol on site) that it will be a good space to see and enjoy a show.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Cosmic Jibaros I would encourage you to take a chance and come early to see them! They are very good musicians, several of the players this evening are formely from Deep Banana Blackout and the percussion section lays down some serious rhythms. Not sure how to describe them, they\'re a modern latin rock band that incorporates some old style with the new...sort of a Santana meets Ozomatli meets Los Lobos...if one can really compare bands.

Also, one final note. This Friday from 2-6pm leading up to the show I\'ll be playing music from both bands...Tim Palmieri will be coming in for a live interview, maybe some acoustic numbers. Also Fuzz (formely of DBB) & Carrie will be their from Rolla, to chat and perform a bit. http://www.rollaband.com
Tune in, 89.5FM or online at http://www.wpkn.org.

Hope that covers it...see you at the show, email me with any questions or concerns I\'ll try to get back to you!

this show coincides with my autumn trip to waste haven to visit my old college buds, and its on the way!

is it a full length show?

(and by the way, WNHU 88.7 is also good non-commercial radio in CT.)

This will be a full length show, 8-midnight, 2 bands...and possibly a surprise guest between acts...in the works, more to come.

WNHU is great, as is a show we all know on WVOF! There are several good stations with good programming in the area...and on-line. What separates PKN is the overall station philososphy and the fact that they are 100% listener funded with no one looking over their shoulders. No money from a university, corporations, the govt., etc...it allows for a freedom that gives the programmer complete control that just doesn\'t happen at other stations. There are no playlists...so you hear a lot of music from the underground that you just don\'t hear other places, obscure stuff...and for the shows that are less eclectic in the sense that they are genre focused; blues, jazz, folk, zydecho, bluegrass, reggae, latin, etc...usually come with some people who are very knowledgeable about that area...they also have some alternative media/news programming and a lot of interesting guests. It\'s pretty amazing when you realize that these people are all volunteers and spend a lot of time just because they love the concept and doing radio. PKN is not for some, we don\'t focus on the lowest common denominator...we\'re not trying to please as many people as possible...if you do start to experiment with listening there tune in often at random times cause it\'s unformatted and there are a lot of different things, eventually you\'ll land on something you can\'t tune away from. OK...sorry about that...I get a little funny about it, cause of my involvement. It\'s definitely different, but there are good people doing radio other places too, just gotta poke around. But not at **** Clear Channel and the other mega-corps!

this show coincides with my autumn trip to waste haven to visit my old college buds, and its on the way!

is it a full length show?

(and by the way, WNHU 88.7 is also good non-commercial radio in CT.)

damn!  wish i was in town to hear this show.
You can listen online http://www.wpkn.org but the stream is fairly low quality...trying to convince others to allow this to change, but WPKN is a very low budget operation. They are minimalist, and since it\'s 100% listener supported, we are pretty frugal...

I understand AJ will be playing it tomorrow night on WVOF 88.5FM if you\'re back in the area by then.

peace,

Post by: OrganicNugz on November 01, 2005, 10:28:01 am
OK, for those who haven\'t heard it before, I do a show on WPKN called Organic Radio the 1st Tuesday of the month at 10pm. That\'s tonight, I will be playing some of the FF7 show for those who may have missed it and are in the general listening area 89.5FM in Bridgeport and 88.7FM in Montauk...covers a lot of CT all along the i-95 corridor into Rhode Island, pretty much all of Long Island in case you want to tune in. I will be talking a bit about the show coming up on 11/18 may replay some of the interview and live music from Tim when he was on my show in December and will also be playing some live Cosmic Jibaro\'s, who will be opening, from when they performed live on my show last month. And then from there I will be playing whatever I can pull together. Tune in if you can and please spread the word about this show...

Thanks to ME! for grabbing some flyers on covering the general Danbury area...if anyone else would be interested in helping just send me an email to bill@organicradio.org

peace,

bc

^^  unlike other public radio stations PKN takes ZERO $$$, yes zero casho from any government groups or funds, so a donation is a good idea and they are very worthy

Much agreed...I have been exposed to so much music from them and it\'s always good for a surprise or two!!! I don\'t even think of this as a donation, for $20 there are 2 awesome bands which will be playing for like 4hrs total that it benefits WPKN as opposed to some corporate entity is just a bonus! Totally worth the price...and something to look forward to in November. I am getting some flyers together, so if anyone is interested in getting some copies to post in their area and raise some grassroots awareness just let me know...

WPKN is hands down CT best radio station (89.5 - set it on your car radio!!).  I learned more about music in the year internship I did there then any other time in my life.  Chris Tesky does a bluegrass show on some Wednesday nights that is stellar, he\'s a real student of music, turned me onto Old And In The Way.  Phil Bowlers jazz program and Amir "Wednesday Nights @ The Movies" are definitely worth a listen.  They are close to ending their latest fundraising session (but it\'s not too late to make a donation - it\'s a tax write off, so give generously).  It always amazes me the job that they do on a shoe string budget, 99% volunteer work, people doing it for the right reasons, because of the love they have for the music and for the dying radio format.

Supposedly seats 650, but that has been asked to be reviewed, most likely an inaccurate number.

This should be an interesting show considering that it is in the Town Hall. Wonder if it is some kind of benefit.

seats 550 (400 floor, 150 balcony)...it\'s a beautiful old theatre built in 1930\'s for vaudeville acts. Preservation Hall Jazz Band (most famous of New Orleans) was just there and blew the roof off! It\'s not in a town hall...it\'s in a Theatre at the Town Hall location, connected. Picture a smaller version of The Palace in New Haven. No alcohol, but there are a bunch of local bars in the area to hit up before hand and they run concessions with water, orange drink, popcorn, snacks, etc...the sound company that\'s doing the show used to do sound for Phish.

It is a benefit for WPKN, a station that has a great relationship with The Breakfast, plays their music, and which the band listens to a lot. I hear Tim perform live solo acoustic on the air like 9 months ago...it was cool, he was on for like 4 hours, playing, talking/interviewing, and spinning tunes of his choice. Anyone else catch that???

I found more info on it at www.wpkn.org/concert/ (http://www.wpkn.org/concert/) and saw it on jambase too. Still not on official band or crescendo sites, probably after FF7. I am psyched to see them in a small room, the sound will rock  - they are doing 2 sets and they have a great opener, it\'s reasonable for a benefit at $20. I look forward to meeting some of you there!

Sweet sounds a lot like The Ridgefield Playhouse. This is cool. a straight shot down 84 and for a good cause.

organicnugz....first off: welcome to the board, second: thanks for the info/rumor...

now a couple questions if you don\'t mind....

1)where did u get this info?
2)are the breakfast confirmed?
3)what other shows have you seen there?
4)have u been into the bfast long? or do u like work for the station or something?

would appreciate any answers you\'ve got.....thanks bud

Thanks for the welcome!

1. I got the info from a programmer I know at PKN who is putting this together and I confirmed with Tim when I didn\'t see it on their site.

2. And yes, they are confirmed! Have you seen the Cosmic Jibaros? They are pretty awesome too, I caught them at SoNo this year...there guitar player is pretty cool too! They are sort of a little bit Santana a little bit all over the board...one of the players used to be in Deep Banana Blackout.

3. I saw "THE BAND" (most of them anyway)!!!!!!! at this theatre, it\'s a very cool venue...here\'s a link to details about that show. It was historical, and moving, cause it was shortly after bassist Rick Danko had past away. easier just to read this:
http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/872858/05192000/band.jhtml

4. Well, I was in a band with some of the guys from Smoke the Prophet and jammed with Jordan (he was in StP) a little bit at that time...I have watched and enjoyed Psychedelic Breakfast since Jordan got involved and they were still called that.

Hope that answers your questions...I don\'t mind. :-)

That show is confirmed.  It will be reposted after Halloween.  Some clubs ask to have shows in there region kept off the sites until after their show.

But yes...it is confirmed and is being promoted.

Tim is not making the City Wok solo show...animal is doing it on solo Djembe.  Tim is playing a house concert in a hut in Danielson.  The show is a benefit for retired greyhounds from the Plainfield track/

Ya...it\'s a benefit for local station WPKN 89.5FM http://www.wpkn.org and tickets are already online there but I hear they\'ll be available at some stores around CT soon. They will go quick, it\'s a cool venue...the town has about 2 cops and they pretty much leave ya alone if you keep it cool, there is no major search at the door. They are joined by Cosmic Jibaros who if you haven\'t seen you will be blown away! http://www.thecosmicjibaros.com

I wouldn\'t say that it is out completely. This booking agent seems to have many unconfirmed dates. They are probably just listing prelimenary dates.

Trust only the band website. If it is on the band website then you at least know the band knows about it and has confirmed it.

turn it up to 11 and it will look like the doors in the palace theater

There probably is some stupid law that makes noise after sundown illegal.

What website did you get this **** off of? Huh?

I want a slimpickens review. Is there a balcony? How many seats? Will there be orange drink served?

It\'s been more than a decade since I\'ve been there.  A decadent & slurry decade chock full of drunken surly behavior that I\'ve probably intentional forgotten.

It\'s your typical turn of the century small town government building - that just happens to have a theater in it.  Yes, if memory serves there is a balcony, however it is probably guarded by an impenetrable velvet rope.

Frankly, I fear that this shows success is questionable.  It\'s a horrible location, don\'t get me wrong, Newtown is beautiful, but not the the axis of Connecticut nightlife or as Neil said "everyone knows this is nowhere!".  The venue lends itself more to geriatric fashion shows then face melting life affirming music.

That being said, this is the Breakfast we\'re talking about.  The stage will be flooded by Ellis Lights, the music will come off the stage like a cannon blast and if enough of us get together for this the show and venue will go down in Breakfast lore as one of the greats.

I disagree.  turn it up to 11 and try to knock the place down

I am kinda anxious to see what kind of venue this is and how the show will go. Like Steffmo said it is a benefit so it will be for a good cause either way. Might just have to wait for the end of the show to get a lil\' crazy.

Well...
The Edmond Town Hall, a multipurpose building, housing town government offices, a movie theatre, banquet hall, gymnasium and meeting rooms was constructed for the community by a local benefactress Mary Elizabeth Hawley and dedicated in 1930. The building was named for Miss Hawley?s maternal great grandfather Judge William Edmond.  Responsibility for the management and upkeep of the facility resides in the hands of a six member bipartisan elected board of managers.  In 2002 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

But as Me! already mentioned, Police station is like 3 doors down.

So be smart, Newtown and Monroe are really quiet towns so their cops have nothing better to do than hunt for hippies and drunks.

Rt. 25 is one of the hottest police traps in the state (and this is coming from someone who used to live off Rt. 10).

This should be a fun little show. Might be real good exposure for the band too. Since a radio station is hosting it and that is the best way to communicate with some many people at once.

I second the motion to come one, come all to this show and show them what the Breakfast are made of.

right on.

It could be a night of blues behind bars. If this is true, I assume the police station is probably close by. Could be an interesting evening indeed.

What are the chances it might be an acoustic show?

Police station is maybe 5-7 building away a block or so.  And these cops don\'t take **** from anybody be very careful

Me too.

I don\'t know much about Town laws in Newtown but I don\'t think they allow booze into the Town Hall. I am only assuming here, so chances are I am making an ass out of myself, per usual. However, My concern is not with the booze but the circus/party that follows the band. What are they capable of????

The Edmond Town Hall Theatre is, as one might expect, inside the town hall in the town of Newtown. An independent operator leases the auditorium from the town and uses it as a cinema. Second run films are shown daily for an admission fee of only $2.

Supposedly seats 650, but that has been asked to be reviewed, most likely an inaccurate number.

This should be an interesting show considering that it is in the Town Hall. Wonder if it is some kind of benefit.
