So are you going to say that all of the Lennon/McCartney co-written songs were all written by Lennon because Paul was too busy fixing his hair? Seriously, if you\'re going to make that claim, you can say that about any singer that\'s collaborated on writing a song...

Sure he sang some great songs, oh, and he sang on the highest selling album of all time. But lets not kid ourselves, he broke no ground musically, and he was totally the product of quincy jones. He wasn\'t a musician or a songwriter, he was an entertainer.
You may want to actually look at his bio. The guy was a prolific song writer
He was the lead song writer for the Jackson 5 / jacksons from the 70\'s - 80\'s. He co wrote "We are the world" which help rasie 50 million dollars for African hunger relief.
"Written and Composed by Michael Jackson" is pretty epic if you look at his album credits here is a wiki list of some of the songs he wrote
And he most def. composed the music and vocal arrangements for most of his stuff.
You may or may not like the guys music but to deny his prolific writing and composing is silly.
And he def. did break ground. you may not appreciate it as it isn\'t your thing, but disco and r&b etc the guy influenced most if not all the POP and R&B folks of today. YOU may not liek that music but you would be in the minority.
He is very similar to Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, smokie robinson and guys like that.
I simply don\'t believe it.
Billy Jean.... collaborator Nelson Hayes...the song was mixed 91 times by Bruce Swedien before it was finalized. Other people involved with Thriller songwriter Rod Temperton (who wrote Thriller), Paul McCartney (who wrote The Girl Is Mine), most of the band Toto, eddie van halen...
Pop stars don\'t want to be considered just singers. Their ego\'s are too big for that.
backs my point up. Smooth Criminal written with some guy named John Barnes who wrote most of the album Bad with Micheal.
P.S. - I don\'t dislike Jackson\'s music. He\'s got a lot of great stuff that I\'ve enjoyed over the years. But lets be clear, this isn\'t a man that pined away at a piano over chord changes and lyrical structure... he spent most of the thriller recording session practicing his dance moves.

It\'s amazing how people want to discredit his influence just because they don\'t listen to his music. I guess Ignorance is Bliss.

Just a couple tidbits about MJ that I\'d like to share:
- Created the bestselling album of "all time" - 13 Grammy Awards - 13 #1 singles in his solo career - 4 #1 sings with the jackson 5 - Third bestselling artist behind The Beatles and Elvis
I\'m not going to lie and say that I\'ve been a life long fan, I\'m not... But there was no bigger artist when I was growing up...

I deny that. I really do not believe most of the music I listen to today would call MJ a "profound" influence. most of the music profoundly influenced by him probably sucks worse than the original.

I like thriller. I can\'t think of any others.
Have to agree. Liked bits of the Thriller album as a young teenager, but as I got older it didn\'t do anything for me. It\'s just mass-produced teenie fodder. And I agree wholeheartedly about all the stupid screaming and crotch-grabbing.
I may be in the minority here, but IMHO he may have been an influence on black musicians to actually get up and perform, but given that for the last twenty years most "MOBO" music (ie [soulless] "soul", [C]rap and R[ubbish]\'n\' B[oring]) hasn\'t been worth listening to, was his influence a good thing???
And before I get the "racist" comments levelled at me, some of the greatest musicians ever to grace the planet were black - just as a starter, think of all the folk and bluesmen, then hendrix, Sammy Davis Junior, the true soul singers of the 60s like Otis and Aretha etc. It\'s just that more recently, ie since MJ\'s golden period onwards, with the exception of Prince and Franti, I have yet to hear any black act whose music actually does anything for me.
Micheal Jackson couldn\'t carry Princes yellow assless pants. Prince is was and always will be a better song writer, musician, producer, singer, dancer, basketball player and pancake cook then MJ ever dreamed of being.
And yet, I\'d still rather listen to popular MJ than popular Prince... About the only prince song I like is The Cross...

Say what you will, but if I\'m with a lady wanting to move I\'ll take a lot of his dance grooves before most others. Don\'t Stop \'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Workin\' Day And Night, Get On The Floor, Off The Wall, Wanna\' Be Startin\' Somethin\', Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, and (especially) P.Y.T. are classic dance tunes. Again, I don\'t give a **** that he\'s dead, I think it\'s for the better. But with death comes review, and he was famous for his music and entertainment. He was the **** on stage, and was almost always backed by a live band.
Also, if it weren\'t for MJ there would be no Jamiroquai, and that, my friends, would **** suck. Stevie Wonder> Michael Jackson> Jamiroquai is how I look at it musically. Three gems on my playlist.

I just never liked his style. always thought it was weak. I remember being like 8 years old and laughing at one of his hit videos with my mom because it was so lame and he was such a freak.

OK, so MJ died - way too young, I know, but it\'s hardly like he influenced any musicians - singers, perhaps, but his death is by no means as sad as the passings of hendirix or jerry.
And also in this great houha, everyone seems to have misse the fact that Sky Saxon died yesterday too. Now that guy was a true performer, who at 63 years old, insisted on playing his show on Saturday, before being admitted to hospital on Monday. When did MJ last perform for his fans?
I\'m positive Michael influenced more than singers and the average person on the street would not know of Jerry, may know of Hendrix but most would know of Michael Jackson.
His influence is so immense that even though it\'s been YEARS since he last performed his death still causes the reaction we have seen.
Just a few cool quotes from various sources...random rock/music personalities commenting on MJs passing.
VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen: "I am really shocked; as I\'m sure the world is, to hear the news. I had the pleasure of working with Michael on \'Beat It\' back in \'83 ? one of my fondest memories in my career. Michael will be missed and may he rest in peace."
QUEEN guitarist Brian May: "Hard to know what to say ? what to feel. I find myself wondering what might have happened on his tour... The number of dates in the U.K. that he had committed to was insane. I did have a feeling it was impossible, but I was so shocked to hear that he went so suddenly. Very sad. Of course, I still think of him as a boy ? he used to come and see us (QUEEN) play when we were on tour in the States, and he and Freddie [Mercury] became close friends, close enough to record a couple of tracks together at Michael\'s house. Tracks which have never seen the light of day. Michael was the boy star of the JACKSON FIVE, and always the most screamed at. I remember in their show, they tried very hard to make all the brothers equal in the presentation, but it was abundantly obvious that all most of the girl fans really wanted to see was little Michael. It was Michael who heard our track \'Another One Bites the Dust\' when he came to see us on \'The Game\' tour ... and told us we were mad if we didn\'t release it as a single." [Read more of May\'s thoughts at BrianMay.com]
POISON drummer Rikki Rockett: "Michael Jackson ? huge loss!!! The words genius and musical are used in the same sentence too often. Not in the case of Michael Jackson. His musical expression will never be topped and his inspiration will live forever. R.I.P."
SHINEDOWN guitarist Zach Myers: "Sitting in a dressing room in Calgary, Canada I am more saddened than I can remember in maybe the last five years. Call the guy whatever you want... judge his actions, judge his judgments, and judge the man any way in any language you want. But Michael Jackson was the best. There was no one better. There never will be anyone better. People don?t try anymore. You can take any pretty loser who can\'t sing who has a good smile and sells records and make him a star. Just look at ANYONE on the charts today. Today we lost a part of music history, a legend, and the greatest pop music artist there ever will be. The things Michael created on \'Thriller\', \'Off The Wall\' and \'Bad\' will never be matched. By anyone ever. Michael Jackson was the best. People believed in Michael Jackson who didn\'t believe in Jesus. And that, my friends, is a legend. God bless Michael Jackson\'s music, his soul, and his legend. That can never be replaced. Rest in peace, sir. God bless your soul."

Anything from "Off the Wall" and "Thriller" are all time classics, who can deny that? I love, love love "PYT," "Beat It," "Get On the Floor." So many gems after that too, "Man in the Mirror," "The Way You Make Me Feel." Even the Jackson 5 songs are awesome too..."I\'ll Be There," "Dancing MAchine." I really hope they play the Jackson 5 Movie sometime again.
Yeah he was a freak at the end of his life but he had the best dance moves and the best pop songs EVER. I\'m watching MTV right now and they are playing all of his videos.
So crazy. Yesterday, the top story on the 1:00 news in LA was about Farrah Fawcett. My boyfriend and I went out after that and took a walk for 5 hours. On the way back to his house, we walked by a T-Shirt company and they had a shirt made that said "Never Forget" w/ MJ\'s Mugshot (from the most recent molestation trial). We thought it was funny but had no clue he was dead. Then we get back to his house and find out he died and its the top story for the rest of the day right after. RIP King of Pop.

I won\'t miss Michael as if it\'s something new, I\'ve missed him since I was 8 or 9. Homeboy has been a lost cause for way too long. This is a good thing, imo. No more bullshit and just the great music to be spun over and over like it always has been.

Legendary entertainer. Powerful singing voice, and a trend setting dancer.
20 years ago when corey felman incorporated jackson moves into a dance scene in "dream a little dream", I thought it was a little bit stupid... but you still see those dance moves today and I\'m sure you will for many years.
As with most Pop stars from Elvis to Jackson, Madonna, and the current crop, the real musical talent lies with the producer. The further Jackson got from Quincy, the more his star faded.

Never really saw him play an instrument. Considering he wrote some memorable riffs, never once saw him play an instrument. Assume he would\'ve been sued like **** if someone else wrote the music, but seems odd... Anyone know how this worked?
As for his personal life- dude was clearly **** up. The man had problems. If you draw negative attention for relationships with children, a sane person keeps clear of that ****. He was having sleepovers with 10 year olds in the wake of child molestation charges. That ain\'t right. No matter how you look at.
In the end I think his death was for the best. I think he was a tormented soul, and despite all of the money and material things, I don\'t think he was ever really happy. This was the only way for him to be at peace.
The man was talented. The man was mentally ill. I truly have sympathy for him having to suffer through a life of mental illness. That said, acting on any impulses, from sickness or otherwise is inexcusable. Deviation from the norm is a burden, but it becomes criminal when that burden is placed on to a victim. When that victim is a child it is not only criminal, but dispicable.
May his soul find peace. Good riddance to him on this earth.

Truly one of the greatest performers of my lifetime.
His music has lifted me when sad and his dancing was always a joy to watch.
Growing up on the Jackson 5 and watching Michael blossom into the smoothest cat around.
Who of you my age can ever forget the first time you saw the Thriller video, how many remember how **** cool he was in Billie Jean?
Damn remember Eddie Van Halen soloing in Beat It?
I have not listened to anything new from him since Black or White but I have remained a fan of his.
Sure he was accused of some pretty horrid **** but some of those claims have been proven false and NONE have been proven true.
RIP Michael you will be missed by the entire world.

Thriller got played on my record player as a child almost non-stop. Before i hit double digits, he was it for me, along with Madonna.
but yeah... he was a weirdo. i wonder if more molested kids will come forward now....
I\'m more sad about Ed McMahon.

Michael will be missed, granted not everyone approved of his "personal life" it is not my place to judge anyone.

I was just having a conversation with my brother: "Famous people we won\'t hear about again until they die." Somehow, neither Michael nor Farrah Fawcett came up. My pick was "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes.
