i see what youre saying Wolfman, but i disagree still. if TB had frequent gigs (twice a month at least) in chicago, as UM did for about 3 years, the chance of people just showing up to a show through friends or just from hearing their name frequently, they would absolutely have a more rapid growing fanbase. their music is head & shoulders above any chi-town based band ive seen in this genre (UM is obviously the one exception), and yet TB still had less fans on a Saturday night in the city than these other mediocre bands ive seen on a wednesday night. playing only 1 night every what, 8 months to a year, in a huge city like chicago is not gonna spread itself like it could. i agree, umphreys is really good, but...
West Haven\'s population = 60,000 people
Chicago = 3 million people
i know you cant really prove anything in this debate, but come on, guy, thats a huge difference. even their chances of having someone show up to a show in the music industry with connections and $ that could help them move up is way better in chicago than in staven. but this is all hypothetical, i know, i just hope you see what im saying. more people=more exposure. and i do agree that there are a lot of big cities nearby their hometown, but they still arent FROM nyc where timmy could be playing solo shows before frequent weekend gigs at bars in the heart of nyc. i personally just think it makes a huge difference.
I would counter chicago with NYC. Psychedelic Breakfast made a name for themselves during the last revival of "Jam" music in NYC. The shows that they played at Tobacco Road not to mention Tims month of solo shows really got them in front of the people you are talking about. The unfortunate aspect is that fan friendly hip venues are a thing of the past around here. NYC is just like any other place (venue wise) there aren\'t that many good places to play (acoustics), gone are the days of partying in the city. Sure you can do it but it is sooooo much harder to do. The lure of NYC as being that place to cut loose is gone. PB had mucho support from all of us freaks at Tobacco road, but when the bar closed it kind of closed a era (short lived but still) and with it went the bands direct connection to the city. they have played No Moore Bar, Lions den, Knitting Factory and all of those places are fine but that connection isnt there. I have never been to Chicago but what is it like out there ? Do they still let you smoke in bars ? are there really cool fan friendly venues that let you cut loose ? If so I would love to hear about it
there are still a lot of great venues in Chicago, a ton actually. yes you can still smoke in every bar/venue in chicago. but to name a few fan friendly venues where ive absolutely cut loose with the whole crowd (even seen some titties on the dancefloor):
Double Door
Elbo Room
Subterranean
Schuba\'s
The Note
and im definitely forgetting a TON of places, incl. a lot ive never been to (only been 21 for 1/2 a year at this point). actually 3 of those places-- D.D., Subt., The Note, are all kiddy-corner. all great venues, id love to see The Breakfast at the Double Door, it fits them well. Schuba\'s would be fantastic too.
the spot where id reeeeaalllly like to see the boys end up within the next couple years is House of Blues. never been to any HOB\'s outside of Chicago, but this one is an A+ venue. the setup is great, they have 3 bars surrounding the main floor and 1 up on the balcony, the aesthetic appeal is the best ive ever seen indoors (paintings everywhere, grand hand-carved walls, balconys, everything you look at is a piece of art basically). ive see Denson there a few times, and the funk turns that place into a madhouse. umphrey\'s always puts on a nice show there too. ****, i could just imagine TB with a light rig at HOB, itd be undoubtedly incredible. the sound is also as good as it gets.
-
I hate UM\'s lead singer\'s voice... whiney & nasally...
-
UM is pretty damn good but nowhere near as fun or creative as Breakfast. Plus both UM guitarists at the same time can\'t step to T-Palms.
UM makes some great music but Breakfast melts faces, drops jaws, and creates instant converts.

IMHO,
The main reason I stopped listening to the Umph is because of the lead vocals. The music and the songs were tight and the jams were decent but then came th vocals and it\'s something about them that I just don\'t like. It, to me, seems like they don\'t match with music. I still have a couple favortie Umph tunes. Push the Pig is probably my favorite.
-
and leith, yes the tortoise will win.
but bayliss does not have soul. actually bridgeless makes me cringe, i think its one of his whinier tunes.

You could argue that the Northeast does have a large influx of really great young talent, so that it spreads the fanbase thin between all the bands. Look at bands like the Breakfast, Raq, the Russo Benevento Duo, Brothers Past, etc. all vying to gain a larger fanbase, all of which from generally the same region. Whereas bands like Umphrees(Midwest) and Perpetual Groove(Southeast) seem to have gotten more attention and are growing at a faster rate.
True dat. There is definitely a phenomenon that occurs in isolated cities where the people can get very attached to a band very quickly because they only get one or at most two shows in town a week so everyone goes to the same shows. The community is strong. Bands from outside town can get a nice draw even on their first time through because everyone goes to the same show. And a good band that is actually from that town can quickly own the better part of the city because it\'s rare for the people there to be able to see the same band over and over. In New England and New York you lose that opportunity for quick superfans because everyone\'s running around seeing all sorts of shows. However, you make up for it by having the chance to gain lots of good fans across several different towns. Overall I think that each setup has an equal chance of launching a band. It\'s up to the management to understand the region and work with it.
-
I like The Breakfast better because I love them, they\'re the fuckin\' Breakfast. But I will give UM the highest compliment I can give a band by saying that their product is equal to The Breakfast. They are freakin good.
Did I forget to mention forget to mention that they have the best jamband light show since Phish?
-
i have enjoyed all the umphreys shows I have been to. I enjoy both guitarists playing. I dig em but no one rocks out harder and holds my attention better than the breakfast.
-
i have never been to a um show but seen plenty of breakfast, imo every show is a different one and i mean everyone plays unselfishly and the feed off the engery of the crowd everynite, so if the crowd is lacking, their is onlt so much a band can do. granted i dont really even listen to um much but i did put a show in the other day, then went back to the breakfast. most of hte shows ive seen tb at have been in the north east and im sure this summer they are going to everyone will catch a glimpse of them, unfortuantely im not really to give up the free show at nectars just yet., its evitable. hopefully i can catch some shows this su

...if the breakfast was from chicago theyd have a huge fanbase already. its strictly power in numbers....
if the Breakfast was from NYC they would have been a traveling circus show following them right now.
Sorry buddy, but there\'s only evidence to the contrary on this. The Breakfast is from New Haven, which is a decent enough city to start off in. New Haven is in New England, which as we all know has about 20 legitimately gigable cities all within 4 hours of each other, and has given rise to all sorts of bands. There\'s no way to know if being from Chicago would help, I\'m sure plenty of bands flop there. And they might as well be from NYC, they\'ve played there about 25 times in 5 years. It has nothing to do with being from New Haven. 4 years ago PB and UM had equal products and did about the same shows. However, PB could play 20 cities within 3 hours of their home, while UM driving 3 hours in any direction from Chicago would get them nowhere. Today, the products are still equal and they\'re still from the same places but UM is 3 times bigger. So clearly it doesn\'t come down to home location.
legitimate reasons and i accept, respectfully decline to comment anymore on this subject

Tell those in search of a slow jam to check out \'Gypsy Girl\' from 1/26/01. Beautiful!
Zurflu.... we are trying to GET fans here, not lose fans....
I knew I could count on a rebuttal from you Marcial, the #1 Gypsy Girl antagonist. I\'ll stick to my position that it is a great song, even if Mark is the only one that agrees with me.
"Gypsy Girl where can you be?"

KindM\'s Droppin SER Breakfast Science on our asses....NICE!!!
like if his name was Buttafingas...

4/9/05 Ep.II>No Quarter>Ep.II = most amazing breakfast i have heard in my ears......until saturday
-
I think that this is good exposure for the band because it is not one of us from the boards who started this thread. It means we have fans outside of this small 800 person community. People want Breakfast, and you have to give the people what they want.
I guess now all we have to do, is get these people to the shows...
I completely agree with you here. The fact that someone over there was comparing the 2 bands in any way and that other people were acknowledging and responding to it as a legitimate comparison is nice.

UM is a great band who writes some very good tunes, and complex one\'s....however, they are very hit or miss from show to show. Of course TB blows them out of the water but you can\'t say UM is not a good band. UM also does some good covers. A big difference between the bands is TB is alot tighter, and more aggressive with their jams.....granted i\'ve only heard a handful of shows from UM
-
i dont think UM are all that great. i saw \'em at the jammys and i wasnt really impressed. i found them to be very run of the mill.
they definitely got talent, theyre tight, but everything sounds so similar after awhile. and i still cant believe how much people like Bayliss as a singer?! ive even heard people call him a "soulful" singer, WHAT THE ****? whatever, the breakfast will be like a giant wave, the peak starts on the surface then builds itself to the top where it then topples over and engulfs everything at high speeds.. **** umph\'s popularity, ive said it before, if the breakfast was from chicago theyd have a huge fanbase already. its strictly power in numbers.
I personally think Brendan\'s singing is very soulful @ times. Listen to any Divisions and if you still think he cannot sing w/ soul, I have no idea what you consider soulful. UM is an awesome band yet to me they are the Hare in this race and The Breakfast is taking their time just like the Tortoise and we all know how that race turns out.

I think we should also track down some of the old "die hard" fans from the past that haven\'t been active in the Breakfast community for a while.

You could also suggest that he listens to the 6-29-2003 show from the Jellyfish Lounge. The pace of the entire show is slow.
-
tell him to download a sick Gladys Pimp for a slow tune.... just to be a dick for a good reason.
I like the way you think.
-
for a long time, i was disappointed with my name, but then I realized I am who I am and thats it. Still not sure why my parents refer to me as spacey....
-
anyone think their NAME STILL HURTS THEM???????
-
I believe they will be setting the bar for bands currently together and those yet to be formed....
i agree, when i leave a breakfast show, and then go rehearse with my band, i\'ve got a million and one ideas in my head of how we could be better. and i\'m not in any way saying that we bite off the breakfast\'s style in any way, but i draw inspiration from their live show because it\'s unlike any i\'ve seen before. and i doubt that i\'m the only one.
Its all about fusion...
"Fusion is what I want...Fusion is BEST"
"takin the best from the best and makin it {your} own"
-
you make a good point!

Discussions like this amuse me... 90% of the people in them know one band so much more than the other. For example, "The Breakfast doesn\'t have any slow jams" is clear demonstration of somebody not knowing The Breakfast but talking anyway. It would be like me saying that UM doesn\'t have a single good song based upon the three shows (28 originals total) that I have downloaded.
-
As a follow up. I cannot imagine what the band would do if they were on stage in front of a crowd the size of roo or a festival of that size. they always seem to thrive off the energy (especially Tim) and I can only wonder what they would be pulling out.
There was an interview I read from Warren haynes and he made a comment that he thought a lot of bands these days lacked knowledge of the roots of music (he made the reference in speaking about how the Grateful Dead explored the roots of american music) I personally think you do not have to look any further than this band to find it.

The Breakfast, IMO, have a great sense of musical roots. In every song you can hear the influence of another musician/style of music.
they, as you said, lack exposure/management

IMHO the Breakfast is still a diamond in the rough. People who appreciate music like the breakfast. It always seems to come down exposure / management. I never understand why the band doesn\'t draw better than they do. If the numbers were there we would see them getting better time slots and bigger events.
HEAR HERE!!!!!!
One of the most amazing things about the Breakfast is that they keep improving and changing and working on "their sound". They have a unique sound that is rooted in head-spinning speed and seamless transitions...As they continue to grow and mature as musicians, I believe they will be setting the bar for bands currently together and those yet to be formed....
-
I dont think it has anything to do with them being from anywhere. I think it has to do a lot with timing. When these guys were first starting out the "Jam band" scene was over saturated (and some could argue still is). At this time the band was finding its legs and was always being compared to Phish (they sound like phish) etc etc etc. Since that time there has been a slight thinning of the herd. The Breakfast have steadily been floating to the top. No one that I have brought to a show has ever left saying anything less than wow. So the band also has a "sound" now.

Both Fairys this weekend were great.. havent heard many others recently so point him to one he can download from a recent show that he could enjoy for a "slow song," or tell him to download a sick Gladys Pimp for a slow tune.... just to be a dick for a good reason.

Great Big Jam from the last Porters show had what I think that guy was looking for as well.....Best Breakfast Jam to date in my opinion.....RELEASE!!!!
-
**** umph\'s popularity, ive said it before, if the breakfast was from chicago theyd have a huge fanbase already. its strictly power in numbers.
if the Breakfast was from NYC they would have been a traveling circus show following them right now. They would have been huge but they have to take the same honorable road Phish took, playing until someone recognizes.
-
Tell those in search of a slow jam to check out \'Gypsy Girl\' from 1/26/01. Beautiful!
-
my point is this.
the breakfast have a fanbase outside of this, which actually finds the Breakfast to be a good solid band.
The Breakfast are being compared to Umphreys at a time when they Breakfast average 50 people a night. I just think this is good because people actually want to hear the Breakfast.

I have never seen UM, but saw a few pics from a show.. it seems like a lot of thier fanbase is like 14...I was pretty annoying when I was 14..
i was a little punk rocker when i was 14.

Searching Phishhook this evening only to learn that we have been considered less annoying then Umphrey fans.
