whats the chances of boombox crossing the pond to see the breakfast at some point? we (meaning them other people) can put you up for a weekend. i hear breakfest is nice this time of your year.
Would love to do that, but with the current economic climate (have dodged redundancy twice in the last year), couldn\'t justify the air fare. :)
One day.... :wistful:

Not been around in a while, thoguh have been enjoying the Breakfast and Kung Fu shows put up on the archive and still live in hope of a European tour by Tim and the boys.
Anyway, couldn\'t not post to this thread and give a token representation from ol\' Blighty.
Greatest Band = Beatles. No competition. No discussion nor justification needed.
Greatest Live Band = Grateful Dead (and I never even saw them)
Greatest Band of the 80s AND 90s = Phish
Best Live Band I\'ve Ever Seen (and who produce damn good albums too) = Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams (and they are also running a close second in my next category, which is why I\'ve seen them 17 times in 2.5 years, which for a band based in NY is probably slightly excessive, even if they do come here twice a year.)
Favourite Band of All Time = Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship (And no, I don\'t include We Built This City era Starship, but I do include JS2000 and beyond, though I still prefer the Diana era to the current Cathy period.)
The Breakfast still features in my top 5 in all categories, alongside, depending on the category, bands like The Doors, Stackridge, Love, Strawbs, Pretty Things, Fairport Convention, Genesis and Umphreys, (Have I ever not been eclectic in my tastes?) though truth be told, the Circus aside, I tend to listen to more acoustic stuff these days like Andy McKee, Pierre Bensusan, Laurence Juber and the like.
-
a lot moreso than Huey Lewis and the News
-
this question is impossible to answer but i wonder why hasnt FZ been mentioned once ?!?
I thought the same thing just the other day. It wouldn\'t change my vote but I think he certainly deserves to be in the discussion.
-

-
that\'s two more than pink floyd, bodhisattva.
-
2 votes for Steely Dan ...
-
it\'s the Fu obviously...
-
well Phish hasn\'t done much anything special since that time either.
-
so the best band ever is taking a back seat to Kung Fu? I call nans.
There was a time I firmly and fully believed it was bfast. Times have changed though.
-
don\'t doubt the poll!
-
Not according to the poll....
the poll= truth!
-
Not according to the poll....
-
Sorry chip. Its Phish.
-
i personally think the grateful dead had really amazing studio outputs. like, a bunch of them.
-
yeah i dont know why i put talkingheads in the category...i think its cause the beatles were the only example i could think of and i needed to throw in another one...they are good though
-
Voted. There can be only one answer
-

-
Phish is just about the only jam band that could make a great album.
-
are you guys **** ser? Talking Heads are the ****, studio and live. and i also DISagree with Phish NOT being great in the studio. i sometimes prefer their studio ****.
stop not making sense, ds.
:yay:
-
yeah talking heads are terrible...
am i the only one who likes the talking heads.... a lot??
-
yeah talking heads are terrible... rubblebucket is like the reincarnation of that terrible ****
-
stop not making sense, ds.
-
Examples of top studio bands, but lacking live epicness: ...Talkingheads
exsqueeze me?
-
On a serious note, i put 2 things into consideration: Studio work and live work. I dont need to explain these categories - basically cutting edge, innovative, epic studio albums; and quality of live performances.
Examples of top studio bands, but lacking live epicness: The Beatles, Talkingheads etc
Examples of Top live bands, but lacking studio epicness: Phish, Breakfast, Grateful Dead, etc
Bands with the whole package (best bands ever): Pink Floyd, Zed Zeppelin, Radiohead, etc.
Bands which are borderline epic in both categories: Genesis/Phil Collins, David Bowie, The Doors, The Who, Rolling Stones
-
vote cast for m\'f\'in Breakfast !
-
Steely Dan it is then.
-
There you go!!! I could only do up to 12 choices and I just sifted through the ones that seemed to surface the most and a few other mentions...
-
Phish
Pink Floyd
Beatles
Zeppelin
GD
IMO
-
can we get a poll going here? is that still possible?
-
the roots. rap, rock, great live show... can\'t go wrong
-
Mott The Hoople
-
I think it took so long for floyd to be mentioned cuz no one really took this discussion seriously, esp since the opening post had Billy Corrigan and whatever **** band he fronts as an option.
-
I Vote Breakfast
-
Props ellis-d. Was wondering why Floyd took so long to pop up.
Zep
Floyd
Dead
Phish

I haven\'t posted in a while, but I couldn\'t refuse. How has nobody mentioned Pink Floyd??!?

I haven\'t posted in a while, but I couldn\'t refuse. How has nobody mentioned Pink Floyd??!? Talk about influence and grandeur and hits and epicness and everything else that goes with being the best. All I\'m saying is maybe they are, maybe they aren\'t but they should def be in the conversation......
And no matter what anyone says, it\'s Phish.
-

Bottom line is music is not a competition.
i agree.
someone\'s favorite band could be someone\'s least favorite. its all a matter of opinion. i hate when i post something on facebook and someone says "that bands sucks". Had that happen recently regarding the foo fighters.
-
all boils down to preference.
-
I hate topics like this because there of course isn\'t one correct answer. . How does one judge the "best" anyway?
Bottom line is music is not a competition. Look at any video on youtube of someone playing guitar, drums, etc. and you see assbags making comments about this guy sucks and that is better, etc. It\'s not what it\'s about.
-
this is one of those topics where everyone has their own opinion. it can\'t be pinpointed down.
in my heart, the greatest band ever.... i will always say The Beatles, because they shaped so much of my youth and me coming to love music at a young age.
Greatest band currently still touring? I say Wilco. I am sorry, but I have to. I have seen them every year for the last three. And their shows move me. literally. like my being and soul reaches places i didn\'t think it could. But then again, its only my opinion.
i like the cut of your jib,sweets..
thanks. ;)
although, after a little creepy stalking,i dig on y more in the green celtics shirt..
nah. that\'s not creepy stalking. ;)
you are allowed to friend me on facebook, you know. and there are almost too many pictures to stalk me with me on there.

Jimmy Page plays some sloppy guitar.
I\'m way better than he ever was.
Dude please.
It depends on what show / year you are listening to. Was he a mess on stage ? Sure but not always and when the band was on it was ON.
If you want to sit there thinking you have more skills than Jimi Page that is up to you but it is absurd.
Session work for the likes of
The Who
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
The Rolling Stones
Donovan
This is all before the Yardbirds or Led Zeppelin
I\'m sure the folks above thought he was sloppy and not worth the time or money. His work post 1975 when he was using Heroin was when the sloppiness really started showing up

Greatest rock n roll Band of all time ?
hmmmmm. Honestly I would have have to say Led Zeppelin.
I don\'t care if you think they didn\'t give enough $$ or credit to black musicians but pound for pound they are and continue to be the GREATEST ROCK N ROLL BAND ever to grace a stage
Close second would be the Grateful Dead. 2 totally different vibes tho and the Grateful Dead did it longer / and better then just about everyone.
Arguably the greatest front man ever = Robert Plant
Arguably the greatest rock n roll guitar player = Jimi Page (of course I like others but the argument could be made)
Arguably the greatest rock n roll bass/piano/etc etc player = John Paul Jones
Greatest Rock N roll Drummer = John Henry Bonham
These guys are Rock N Roll.
1975-02-14 Nassau Coliseum St. Valentines day
Quite possibly the best recording of Led Zeppelin I have ever heard. The show is EPIC. No Quarter is NASTY (possibly best ever)
-
I\'d like to say Zeppelin because they\'re my favorite band of all time, but I gotta say The Beatles. To me, they are responsible for basically everything.

There would be no Huey Lewis and the News w/o
the influence of GD. Huey saw Pigpen play and that was that.
True Story.

-
Huey Lewis and The News
"I think their undisputed masterpiece is \'Hip to be square,\' a song so catchy, people probably dont listen to the lyrics. But they should, because its not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends, its also a personal statement about the band itself. HEY PAUL!"
-
Phish is great.
But I think in 10 years if Breakfast keeps it up... it could be a close call.
Overall Bfast are better at their instruments and probably close to tied for amount of epic tunes. Give it time.. best band ever.
-
Phish is a bunch of quitters who wouldn\'t even have made it this far
w/o GD being around.
-
phish obviously.
-
I would say pearl jam, but that is because they are my favorite band, have been touring 20 years strong, were a big part of a movement in music history in the early 90\'s, etc...
-
what about The Doors?

Huey Lewis and The News
we have a winner!
-
not sure which is the best band ever, but i\'m pretty damn certain it doesn\'t feature billy corgan...
-
Huey Lewis and The News
Ha..my second runner up.....Jacob\'s Ladder could be the best song ever written...that or Hearth and Soul...
-
Huey Lewis and The News

Quick answer....Phish...
Long emotional answer Psychedelic Breakfast/The Breakfast. They are a band, which after over a decade together with minimal member changes, still keeps getting better and better. Not to mention they are local boys, whom I\'ve become great friends with, not to mention all the friendships that have grown
(and keep growing) from the within Breakfast family circle......That is why Psychedelic Breakfast is the best band ever....To Me...

Live Act? GRATEFUL DEAD
Hands down. During their time they played to more people than anyone ever. Filled STADIUMS for nearly 2 decades and influence musicians to this day with their musical legacy.
-
So I\'m thinking, a bunch of bands could be the greatest band of all time.
Like a few drummers in Africa in 328 B.C. could have been just about the greatest band of all time.
Or maybe Phish was the greatest band of all time?
Original Smashing Pumpkins line-up or maybe Billy Corgan with Spirits in the Sky is better because it\'s currently more relevant.
So if the greatest band of all time is a concept that exists on something like a quantum field of possiblity, maybe The Breakfast is the greatest band of all time as well.
I enjoy the music.
