It\'s even worse than it appears.

For the record I didn\'t create this thread either. I don\'t need to create threads to bash bands, some mod split this out of a thread

If I wanna make fun of a band I don\'t like I\'ll just do it anywhere.

The name of the band is because the guy got dumped by some smart chick who was from Montreal.
Really affected him by the looks of it.

forced him to create a trans-gender alter ego, georgie fruit. i almost wish i was making that up

I don\'t think those two things are related.  This band has been around since the mid 90\'s and the band name was decided then.  He was not Georgie Fruit at the time.  Georgie Fruit was actually realized during the album before skeletal lamping, Hissing Fauna are you the destroyer?.  That like 11 minute tripped out angry synthesizer song about 2/3 of the way through the album is actually supposed to represent Kevin Barnes transformation into the alter-ego Georgie Fruit.

And Georgie Fruit is really just Prince if you ask me.  It\'s a way for him to be sexually ambiguous, like Prince.  Supposedly Georgie Fruit is an ex-front man of a funk band from the seventies who had transgender surgery to turn him into a woman, then back into a man, back into a woman, then back into a man again.

I\'m a big fan of this band, too bad I was sick as hell on Sunday or I would have tried to check them out live.  I don\'t really care about the artsy stuff, I just think that Barnes can write some great songs.  Satanic Panic in the Attic is a great pop album and the way he\'s able to layer his own vocals is really incredible.  If you are to check out one album by this group that would definitely be the one i recommend.

At least Kevin Barnes isn\'t Scott Weiland, a wife beating heroine addict.  There are worse things to be than strange.

I hope no one asks you because you\'re wrong.
Prince has never been sexually ambiguous. He has been pretty clear from the start of his career he is all about the ****.

This dude in Of Montreal is clearly all about the **** now.

Which has nothing to do with his music I\'m sure.

How you can compare a Musical genius to this whiny popstar in ANY way is unfathomable to me.

You\'ve got me there, yes Prince is about the ****.  I guess what I meant by sexually ambiguous is the was way he dresses, etc.  Not really the way he lives his life behind closed doors.  Frankly that\'s not much of my business.

And I do know for a fact that Kevin Barnes like idolizes Prince.  He has said this in interviews.  The past 4 or so Of Montreal albums, (by the way all of them are pretty much entirely written and arranged and played by Kevin Barnes), have been vehicles for him to live out his Prince obsession.  So I guess that\'s where I make my comparison.

Really it\'s like 80\'s revival ****.  The guys looked like girls, the girls were where shoulder pads, down was up, up was down, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria!

Well that totally explains my distaste.
It wasn\'t that great the first time around.

Well Prince was.
When he rocked the **** out.

Oh well I\'m more referring to the artsy stuff being from the 80\'s.  The song writing is actually more like I dunno, Beach Boys?  Except w/ lots of books for lyrics and more synthesizers...  I dunno, progressive pop?

Well I watched a few of the clips Dave put up(could not make it through any of them) and Beach Boys? Really? Really?
"I **** your sister in an elevator in junior year " or some **** like that? Beach Boys?

Progressive Pop is there such a thing?
No this is just emo/pop rock made so this guy can get his angst and confusion out.

OK, I\'m not trying to convert you or anything man.  You can cherry-pick whatever you like out of the 5 minutes of footage you have seen and you suddenly are an expert on the band.  Like I said, Satanic Panic in the Attic.  Check that album out, but I doubt you want to because you have already made up your mind.

Maybe someone who owns most of their albums may be able to make more of an educated evaluation of the band than your Sandy Eggin\' ass. Maybe next you can tell me how to find the all the cool places to hang out in Connecticut?  Or maybe you can come tell me how to do my job too?  Okay we get it, this band isn\'t your cup of tea.  Isn\'t there anything to do in Cali?  I\'m sick, what\'s your excuse?  :D

No I doubt that at all because that evaluation would most likely be very very biased seeing as that person owned all the albums.

I\'m just saying you\'ve compared the Lead Singer to Prince and the band\'s lyrics to the Beach Boys.
Yeah your credibility is not suspect at all.

You seem upset I don\'t like the band. So sorry. Put on one of their albums and have a good cry.

Dude not upset at all about how you feel about the band.  Not even upset at your dickishness.  And I\'m not even upset that we\'ve somehow messed up the lines of communication enough for you to think that I am comparing the lyrics of oM to the lyrics of The Beach Boys.  Just giving my opinion and observations about the band and having them relentlessly scrutinized.  I would never listen to Of Montreal and cry.  There\'s nothing in their entire repertoire that could do that.

Oh and by the way, this is going to sound completely ridiculous but I just search Kevin Barnes and Prince in Google just for **** and giggles.  I clicked on the second link which was a Rolling Stone article and read down to the second paragraph.  Not that Rolling Stone is a credible source or anything but I swear I did not ready this article until just now.  Here is a direct quote....

Quote from: Rolling Stone
As with the last two Of Montreal records, Barnes recorded Skeletal Lamping (the title came to him after reading a Dylan Thomas poem) at home on his computer. An idea-packed pastiche inspired by Brian Wilson\'s SMiLE and Prince\'s Sign o\' the Times, Lamping boosts the group\'s oddball pop with its polyperverse, sexed-up lyrics and kitchen-sink range ? from hip-hop and disco to freaked-out soul and Stones-y blues.

At least I know if I\'m crazy for making these connections, I won\'t be alone in the asylum.

Seriously, I just came into an Of Montreal thread, started talking about the band.  I didn\'t come to gang up on you or anything.  I\'m just trying to have a good time here folks, it is after all an interweb type thingy.  In the Grand Scheme, not all that big a deal.

Well I have to give you credit. You hung in there, stated your case and after almost losing your temper got it together and kept at it. You even gave some credence to your point about The Beach Boys and Prince though the source is very suspect at least you had a source.

Kudos for putting up with my dickishness(that made me ). I still think it\'s a bunch of shitty gay influenced pop but that\'s just my opinion.

Peace Died Tye it was an informative discussion on your part. Thanx.

Peace out!

You too man!!!  Talk to you later, my friend.

The song writing is actually more like I dunno, Beach Boys?  Except w/ lots of books for lyrics and more synthesizers...

Beach boys???  Beach boys?? I don\'t know.    That seems like thats stretching it.

They do remind me of one the bands you\'d see on the elephant six record label...

I\'m not saying Barnes is the second coming of Brian Wilson.  I\'m saying it reminds me of them.  Probably more the vocal layering than anything.  oM isn\'t surfy like BB.  Again I refer back to Satanic Panic, 2nd track, Lysergic Bliss, the vocal layering on that song is a nice example.  Also the use of several different sounds early on in that track is a lot like some of the break downs in the 60\'s version of Smile, namely in Heroes and Villains part 2.  But i guess tons of bands are doing things like this these days.

Another comparison I would make is if you listen to early songs by them, they are very twee pop, which roots itself in Byrds like rock pop.  Now they are way more funky so I can see where my comparison doesn\'t ring true.

Then again, maybe my comparisons are the random associations of a syphilitic brain.  I\'m not a rock critic, at least not professionally, but I do listen to a lot of music.  So take my opinion and evaluations what for what they are worth, nothing since you can get them for free right here in this thread.   Or if you come up to me at a show, I will readily ramble on about any asinine subject we see fit.

Really? Really?

Yeah, settling .info squabbles face to face is really more her department.  I\'m far more likely to buy someone a drink than "square up".  Even if in Leith\'s case it\'s an over garnished cosmopolitan, I\'d buy him a drink just the same.  :)

As this was my first OM show, I cannot comment on show-to-show consistency.  It\'s unfortunate to hear from serious fans that they are not consistent.  However, what I can say is that they definitely were not "off" in Boston at all on the night after Toad\'s.  I know the songs very well and they didn\'t miss a thing.  I\'m sure they were using the same "stripped down" setup from night to night, but at The Paradise (much smaller than Toad\'s) this setup pwn3d the entire room.  They had 30 feet of projector screens behind 20 feet of stage, so that entire side of the club was mind-bending.  The house light show is more than adequate to fill the whole room, and they were rocking that plus some of their own lights on the stage.  A 5 person band fills the stage quite nicely at The Paradise, then you throw in all the extra performers and the stage was packed with action.  I could see how the same setup wouldn\'t overtake Toad\'s, but at The Paradise it was awesome.

pretty sweet. holds 700 maybe. security? what security? drink prices you\'d expect (more expensive than you\'d like). their bathrooms have super hot water. overall awesome place to see a show. especially for a band that\'s way too big to play there

It\'s def. smaller than Toad\'s.  I\'d say 500ish on capacity.  The balaconies give it a grand feel, but don\'t hold many people at all.

its a pretty good size, didnt see too much security when i went there.... i thought the sound was average at best, but i was standing on the side balcony... there is a 2nd level balcony which looked like a great spot too, we got there a bit late so we didnt have time to scope out a good location, i think that is important. i am terrible at estimating capacity but i\'d say 2-3x toads place ?

See, this is weird, cuz my buddy who\'s been mega-obsessed with Of Monteal probably as long as I\'ve been down with Breakfast said the Toad\'s show was totally wack and he might even like the band less now.

He probably could have used some better drugs?

i had a fantastic time at the toad\'s show, and it was one of the best days i can remember, but the band was off. way off. if it was phish and i was flub-counting, i would have lost track early on.

i liked the october shows i saw much better. they were a bigger band, had a much more elaborate stage, were tighter, and played about a half hour longer. they\'ve since stripped it down to a 5-piece, ditched a huge amount of their stage and theatrics, and cut down on showtimes.

i didn\'t have a bad time at all. i was pretty much glowing from beginning to end. but out of the 3 shows i\'ve seen, toad\'s was easily the worst.

but i\'d do it again in a heartbeat.

fair enough.... its luck you werent at the music hall of williamsburg in december. that was def the worst show i\'ve ever seen....

we all had an amazing time...

huge preparty at my place down the street, which included drinks, shots, and great friends of mine (all of whom i introduced to the band)... an amazing show in which i heard a huge chunk of my favorite album (including my best friends favorite song she was hoping for!), our whole herd was raging that show harder than all the cynical hipsters surrounding us... followed by a sweet late-night celebration back at my place.... gin bucket plus some euphoric substances.... it was the most fun i\'ve had at a show in CT in a long long long long long time.....

...  shows are what you make of them, and that night was simply perfect. surrounded by my close friends & my soul mate.... ahhh..... i have goosebumps again!

wolfman, fantastic piece, i\'m so glad to hear you enjoyed yourself! i\'ve hyped this band to so many people, sometimes i worry about being so careless with something that means so much to me.

kevin barnes is a crazy, crazy dude, and of montreal is the creation that sprung out of his mind, which makes me absolutely love him and his brain. i can relate to his neurotic attention to detail and the way in which he expresses it.... i can appreciate those small technicalities and thats why i love them so much; furthermore, i think thats why the most interesting and inspired people in my life are equally as captivated by this band as i am...

i\'ve been seeing shows since i was what, 10 years old? and of montreal absolutely raised the bar for me.... im really glad u got to see them wolfman, and even happier that you had such a positive experience! :)

Saw my first Of Montreal show Monday night in Boston.  Killer show.  The music and the persona certainly make for interesting discussion.

However, as a marketing guy, I have to say I am blown away by the sophistication and consistency of the branding that Of Montreal has working for them.  Absolutely every detail is in line and tells the Of Montreal story.  The music, the lyrics, the album art, the projections, the outfits, the extra performers on stage, the merch, the merch girl, even the paint job on the tour bus...everything you can touch, see, or hear that involves this band has been carefully selected and arranged.  They have some very, very sharp people organizing this act.

I first noticed this when I purchased the albums Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping at the same time and saw the obvious consistency between the album art.  The newer album (Skeletal Lamping) takes the same motif one step farther than the previous album.  Then when you see the band live it all comes together.  The projectors behind the band feature the same art as the albums.  The band dresses like the people in the projections.  The album art depicts things that happen in the songs.  The extra performers on stage act out what happens in the songs.  The performers all look like they could be brothers and sisters.  The designs on all the merch are tied into everything.  Even the damn tour bus is hot purple with a light purple spiral design; it\'s not just any stark black or maroon tour bus.  Overall it\'s the most thoroughly put together band brand I\'ve seen in a long time.  This is what is driving their growth.

I had chained my bike up to a parking meter right in front of the bus.  As I was unchaining to go home, someone came out of the bus.  I struck up a conversation.  Turns out he is the band\'s artist, and he is always on the road with the band.  Read that again.  This band takes their artist on the road to every show.  His primary role is to make sure everything at every show is consistent from an artistic standpoint, from the lights to the merch table to the personal appearance of every person associated with the band.  This is no joke.  These guys take their art and brand extremely seriously, and it is working.

I think their Bonnaroo show will be ginormous.

Actually, over the winter, i gave her their last album a listen.  I did enjoy some of the music when i really dug into the lyric content.  I personally loved Nonpareil of favor.  i even gave it a listen right now.   However, from looking at videos online, i could almost do without the theatrics.....

and that picture is still hysterical, no matter what their music sounds like.

kevin barnes\' description of the Skeletal Lamping

"This record is my attempt to bring all of my puzzling, contradicting, disturbing, humorous...fantasies, ruminations and observations to the surface, so that I can better dissect and understand their reason for being in my head. Hence the title, Skeletal Lamping. Lamping is the name of a hunting technique where hunters go into the forest at night, flood an area in light, then shoot or capture the animals as they panic and run from their hiding places."

seems like he hit it dead on.....

zuke\'s totally right....i mean honestly, at least listen to the music, don\'t just make fun of it because of how it looks.... it is *music*, remember? wtf? fuckin haters.

but i still love it. i only really know the three most recent albums, but i think they\'re all fantastic (i\'ve heard their earlier albums are on par or better). \'sunlandic twins\' is good pop rock (plus it has the outback steakhouse song!). the next album, \'hissing fauna...\' is a total departure and shows some truly emotional song writing. the most recent album, \'skeletal lamping\' is truly a faggy album. after the first couple listens, i was extremely disappointed except for a couple songs. way too  much going on...too many changes...and super gay. well, the album grew on me and it was the only thing i listened to for a couple solid weeks. there are probably many reasons not to like them, but their look shouldn\'t be one of them

maybe you should just get a dictionary out... you might understand the music better if u know what all those big words mean !!! and the literary allusions probably flew over your head too.

I expected the lyrics to be more abstract.  I thought there was a lot of straight forward story telling.  I\'m a guy who often doesn\'t get a lot of art, but I felt like the music, the lyrics, the costumes, the screens in the background all worked together and the songs weren\'t hard to follow even though I was hearing them for the first time.  Though some of you hardcores told me this was one of their most straight forward performances, minus alot of the theatrics I\'m not such a fan of.

Something else they reminded me of- early/mid 90\'s Butthole Surfers shows.  If you enjoyed them, you should at least see of Montreal.

I had never even heard of this band other than here.
So I checked out some Youtube and oh **** that stage show is the gayest **** I have ever seen.
Ever seen a Gay Pride parade? It was gayer than that.
That being said I checked out some studio stuff and yep still very gay but solid pop rock.
I can see how they would be popular in the pseudo-intellectual hipster indie scene.

I liked their show better than I thought I would.  It wasn\'t nearly as gay as I expected either.  Don\'t think I\'d bother listening to it without the visual of the show, but sure as hell better than anything on tv last night. Parts of it reminded me alot of early PFunk.

hahaha COOL

looks like the village people meets the mentally retarded people who got into the arts and crafts cabinet when teacher wasn\'t looking

which also summarizes the sound of their gay ass music.

Sorry I stepped on your foot

Probably one of the funnier introductions I\'ve had.

And all y\'all bitchin about this show.... go wear a fanny pack to an Of Montreal show or something. In some alternate dimension where it\'s cool to do those things.
