I understand that everyone is all high and mighty on the New Haven pizza and with good right to, but I\'d like to inject some great Jersey pizza if I may

Ralph\'s Pizza - Nutley
Nellie\'s Place - Waldwick
Pete & Elda\'s - Neptune
Kinchley\'s - Ramsey
Sawmill - Seaside Heights

You can go to any of these place and get great pie and not have to wait more than 10 minutes to get a table.

yeah but then you\'d have to go to jersey and who wants to do that? ;)

i\'ve eaten at "the spot" twice in the last two weeks and it was so on the money it was silly. the only issue seems to be whether there will be clams or not. BAR was really good last night as well.

dave is prouder of the reservation capabilities he now possesses than a elementary school kid is bringing in some new toy on the first day back from winter vacation for show and tell.

naturally, we\'re all still jealous.

I\'m guessing August or September, whichever has a more badass New Haven show planned.  I haven\'t been out there in almost a year.

Hats off to Sally\'s Apizza, which today celebrates its 70th year of producing and serving the best pizza that ever graced one\'s palate.
Yay New Haven Pizza!

I still haven\'t tried Sally\'s.  I\'m probably gonna be out there in the next month or two and will have to see what I have missed on all my previous trips to New Haven.

Speaking of pizza, go to Jimmy\'s in Milford on New Haven Ave.   The Speciality Pizza "Danielle" will blow you away.  Order it as toxic, if you are brave.  And maybe if you are lucky, Danielle will actually be your waitress.

is that the place where holly/gavin got that gross looking grease pie from on sunday??

confirm?

Carinis is hit or miss the last few years. I still get it periodically and sometimes it\'s just like i remember it as a kid, fantastic. Other times however, :pukedon:

I\'d much rather just drive to new haven and get something decent though than hit anything up here these days though.

Hats off to Sally\'s Apizza, which today celebrates its 70th year of producing and serving the best pizza that ever graced one\'s palate.

Ironically, 70 years is also the amount of time it usually takes to get served (well, 80 years if you\'re Wolfman), but I\'ve heard about a recent occasion in which reservations were made, the pizza was served prompty, and some New Yorkers from our lovely website (aka: PennyRedstar and fizzlefest) were reportedly blown away, particularly by the plain with garlic.

Yay New Haven pizza!

This is from this thread in June 2003 (first-round action):

#1 Modern def. #16 BAR 5-4
#9 Sally\'s def. #8 Brazzi\'s 9-0

there you have it. sally\'s was a landslide, while the other matchup was extremely close. in fact, BAR actually took 2 out of the 3 subcategories (dough, sauce, cheese), but Modern squeezed out the overall victory.

Modern went on to lose to Sally\'s, which eventually lost a 6-5 decision to Pepe\'s in the final. Both the Modern-BAR and the Sally\'s-Pepe\'s matches were controversial due to oven/heating/burning/cooling issues. It was problems like these that led to the demise of the tournament and the subsequent restoring of lives for all participants.

Now THAT\'S the in-depth analysis I\'m talking about!  What a tough draw for BAR.  We really should do this again with an updated field, as well as a pie with one veggie topping and a pie with one meat topping from each competitor.

Ah of course, the topping tournament.  Good idea.  The on-premise tourney would not have to involve eating at both places in one night.  The 1-10 scoring allows you to record scores over time.

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana did in fact beat Sally\'s Pizza 6-5 Sunday night to win the 2003-04 SuperHaven Apizza Tournament. That means over a four-match span Pepe\'s earned the majority of votes against its opponents, one of which is the best pizza places in Staven, and another that is considered by many to be the best in the world. Not an easy feat. So congratulations to Pepe\'s!

Those who voted for Pepe\'s: Tim, Lisa, Justin, Jay, Mike, Adrian D
Those who voted for Sally\'s: Me, Ron, Seth, Adrian T, Dave

The sauce: Sally\'s 8-3
The cheese: Pepe\'s 6-5
The dough: Pepe\'s 6-5

For the record, there were no remaining slices of the six bad pizzas. However, they weren\'t perfect and there were some problems. At the places, there\'s perfection and no problems. Like waiting in line at both Sally\'s and Pepe\'s on a Sunday, huh, Wonder Bread Wolf?

The Tournament could always be elaborated. Of course, there\'s always toppings to consider. Then again, I\'m all for never doing another Tournament. Instead, we could eat pizza and use words to convey our thoughts.

There needs to be another apizza contest, we cannot just stop here forever.  I have 2 ideas:

1.  Do the entire Superhaven contest again, with new seeds, and this time do it on-premise.  Rank dough, cheese, sauce, service, and overall 1-10 since you don\'t have both pies at the same time.  You\'ll still know which was better even if you eat the pies an hour apart.

2.  The AAA tourney: Little Italy (Deli), Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John\'s, DePalma\'s and any other apizza places that weren\'t in the first tournament.  If there aren\'t 16 spots filled, throw in store pizza like DiGiorno\'s and Uno\'s.

A great time, but a big letdown from the supposed heavyweights.  Definitely the worst pie I have ever had from both Sally\'s AND Pepe\'s, I\'m sure most would agree.  Who would\'ve guessed that?  The Sally\'s tasted like cardboard box to a lot of people and seemed thicker and gummier than usual.  The 3 Sally\'s pies were very inconsistent.  The Pepe\'s was cold and the cheese was crispy.  That is just wrong.  The last Pepe\'s was dry as a desert, with no sauce and charred cheese.  It was actually bad.  People wouldn\'t even eat it.  Sally\'s and Pepe\'s on an off night is still better than most other apizza though.  (Although that last Pepe\'s was actually bad.)  I voted Sally\'s on all categories but didn\'t mind seeing them lose.  I thought it was funny how everyone was saying "Well, if we went to the places we would get perfect pies and there would be no problems..."  I\'ve been saying to do the contests on-premise since the beginning!  Poker and hi-def Sox-Yankees was great too.  Thanks everyone!

I\'m taking a train 100 miles for this!  May the best pie win!  Much as I love walking out of Sally\'s loaded with pies and making all the customers drool, I think it is best if I do not pick up the pies, unless everyone wants to pay double.  You know, now that I think about it, I was the one who picked up the $19 large mooz from Tony and Lucille\'s in the first round.  Perhaps they were on to me as well?

Don\'t forget that this Sunday at approximately 7:30 PM we will have the final of the SuperHaven Apizza Tournament featuring Wooster St. heavyweights Sally\'s and Pepe\'s in a one-time taste-test cage match to see who has the best pizza in the New Haven area.

Sally\'s has earned a 9-0 win over Brazzi\'s, a 5-2 victory against Modern, and a 5-2 triumph versus Grand to reach the championship.

Pepe\'s knocked off Tony and Lucielle\'s 8-1, then downed Staven Apizza Champion Giuseppe\'s 4-3, followed by a 6-2 trouncing of Olde World to make it here.

Should be classic. If you\'ve particpated in any of these rounds, going back to when we had 16 places in contention last year, you are required to attend. If you\'re a tournament rookie and want to participate, please verify such with Dave and then go. Cigarette smokers are inelgible.

See yous there

No Paul, it\'s not my typical sarcasm. We did have the final last night, it ended in a deadlock, and it\'s on Seth, one of the tournament\'s most steadfast supporters, to determine who has the best apizza in the SuperHaven area, and arguably the world.

And next week, we\'re starting the SuperDakota Tournament, matching the 64 elite apizza establishments of North and South Dakota against each other in a taste-bud extravaganza. There\'s this place, I think it\'s called Mama Tony\'s Italian Pizza, near Mount Rushmore that makes a ridiculous peppers and onions. So I hear.

In other words, be there the 25th!

You know what the only problem with Superhaven apizza is?  Once you\'ve had it a few times, all other apizza starts to suck.  A lot.  It\'s not a problem if you live in the Superhaven area, you can just keep on chowin\'.  But for people like me who visit a lot but live elsewhere, apizza is ruined.  New York City is supposed to have good apizza.  In the last 4 months I have had all 3 NYC chains twice (at 2 different locations), as well as a host of independent apizzerias and delis.  Some are better than others, but I really don\'t get off on any of them.  I don\'t rate any one of them higher than a 5.  Even the nice sit-down apizza restaurants have to have a stellar night to get a 7.  Had I never discovered the wonders of Superhaven apizza, I would have found all of this apizza to be just fine.  But now I don\'t like it.  I suppose this is good for health reasons.  However, I have to say that the joys of Superhaven apizza are balanced out by the depreciation in apizza enjoyment outside of Superhaven.

You should try Trackside Pizza in Wallingford if you want great pizza and a great experience.  Quick service, friendly owners and waiters, and excellent selection of beverages because their family owns foxon park. And on top of everything else you get to eat inside of antique train car. The pizza is great too. When you factor everything in its my favorite pizza place just barely beating sallys. Plus you can go to trackside and know that  by the time you get out of there the night is not almost over.

Maybe it\'s the Red Sox fan in me, but I find it kinda boring when overwhelming favorites win all the time.  Who knows, it\'s not over, maybe Sally\'s will lose, but the Wolf line has Sally\'s at -210 right now.

What about the box category?

BTW a proposition for the Final Four:  The Final Four should be conducted ON-PREMISE and service should be an included and counted category.  Even if you eat the pizzas 1 hour apart, it\'s easy to know which is better.
Title: FINALLY THE FINAL FOUR!!!
Post by: ChrisPitch on March 11, 2004, 11:15:38 pm
What a night.

Wooster Street powerhouse Pepe\'s dodges a scare from Staven Champion Guiseppe\'s and wins 4 to 3. Guiseppe\'s wins the seperate dough category 4-3 while Pepe\'s takes both sauce and cheese 5-2. For Guiseppe\'s, a great pie and a worthy effort. For Pepe\'s, actually an off night, which says a lot considering they still won. They received all four of my votes.

Then, in a nightcap battle of New Haven middleweights, Grand beats Wooster Street\'s Abate\'s 5-2, sweeping all three side categories 5-2. I thought both were average I voted for Abate down the line. I\'ve now gone against Grand both times they\'ve won, the first being an upset over Staven runner-up John & Maria\'s in the first round.

THE FINAL FOUR

Sally\'s vs. Grand
Pepe\'s vs. Olde World

Three New Haven\'s, including two Wooster\'s, plus one Cinderella North Haven pizzeria. Possible Sally\'s vs. Pepe\'s final? Should be interesting.

Thanks to Lisa, Lisa, Dave, Tim, Mike and Jay for judging with myself, thanks to Ron and Adrian for serving, and special thanks to Ron and Lisa for hosting, marking the first time the venue was switched from Dave and Lisa\'s Staven abode on the south side a Foxon. Clearly, with the matchup being held in New Haven, Pepe\'s had home-table advantage over Guiseppe\'s. It\'s all politics.

unfortunately after tonight, we\'re looking at another 6 weeks before the final four kicks off, since the band will be away. during that time, i\'ll be taking a pizza hiatus of my own, as i\'m in need of a break (especially from sally\'s, who, as wolfman stated above, has been less than stellar as of late).

Post by: Wolfman on March 08, 2004, 10:53:24 pm
All I have to say is **** SALLY\'S.  These **** pizans charged me $36 for a large mooz and onion and a medium plain last night.  A medium plain is $7...so the large is $26?  I\'m equally mad at myself for not realizing it until later, but they did it and they did it on purpose because they know that I am not a freakin guinny.  Meanwhile, Frankenstein the waiter just HAD to shoulder check me and Mike 3 times apiece.  I\'m still sore from picking up the Super Bowl pies...6 checks that day, I got hit more than Tom Brady.  Oh yeah, and they randomly took the phone off the hook, so we had to go down there just to make a take-out order which took them 2 hours and 15 minutes to make.  There is no other pizza place on earth that a) takes 2.25 hours to do a take-out order b) takes the phone off the hook for no reason c) has a waiter who forcibly commits perverted and rough homosexual contact upon all customers and d) charges you double for being a Jew.  The quality of the pizza does not atone for all of these sins, especially with so many other fantastic apizza establishments on the same street.  Go to hell Sally\'s!

QUARTERFINALS

GRAND vs. ABATE\'S

SEMIFINALS

Sally\'s vs. Grand/Abate winner

Well, believe it or not, the 2003-04 SuperHaven Apizza Tournament continues Sunday, March 7 at Dave Pec\'s house at 5 p.m. We will be doing two quarterfinal matches, after which we will hold the Final Four at a later date.

On Sunday, Grand will face Abate in a matchup of New Haven establishments. The winner faces Sally\'s in the semis.

Also, Wooster Street\'s own, Pepe\'s, will take on 2002-03 Staven Apizza champion Guiseppe\'s. The winner of that match faces North Haven power Olde World Brick Oven in the semifinals. It should be noted that Guiseppe\'s actually lost to fellow Staven heavyweight Paul\'s in the first round, but that match was wiped from the books when Paul\'s went out of business between rounds. So Guiseppe\'s got another crack at the first round and beat Main Street Apizza, another Staven place, to advance.

So that\'s it: Grand vs. Abate\'s and Pepe\'s vs. Guiseppe\'s with the winners to the Final Four. Sunday. At Dave\'s. Around 5. Hope to see as many people there as possible. Our goal is to finish pre-Sopranos at 9. I expect that we will. Results to follow.

dollar for dollar, The Deli aka Little Italy\'s pizza is good.
$10 for a large with any amount of toppings!!! I\'ve never seen that before this place, and it\'s pretty good.  I\'d suggest the chicken & broccoli red or white, or pepperoni & meatball if you don\'t mind a little grease.  Experiment!  I got John & Maria\'s literally around the corner from me so I don\'t make too many stops unless I\'m in momouguin.

my personal new addiction is John & Maria\'s white spinach and garlic.  Generally, I think they make better of the \'white\' variety than the \'red\' (w/ sauce) and sometimes they\'ve been known to burn a pie whcih proabably happens kinda easlity it being a thin crust...I as well as Pitchy can see the place from our houses so it\'s aways been a staple for me (try the steak and cheese subs too).

yesterday was certainly "No Tolerance Pizza Day", and i had voted on several occasions throughout the day to remove T&L\'s completely from the tournament due to their \'holier than thou\' behavior... no one wanted to listen though, and we ended up with a $19 shitpie.

was a successful day overall, though i wish we could have done 4 matchups instead of only 3 (which technically we could have, but people were hungry and wanted to double up for 2 extra pies during Round 2)..

good turnout, but if these pies had toppings, they would have been sausage (our first all-male pizza turnout - what\'s up with that??)... props to Freddie for taking the Designated Server position like a man, having fun, and doing a hell of a job at it.

Well, all I have to say is my nizzle is throughly shizzled after 8 large pizzas between 11 people, all blindfolded!  Six different places!  Pitchie, get in here with the statistical analysis please.  I can\'t believe how much fun that was.  Not to mention all of the football and PB videos.  I think my mind may have been slightly skewed when I was the only one to vote for Tony and Lucille\'s over Pepe\'s, but honestly I thought they both kinda sucked.  The T+C crust was like a piece of matzah (gross), but Pepe\'s crust was as chewey as most gum and squirted grease as you chewed it (gross).   Sauce I gave to Pepe\'s, cheese went to T+C, so it was pretty much a toss-up.  I was disappointed with Pepe\'s, but I would still like to go there.  You will NEVER catch me at T+C\'s paying $19 a pie for that crapola.  See the burp thread for comments on that.  Can\'t wait for the next round.

Title: STAVEN APIZZA CHAMPION TAKEN OUT
Post by: ChrisPitch on July 21, 2003, 09:01:19 am
More first-round action of the 2003 SuperHaven Apizza Tournament took place at Dave Pec\'s on Sunday. We had ten people in attendance. Nine judges. One server. That would be me, sitting out my two-match suspension for (correctly) guessing the pizza places I voted for in the two previous first-round matches and displaying the guesses on my vote sheet.
My feelings on this matter have already been documented.

So this gave me a chance to serve the pizza, which provided me with a golden opportunity to tamper. Oddly, I opted not to tamper. I stuck to the plan, dished out the slabs, and away we go.

PAUL\'S DEFEATS GIUSEPPE\'S 7 to 2

Giuseppe\'s, which shocked many a Foxoner with its Cinderella run to victory in the 2002 Staven Tournament, was promptly bounced from the major leagues by Paul\'s, a fellow Stavener, and better yet, a Momauguin Stavener. Paul\'s also posted a strong showing in the Staven Tournament, blowing out supposed Main Street heavyweight Tolli\'s, then losing to eventual runner-up John and Maria\'s, which has yet to have its first-round match in this tournament. Anyway, seven of the nine judges felt that, overall, Paul\'s produced a better pie. I agreed. It was my favorite of the night. I am a Foxoner, but show no geographical bias when it comes to apizza. These are two of my favorites.
In the side statistics, Giuseppe\'s won the dough category and Paul\'s won the sauce and cheese categories.
Giuseppe\'s now has an overall record of 3-1 with a vote total of 20-10.
Paul\'s has an overall record of 2-1 with a vote total of 17-8.

ABATE\'S DEFEATS PERROTTI\'S 7 to 2

A matchup between two Wooster Street dark horses turned into a laugher. This was the first tournament appearance for either of these places. I had never eaten either of them and liked Abate\'s much better. So did everyone else as they won big overall and swept the dough, sauce and cheese categories. For the record, I had Perrotti\'s as a 5-1 favorite to win the tournament and Abate\'s as a 40-1 favorite. So much for word of mouth. Still, Perrotti\'s, while hardly a bad pizza, was my least favorite of the night. And that\'s the point of the tournament: places that are average by comparison are good nonetheless.

Although, to be honest, Perrotti\'s has to come up with something a little better if it expects to make it on that street.

But hey, I\'m no restauranter.

Chris Pitch

For the record...

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS

Modern 5, BAR 4
Sally\'s 9, Brazzi\'s 0
Paul\'s 7, Giuseppe\'s 2
Abate\'s 7, Perrotti\'s 2

FIRST-ROUND MATCHES

John and Maria\'s vs. Grand
Pepe\'s vs. Amity
Zuppardi\'s vs. Olde World
Spot vs. Tony and Lucielle\'s

QUARTERFINAL MATCHES

Sally\'s vs. Modern
Abate\'s vs. John and Maria\'s/Grand winner
Paul\'s vs. Pepe\'s/Amity winner
Zuppardi\'s/Olde World winner vs. Spot/Tony and Lucielle\'s winner

As always, it was a great time. Thanks to Dave, Tim, Justin, Aruny, Paul, Christine, Mike, Jackie and Jay.

Hope to see everyone again and more

Yes, Antonio\'s does make a tobacco pizza.  If you ask for it "with extra veggies", they give you the secret shaker that looks like it has Italian spices, but it\'s actually cannibis flakes.  (It\'ll cost you an extra five bucks.)  The kids love it.

Hey Fred

I think it\'s a great idea. You should do the exact same tournament match-ups as us and see if it comes out the same, to see if great apizza is great apizza across the board, to see if the palate is actually "negatively affected" as so they claim. Pizza tournaments are obviously infectious to everyone so I fully understand your desire to get involved. I\'m with it.

Say, what say you guys have a side tournament in which you compare the pizzas with cigarettes cooked in. C\'mon, wouldn\'t a nice slice of Sally\'s plain go great with a **** Salem 100? Or Pepe\'s with a Doral? Or Domino\'s with a clove? I think Antonio\'s in Mass makes the tabacco-stuffed crust, but only if you get it with fried bumblebees and an Atari 7800 controller.

But Fred, if you guys need a server, I\'m obviously available.

Hello everybody

The judging works like this:

We all eat a slice of each and vote for which tasted better overall. Whoever gets the most of these votes wins and moves on. But we also, for no reason other than statistics, judge which of the two places has the best sauce, the best dough and the best cheese. This way, at the end of the tournament, you could say something like Sally\'s (just for an example) won the tournament. But they also had a sauce record of 44-5, a cheese record of 38-11, etc. This way we know why certain places win or lose. But you\'re right. The sum is more important that the parts. Even though BAR won 2 of 3, Modern\'s apizza won because it had the ingredients come together better and that was what stimulated enough taste buds and gave Modern my vote and the victory. But BAR needn\'t be ashamed. They made a great pie. It was as tight  a decision as I\'ve had to make (involving pizza anyway) and was a great contest between two of the area\'s heavyweights. Now Modern vs. Sally\'s in the quarterfinals. Whew.

Anyway, thanks for taking an interest.

Chris Pitch

By the way, regarding my suspension....

BULLSHIT
MOOSEDUNG
KANGAROOMANURE
RHINOFECES
PANDADOODY
RATCRAP
GUPPIEPOO

In other words, an utter outrage. Ah, it\'s all politics. Thank Maturo for that one. By the way Dave, who voted in favor of me, knowing that my suspension would not be warranted since I was simply showing off my ginzo expertise, and not displaying bias since I obviously have just one ass.

Pitch

PS-I cannot verify this, but there are rumors circulating that the Nicotine Smokers Union of Staven will be sponsering their own tournament to "rival" ours. Can anyone confirm or deny these reports that I plucked off the grapevine?

It is common knowledge that nicotine smokers are not allowed to judge in the tournament due to the fact that it "negatively affects their palate," according to Dave Pec, Hostmaster of the SuperHaven Apizza Tournament. Fortunately the Pot Smokers Union of Staven is allowed to judge, which is good considering that I don\'t think Dave and Lisa would have much fun judging by themselves. Plus, you need an odd number people, which we have in more ways than one.

See yous

Wolf your vote may be more pure than most votes out there, due to your non predetermined favorism of a particular pie.

Hey Dave..my fault.  I was in the city this weekend and sunday afternoon I was like..\'oh ****, how are they gonna have this first round without my Virginia Beach pie expertise"..so i called Tim and told him to tell you guys it\'s perfectly alright to continue without me, and im glad you did. Hope everything went smoothly, and may God watch over future rounds to guide us all in making good decisions and keeping the honesty and integrity in this tournament. Amen.  Aruny
Title: RESULTS
Post by: davepeck on June 23, 2003, 11:24:05 am
last night was the official kickoff of the tourney, blindfolds and all! pictures to come, but here are the results:

#1 Modern def. #16 BAR 5-4
#9 Sally\'s def. #8 Brazzi\'s 9-0

there you have it. sally\'s was a landslide, while the other matchup was extremely close. in fact, BAR actually took 2 out of the 3 subcategories (dough, sauce, cheese), but Modern squeezed out the overall victory.

with the band leaving for tour, we\'re looking to do the next round the day after my stag (7/20). looking to get an all-day thing going and knock out 4 rounds! stay tuned...

...and where were you last night, aruny??

Right and here\'s the rest since I accidentally sent:

Giuseppe\'s       10-1
BAR                  10-1
Olde World       25-1
Grand               30-1
Abate               40-1
Tony & Lucielle\'s 60-1
Amity               100-1
Brazzi\'s            200-1

A completely unbiased analysis based on previous eating experiences, word of mouth, and most important, difficulty of the random draw:

BRACKET A

1. Modern vs. 16. BAR
8. Brazzi\'s vs. 9. Sally\'s

5. Abate\'s vs. 12. Perrotti\'s
4. John & Maria\'s vs. 13. Grand

BRACKET B

6. Pepe\'s vs. 11. Amity
3. Giuseppe\'s vs. 14. Paul\'s

7. Zuppardi\'s vs. 10. Olde World
2. Spot vs. 15. Tony & Lucielle\'s

The winners face each other in the championship. I\'m looking forward to it. Thanks again everybody.

I\'d like to send a shot out to everyone who helped with the drawing of the 2003 SuperHaven Apizza Tournament. I wish I didn\'t have to work, but I\'m glad the brackets are set, and I\'m pleased with the matchps. Thanks to Tim for being the MC, Dave for filling in the brackets, Aruny for the easel, Josh and Jess for hosting and letting us take the stage, and Adam Greenberg for taping the event, so that verifcation can be available if anyone somehow learning about this many years down the road finds it hard to believe that people actually did this.

So thanks and let\'s eat!

Just for fun, here\'s the odds on who will win the tournament and be declared, Best Pizza in the Immediate New Haven Area, which is loosely translated as Best **** Apizza in the World.

Here goes:

Sally\'s                 Even
Pepe\'s                 2-1
Spot                    3-1
Perrotti\'s             5-1
John & Maria\'s     6-1
Zuppardi\'s           6-1
Paul\'s                  7-1
Modern                8-1
Giuseppe\'s
