I was not egging Wah on as I repeated his quote and from what I can tell over the last 3 weeks or so, this method seems to be used to kill threads. Just tryin\' to do the same and let it rest. Then you start up again. Great job. KID!

I like the Cure so does my girl. I can assure you we are not gay.
RE: Grateful Dead covers and covers in general.
The Dead did many many covers, so did Phish. All of the great bands do them because like us the guys in the band are fans of music. I really like the covers because it sort of gives you a glimpse in to the musical palate of the band. I may be way off base but hearing the band interwaeve between original tunes and classic tunes is awesome. Example would be the killer Memory of liz reed -> coma -> liz reed. I think the band is in a place now that they put the "sound" on any of the songs they play. I think they do make the tunes their own, it isn\'t like they are trying to sound like Jerry or Trey. The phish covers are tougher because a knock on the band in the early days was that they sounded just like phish etc.
We all know the original material and I have to say that there a very few tunes if any that I dont like. sure there some I have heard more than others. I have seen the band do shakedown a few times and it is always fun because it is a good tune. Would I want to see them do a Warf Rat or something like that sure but because the pace and style is nothing like the Breakfast normally do. When they got really bluesy at the last show I was at. It is things like that I remember, or simply put the The Breakfast translations of the originals and covers is why I go to the shows.

ok read sloooooowly ok. When you post a comment saying it is not comment worthy you are commenting on the fact that it is not comment worthy thus that is a comment. See? probably not because you are an idiot who most likely had someone else pass his GED for him because multiple choice was just too hard.

As for my .02 on the issue. I enjoy the dead covers, and without a doubt think RoR with Sean was phenemonally done. As for a/more Phish cover(s), I have mixed emotions; people, in my opinion, are still touchy, and may not take it the right way. But the fact that PB has been noted as playing Phish tunes better than post-hiatus Phish makes me want to hear them bust out another superb YEM or venture into others (I like the David Bowie idea from the other thread, that song has some kick ass energy). Hell, I think it would be funny as hell to see Tim narate a Harpua, but that just wouldn\'t be right, heh.
I dont think Joe was at the Webster....
Regarding Harpua narration...Timmy has his own buquebus/blubladon narration that I HOPE will be coming sometime before my lifelight extinguishes....part of the buquebus..son of simpleton...saga.....
I haven\'t seen or heard of the breakfast doing a phish tune in a long time...when was the last phish cover by the breakfast?????
Phish tunes I remember hearing:
YEM, Stash, Weekapaug Groove, Squirming Coil. What else was played??
-
when was the last phish cover by the breakfast?????
Who cares.... keep them on the shelf.

leith,idiot,how do i compare the 2?
are you ser??
the cult
the cure
i know your not that burnt man...
Well when one places a subject next to another and describes them both which you did it is called a comparison.
The fact that you used The Cult to make a point of what you consider ok COMPARED them to the Cure. Now if you had used a more similar band like Soft Cell I could see that. Sometimes Wah you would be best served to just keep quiet when you do not know anything about a band. Yeah you may not like The Cure but I can assure you there are MILLIONS of Nonfags that love the Cure and understand Robert Smith\'s incredible contribution to Music be it playing guitar in Siouxies band or leading the Neo Romantic Gothic movement in the 80\'s and 90\'s. Anyway I got better things to do than give you a music history lesson. Out!

the cult=ok

Dude what? Now I really see you do not know what you are talking about.
How can you compare the 2?
Southern Death Cult was a wayyy more heavier rocking band than the Cure.
The Cure may not be as rocking but the soundscapes they created and Robert\'s lyrics are tremendous.
All I know is the Cure is a great enough band for 2 of my heroes to place Robert Smith in one of the best episodes of South Park Ever. "Disintigration is the best album ever!" -Stan

Boys Don\'t Cry w/ Ron on vocals. This would shred, actually many early Cure songs would be ripped up by the Breakfast. Killin\' an arab would be sick also.

they wouldve never played that if there wasnt a special sit in..

ramble on rose was great. one of the reasons is, that sean does grateful dead stuff very well, so it would make perfect sense if you were going to have a special guest such as sean, that you might choose to cover a dead tune. it\'s not like they\'ve been home and practicing with sean, so they picked something out and fuckin\' nailed it. end of story. they should and will cover whatever they want. (but i do agree with freddies choice.....OMFG)
-
They are due to play a Phish tune, and I think they should.
-
Completely ridiculous. ROR was one of my highlight moments of the night. I was up front taking pics and all around me I could hear the voices of 1000 people (seeing double) transcending the voice of Jerry. 1. with a special guest= all about hearing a good Dead tune. 2. never played and probably never again= once in a life time. I too never got to see the Grateful Dead, but they are what tuned me into the scene. And when I close my eyes and surrender to the Phlow it\'s a nice energy builder.
THE CURE SUCKS and phish needs to sit on the back shelf like a fine wine.

Well making it this far in the thread all I can tell is Curephan has his head up his ass and Freddie is SLIPPIN\' bigtime.
Breakfast covering GD is SER esp. since they don\'t overdo it. Plus how you gonna NOT cover the Grandfathers of the scene when they have so many songs that Rock? I mean no matter what their name is now this is still PB and GD is as P as it gets.

I was attracted to them because of the Zappa covers. They need to take advantage of GOOD covers, not songs from kids movies (ie Born to be Wild)...
easy rider was a kids movie?
no....and i think what curephan is referring to is the fact that born to be wild is one giganticly comercialized song, used in all movies, tv shows, commericals, muzak, etc, etc.... however, when steppenwolf wrote it, i am sure they were not thinking, "lets write a kids movie theme tune"...they were probably thinking, "lets write a tune that makes girls panties wet and then lets do blow off of their asses all night long while sucking down a bottle of jack daniels"....born to be wild released in 1968 defined rock and roll.....
I thought all the covers were done exceptionally. ramble on rose is definately the best dead cover they have done to date. sympathy was rocking too, but i was looking for a dead flowers with the whole.
curephan, have you seen the breakfast cover request thread? its got a ton of songs that we all want to see the band do. we all have tunes we would love to see them play... make a banner.... see what happens....
-
And about all this DXM stuff...What ever happened to smoking some doobies, eating some twinkies, jacking off, and going to bed??? Its just as good as NyQuil.
fighting a ser cold, i normally don\'t drink NyQuil, unless the other drugs run out...
-
the kids a goofball.
i had nothing better to do at the time...
-
Might i ask why anyone is even paying attention to the opinions of someone who is a fan of The Cure???
And btw, Phish and the Dead both rule. So if breakfast wants to cover em, more power to them...of course with so much good stuff of their own i don\'t really see the necessity.
they put themselves in the spotlight by making this thread, it opened all doors

so does 1 timing a bottle work?

im going out on a limb and assuming that curephan is a bigger phish fan than a gd fan.
i could be wrong.
either way,i totally disagree with him.
btw.
<<< has "one timed" whole bottles on nyquil in his heyday..
-
NO
Phish covers will be frowned apon once they make it into a regular rotation.
I concede, I don\'t know what I am talking about, this tasty bottle of NyQuil really is **** with me. Is a 3/4 of a bottle to much?
-
ok,1 more thing i gotta get straight.....
phish cover=coolio
gd cover=highly frowned upon..
right?
-
yeah i was one of the few..
-
strategic placement in a set of the proper phish tune would be ser.
-
curephan,tell me something
were you at the show last night?
-
i like the phish covers more because no one covers phish, in a regular band that is ( forget the Phix)..
-
totally spacey, whats up with this freddie charachter? he\'s pretty nonresponsive.
thats what makes posting on this board so fun, it\'s always an uphill battle...
freddie=the man
-
i could live with out the dead covers too. Honestly I\'d rather hear them cover phish songs because they have proven can actually do them ser justice. Especially if the main reason for playing dead tunes is to entice lame crowds/ new fans. And there is so many good ones to chose from. Phish covers obviously have a stigma/taboo attached to them though. But the skill the breakfast can execute them with should take care of that.
-

"regular" covers need to be transformed into "their" own song
but,
a one time cover, can stay as the original

curephan,you got problems man.....
how does it hurt to play tunes that
a.people love
b.people rage to

When they covered Mahavishnu that was cool, stuff thats good, not generic. That Gong song too, more obscure stuff so they can make the cover their own..

they could be covering better songs is all im saying brah
creative criticism is appreciated here...
what do you suggest?

yes....it does mean that among other things ;)

I have some similiar feelings about this too. Last night was an exception because it was played with a special guest. I feel that if you are trying to create an individual image, you need to explore your songs more, even if that means extended them in time length and putting fewer songs in the set. But, def. the Dead was 2 generations ago, in jamband terms(i.e. what I mean is, GD era, Phish era, ???era). They can definately play the tunes well, but I don\'t think it "attracts" a crowd, maybe older people who have a connection to the dead(I do not, never saw them). Personally, I think 1 cover a night is enough. or 2 well chosen ones. It wasn\'t for a couple of years before I started to notice how many songs phish covered.
-
hurts the bands image. especially when dealing in the jamband scene, the main goal is to further yourself as much as you can from your musical peers, become as individualistic musically as you can, hence building up your image.
-
in your opinion does this hurt the bands image or just a personal preference?
-
k
thanks
