I thought all the bands where awesome, UM is the ****, and the cheese was what I expected, overall goodFtime
-
not sure how Anchor Drops is, but LBDO.K. is really good.
More like Anchor Flops.
Right on. Incredibly weaksauce. LBDOK is the one to get.
-
went on sat. ok show IMO......walked in during Keller Williams set, first time I\'ve ever seen him so it was pretty cool, could get old fast tho. Then came Umphrey\'s which I was fired up for because they rocked last time I saw them. This could have been one of the worst sets i\'ve ever sat threw....terrible. Then Cheese. I know alot of people hate this band, but I thought they were on fire this night. The place went nuts when they covered Roundabout......all in all, I"m a big fan of the cheese again.
-
I know this convo has gone in a very diff direction but i never got to put in my .50... so here it goes
has anybody need to great woods lately?? I haven\'t since Pearl Jam. Can you still kinda party there before hand, or will they kick you into the show early. I\'m only planning on going in for the end of keller, UM, and SCI.
Personally as an avid GW concert attender i find that its best to go early with beers/food/etc and find a private lot (the first house after the last main entrance of the free lots costs 20 bucks and the people who live there are extremley chill) There is no wait when you want to leave and you can drink/ smoke/snort/ do anything you want really and they won\'t have a problem....Then usually a lil bit before i wanna go in i hit up the free lots and see if theres any type of lot scene/shakedown goin on.
The problem that I have with Great Woods and all other Mass. venues is that you have to be 25 to buy a beer if you are an out-of-stater.
I know this sucks....but (as an in-stater) I\'m happy to buy anyone as many beers as they would like!
-
yeah i know those bane guys, zach and pete play in a band now called silent drive, who i used to play shows with a lot. much softer sound than bane, but still retaining the same basic roots.
-
zurf what bands were you into back in the day? Bane? Converge? American Nightmare?
Def. Converge and lots of punk bands. We were just recently driving around with Converge\'s "When Forever Comes Crashing" blasting out the car windows. My sister knows Bane from her college days and I think they lived in her dorm at UMass. I haven\'t really heard any good punk/harcore music that may have been created recently. As far as I know, there are a lot of cheesy pop/punk/emo bands that don\'t really appeal to me out there. I generally listen to my old stuff when I hit the vault containing my high school music collection. There used to be some nasty local **** punk bands back in the 90\'s. One band I really used to like was called All Crome, though I\'m not sure if they played outside of New England.

some accidents could be considered blessings
Certainly!
Becoming a Breakfast fan was probably the best accident that ever occured in my life.

lol you guys dont even know, i used to go to crazy **** metal shows, and like that was my scene. this **** is my roots. NYHC is where its at.
That was my scene/roots too, falling into The Breakfast crew happened by accident.
-
maybe it was mtv2.
CTHC REPRESENT, I hear yah Cobb. wow.... the old days.......
definitly the old days. although i must say, hatebreed never did it for me. i was more of a madball, agnostic front, h2o, 25 ta life kinda guy.
speaking of which, i was playing this show in long island and in rolls the singer from 25 ta life. turns out we were opening for them, hahaha which was rediculous cuz our sound for those of you who dont know, is lightyears away from theirs.
-
sounds like success to me. wait, they show videos on Mtv?
-
i guess so, they sold out bowery ballroom tonight AND irving plaza tomorrow. i hear them on the radio and see them on mtv a lot. so i guess that kinda thing is in.
-
they got kinda an 80\'s progrock sound... is that mainstream these days?
slim = old man
-
CTHC REPRESENT, I hear yah Cobb. wow.... the old days.......
-
yeah they definitly cater to what\'s popular in the mainstream.
-
i\'ve never heard of these guys. listened to some of their stuff on iTunes, not really my cup o tea, but they def. sound talented.
-

Have fun with that Cobb, \'cause I wouldn\'t ;)
-
the brooklyn date is tonight, but i have scored a guestlist spot for the coheed and cambria show tonight in NYC. they are old friends of mine and it\'ll be fun to see them play in front of a sold out crowd at bowery ballroom. i am regretful about missing BSC but i havent seen these dudes since they blew up and got famous amongst the popular hard rock scene.

So is there going to be a keg and eggs breakfast or a get-together for you Northeasterners this weekend?
a lot of the folks from this board actually bagged on this show when the promoters moved it\'s location from west haven to danbury
-
So is there going to be a keg and eggs breakfast or a get-together for you Northeasterners this weekend?
you lost me here...... :chin:

well then i\'ll have to check out some studio ****.
-
actually i like their studio **** a lot more.. Local Band Does O.K. is a great album. the more i go to their shows the more i wish i lived in CT and not in IL. so im with ya on that.
-
i dunno i saw them at the jammys and i dled a couple shows and like they\'re pretty solid, but nothing about it really grabs me.
-
compared to every other band or compared to The Breakfast??
see for me its hard to be really impressed by anyone after TB, but UM is solid, they got their own sound and they are pretty good musicians. i could do without Brendan Bayliss singing all the time, but other than that..
-
i\'m just not really impressed by them...
-
Umphrey\'s kicks ass.
-
although i have devoted myself to TB, i think its foolish to hit on UM. i agree, i think TB is a lot better and it caused me to hate on Umphrey\'s for awhile b/c of all the fans they have and the cover they hit on Relix, but then last night I listened to the first disc i ever bought of theirs and it IS outstanding. so yes, im calling myself a fool for talking **** about umphreys at all, they do a fine job making good music. i just hope that The Breakfast will undoubtedly own the "Jamband Crown" in the near future, for they are the deserving ones of such a prestigious title.
-
The other thing to watch at the Fleetcenter is if you have a duplicate ID SOME of the vendors won\'t sell you beer. I had that problem last time I was there. My boyfriend at the time who is 28 had the same issue. It\'s pretty annoying I\'m sure when you\'re 28 and can\'t buy a beer. All because we had both lost our licenses and had to get new ones. ugh. They can tell it is a duplicate because, in NH anyway, there is a purple box around the photo if it\'s a duplicate.
Mama, your summary of Big Summer Craziness sounds about how mine would have I think. lol.
Keller is redundant as hell. I hate when he loops things.
How you feeeeeelinnnn... ahahahahahahaah      That has always been something I have laughed about with Franti... he has to say it like every 3 minutes. Good lord...
-
I am SO pissed about it being in Danbury now instead of Yale Field. I think I might just go to The Wailers at Toad\'s...Zen is still a possibility too.
i might just go to spac and see.....gasp.....moe..
-
definitely not, unless it was someone who doesn\'t give a ****.
They aren\'t called Massholes for nothin\'
-
i\'m pretty sure i remember people being able to buy beer if they were not mass citizens. i definitely think when i went inside the venue with some kids from ny they were able to buy beer there.
-
I\'ve been denyed at Great Woods and the Fleetcenter. I don\'t remember buying my own beers last time I was at Fenway (think I was 19 or 20 anyway). They weren\'t selling beer last time I was at the Centrum (college hockey playoffs), so I dont know about there. They sold me beer at Foxboro (before it was torn down) though. And I was also shocked I got sold beer/drinks at the Palladium at moe. but then again I wouldn\'t consider that place a \'venue\' like the others.
-
Mama - Great review, especially the part about UM.
The problem that I have with Great Woods and all other Mass. venues is that you have to be 25 to buy a beer if you are an out-of-stater.
thats downright silly.
truth, i was denyed a year or 2 ago at an ABB show even though I was 21 or 22

i was up there last summer for the dead/phish shows and the police were out of control. they were total **** at those shows and tons of kids got arrested/hassled. just be careful and look out for them.
on another note, i saw this so called heady big summer classic this weekend at the all good festival in west virginia. didn\'t get to see everyone cause i didn\'t get there until saturday, but i will say this:
sci-I WILL NEVER EVER SEE THIS BAND AGAIN
ymsb-
keller-overrated, repetitive, and if i must sum up in one word: CUSTY
michael franti/spearhead - alright, but enough with the "all the freaky people" "come on everybody" "get down" chants
um-saw them for a little bit but then went back to chill at my friend\'s campsite, they\'re ok but some of their songs sound a lot like the background music in the rainbow road level of super mario kart.
aside from the summer classic-the duo and victor wooten
dark star orchestra=highlight of the weekend
-
GW security has always been lame and they suck up there, also one of the worst parking ideas ever, IMO
-

The move is bullshit. You just can\'t change a venue at the last minute, who do they think they are, Phish?
-

Who is officially heading to Danbury on Sunday? I just got a confirmation on my ticket and I am looking to see who will be attending the 7/24 show.
-
Well, I\'ll be at the Great Woods BSC on Saturday, so if anyone else is coming down let me know. I\'ll be there w/ a crew of freaks heading up to SPAC on Sunday for Allman\'s/moe., so watch out.
I\'ll be there in the private lot right after the main parking entrance grilling and drinking with some buddies...can\'t wait

i like keller shows a lot more when he a) doesnt loop **** (seen it twice and it\'s a lot more entertaining and upbeat b) has friends to play with him.. tends to be a show full of covers that he throws a nice twist on. i think keller is talented and one of a kind, and his mouth trumpet aint so bad at the right time.
franti and spearhead -- got my first taste of them at HSMF and i had a great time. however, i think a second time around would be boring as hell b/c ive heard that his shows are always exactly the same, like jocelyn said. he also needs to take it easy on the "How You Feeeeeeeelin\'" he mustve asked about, i dunno, 70-80 times in an hour and a half.
YMSB is always fun. good musicians, fast-fast pace, solid bluegrass vocals, pull the crowd into the show. basically a total package when youre talkin bluegrass.
UM is damn good, but good luck trying to hold a dance groove. LOTS of changes but they do have the potential to draw a sick jam out at any given show. pretty solid song writing too, cant really stand Brendan Bayliss\'s voice after awhile though. whiney ****. they also nail covers extremely well. very good band, but they got NOTHING on TB. ;)
-
Gotta agree with Mama on this one...
I like YMSB, and UM from what little I know of them... the rest of the bands... meh. Def. don\'t like Keller and when he tries to sound like a trumpet I feel like killing myself, and I used to like SCI but I think they made a big mistake in straying away from the bluegrass... I think they are downright... cheesy now, and not in a good way. I have a real issue with Spearhead because of the way Franti preaches (shut up!) and also because every show I have seen has beern exactly the same.
That said, no Summer Classic for me.
Besides, I\'m on Color and Talea tour.
-
the venue change is bad news. i would rather go to great woods on saturday than to danbury on sunday. so much for duane\'s get together at his place... unless everyone wants to show up at like 8am if they are going to danbury.
-
because it is a bunch of bands that never make there way out here during a regular tour and they expect to throw a festival. This is Phish country and it will stay like that for a few more years. That is the same reason why Bonnaroo NE was cancelled. New England has the most people in one area and we all have similiar feelings that when Phish ended, the big festivals did too. Bonnaroo survives because it is in the middle of nowhere and it attracts such big names.
-
you\'re totally right... i figure that lots more heads would have shown up had it been in west haven vs. danbury... its such short notice at this point, people closer to danbury probably wont even find out about it....
... why did they have to change the venue, anyway? poor ticket sales perhaps??
-
I think I am passing on this whole thing. I hate last minute changes. I hung a lot of poster and gave out a lot of flyers for the **** thing to be changed.
-
i\'m definitely pissed that the venue was changed.... danbury is a long, crappy drive :(
-
Danbury...?!! that sucks. i hate driving up there
-
done!....should have thought of it myself. thanks!!!
alright folks.....jeff gittleman and seanaldo miller at my house 7/24 around noon. this will be a pre-game to the big summer classic show at yale field in west haven. i\'ll have burgers and dogs plus (vegans....um...cover yourselves ;) )...... i\'m counting on walsh to come through with his specialties. anyone who wants to bring a dish, dessert or appetizer....please feel free. THE POOL IS OPEN!!!! if everyone who wants to come will challenge timmy (prior to) to a game of virtual baseball, i can ALMOST guarantee he\'ll attend. tell him you\'ll play him for money and he won\'t be able to resist. then when i win it all back from him, i\'ll turn it over to the musicians. swimming, billiards, horseshoes, volleyball, foosball and hula hooping (we are going to SCI for christ sake) should be available. i hope many of you will join me both at my house and at the show as well. i love UM, really like yonder, want to see keller bad (i never have) think franti is great energy and want to see new monsoon also. honestly.....i want to see SCI also....i never have. it should be a great day. the show is at 400 i think, so noon until then should be a nice little primer with some great music from great friends. this is a family friendly event (my house) so feel free to bring the kids. as we get closer i\'ll post a roll call for food drink puposes and we\'ll take it from there. hope to see any and all of you there.
cancelled!!!! i\'ll figure something else out.

I can\'t send pictures from my phone, Verizon is gay. :(
-
There are a bunch of people that help with the festival that get all dressed up in costumes...I took a picture on my phone of a guy with a 25-ft tall tree suit on. I think he covered every inch of the lawn, it was hilarious.
woulda been a great story if you attached the photo to this post ;)

That glowstick war during Ghost at IT was the best glowstick war I have ever witnessed. EPIC!
DWD too... but Ghost had those ORANGE floaters that were insane.
I think I shed a tear that night.

last night after last set sold a grand worth of local maine beers for 2.5 a piece, what an economy.
-
going to the bathroom was a nightmare at any festival. usually just pissed in the empty beer bottle and the dudes legs behind me.
-
I think I shed a tear that night.
To be honest with you i almost pissed my pants that night...due to the fact that i couldn\'t drag myself to the port a pottys in fear of missing complete and utter epicness.

P.S. Bring glowsticks. Loads. Of. Glowsticks. We didn\'t have quite enough to keep the war going as long as I would have liked (aka all day).
Lol....my glowstick warring days are over, after the amazing show (both musically and visually) i saw at phish\'s IT festival couple years back....imagine 80,000 people in the most massive glowstick war imaginable!!!An extremely ser ghost jam to boot! I think i was pelted with more glowsticks to the back of the head than anyone else there!
i had the same issue at IT..on the last night i turned around to talk to someone and got hit with a glow stick right between the eyes..i wasn\'t injured or anything but it just gets annoying and overwhelming..especially when everyone is glowing and the colors are running together and you\'re starting bugging out. i think i remember seeing people burrying glow sticks in mud at some point that weekend..longgg couple of days
-
daaaamn.. i was supposed to go yesterday with my friend from work and it feel through on saturday. the encore sounded like The Everyone Orchestra at HSMF where Jamie Janover controlled a revolving door of all the musicians present for at least 2 hours. he had a dry-erase board and was doing all kinds of cool ****, changing keys, writing "dot..dot.......dot....dot..dot." and pointing at individuals who would actually play the \'dots.\' it was the coolest show i saw all weekend, for those going to 10KL check it out, the boys should definitely be joining in on this.. its too bad Steve Kimock is running the show there, though. hes very talented but sssslllllloooooowwww and i have a feeling he wont be able to do nearly as good of a job as Jamie Janover did. either way, its a show of spontaneous jams, damn id love to see timmy tear it up with TEO.
-
:( Why can\'t we have proper festival line-ups like this? Sounds amazing!!
-
I\'m in!
-
Kate thanks for the review you have gotten me very excited.
No problem, my friend. It\'s what I do. Like I always say, "music is love, so give it, get it, and share it always." And you should be excited...if the bands are as pumped and on fire as they were last night, you\'re in for one ser ride and a hella-fun day!
P.S. Bring glowsticks. Loads. Of. Glowsticks. We didn\'t have quite enough to keep the war going as long as I would have liked (aka all day).

Can\'t wait for the BSC to come to Great Woods 7/23...love all the acts billed and haven\'t seen most of them since bonnaroo of last year. Kate thanks for the review you have gotten me very excited. This will be my first show in a while that is not breakfast related!!! Sorta weird! Just got swept off my feet with the boys from staven and forgot about all my other music interests! Maybe if the show at yale field isn\'t sold out yet i\'ll come down and party with all the CTer\'s....
-
now that is a man of action!!!
-
i\'m really looking forward to this. how about a roll call for west haven on 7/24. pre-game at my house. i\'m only about 3 miles from there. details to follow. hey tmnatr....how about you and gittleman giving us an hour of some jammin for lunch that day? a little around the pool give back singing for your lunch!!!! ;)
-
sci=superheadie crystal bumping guys if you\'re into that
ymsb=:thumbsup:
keller williams=seen him a couple of times at festivals and he is talented but does the same thing every time..not really my cup of tea
um=i\'ve only seen these guys once at bonnaroo 04 and they definitely tore it up...
-
Cannot wait for that show at Yale Field. However, don\'t buy beer inside, unless you don\'t mind waiting in the longest f\'in lines ever. And don\'t over compensate for the long lines by buying 8 beers, then when you discover one friend passed out at the seat (drooling on himself) and the other friend has wondered to get up close, chug all 8 beers in an hour. You\'ll definately find yourself getting thrown out of New West later on that night.
-
been doing promo\'s for the Big Summer Classic when it comes to Yale Field. Got me a free ticket and plan on seeing what Umphrey\'s is all about. Listened to them and they are good but it is all what you do live that matters. This little tour may make Umphrey\'s BIG!
-
havent seen Umphreys yet
yer not missin much, i\'m afraid.
-
cant wait. havent seen Umphreys yet, and am looking forward to the rest..
-
The bands were on long enough IMO, mostly because a lot of the bands had members from other bands join them. Monsoon had some people from Cheese come up, Franti had the bassist from Yonder join them, etc. Pretty much it was 10 hours of 6 bands jamming continuously, save for 15-20 minute breaks for equipment setup.
-
sounds pretty heady
-
Thanks for the review. I figured this would be a real good tour, a bunch of big names. I\'m a fan of Franti and Spearhead saw him in Providence awesome time. haven\'t seen Cheese yet but am definitly planning on checking them out soon. the only thing i don\'t like about these types of tours is the bands are only on for a short time, just long enough to start getting into it (crowd and band). 17 person jam sounds SICK, will have to look in BT for the shows.
-
So yesterday, I attended the Big Summer Classic in Indianapolis. Talk about off the hook. It was 95 degrees and I almost had a heat stroke, but I have not had this much fun in a loooong time. AND I was sober the entire day.
New Monsoon opened at 1:30 pm. They were a lot of fun. They had a guy from India playing traditional Indian bongo things, a couple guitars, and a great percussion setup. Good band, look into it.
Michael Franti and Spearhead. I wasn\'t really looking forward to them, but after they started, 5,000 sweaty hippie bodies went nuts. They have a rock-reggae thing going on, and they know how to get down. They even have a guy on sax.
Umphrey\'s McGee. I don\'t have to say anything...they\'re getting better every time I see them. They didn\'t play Triple Wide like my section kept chanting, but we\'ll come back to that.
Keller Williams. My first time seeing him live, and it was a treat. I never appreciated his talent until I saw just what he can do with a guitar. He played Gate Crash, which is near and dear to Indianapolis\' heart (Deer Creek) and we all went insane. Also played Stupid Questions, covered The Dead\'s Dupree\'s Diamond Blues, and Boob Job ("she got a WHAT?!" ;)). Mad talent in this guy. Go see him live.
Yonder Mountain. So about 4 minutes into their first song, me and the 30 people around me erupted in a completely spontaneous hoedown 50 feet from the stage, dead center. This continued for the next 45 minutes. We cleared a 20-ft circle in the middle of the lawn and shoved people into to have dance-offs. The guys in Yonder kept laughing and pointing at us. :) I am now officially addicted to bluegrass. They threw down HARD.
String Cheese 9 pm. By this time we are all exhausted and couldn\'t be happier (or so we thought). My dream came true during their set: someone had brought in 3 whole bags of glowsticks, and there was a half-hour war on the lawn. I\'d never seen Cheese, but I\'ll definitely be listening to them now. They were so tight and their jams never lost direction.
Encore 11 pm. They announced that Keller would be doing the encore. He came out. Then the drummer from Cheese came out. Then the bassist from Spearhead came out. Then I said to my buddies, \'that sounds like Triple Wide by Umphrey\'s.\' Thirty seconds later the guitarists from Umphrey\'s came out and started playing Triple Wide. This trend continued until there were SEVENTEEN musicians onstage jamming their souls out. There was a guy onstage holding up sheets of paper with keys written on it, and he\'d hold one up and all 17 musicians would change keys right on target. At 11:30 the venue turned the stage lights off indicating curfew, and the guys just kept playing right through it. At 11:45, they pulled the plug to the stage at the climax of the jam. I\'ve never seen anything like what I saw last night. Franti also passed out trash bags from the front to the back of the lawn, and everyone picked up their beer cans and water bottles. We left that place spotless.
Moral of this story: if you missed Big Summer Classic, you really did miss it. If you have an opportunity to go, GO!!
