Absence of Grateful Dead clearly the biggest oversight.
Also they can include rap but not metal? Black Sabbath definitely belongs. I\'m sick of Metallica but they still seem like a logical fit for lifetime achievement. Trhrow in Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Slayer and maybe you have a list.

I think some of the soul and motown songs on there are actually pretty huge....

Blender should do that. It would be hilarious, they could have hot models holding the lists w/ a match under each list.

blah.
rolling stone needs to do a \'Top 50 Most Meaningless Rolling Stone Top 50 Lists Of All Time\'..

Aaaargh!! I concur, it sucks!!! Good to see a few bits of 60s psychedelia and some recognition for the sorely missed XTC, but most of it is awful. The writer is obviously aware only of VH1 and Golden Oldie shows and reads everything he believes in the mainstream music press.

Horrible song list...

I do have to say there are some fabulous songs on that list. But... Monkey Wrench by the Foo Fighters at number 26? etc etc... they can\'t possibly be ser

Gray my magazine is in the works.... I wish I had some capital to start it up with though. I already have some pretty sick interviews lined up and some decent writers on board, though I\'m always looking for new ones, so if anyone wants to be published shoot me a PM and we\'ll work out the details:)

Wot, no Dead???? :(
Also I have to concur with any posts disagreeing with Cobain\'s position. He wouldn\'t have even made the top 100 if he hadn\'t done us all a favour with a 12 bore. Greater than the doors, Who or janis?? Nowhere even close!!!
Also jimi is way above the Stones

My favorite Jimmy Smith albums are Unfinished Business and Groove Drops 3+1.
As far as Rolling Stone goes, I don\'t get too fired up over these lists. They\'re a great gimmic for selling magazines, not some "official" list that a lot of people think it is. Fame always wins out over musicianship too, because famous musicians, again, sell magazines, therefore Rolling Stone likes them better. As long as you\'ve got some huge list and a "special issue" ribbon on the cover, you\'re gonna sell more mags, so I don\'t put any stock in the lists.
Actually, what I do get out of them though, is discovering some good music lost in the middle of the lists. Like with the 500 best albums list a few months ago, I just used #300-500 as a guide to check out some groups I had never really considered before. That worked well.

Joc, I was fortunate enough to catch Jimmy Smith at the Blue Note a couple of years ago. It was him and Lou Donaldson on a double bill.....He is truly "The Master"
*drooooool*... you lucky bastard. Is he still around and playing? There are few people I would like to see more.
Jimmy Smith Live at Club Baby Grand- a must have. It\'s on Blue Note I believe. One of my all-time favorite versions of Sweet Georgia Brown.

Oh yeah... I didn\'t even notice them.. Just kind of scanned the list. Saw a few that I found rather dismaying and stopped paying attention...

Interesting article on RS, called "The death of Rolling Stone."

Its true.

booooooo

I agree... These lists sell magazines, thats the bottom line.
-
Yeah I guess you\'re right. But in that case, it couldn\'t be a 50 person list. There\'s just no way. You\'d need 100 slots at least. I mean, Miles, \'trane, Sonny Rollins, Corea, Monk, Jimmy Smith, Bird, Clarke, Louis Arm, Ella.... it would get HUGE if you had every type of music artist!

:thumbsup

oooh and I just noticed that The Band is 50 below Public Enemy and RunDMC.....Gimme a **** break.....
This list blows and so does Rolling Stone....
Lennon gets his own spot but Harrison and/or McCartney dont???????
Idiots!!!!
-
"artists" - Miles was an Artist. So I think they should have added "artists" from all genders.
-
Miles Davis? Wow, I assumed this was just a list of rock and roll bands. If it were to include jazz musicians, that would open a whole can of worms. Miles Davis certainly wouldn\'t be the one and only jazz artist on there!
-
THE WHO most definitely deserves a top-ten spot, c\'mon now!!
-
Also where is Miles Davis and Pink Floyd?
-
King, Buy Exile on Main Street and tell me that the Stones aren\'t a great band....

The Rolling Stones: Good tunes, but not a "great" band.
Aretha Franklin: Singing "Respect", originally an Otis Redding tune about women respecting their men... not exactly how it\'s thought of today.
U2: I don\'t like them. Maybe they belong on the list, but not ahead of Neil Young, The Doors, The Who and The Clash.
Nirvana: For the 1,000,000th time, WHAT DID KURT COBAIN DO?
Prince: Just the fact that he\'s not ahead of Nirvana...
Patti Smith: Apparently Rolling Stone needed an extra woman to make this list PC.
Oh yeah, AND WHERE IS THE GRATEFUL DEAD?

You never know.

Could be Sharin\' in a few years.....

Magzines are good if you have the following:
1. A very sucesful corporation with captial.
2. A magazine idea that has not been done and will appeal to a mass audience.
You will make very little profit and most likely just break even. Its a nice outlet for your company if you can afford it. Who knows, maybe one day it will be Relix who?

Lemme know when you are ready Gray, I will hit the phones and asphalt running to sell adspace...

It makes me want to start my own Magazine. Its not worth it in this day and age, though.
