Well that is similar to how they first started nabbing people with pot. Before they were able to get enough initiative to outlaw it, Aslinger devised a plan where you had to have a tax stamp to have pot. Thing is, if you went in to get the tax stamp, the only way you were able to get it was if you had the pot in hand. If you went in to get the stamp, with the pot in hand, you had pot with no stamp and you had broken the law. So you get arrested. This ingenious little idea was originally used with machine guns (remember this was during the gangster era) and then was adjusted to work for marijuana as well.

i think that points were pretty well made, some were pretty well taken, friendships were ruined, and most people are all still pissy....

damn....if i told freddie to bite me i would get responses all day...but when i sit and actually form a litterate and well thought out post.....practically nothing.

One also has to consider the fact that they are very unlikely to ever legalize marijuana seeing as it would be virtually impossible to tax. They can make gazillions taxing tobacco; it is hardly feasible for you or I to run a plantation and thus we must buy butts/rolling tobacco/whatever from stores. It is no big deal to grow enough grass, however, to keep oneself happy. Since most would just grow it themselves, and not buy it from stores, if it were legal, it would be nearly impossible to tax. Not very profitable.

multibillion dollars is exactly the reason. the tobacco industry and the liquor industry pours so much money into lobbying to keep pot illegal, that the idea of legalizing it isn\'t something that the recipients (congressmen and senators) will ever consider while they are still able to receive this "stipend". no taxes levied would make up for this tremendous amount of "legal" bribery. also, the law enforcement agencies in this country have gotten very used to fueling their budgets with the "war on drugs". if this gravy train was denied to them, they might have to actually go out and chase real criminals instead of focusing on non violent drug offenders. they continually use propaganda and half truths to keep the people of this country misinformed on this issue. the resources used to chase this plant could and should be redirected to the social ills in this country that will ultimately lead to it\'s demise (homelessness, medical insurance, hunger, etc...) instead, after ruining the lives of a few people who are hurting NOBODY, they pat themselves on the back and tell each other what a great job they are doing.
-
man, a lot of people had something to say about this one.,.. i dont usually post, but im glad most of you guys sees the event as being unfortunat and i hope you all can sympathize with the ones who got nabbed. it sucks. and it really hurts me personally to hear people finding amusement from this event. these cats who got popped gotta go thru fuckin hell now. in march i go to prison in CT on drug charges, its not some joke. i guess im really late in saying all this as it has been said already, but iread thje thread late and i couldnt help responding, just remember, if you break the law it could be you, and whether you are a doctor, dealer, insurance salesman, painter, musician there is no social equalizer like a mugshot

I am wondering what the long-term trend will be.
My dad seems to think that it wasn\'t as big a deal back in the day when he was growing up in Oakland, CA. He said that all his friends that grew pot in the 60\'s probably wouldn\'t have been punished as severly as someone getting caught now.

its not my taste, but if he\'s a dentist he\'s obviously not ripping people off or robbing convenience stores to get it, it doesnt sound like hes trafficking or selling, and if he can still do the job without killing people then who are we to decide, is my opinion. why f%^ w/people with jobs that contribute to society and arent out there harming anyone?
-
Well, can\'t feel TOOOO bad for him. Heroin is def. where I draw the line.
I suppose that\'s kind of stupid, saying some drugs are ok on the boat and others are not. Nonsensical knee-jerk reaction I guess. Atleast I know I\'m a hypocrite. :)

40-year-old Christopher Kew Wong,(Felony) a telecommunications salesman from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was found to have 12 small baggies of heroin and four grams of marijuana, which he told arresting officers was "for personal use."

I kind of thought this guy was funny.
-
He should have known better. When I was a Licensed Psychiatric Technician/ Vocational Nurse I made sure friends carried my stash or I made plans to obtain in side the show. Every time. I totallly was afraid of losing my license over Bud.
-
One guy was a dentist....felony= license GONE!!!

the only thing i can think to say is i feel really sorry for those people that have/ OR HAD real jobs- an audiologist, some kind of big salesman etc. they\'re not 16yr old kids and this could really mess things up for them. very sad.
and worse, the govt people probably knew this would be the case because what teenager can afford a jamcruise?

Thanks Boom.
IMO making this kind of petty stuff a priority for our goverment resources is a complete waste. What they should be focusing on are things like where in the hell is Osama.

Joe, I\'ve never met you, but have to agree with freddie and duane on the whole. My reasoning:
1. Unfortunately the scene has always been the subject of police bullying, right back to the early days of the Dead. Those poor sods being arrested and missing the boat for a bit of weed is ridiculous. The narcs could have confiscated it if they must and let them go with a warning, even been waiting for them to dock at the end if they wanted to be real ****, but to cart them away is going too far - it\'s not as if they were dealing with the paltry amounts mentioned - yeah, if it was a couple of pounds or a few hundred tabs, as freddie says, let \'em have it. Yes, you can argue, they knew the law, but how many people do any of us know who don\'t use the odd bit of recreational chemistry, or do 5 mph over the limit, overtake or park where they shouldn\'t etc etc. I think we all have done at least one of those things - do people laugh at us if we\'re busted for the latter examples, and they\'re potentially far more serious than relaxing with a bunch of like-minded folks in the middle of an ocean?
2. You should know as purportedly a member of the scene that most of us will be more than sympathetic to those busted in such a way, so why come out with what you said and not expect repercussions? Yes, dave does a great job of moderating this board, allowing people to voice their opinions without fear of censorship, but we are careful what we say; most of us would self-moderate what we say so as not to upset others. This is an open board, which can be read by the public aka members of the scene trying to pick up on new bands. No-one wants to know about a band whose hard-core fans laugh at the misfortunes of others. In short, whatever you may have felt, it was suicide to voice it out loud, so you can\'t expect there to be no consequences.
3. Anyone who posts regularly to the board will know that a lot of ball-busting goes on here, most of it friendly and none of it malicious. Don\'t take it to heart, joe; far better to use humour to reply, rather than to petulantly tell people to grow up.
On the other hand, however, and this is a message to everyone, I think the point has been made - yes, Joe definitely acted like a jackass, consciously or not - but then haven\'t we all? I think it\'s time to move on and draw a line under this.
-
get a life man...think about it,whats funny about good folks getting busted on a party boat?nothing funny about it if you ask me..and you wonder why everyone thinks your the epitome of toolness..i,for one, kinda like you..i question your opinions at imes, and i think you act like a baby quite often, but we all do here and there...its tiem to grow up and face the fact that your not akid anymore..people getting pinched for partying is not funny...the folks who sell the ****,on the other hand, deserve what they get..
-
You know what? **** all of you. A lot of you I like, but most of you have been nothing but cruel and unwelcoming. I say this now, it will be the small, ignorant, snotty ass hole fan base that will prevent this band from growing. Timmy Palms take note of this...
-
i wish "absolutely"was an option on the poll....
peck,dont even think about it..
duane,act your freaking age oldtimer!!yea!!!!
-
This is by far the most childish thing I\'ve seen on this board. Duane, seriously get a life. What are you 40 something? Act your **** age. Dave moderate this, I\'ve done nothing to deserve this.
-
this ballot is misleading, I demand a recount.

Ugh.
-
ok.. you need to clarify the poll... if the question is "Is the jamcruise situation funny?" then I would have to say no. If the question is is Joe being a jackass...,. well.. then.....
-
No.
Well, the one thing that could *maybe* be found humourous is the amount of pot and **** in the bathroom trash cans. Unfortunately I don\'t think the janitors got much of it though; the police were all over it from what I hear.
Being there, I can say that it was much more scary than funny. Particularly when we heard they were planning on bringing dogs on the boat. Can you imagine what a disaster that would have been? I can\'t imagine sitting listening to this ridiculous jazz jam of musicians from various bands, at 2 am, drunk as can be and having a grand old time, and then seeing cops bust in dogs. That would have been a really frightening scene.
-
just curious
-
thanks for the on scene account joc. i\'ve followed this story diligently since it became public with mixed feelings of digust and horror. just curious, but did you in ANY way find this to be "funny"?
-
For the love of all that\'s still good on this earth SHUT THE HELL UP FRED!
The reason people thought they could all bring stuff on board was because the previous 2 years anything went basically. This year, due to sellout boats the past 2 years, they went for a way bigger (like twice as big) boat and booked with Carnival. The size of the affair was so big that apparently DEA was all over it.
I was lucky and got a little bit of a heads up. Having lost my passport the night before at a show in Jacksonville, I was all freaked out and was pacing around my hotel at about 3AM when I ran into someone who was working on the boat and asked him if there was any way I could get on without a passport. He told me what to do and mentioned that there would be all kinds of drug dogs and security. Josh and I laughed that one off.
When we got to the port the next AM, there were about 10 million police officers, Sheriff cars, etc. scarin the heck out of everyone. But we proceeded through the lines, gave them our info, got our passes and little money burning plastic cards etc... Finally, when we were almost through the line, we called a friend to see if there was anything shady to deal with when getting on the boat... since thus far it had been smooth sailing.... he said to pitch whatever we had because one of our other friends had just gotten nabbed. So we did. Adios to 9 grams or so of various delicious varieties that we had been saving up for the cruise.... *sigh*
Anyhow at the front of the line they checked through your info one more time, then took a picture of you under a big arch that said JAMCRUISE 2005 or something like that. So you\'re all smiling and psyched, ready for sailin... you walk around the corner, and BLAMO! Helllooooo Fido. Those were some powerful-nosed dogs; they could smell pot on my clothes from smoking in the hotel room earlier that morning. So we were detained for a while and then let on the ship. One of my unlucky friends got his manhood jiggled around just from having smoked in the car on the way over.
All in all, a whole bunch of people weren\'t allowed on the boat, but only about 15 were arrested. The rest had their charges dropped. Poor suckers, no arrest, and no cruise. Some of these fellas called Carnival who told them that if they flew to Freeport they could get on the boat there. So 14 people bought one way tickets to the Bahamas for 700 bucks only to be told they couldn\'t get on the ship. Shame.
No band members were arrested. STS9 and the other band (I forget who it was) rumored on here to have not played did in fact play. However, Karl Denson\'s sound guy was busted.
There were party favors to be had, but they were quite tough to come by. Most people pitched what they had when they heard tell of the dogs. There was virtually no good pot on that boat. Pretty much everything that made it by the dogs was the crummy stuff that doesn\'t smell like anything. We got some, but by the last night we were giving it away because it was starting to taste really gross.
As far as other drugs go, LSD was pretty plentiful and molecule was around as well. Pretty much anything else was impossible to find. People were holding on to everything with clenched fists.
For the record Joe, I did not see one single person who was tripping or rolling or whatever who caused any sort of a problem. Unless you consider their wearing sunglasses and having a good time watching the fog and seafoam to be a problem. The only waste-azoids that I saw on the boat were drunk ****. They\'re much worse 99% of the time than someone on some sort of hallucinogen.
The biggest scam was the raid that was planned for the end of the cruise. The last night on board, we all got little pieces of papers that said that the boat would be docking early, at 1 AM (instead of like 7AM,) due to weather conditions. In tiny little letters at the bottom it said Reminder: Once docked the ship will no longer be in international waters. All US laws will be applicable. We found this to be rather curious.
Later that night at the Pursur\'s office (I needed more money in my account, I had only had maybe 5 beers and 3 rum punches thus far ;) ) and the very friendly fellow working there told me (very quietly) to be careful because they were planning on bringing dogs on board the ship once docked, somewhere between 1 and 2 am. This would have been a very bad situation seeing as there was music until like 4 am, so people were still partying it up. This never ended up happening though, because we hit such heavy fog that they had to drop anchor way out in international waters. They weren\'t able to get the boat to back to shore until late Mon morning. Causing us to miss our flight of course. :)
That\'s about it.

for the love of all thats still good on this earth GET A ROOM!!!!

No arguments here. I was kinda thinking that it was a case of---these 12 cats looked nervous as hell and security picked up on it. The way rumours fly, who the hell knows???

i go to shows just to strap on major buzzes.the band is merely background music to me........

Duane I agree with Marcial, I\'m not paying a **** load of money (ala Jamcruise) just so I can be a babysitter. I\'m sorry, but I\'m not part of the hippie generation. I agree with you that "big brother" is getting closer and closer everyday to having a full grip on the American citizen\'s nutsack, but its been like this since the start of this country, and I doubt it will change. I still think it\'s funny, mainly because of my personal disdain for a scene that I used to love, but grew to hate MAINLY due to (A. the out of control crowds. (B. The music progresively getting worse and worse, due to drug use (ala phish,Bisco). So as a music lover/consumer I feel I have every right to comment on the state of what\'s going on. SOme of those cats had some rough ****, yay, H etc.....
If I\'m at a show to ENJOY myself the last thing I want to do is have to fuse my professional life into that moment, which is supposed to be recreational!!! So you can act like a 5 year old and call me a jack ass all you want. I still stick to it being the funniest story of the year...

Don\'t worry, won\'t make that mistake again. Next time, it will be no beers with fungus for me!! Still have some left, which I think I will bring to the Barbara Streisand concert (as he sends the feds on a wild goose chase)

No, not that one. This was at the Woodstock reunion. Mental note---don\'t drink a **** load of beer all day and eat killer fungus at 10 at night. (same fungus though)

Walkin\' in the dark in unknown territory w/ shady sandals can be tricky.

Hell, I\'m a veteran twice over and this past summer I made a mistake and had an "issue" of my own. I thank god that there were a couple really cool folk to hang with me for a bit and make sure I lived to see another day. This "me, me, me" society has got to go!!!

Here is my take on helping people at shows. If they look really bad or scared I will of course try to help them(we\'ve all been there) but if they are going to be a dick than that is there problem. Most of those "KIDZ" wouldn\'t give 2 **** if I was tweeking so f\'em if they don\'t want help. There is only so far I will go to help a complete stranger that obviously doesn\'t want it. If someone accepts help then I am down to get that kindred soul thru it, but if they are a dick, it is one chance and one chance only. I am there to see a show that I paid money for. Obviously if it were a Breakfast show I would know almost everyone or try to get to before hand, and it would be a diff story but at a random show with some stranger if you aren\'t going to let me help and are going to draw attention or make a scene then sorry brah, I tried. PLUS, at most shows some people are trying to wade thru their own states of mind(i.e. myself) not really a time when you want to worry about someone else\'s...but hey I\'m all for helping out a brotha in need.
-
I\'ll tell ya I KNOW i was a stupid punk kid @ 14 when I first took acid and saw GD. If it were not for some very very kind people I most likely would have ended up naked wandering the hills of Irvine blabbering as the sun rose. As it ended up I was clothed and was with new friends wandering the hills of Irvine:)
-
sheeeesh....noone said anyone has to deal with someone acting like an ****.....just that we should watch out for someone who finds themselves a bit over the edge and that we should watch out for the young ones who might have gotten in over their heads.

The only thing I find funny haha abt this is how many people are surprised that something like this happened. I mean does no one remember Summer 1991 GD tour when the DEA rumours (which proved to be true ) started? Does anyone remember that a little thing called The Patriot Act is in all actuality not that small ?
Come on Duane it sux for those people 4 sure but they had to know. The small amt of people busted shows me that most people gettin\' on this boat knew something may go down and either took precautions/got lucky/ or decided to see what appeared out @ sea( the tact i would probably take) and the ones that did not get rid of their stuff as it was going down were not paying attention.
From what i have read some of those people flew down to the Bahamas in an attempt to rejoin the cruise. Not knowing the local law where they were popped I would say min. jail time /max fine would most likely be the end result which sux yeah but it seems some of these people were not bothered enough by what happened to them to stop them from trying to rejoin the party. I have a feeling some may have their felonies reduced but the ones w/ heroin or coke bye bye.

Just wanted to clarify my previous post in the light of other posters:
As freddie and duane have said, this is not funny at all - I just wanted to try to lighten things up a bit with my beer and Hits comment. I personally have never ingested or smoked any type of recreational chemistry, but have no beef at all with those who wish to - have even been known to help out a brother who couldn\'t roll any more. When it comes down to it, it\'s your head/lungs etc.
And in answer to Joe: "If I\'m going to pay 40 bucks to see a band I don\'t want some schizoid trying to convince me that JFK is growing out of my forehead..." , why not just help the guy out? It\'ll only mean talking some **** to him for a few minutes, something some people are known to do quite regularly here. ;)

just happy my friend got on ... called him on the boat during life preserver drills he had a kick ass group - karl denson, claypool, magner and brownie from the biscuits and a few others whose names escape me at the moment

Any member of a band that got busted is truly a dumbass. That is what roadcrew and management is for. Wanta be a Rockstar? Nvr carry your own drugs!

Leith I agree with you that there were probably lots of party.favors on the boat. Going into the transpersonal psychology frield I\'ve discovered that the use of psychedelics, hallucinogens, frequencies (which are legal) or any other mind altering substance are best used in private. The way the "hetty" culture glamorizes drug use is sad. Personally I\'ve had it with users at show and don\'t feel any sympathy for them. If I\'m going to pay 40 bucks to see a band I don\'t want some schizoid trying to convince me that JFK is growing out of my forehead...
I personally love to smoke pot @ shows and willing to share with anyone. I realize i run the risk of havin\' my stash confiscated(except in most Ca. venues as I have a little card that acts as a big wall security usually does not want to climb.) I also like to expand my mind everyonce in awhile w/ fungus @ shows the major difference is I can handle my trip w/o bugging others. It\'s the kids that have no clue what they are doing and the fact I mentioned b4 no one there to help them through.

The part of the story you guys missed was all the **** people threw out when word came down the line. Yes, I\'m sure a fair amount got in. ie: oven baking bags. Can\'t beat \'em!!
Veterans will always find a way!
Oysterhead Hollywood Palladium a few yrs back. Tight ass security w/ metal detectors, had you pull your wallet out and went through it as you held it. The wands the patdown, the fuckin\' whole shabang. Get in sit down in the middle of the floor and begin excising my stash, look nxt to me and some dude is doing the same. We look @ each other and start laughing. Had a great show. Vets will not be denied!

Yeah, those Cuban janitors are having a field day right now....

Joe a little tact goes a loooong way. I totally agree that the people busted shoulda known better. One of the reasons I will nvr step on a jamcruise unless I own the boat. I find the fact that the amt of people busted being so low amazing. I am sure that boat is packed w/ party favors galore though. I also agree that drug use @ concerts is gettin\' outta hand but I attribute that to the lack of "family " feel that has been lost. No one looks out after really **** up people anymore it seems. Now people just laugh or worse make fun of people not doing well w/ whatever they ingested.

Why was my post stupid? They deserved what they got. If I was on jamcruise the last thing I would want is a bunch of spun out e-tards bumping into me while I\'m trying to enjoy the music. The scene needs to be clean. Save your drug use for IN PRIVATE!!! If this country ever wants to progress to the legalization of narcotics the public has to demonstrate they can act responsibly. The people I see at shows DO NOT act responsibly therefore causing more security to be hired, more attention from public safety, and more pissed off music lovers who don\'t feel the need to be on yay to enjoy the natural vibrancy high from music. Yes, it sucks a lot of the pot users were arrested, but that was THEIR decision to try to break the law. Again, funniest story of the year....

Only 12 got arrested do you know how much still got on...that is why my buddies only went last year bc of how much of a free for all it was they knew this year would be diff. Don\'t be nonchalant at the \'Roo this year either if you go...always be careful.

Barstools!!! Bet those poor sods didn\'t get a refund on their tix either. Watch out guys - no more Hits From The Bong on TT - can\'t be too careful.
At least, for most of us beer seems to be the vice of choice and they can\'t stop us having that anywhere - oops, sorry Drew, maybe they can in some places! ;) Oh for UK drinking age laws in the US - 16 with a meal and 18 in a bar for anything alcoholic, beer or spirits.
