Title: Some GD recommendations from WALSH
Post by: WALSH on February 14, 2005, 04:47:35 pm
In an effort to get myself some 80\'s era Dead I have come across some GREAT sounding shows that some might know or not.

10.26.80 SBD-one of the only FULL acoustic shows that are worth dling from archive on that Radio City stand.

1980 Florida "Turkey Tour"

11.26.80 SBD- minor level probs in d1t1 &d1t2 but after that it is BUTTAH!!!

11.28.80 SBD- sounds as if it was a Dick\'s Pick quality...great show.

11.29.80 FOB- "Alligator Alley"...not a SBD but one of the best aud\'s that i have ever heard...this is why the good FOB\'s can be better than SBD sometimes.

9.6.80 SBD?matrix?- Lewiston...some of you will know this show but this source is FANTASTIC.  Unreal show.

5.16.81 FOB(senn441\'s)- Great show from Barton Hall, no less.  Something about that place, must have been magical.

Just a taste of what I have been checking out and dl\'ing...figured I would give a head\'s up for anyone that still listens to the Dead.

Billy K. is a rock! His drumming in the years when Mickey was not there absolutely incredible!! The Dead never sounded tighter for sure. They even had trouble readjusting to Mickey coming back.lol

Ya leith, bruce breathed lots of new life into jerry, lets not forget the great 5-8-77 show cornell everyone has that, phil with the great bass lines,
also that branford show 9-10-91, that is a classic.
you said 74?? how about 10-20-74 three sets,
maples 2-9-73, I think was that the first wall of sound show????
geez I could go on and on any other years? you might want a suggestion. It depends on what you like, I love the drums and even play them, but I also love 72 , 73 dead when there was only one drummer billy is great they had a little more sense of tightness.

I agree, they have the unspeakable energy.  It\'s hard to go wrong with any show, but that 90 show is out of this world. I first heard the Eyes from it when i was 4 and I\'ve never been the same since...

Actually Joe. When it comes to GD I\'m kinda diiferent than most. I really cannot say that any of their output is bad. I mean yes some of their later years were not up to the Legacy they had built but that just goes to show how FUCKIN\' awesome they were!!
I ate acid for the 1st time @ my 1st GD show so I\'m totally biased when it comes to GD discussions. I will listen to any show by those guys @ any time.

Branford and the Dead melded so perfectly that night. If you do not believe in telepathy how the hell do explain this night?

Gotta agree with 68/69, though I know much has been made of the May 8th 1977 Barton Hall show as being a must have show. It is great, but give me Pigpen era dead any time.

And yes, another vote for not bothering with anything post-Brent!!

Uh huh. No i understand ALOT of people don\'t like Vince era GD and to tell the truth the few Dead shows I caught w/ the \'03 Line-up matched most of the GD shows I saw in \'94/\'95. For me I LOVE \'85-\'89 as I basically lived on tour . The reason I love \'90\'s GD is mainly the touring I did w/ what I consider my family now. But you can\'t beat 5/31/92 W/ Steve Miller actually keeping up w/ and pushing Jerry. Phil fighting the ENTIRE band to go into the Other One from Spoonful lol.
Oh and on 8/16/91 The ONE and ONLY Scarlet>Victim>Fire>Truckin\' second set.

Stay away from post 90 stuff. Man I thought after Jerry died people would give up that whole GD sux in the 90\'s stuff. Man Anyone who thinks that all post \'90 GD is not worth listening to misses SOOOOOOO much. Oh and if you like Bruce Hornsby playing as a MEMBER of GD try finding that pre \'90. Sheesh some people :sigh:

MInd\'s were blown that tour. I \'m a huge fan of \'91-\'92. Bruce helped breathe some life into the Boyz and it was the zenith of what I like to call "Electronic Dead". If you know the Dead you know what I\'m talkin\' abt.

Duane? Well it all depends on what ya like. I mean each era totally diferent. So here\'s my choices 60\'s:any show from the Fillmore West should be fairly available and totally PSYCHEDELIC!!
70\'s:12/5/71, 8/27/72, 5/26/73, 7/13/76, 2/26/77, 8/30/78
80\'s  WARFIELD shows in Sep./ Oct. \'80 just pick one, 9/30/85, 12/15/86,7/30/88,
90\'s 3/22/90,8/16/91, any of the MSG or Boston Garden from fall\'91,5/31/92, 8/21/22/93,
These give you a wide variety too choose from i think.

I realize that for some you this may be an impossible question but...

I figure it\'s time that I start taking advantage of the ridiculous amount of Grateful Dead shows available online, but I have no clue where to start.  So I\'m looking for all of you old-timers to recommend a show for me.  Historic, personally memorable, or just a kick ass show... whatever you feel a Deadhead in training should definitely know and love.  Thanks.
