think though,  when most people go to a show and the band says they are going to play a few new tunes, most people are pissed,  or not pissed but they wanna hear sumthin they know,  on the other hand, some bands will wail that new tune for spite, or because they wanna prove something bout it (ie:TB) and all us SER heads are dancin like mofos

someone w/ a PT account should go set this guy straight:
"I am frumb Rhode Island and have seen the Psychodelic Breakfast countless times **** around at partys, playing the living room, Ocean Mist, and Even the Harpers Ferry in Boston and those guys are not have the band the Umphrys is. Sorry but they are a decent bar band with a good guitarist and thats all." orginally posted by Lenny1
it is the last post in greg\'s thread entitled "The Best Feud..." on the UM board

They definately need new songs...other than Fresh Cut and some covers there is NO enw Breakfast music out there to be heard.  Not to bash moe. but that is why they stagnated for sooooooooooo long before this recent rise in their popularity.  This is also why Particle has hit a wall as far as venue size(course withthis Hydra thing and openeing for Trey Band that will change.)  New Songs should always be put on the table even if they get no response and are shelved for a reworking orcanned after the first performance...keep it Fresh.

totally agree there.  for a while, it was tough going to so many moe. shows.  there was a span where I was guaranteed to see Okayalright, Buster, Not Coming Down, and St. Augustine pretty much every show for over a year.  They are great songwriters too, and I can understand where they were coming from that they didn\'t wanna force out a bunch of halfassed songs for the sake of writing new songs, but since Winter \'03>\'04, they finally managed to get the inspiration to write a solid amount of new tunes, and it is paying off for the best.  The tour they just came off of was their best since Fall \'01.

couldn\'t agree more WALSH,

as for Particle, I was into them for a little but then I began to realize ever show sounded the same. They went stale to quickly, didn\'t they play over in Amsterdam?

Freddie, your crack me up.  It\'s up and down with you. One second you\'re busting my balls, the next second I find a "Joe is an Official Tool thread", where suprisingly I found to be suprised as a dickless loser. Ha.  Just because I enjoy holding intellectual conversations about music instead of ranting on every message board on the web about The Breakfast doesn\'t mean I\'m a bad person.  You have issues.  Ball busting or not your behavior mirrors a 3 year old, rather than a 30 year old.  The cool thing is YOU were the one who brought up the trading band members thing and continue to do so.  I never started a thread about it, YOU and others made it public in the forum.  If I wanted I could tear EVERY SINGLE ONE of your posts apart, leaving you with your tail between your legs, but do I?  I have better things to do Freddie then go around in circles with someone who obviously doesn\'t have a clue what they\'re saying half the time.

I love The Breakfast and will continue to do so.  Part of loving a band is criticizing them.  It\'s the "can\'t do no wrong" attitude that ruined many bands, such as Phish, and I certainly don\'t want it happening to The Breakfast.  And Dave has made a forum for other music, which is where I post concerning albums I feel the TB community would dig.  So go ahead and call me a dickless loser, WRITE IN CAPS EVEN, just know that I\'m full of nothing but love for everyone on this board, even you Freddie.

They definately need to start writing new tunes and just playing them. Gauge by the audience reactions. So what if in Set I, third song in they play something they never did before, it ain\'t going to kill anyone.
Gotta take a few risks and play some never befores. It has to happen sooner or later or this ships definately going to run aground.
Of course, this will all have to wait until the real radio tour ends because they need to push RR tunes. But then again may be not...

I\'ve been appreciating a lot of these songs since 99.  I guess with WHat The Funk I\'m tired of the generic prototype jamband chord progressions.  I dig all the new songs off Real Radio, half of Deuce, most of Bona Fide and half of self titled.  I guess I just want a listening challenge with TB, not bathroom breaks.  For instance, What The Funk offers a jam in the same key. So say after the first chorus Tim decides to take a 7 minute solo, its all within the same progression, then comes verse 2, chorus, now a 4 minute Jordan solo, repeat same progression ad nauseum.  I\'d rather hear a Buquebus because the unknown will occur and make me happy.  Not only that, but I feel the band must feel more accomplished when they find themselves nowhere near the point they started out at in the song.

What the **** are you talking about?! what the funk is a great song, it would be a retarded, absolutely retarded, song to retire. listen to the 3/12 version!! and yeah Phaddy is kinda corny, VT song too in a different way, but all of them give diversity. writing new epics-- yes. retiring original songs, heelll no.

The only thing Diane about TB opening up for a major rock band is that there really isn\'t anyone out there they could be opening up for.  Phish shared the stage with Panic a few times, which was mutually beneficial because Panic needed the exposure up North and Phish needed it down south.  The Santana slot was a score, and opening up for the Violent Femmes in Europe was KEY!!  If TB ever shared the stage with anyone, coincedently enough I feel it should be Umphrey\'s.  They really have a wonderful organization over there.

The two bands have distinctly different songwriting styles though.  While TB rips with epics like Mooboo\'s, Tribal, GSOT, Umphrey\'s has more composed tunes and really has a handful of goofy brush off tunes.  On the contrarty TB needs to retire some of the heehaw tunes IE Phaddy, VT song, What the Funk and a handful of covers.  Then they need to be constantly writing and developing new material.  Writing a few more grand slam epics wouldn\'t hurt that much either ;)

I was looking through my early Phish shows the other day and started thinking about  the gigs they did opening for Santana and Widespread Panic. Something like this might be good for the band right now. It would give them the chance to play some places around the country without incurring as much cost as putting together the tour themselves. The summer festivals help in this regard, but it is easy to get lost among so many bands.

Great job over there.  They will get exposure and join the team.  Anchor Drops = boring album.  I listened to it just to give UM a chance.  Real Radio is king!
I agree wholeheartedly. I bought Anchor Drops with great expectations. It does nothing for me. I like their previous CD much better. As far as AD vs. RR, it\'s a hands down knock out punch for Real Radio!

I would love to see a duel between Herring and Timmy any day.

Indiana is pretty populated. The band started playing to the ND crowd and it\'s a huge market.
CT is a secondary market at best which is why it\'s a little tougher coming from this area but moving is something that should have been done in year 2-3 if was ever gonna happen.

The bottom line is that if you tour enough.. it doesn\'t matter where you hang your hat because you\'ll be visiting all the markets ona regular basis anyway.

every time i post anything on UM\'s PT board, i slip in comments about The Breakfast. always. i actually got a few people to give them an honest listen and a couple people said they were quickly "falling" for em. i gave a list of about 5 or 6 songs for people to download to get to know their sound (songwriting, jaw dropping jams, vocal diversity) and it seems to be working. ive already got 15 people rounded up to hit up TB\'s Chicago show on 4/30, FIFTEEN and im just one person!! and all who previously never even heard the bands name. thats not to mention all of the people i get into conversations with at shows-- i end up preaching and making people promise me they will see em because i tell them i know they will be blown away. people seem to take it really well too. even little **** like some kid was posting from Dayton OH and i told him that Columbus is only a little over an hour away, so go see THE BEST band around right now on Wed. 3/30. he said he was gonna bring a couple friends.

if everyone (esp. outside of CT area) sincerely puts effort into spreading the music and word it will catch on pretty quickly. in my area, it is. for everyone i have listen and burn shows for they keep asking for more and they LOVE the tunes, and theyve got friends who now have heard em. patience and effort = TB eventually getting on top where they no doubt deserve to be. im honestly working my ass off to get a crowd here in Chi-town, and i give you my word it\'s working. ****, i just remembered some dude that\'s a trey/barber freak, i will give him a call tomorrow and i know he\'ll be in. hes got a few close friends that were Phanatics and Biscuits freaks too, so by my calculation thats about 18 people now that i directly will have going to the Elbo Room. think about the exponents guys! only a short matter of time.........

No one reads the Yonder board anyway.  The only reason it was made was because Paul started it as a favor to a friend who pushed for its inception way too much, I\'m pretty sure he isn\'t gonna make that mistake anymore.  I\'d hate the site as a whole if it wasn\'t for the moe. board(and I occaisionally check out the Biscuits board), the Phish board is horrendous and I feel bad for anyone who actually takes the time to read that stupidity.

absolutely right about the sit ins, chose more wisely, why they beat a dead horse with Max Creek and all that is beyond me but I will say this, they need to take another step and take advantage of the summer festival season and collaborate with some musicians. They have a great funk fusion thing working for them and they do get better every time they are on stage.

The one thing I would like to see from them, and I know it takes time to build comfort and learn where everyone else is but I want JAMS not segues, I would like to be lost in the grand scheme of things and end up in something else like (fill in your own song). Segues just don\'t really do it for me, I like the improv jam, lose me in space and let me find my own pace.

I don\'t think anybody\'s at fault for being overlooked, its just a matter of most full time touring bands don\'t have the time to keep up w/ all the other young bands out there.  Umphrey\'s first encounter w/ moe. was the 1st Bonnaroo and was because they had covered moe.\'s Rebubula and they let 1 of them sit in w/ them for it.  It also doesn\'t help that the Breakfast play at festivals headlines by Max Creek and Strangefolk when they should be mixing it up w/ bands that actually made something of themselves, and not still play the Living Room after 30 years.  Either way, give it time, the talent is there, and it can\'t be denied.

saying, "what did we do"... is a dream of many like some of yours

Festivals, all summer long is the answer. So many walks of life and all you have to do is be on stage.

My opinion of the Breakfast covers are that they usually make them sound better then the originals, however, i think a little more effort into chosing the covers might work out.

to me, I think they are still working out their sound, with a little patience we will push right throught this and will be left saying "what did we do".

as long as they continue to give 100% on stage I will continue to go to the shows...

All in all, in my opion UM is good. But the Breakfast is great! It seems like UM has quite a bit of help. String cheese loves them. Same record label, even their websites look similer. moe. supports them. It is almost like every other jam band has left the breakfast over in the corner. From the sounds of it this year it may finally change with moe. down. They need to get in the big festival scene bonnaroo would be nice huh??? Before ya know it they will be playing to twenty two thousand and we will be saying.........what did we do :)

I love the Zappa/Funkadelic covers. Plus they cover Focus, which is incredibly cool.  Everything else seems like a WPLR(classic rock station out of Milford,CT) play list, their needs to be some creativity in choosing what to display to an audience.  I could list 13 covers that TB could adapt as their own, knocking the socks off the crowds every night.  But as I discussed with Timmy many times, he\'ll always be about "rock and roll".

I got little to no complaints at all with the Breakfast covers.  I think most covers they play are really good at displaying all four of them\'s vocal chops, and musical inspirations.  I\'m sure you hate them, but I\'m a sucker for most Ronnie covers(In the Flesh, Karn Evil 9, Tom Sawyer, etc.), and they are good at making them sound better than the original, in my opinion(Hush for example).  Don\'t get started on the Zappa covers....

Maybe they should cut down on the Doors covers and the Dead ones as well.  But Manzerik(sp?) is clearly a huge influence on Jordan, so I can\'t blame \'em.
Title: apology for the long post

thanks joe...

My opinion on the Umph is this... they are truelly talented muscians coming from the midwest who happen to be next to a blues city, Chicago. They have been dealt a really good hand and have taken full advantage of that, no harm intended to the Umph. They play around, it is what makes you known. I have many UM shows on disc and were really into them for a year or so before I came apon the realization that something urked me in their music. I listened and listened and then it dawns on me (remember, totally my opinion).

"Very tight jams, know how to play music, then right as the jam is getting done and they start to get ready for the vocals, the guy sings, and to me it just doesn\'t match up. The music is much more better then whoever sings, the voice just killed me, thats when I gave up on them"

I think the Breakfast need to do a little collaboration with a horn section for a weekend of shows or pull out a few big name special guests, just to get their name out to all those jambands fans, because in the end you don\'t have to love them, just like them enough to go to a show and have a good time! In the end thats what its all about.

Umphrey\'s is really progressive, that is they barely rely on improvisation.  Some of their originals are classics in the making while others can sound monotonous.  AS far as covers, they chose some of the best covers out there, which definitly boosts their reputation. I remember bitching about the TB covers in the covers thread so I won\'t tread those waters again, lets just say with a little manuevering the boys could be turning a lot more heads :)

Ehh.. I got a few shows I got a month ago or so, still haven\'t given them a solid listen, but I\'m sure I will eventually.  I saw them for the first time at the Middle East(downstairs) in \'02.  I had fun and they really are great at what they do, there was just something that was missing for me.  The songs themselves(esp. the jams) just seemed a little too forced for me, I dunno if that makes sense to you.  It just seemed like a formula of some lyrics, a bouncy riff, toss in a heavy metal jam here, etc.  It just lacked a little flow, and some soul too.  I\'m sure they\'ve gotten much better since them, but its hard to keep up w/ so many bands these days, and its gonna take them to come here more and me to get some more experience in to change my opinion.

I had a chance to see them 3 more times, but the first time I forgot to bring a 21+ i.d., I only caught the last 2 songs of their set at Waterloo, NJ in \'03 where they played acoustic cuz of the horrible weather, and I decided to listen to their moe.down 4 set from my camp site while eating lunch and getting **** together for the rest of the day and such(which means i wasn\'t paying much attention).  I will be seeing them at Summercamp on Memoe.rial Day Weekend, so we\'ll see then.

don\'t think moving is going to make much of a difference at this point, they are a Connecticut native band, perhaps, maybe, the focus needs to be realigned! I will be the first to say that CT doesn\'t hold that much promise for much but it is postioned right between good ol\' bostonia and new york city. maybe the focus should be on building a better fan base outside of CT and take over a larger city.

Message board, fwiw, are the new form of communication, more is heard or read for that matter then one could talk to in the matter of minutes, of course, you then have to be careful as to what you say...

Patience is key right now, we have to wait this out, I expect the summer>fall to be a very hot time for these guys...

Umphrey\'s rocks, you really should give them more of a chance.  I would never ever want to pit TB against them, nope, not in a million years.  The phantasy boards are a joke.  I can\'t believe some of the **** I read on there.

"I drank some Oaty stouts, popped 2 OC\'s then dropped some Molly, puked all over my brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee then raged till 11 the next day"... hetty.

At least in Boston they\'d have a chance to rule face over a larger population.

Don\'t pimp the Breakfast on the phantasy boards.  I\'ve never seen so much drivel and immaturity in my whole entire life.  If you want to get the attention of the Umph fans go to the bort  www.umphreaks.com (http://www.umphreaks.com)   Phantasy kidz....... ppptthhhh, the downfall of the music scene.

As far as TB, its really about connections, and I don\'t know if they use them or not.  I just don\'t see CT being all the great for a band like TB, maybe NYC or Boston.

Then consider me the downfall of the music scene.  You can\'t categorize everybody by a message board they post on, that just foolish.   I\'m not even an Umphrey\'s fan, so I\'m surely not gonna sign up for their personal fanbases site just to talk about other bands.  PT is fair game, and believe it or not, there are some smart and worthwhile people out there.

Lastly, Boston sucks.  What was the last great band to even come from there?  The high percentage of University pricks and drunk irish locals can **** up the most enjoyable of nights.  Plus you get to pay top dollar for beer, get treated like an **** by security, and deal w/ an overtalkative, underappreciative crowd.  The shows two weeks ago in Boston and Providence were a perfect example of how a little energy in the crowd makes the show that much better.  Even through the snowstorm, the Providence crowd came through, and livened up the place.  In Boston, no one stood w/in 5 feet from the stage, and more than half the crowd was stationed at either bar, and not paying nearly enough attention.  I\'ll take a CT, Providence or Worcester show any day over Boston.

Amoeba Rox. I spent over $100 in Feb. up there. Gray just told me abt Amoeba in L.A. so looks like I gotta check that out also.

Amoeba is on Sunset down in Hollywood.  There are some other good stores in Oakland and San Francisco that offer lots of funk/soul/groove treasures in addition to Amoeba, though Amoeba is the largest store around.  Amoeba has so much music that there are tons of inefficiencies to exploit.  Many great albums are mistakenly priced at $1.99.  You could find a used copy of Bona Fide in the $1.99 bin while there could be another copy in the store priced at $9.99.

Igzi, Is SO CORRECT it is ridiculous. If The Breakfast was from out here say S.F. they would be big right now. Really! They would be playing to 500+ every night they played. The good thing is that they do have a pretty good start in the NE and as Steffmo pointed out in another thread Boston is turning into a Breakfast town. I remember another 4 piece that Boston made its own, does anyone else?

I really don\'t think starting an Umph vs TB feud is going to get TB anywhere.  Just my .02

Thats where you\'re wrong.  A war is not intended by any means, don\'t let the topic line fool you.  It\'s just about getting the attention in the first place, and the rest will speak for itself.  You can\'t just come at those places w/ the same old \'hey, check out this band...\' and expect people to care, or even notice for that matter.

As far as the working twice as hard part.... The band should be proud of themselves and how hard they have been working.  They just have it rough as to being a jamband in the Northeast.  There\'s just so much out there, that its hard to get a solid continual following around here.  I\'m sure if they were from the Southest, West Coast or Midwest it would be a different story, but if you can make it up here, then you can make it anywhere, and this band has the skill to really make it up here(just my $.02).

I don\'t mind speaking my mind when it comes to the band, the perception of them in the professional world or ways they can improve themselves.  I only wished I stayed in CT.  I used to hang with Timmy, help him with stuff, give input.  I miss those days :(

Joe you suffer from being honest to a fault when you express your feelings abt The Breakfast. I totally see that all you want is for the guys to make it but somethings just are and acceptance is OK. I have come to the realization that my desire for this band to make it big needs to be tempered w/ patience or frustration will set in.

are you SER?  they\'ve got a following here.  you cant just move across the country and expect the same fan base or even expect to play in the hot clubs.  they are doing it the right way and trust,  05\' TB will break out, o yes they will break out!!

So why don\'t they move?  I once recommended that to Timmy back in the day.  You got to sacrifice to make it.  Umphrey\'s were from Indiana originally and moved to chitown.....  The ripples are still moving.

its all in the delivery, if i just go to pt, and post the same cookie cutter bs on all 8 boards, then no one will give a ****, but if you get a rise out of them first, and then give some well thought out opinions and point them in the right direction, then it actually works sometimes.  it def helps when people chime in in agreement, so i don\'t look like the only one who feels that wya.
