Title: Cannabis in the UK
Post by: boombox on April 09, 2005, 10:13:04 am
Just found a useful page on the matter on a BBC site. The important bit:

C is the lowest classification for drugs and includes mild amphetamines (such as slimming tablets) and Anabolic Steroids. Maximum sentences are two years for possession and five for trafficking.

After it\'s downgraded, people will not usually be arrested for possession

Reclassification is not the same as decriminalisation. Users will still face arrest if the police suspect that they are selling the drug.

Critics have predicted that this will cause a great deal of confusion as the new guidelines haven\'t specified what amount users can claim is for their own consumption and what should be considered as a \'seller\'s stock\'.

They also point out that many people will probably mistake downgrading for legalisation. This could lead to more work for the police who might be confronted with people smoking cannabis as freely as they smoke cigarettes.

It\'s been downgraded to a Category C drug. which means, I believe, you get off with a slapped wrist and a confiscation of your stash if it\'s not much. However, if the man says you\'ve got more than what mis deemed "for your own personal use" ie,  you\'ve got enough to supply, you\'re still going to get burned.
