Recently Archive has simplified the uploading process tremendously so I have finally been able to get some shows up. Before then it seemed so complicated I just didn\'t want to bother. It still is a bit of a hassle but if I can do it anyone should be able to. I agree with Dave Peck\'s comment on another thread here about people leaving reviews when they listen or download a show off LMA to leave their feedback. First off it looks good on Archive for the band to have reviews and also is appreciated by whomever is doing the taping, transfering and uploading of the show for the enjoyment of everyone else. I know I go back to see if anyone is leaving a comment on shows of mine on LMA. No one has BTW.

I get the feeling some of you still moaning about the Oggs don\'t realize I also uploaded an MP3 version ? The only problems with the ZIP files were because I didn\'t realize at first Microsoft Windows can\'t have "*, >" characters in file names. So I uploaded it again without that. Because I\'m actually a pretty nice guy don\'tcha know.

Check the 1st post again.

In the future I will be uploading Oggs, Flacs, and Mp3s. Just like I did for this one... (FLACs aren\'t uploaded yet because I\'ve been busy but they exist).

Sort of confused what anybody is really complaining about at all. Thought I had done people a favor here and done a fairly competent job at doing it.

Thanks to those who enjoyed it. Complainers need to find a new hobby. peace!

7 zip is a good, free program to extract .rar files. winrar works too. they are (basically) zipped files you need to unzip to hear.

By the way, tech wizards on board--and no need to go into extreme detail in explaining to my very simple mind, what are .rar files and how come i can never hear them ? is there a program i have not that transcribes them, as the wizard turns lead into gold?

I wholeheartedly agree mp3 is doing no good for live records but the average person don\'t give 2 ****.

I for one would like to see the flacs make it over to the archive(I can help if needed) and then they derive all the mp3s and such from the original file.

Its just me, but the music is totally worth the effort.

The CD "Red Book" standard is 16 bits per sample.  24 is more/better, and yes, it is technically a loss when you downconvert.  

The bit rate is 1411.2 kbit/s:

2 channels x 44,100 samples per second per channel ? 16 bits per sample = 1,411,200 bit/s = 1,411.2 kbit/s.

To confuse matters more, you can intentionally add random noise in the process (dither).

Compression is lossy when you cannot get back to the same original.  If you use a lossless compression routine, e.g. FLAC, on a 24-bit WAV, you\'d get back the same 24-bit WAV file when you de-compress it.

I\'ve been wondering this for a while:  If flac and wav are Lossless formats, why isn\'t that a set bitrate?  Meaning why is 24 bit wav superior to 16 or 8 bit wav?  Is anything Lost when going from a 24 bit wav file to a 16 bit?  or am I comparing different things, i.e. the 24 bit sampling refers to fidelity vs mp3 bitrate referring to % compression.

i just made myself far more confused by asking that.

Tuna, upload the flacs to archive.  as a taper that should be your responsibility or give them to someone who can do it properly.

then offer a megaupload upload in mp3/ogg for those that like the single file download.

i run media monkey, so there\'s no issue there. but my ipod wouldn\'t play .ogg, so i had to convert to mp3. since going to wav from a lossy format didn\'t make much sense to me, i just went straight to mp3. its not the worst thing in the world, except for the degredation of sound quality. and, like matt said, without the original lossless files being released, there\'s no way to avoid having an extra lossy generation.

Too much work to listen to a show... In the time it would take to do that, I could download 3 Raq shows... That being said, because of the lack of TB shows being circulated, my attention has moved in the Raq direction after listening to the 2001-01-24 show... I\'d much rather listen to TB, but with noting new coming out, that\'s where I\'ve kind of headed...

in my opinion.

Tapers should be recording and uploading original lossless audio in flac and uploading to archive first.

Then anybody can convert it to any format or religion they want.

I don\'t know but doesn\'t archive convert the flacs to Ogg Vorbis and VBR MP3?

Matt\'s got it right... however there are actually two reasons the OGG sounds better than the MP3.

1. Like Matt said, the OGG is 499kbps vs the MP3 at 320kbps.

But also, OGG Vorbis is simply a superior form of compressed audio compared to MP3. At the same bitrate, it will sound better. Same is true for WMA (Windows), M4A/AAC (Apple), or MP4. All will give a higher resolution waveform than MP3 at the same bitrate.

Really the only reason people still use MP3s is because they want the same file extension as their old songs they downloaded from Napster used in 1998.

The reason I choose Ogg Vorbis over WMA / AAC / M4A / MP4 is simple. All those other formats are proprietary, either being designed for a specific operating system or requiring a paid license to legally encode with.

Ogg Vorbis not only happens to be the best form of compressed audio, but it\'s also free (like FLAC, and unlike WAV -- a Microsoft proprietary format).

Ogg Vorbis is also a format that will be seen well into the future. The future of embedded video on the internet is Theora video... YouTube I think is switching to this from Flash soon and everyone else is doing the same as it\'s going to be adopted into the HTML5 standards. Theora video is to OGG as MPEG video is to MP3/MP4.

Another comparison is JPEG vs PNG compressed images. JPEG is technically not free, and notorious for artifacting images (the visual equivilent of a poor compression algorithm). PNG look better, handle transparencies, and are a free format. The only reason JPEGs are still more common today is because Microsoft\'s Internet Explorer wasn\'t able to render PNGs until version 7.0.

So anyway, if you are having trouble playing OGGs, you can either choose to compromise and download the MP3s, or you can make the late switch to software that isn\'t loaded up with proprietary restrictions. iTunes being the most obvious example.

I recommend Songbird (http://www.getsongbird.com) ... available for Linux, Windows, and Mac ... it\'s pretty much the Firefox of music players. Looks a lot like iTunes too so you won\'t even skip a beat.

not necessarily true. whether its mp3 or ogg its a lossy format and will never sound good a the uncompressed original or lossless format.

so, the  lossy Encoding sound quality depends on the bit rate setting that it was encoded at.  

simply:

Lossless encoding(flac) = best(original) quality = largest file size
Highest (Mp3/ogg) bit rate encoding = good quality = larger file size
Lowest (Mp3/ogg) bit rate encoding = lower quality = smaller files size.

you have to unzip the entire folder, not the individual songs that may or may not show up in the folder after download. if you are still having trouble after the LMA there are other options. and 7zip is what i like cause its free and easy. plenty of other programs that do the same thing. just trying to help you be able to hear the audio.

bigmtskier... I am uploading the MP3 ZIP to sendspace again... this time having renamed the files within the archive to contain no ">", "*", spaces, or anything at all. So any operating system besides MSDOS with 8 character limitations should be able to handle these file names.

How many times do we have to go over this. There are both .ogg files zipped and mp3 files zipped posted on this thread. Personally the .ogg sounds better, and its sooo simple do download and unzip. Read my post #45. Free and easy and sounds superb.

Still waiting on a firm statement from the band re: if they currently want shows going on archive.org ... from what I\'ve heard they want more time to practice their new songs and its a bit of a wishy washy situation for now.

that\'s why i give mad props to the taping crew.  if downloading music is a PITA, imagine what it\'s like to get it there in the first place.  or all the bs the band has to go thru with load in/load out, soundcheck, etc. for each show!  

anyways, i predict/hope that downloading shows will become easier in the near future.  it is a relatively new thing, plenty of room for improvement.

cool im on ubuntu also. i use easytag to tag the files. it renames the file names to match the tags and i have it set to take out the >\'s

I was having the same problems/errors when extracting with winace. I then tried extracting with 7Zip as suggested above and had success. Try extracting the files with a different zip program than the one you used.

Well, after sleeping on it I got up and tried 7zip and it worked!!!

Thanks for recording - helluva set list not to have been taped, so much appreciated. These Zooms seem omnipresent now. Over here, talking amongst the small body of tapers I\'ve managed to meet, most seem to go for Edirols HR-09s, though the internal mics are a little too bassy to my ears.

Not got a chance to download this or the other show put up, but new Breakfast - will definitely get some of that: I want to hear Blessing, for a start! That\'s what\'s also great about live shows - you can hear the songs being worked up and tweaked before the next TB album. (BTW, proper CD if possible, please, guys - I prefer those round bits of plastic to downloads, which just don\'t feel like the \'real\' thing.)

in this scene, where they are trying to attract fans, having freely available audience recording is the norm. if they want to market themselves to a different fan base, then fine. but to get fans of jam music, the potential fans have to be able to download a show and give it a listen before they are willing to spend the money to go see the band and then the show itself influences their decision to buy the merch. to think otherwise is to show a complete lack of understanding of the audience they are trying (and most likely, given their musical style) to garner.

there are things the band can do to increase their income - from writing more accessible songs to playing more than a few gigs a month, to expanding their playing area. but alienating potential and existing fans is counter productive. should they release some of the better shows, in matrix form or with some post production work, for sale? absolutely. but to try to stop audience recordings is completely self defeating.

I never said no taping of shows.
There was hardly any tapers anyway.
I didn\'t think a taping policy was necessary.
I suggested the band approve if a show should be out for free download, or wait and post shows for sale.
This is a more professional approach for a band to present itself,
rather than people taping shows and posting them for free download.
My feeling was the members of The Breakfast weren\'t in touch with all their music that was going out for free.
I felt the band should review all the taped shows and discuss amongst themselves what they should do with the show.
Scrap it, sell it, put it out for free?

We joke around so much on .info, nobody takes anybody seriously anymore.

The origional files (the .ogg) after downloaded only need to be unzipped and played in a program that handles .ogg. 7Zip is what i used to unzip, http://www.7-zip.org/download.html, and VLC to play them, http://www.videolan.org/vlc/, both programs are free and the audio sounds amazing!

No need to convert from OGG to MP3... I have like 8 different programs to play music and not one of them won\'t play OGG. I gave you guys a super common and free audio format @ 500kbps. I didn\'t save the tracks individually as WAVs or FLACs or I\'d have given you the links.

But I will make FLACs and MP3s for you anyway. Just because I\'d rather not have someone do a double-lossy conversion. But seriously, wake up call to how much iTunes sucks. Makes sense it\'s default encoder is proprietary iTunes-only ".m4a" but it won\'t even play OGG.

Shower time then I\'ll do that..

because to transcode it to mp3 causes people to go from one lossless format to another, thus degrading the overall quality. why not use the universal standard? why not put it up in lossless/wav format to begin with, then people can do whatever they want with it with out an extra lossy stage in between? its like putting it up in beta when everyone has a vhs...

and yes ken, your concept of stopping free trading of audience recording will, in fact, push away fans. the band\'s sales are down because their touring is down, because the overall number of shows are down, because their promotion is down and because nothing is occurring to increase the fanbase.

and your bfast/moe. comparisons are apples to oranges. bfast to max creek is much more applicable, for instance, as both bands relegate themselves to a finite audience base.

Audience Taping is permitted at almost all The Breakfast shows. I don\'t see a problem with the current method of taping and promotion of free tunage. If there we cd/dvds of shows at the merch table or online, ie. new years eve show, im sure the band would be making good money. So the solution lays in the hands of whoever can produce multiple copies of a show and take a modest percentage. I personally would gladly tape and reproduce any show I go to, if someone has equipment i can use. and i would give all profits to the band, and i have plenty of free "processing" time. and i even have a dvd burner. so lets quit bitchen and figure something out.

BTW - Thank you very much for this audio, i have shown several dozen friends who could not go to the mill street or the stone church and they love hearing the fresh audio. First live eschers etchings 5 copy ever! and an amazing one at that. If the live free audio was the issue there would hundreds of downloads, i think the aim should be toward physical promotion.

i guess since i\'m grading your haiku\'s, you can correct my spelling. the single most important thing that the grateful dead ever did to achieve the unique spot in the world that they did, was to allow taping and the FREE exchange of their music. many jambands including moe. and phish followed suit with great results. phish ( i believe) and others have moved on to selling their shows, while still allowing taping, to mixed results.  if any band member really believes that they are losing money from the free exchange of live shows, they are, in my humble opinion, misguided. i don\'t know, but i don\'t believe that is what they intended when they made their request to you. It is certainly NOT the reason they are hurting for cash. it IS the reason that many people know about them at all.

ken, sometimes your nonsensical ramblings are just too nonsensical.  the band asked you to cut down video taping and handing out free dvds at every show, never once did they ban taping and putting audience recordings on the archive to my knowledge.  no need to be the bearer of bad news when that news was never given to you to spread.

secondly what does moe. have to do with anyything?  they\'ve been a band for 20 years now and through lots of hard work and good grassroots and business practice have gained a solid following of loyal fans, but lets get real, 10,000 people do not show up to their shows, maybe their festivals but thats quite different.

its getting to the point where your obsessiveness on here is only pushing other fans away.  take a breather step back and relax.
