Maybe someone who owns most of their albums may be able to make more of an educated evaluation of the band than your Sandy Eggin\' ass. Maybe next you can tell me how to find the all the cool places to hang out in Connecticut? Or maybe you can come tell me how to do my job too? Okay we get it, this band isn\'t your cup of tea. Just giving my opinion and observations about the band and having them relentlessly scrutinized. I would never listen to Of Montreal and cry. There\'s nothing in their entire repertoire that could do that.

I clicked on the second link which was a Rolling Stone article and read down to the second paragraph. Not that Rolling Stone is a credible source or anything but I swear I did not ready this article until just now. Here is a direct quote....

Maybe someone who owns most of their albums may be able to make more of an educated evaluation of the band than your Sandy Eggin\' ass. Maybe next you can tell me how to find the all the cool places to hang out in Connecticut? Or maybe you can come tell me how to do my job too? Okay we get it, this band isn\'t your cup of tea. No I doubt that at all because that evaluation would most likely be very very biased seeing as that person owned all the albums.
I\'m just saying you\'ve compared the Lead Singer to Prince and the band\'s lyrics to the Beach Boys. Yeah your credibility is not suspect at all.

I\'m not saying Barnes is the second coming of Brian Wilson. I\'m saying it reminds me of them. Probably more the vocal layering than anything. oM isn\'t surfy like BB. Again I refer back to Satanic Panic, 2nd track, Lysergic Bliss, the vocal layering on that song is a nice example. Also the use of several different sounds early on in that track is a lot like some of the break downs in the 60\'s version of Smile, namely in Heroes and Villains part 2. But i guess tons of bands are doing things like this these days.
Another comparison I would make is if you listen to early songs by them, they are very twee pop, which roots itself in Byrds like rock pop. Now they are way more funky so I can see where my comparison doesn\'t ring true.
Then again, maybe my comparisons are the random associations of a syphilitic brain. I\'m not a rock critic, at least not professionally, but I do listen to a lot of music. So take my opinion and evaluations what for what they are worth, nothing since you can get them for free right here in this thread. Or if you come up to me at a show, I will readily ramble on about any asinine subject we see fit.

As this was my first OM show, I cannot comment on show-to-show consistency. It\'s unfortunate to hear from serious fans that they are not consistent. However, what I can say is that they definitely were not "off" in Boston at all on the night after Toad\'s. I know the songs very well and they didn\'t miss a thing. I\'m sure they were using the same "stripped down" setup from night to night, but at The Paradise (much smaller than Toad\'s) this setup pwn3d the entire room. They had 30 feet of projector screens behind 20 feet of stage, so that entire side of the club was mind-bending. The house light show is more than adequate to fill the whole room, and they were rocking that plus some of their own lights on the stage. A 5 person band fills the stage quite nicely at The Paradise, then you throw in all the extra performers and the stage was packed with action. I could see how the same setup wouldn\'t overtake Toad\'s, but at The Paradise it was awesome.

its a pretty good size, didnt see too much security when i went there.... i thought the sound was average at best, but i was standing on the side balcony... there is a 2nd level balcony which looked like a great spot too, we got there a bit late so we didnt have time to scope out a good location, i think that is important. i am terrible at estimating capacity but i\'d say 2-3x toads place ?

we all had an amazing time...
huge preparty at my place down the street, which included drinks, shots, and great friends of mine (all of whom i introduced to the band)... an amazing show in which i heard a huge chunk of my favorite album (including my best friends favorite song she was hoping for!), our whole herd was raging that show harder than all the cynical hipsters surrounding us... followed by a sweet late-night celebration back at my place.... gin bucket plus some euphoric substances.... it was the most fun i\'ve had at a show in CT in a long long long long long time.....
... shows are what you make of them, and that night was simply perfect. surrounded by my close friends & my soul mate.... ahhh..... i have goosebumps again!

wolfman, fantastic piece, i\'m so glad to hear you enjoyed yourself! i\'ve hyped this band to so many people, sometimes i worry about being so careless with something that means so much to me.
kevin barnes is a crazy, crazy dude, and of montreal is the creation that sprung out of his mind, which makes me absolutely love him and his brain. i can relate to his neurotic attention to detail and the way in which he expresses it.... i can appreciate those small technicalities and thats why i love them so much; furthermore, i think thats why the most interesting and inspired people in my life are equally as captivated by this band as i am...

Saw my first Of Montreal show Monday night in Boston. Killer show. The music and the persona certainly make for interesting discussion.
However, as a marketing guy, I have to say I am blown away by the sophistication and consistency of the branding that Of Montreal has working for them. Absolutely every detail is in line and tells the Of Montreal story. The music, the lyrics, the album art, the projections, the outfits, the extra performers on stage, the merch, the merch girl, even the paint job on the tour bus...everything you can touch, see, or hear that involves this band has been carefully selected and arranged. They have some very, very sharp people organizing this act.
I first noticed this when I purchased the albums Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping at the same time and saw the obvious consistency between the album art. The newer album (Skeletal Lamping) takes the same motif one step farther than the previous album. Then when you see the band live it all comes together. The projectors behind the band feature the same art as the albums. The band dresses like the people in the projections. The album art depicts things that happen in the songs. The extra performers on stage act out what happens in the songs. The performers all look like they could be brothers and sisters. The designs on all the merch are tied into everything. Even the damn tour bus is hot purple with a light purple spiral design; it\'s not just any stark black or maroon tour bus. Overall it\'s the most thoroughly put together band brand I\'ve seen in a long time. This is what is driving their growth.
I had chained my bike up to a parking meter right in front of the bus. As I was unchaining to go home, someone came out of the bus. I struck up a conversation. Turns out he is the band\'s artist, and he is always on the road with the band. Read that again. This band takes their artist on the road to every show. His primary role is to make sure everything at every show is consistent from an artistic standpoint, from the lights to the merch table to the personal appearance of every person associated with the band. This is no joke. These guys take their art and brand extremely seriously, and it is working.
I think their Bonnaroo show will be ginormous.

Actually, over the winter, i gave her their last album a listen. I did enjoy some of the music when i really dug into the lyric content. I personally loved Nonpareil of favor. i even gave it a listen right now. However, from looking at videos online, i could almost do without the theatrics.....
and that picture is still hysterical, no matter what their music sounds like.

but i still love it. i only really know the three most recent albums, but i think they\'re all fantastic (i\'ve heard their earlier albums are on par or better). \'sunlandic twins\' is good pop rock (plus it has the outback steakhouse song!). the next album, \'hissing fauna...\' is a total departure and shows some truly emotional song writing. the most recent album, \'skeletal lamping\' is truly a faggy album. after the first couple listens, i was extremely disappointed except for a couple songs. way too much going on...too many changes...and super gay. well, the album grew on me and it was the only thing i listened to for a couple solid weeks. there are probably many reasons not to like them, but their look shouldn\'t be one of them

I expected the lyrics to be more abstract. I thought there was a lot of straight forward story telling. I\'m a guy who often doesn\'t get a lot of art, but I felt like the music, the lyrics, the costumes, the screens in the background all worked together and the songs weren\'t hard to follow even though I was hearing them for the first time. Though some of you hardcores told me this was one of their most straight forward performances, minus alot of the theatrics I\'m not such a fan of.
Something else they reminded me of- early/mid 90\'s Butthole Surfers shows. If you enjoyed them, you should at least see of Montreal.

I had never even heard of this band other than here. So I checked out some Youtube and oh **** that stage show is the gayest **** I have ever seen. Ever seen a Gay Pride parade? It was gayer than that. That being said I checked out some studio stuff and yep still very gay but solid pop rock. I can see how they would be popular in the pseudo-intellectual hipster indie scene.

I liked their show better than I thought I would. It wasn\'t nearly as gay as I expected either. Don\'t think I\'d bother listening to it without the visual of the show, but sure as hell better than anything on tv last night. Parts of it reminded me alot of early PFunk.
