:hscratch: ya take a 3-5 day break from checking the forums and all hell breaks loose and you have spend a good 2-3 hours to get back to speed; hell when I went on hiatus from here I left for a solid 6 months (or more or less) and wasn\'t as far behind as now, heh.
anyway, as to the whistling, steve, I have known to be a helluva whistler from time to time, maybe we should combine forces next show I happen to make it to and then this thread won\'t be singling you out.

I would never knowingly blow a whistle in someones ear.... there are many who have taken a ser whisteling due to me being a little on the **** up side, but i usually try to aim them up high or down at the ground....

Well here is the point.
The whistling is annoying and is done often enough where people enjoying the show have noticed. Several people in this thread have expressed that.
If it doesn\'t annoy you thats cool but it does annoy some. No one is asking anything huge here. I think saying hey man would you mind not whistling so much I am trying to hear the band is a big deal. It is one thing when it is some random person at a show. It is an entirely different matter when the person is a die hard fan.

it\'s not that big of a deal, it just sucks that when any one member of the band is rippin **** up or making a sweet transition into another song there is a 75% chance we wont hear it over a high pitch whistle. oh well......its a free world.

This **** is about LIVE MUSIC...I love tapers and what they do but that is not whata this is ALL ABOUT!!! The tapes are secondary to those in attendence...no on eother than a taper or those not at the show give a FLYING **** what the ttapes sound like at the show...GET OVER IT or GO ON TOUR! Jesus Christ, it is not like he is even near the mics, leith, you answered your own gripe...the venues are small, but the "tapes" are not supposed to infringe upon ones time being had at the show. The mics are generally put "on stage" right in front of those who NEED to be up front because of the love and pschotic devotion they have for this band and its music...what do you think, these people are going to be twiddling their thumbs and being quiet??? That is just ignorant. Stevie has literally saved a camera from falling off a stage and losing a show altogether. As I said before he tries not tpo get right near the mics...give the guy a break. He isn\'t grabbing mics and screaming in to them or whistling directly into them so it is not his problem...the band doesn\'t even hear him(from Tim\'s mouth). LONG LIVE THE WHISTLE!!!!
For the record this thread wasnt started by a taper.
The recordings are important to ME but I have never placed the recording of a show over anyones enjoyment. I wasn\'t always a taper you know.
But lets clear some **** up. Mics do not get placed on stage in front of anyone (usually). AUD recordings are generally made from a distance form the stage.

So untill the band and/or the band\'s archivist tell me that whatever I am doing is actually hindering what they are trying to accomplish, I will continue to just be me.......

You\'re talking about sound on opposite ends of the frequency spectrum. There\'s no way, bass bombs could cover up the schrill girlish shreaks that Genc\'s produces.
Well we could always have Ron just sing extra loud the next time they cover Tom Sawyer, I think the whistle and Tom Sawyer are pretty equal on the frequency spectrum ;)

Oh sweetie. I am in the best mood. Just because I argue a point does not mean I\'m angry. I can argue/debate a point all day and have a blast. No it won\'t stop and if it becomes a staple on discs then I guess I will not trade discs that have this annoyance on it. It is his choice to be heard and it is my choice not to heap that on others not expecting it. Simple as that.

i think you are missing my point here. I do not see how at a gd/phish show someone is able to "move away" from the audible distractions.. this my friend was everywhere it was the only real physical acknowledgement of the energy that was being mutually transpired from musicians to crowd and vice versa (besides people getting down of course :) )..I find that a similar situation has been developped with PB and thier crowds over the years..... and does stevie\'s whistle really drown out the music?? that is just plain nutso...
I understand completely your point. I am saying that in the small venues The Bfast now play the whistling does interupt the music. At least on disc. I totally agree that @ shows it is less noticable as there are other whoops and hollers many not coming even close in decibel level to the whistling. I found I moved away from Steve when he began to whistle yet I also remember attempting to hear it as a beacon @ moe.down. It was of course drowned out there so useless as a beacon.

long live the whistle!!! part of the reason i have become so absorbed by this band\'s music is the escapism and freedumb associated whilst enjoying it (especially in a live setting)... this whole concept FORCES some of us to loose our **** as a natural progression. this may mean a hoot and a holler or a whistle here and there.. it also may come in the form of some sweaty dreads spitting there venom towards you while my body contorts and fishes out uncontrollably as if I just hit a balloon of some medical (YUK!) I apologize to anyone whose feet I\'ve stepped on clothes I\'ve smothered in booze or any other disturbance one may find as an audience member but that **** isn\'t gonna stop as long as the face ownage will continue...
and it isn\'t like the screaming and whistles at phish/gd shows were treated in such a negatively connotated manner.. grow up or go home... punk\'s not dead mother fucker....
Yeah your stomping around does not affect recordings so much though. Also how can you compare the Bfast crowd to Phish/GD crowd in this case? Come on Gencs whistle would just be drowned out in the sheer #\'s and the music. The problem is size of venue & sound system vs Gencs amazing whistling ability. The reason whistlers etc were not noticed as much @ shows is you could move away from them! Where the hell are you gonna go @ a Bfast show? He can be heard above and OVER the music that is a problem.

I do not see how at a gd/phish show someone is able to "move away" from the audible distractions.. this my friend was everywhere it was the only real physical acknowledgement of the energy that was being mutually transpired from musicians to crowd and vice versa (besides people getting down of course :) )..I find that a similar situation has been developped with PB and thier crowds over the years..... and does stevie\'s whistle really drown out the music?? that is just plain nutso...

long live the whistle!!! part of the reason i have become so absorbed by this band\'s music is the escapism and freedumb associated whilst enjoying it (especially in a live setting)... this whole concept FORCES some of us to loose our **** as a natural progression. this may mean a hoot and a holler or a whistle here and there.. it also may come in the form of some sweaty dreads spitting there venom towards you while my body contorts and fishes out uncontrollably as if I just hit a balloon of some medical (YUK!) I apologize to anyone whose feet I\'ve stepped on clothes I\'ve smothered in booze or any other disturbance one may find as an audience member but that **** isn\'t gonna stop as long as the face ownage will continue...
and it isn\'t like the screaming and whistles at phish/gd shows were treated in such a negatively connotated manner.. grow up or go home... punk\'s not dead mother fucker....
Yeah your stomping around does not affect recordings so much though. Also how can you compare the Bfast crowd to Phish/GD crowd in this case? Come on Gencs whistle would just be drowned out in the sheer #\'s and the music. The problem is size of venue & sound system vs Gencs amazing whistling ability. The reason whistlers etc were not noticed as much @ shows is you could move away from them! Where the hell are you gonna go @ a Bfast show? He can be heard above and OVER the music that is a problem.

He is just an excitable guy that LOVES to whistle. That\'s cool but one has to realize self control does not just apply to drinking and drugs. It also is nice in social contexts such as a concert w/ other people wanting to hear a band and not some happy whistler.

EXACTLY why i do not trade discs w/ a bunch of his whistling. It is annoying and harsh to people that do not know Steve. It hinders enjoyment of the show being listened to.
As far as his whistling bringing back memories of the show? Fine but it lessens the enjoyment of people not there. Some crowd noise is nice but he is annoying. POINT BLANK RUDE

You\'re talking about sound on opposite ends of the frequency spectrum. There\'s no way, bass bombs could cover up the schrill girlish shreaks that Genc\'s produces.

Now, if Ron were to make the very hard to create high frequency bass feedback, that would at least be in the same frequency range and have a chance of covering it.
Solution: have tim play a telecaster clean single pickup which crips distortion. EVERYONEs ears will hurt so much you wont even notice steve anymore.

Yeah it may be endearing to some but it is actually just a damn annoyance and if he had any respect for those around him he would attempt to refrain from whistling unless actually emotionally moved to whistle. Once the band starts playing bigger rooms w/ less local flava the whistling will hopefully be drowned out either by a larger sound system and more people . I actually do not trade discs w/ a bunch of his whistles on it due to the grating interference it causes. This being said, I do not expect the whistling to stop but maybe you can just stay the **** away from any mics!!

i happen to enjoy the whistle a lot...i love listening to a show and being able to hear friends in the background/between songs..and my god i wish i could whistle like that whistler, what a talent.

I have asked more than once on this board and to fans at shows if they would prefer I stopped whisteling....and, as I am sure you can read from the replies to your thread here, the answer has always been, "no, dont stop whisteling".....

I will simply add that you all know how I feel about this.
It must be stopped. 1x -3x a show OK I can deal but prior, during and after each song is too much
I really have a hard time listening to any of the shows I have recorded since Beardslee castle Memorial Day Weekend.

He must be stopped!!!! Every recording I\'ve listened to in recent history has been tarnished by the whistling guy!! A couple of times on the last Porter\'s recording, it completely drowns out the band. It was really annoying at moe.down, too. I understand his excitement for the band but someone has to take the whistle away. I love to hear the crowd going nuts and I hoot and holler a lot but this guy is just too good at whistling, and at the same whistling sequence,........tweeeet.....tweeeet.....tweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!! Its too loud man, you\'re f\'n the tape up.
