Has he written anything not for a movie that is famous?
I am not questioning his talent, I don\'t simply don\'t consider him as a "great composer."
From what I\'ve read online, all of his work has been for Film and Television. After Walt Disney he\'s the most nominated person in academy award history.
I see what you\'re saying about that line between composer and film score composer.
However, I think the quality of his scores earn him the great composer title. He\'s written what might be some of the most recognizable classical music.

How could you hate John Williams:
Themes for Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., Empire of the Sun, Schindler\'s List, Born on the 4th of July, Saving Private Ryan, Harry Potter and a slew other other great films.
With 5 Academy Awards, 20 Grammys, 4 Golden Globes and 2 Emmys you can\'t question his talent. I don\'t get it; what did he personally do to you?

I enjoyed the musical performances. Aretha was the right choice, but she\'s lost a step vocally over the years. She was very good, but not the dynamic vocalist she once was. The classical piece was spectacular. Beautifuly and inspiring and the musicians really looked like they were enjoying themselves.
absolutely. proving once again that John Williams is the man.
I thought the classical was beautiful and inspiring, but I also thought that it was Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaroon Copeland, not John Williams.
Aaron Copeland is the man.
It\'s "Simple Gifts", and "Air", written by John Williams especially for the inauguration
Quote from: Drew_Kingsley;217214
They did play Fanfare for the Common Man by Copeland at one point, but I\'m pretty sure the Irony Police put a stop to it, deciding that $120 million, four-day celebrations aren\'t usually held in celebration of the "common man".
Quote from: Yoda;217217
I thought I heard "Lord of the Dance" as a main theme. This a standard tune that we used to play at my RC youth group back in the day.
I believe that we are all hearing the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" and giving different names and authors to it.
Yes, yoda, lord of the dance is based off Simple Gifts, and it was intentionally used by copeland - along with a good number of other traditional folk songs - in Applician Spring.
I still hate John Williams.
from the wiki-gods:
Quote
"Simple Gifts" is an 1848 Shaker song by Elder Joseph Brackett.
It has endured many inaccurate descriptions. Though often classified as an anonymous Shaker hymn or as a work song, it is better classified as a dance song.

I found his speech fantastic. It was eloquently written, delivered with power, and its intentions believable (to me at least). So many points gave me chills, but this stood out as one of my favorites:
"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."
And so it begins..........
Agreed, great speech. It defenately gave me the chills a few times and may even have brought a tear to me eye.

but seriously OMS, how do you pull these things where you meet, dine, play, and party with famous musicians and other celebs?
to be honest, it\'s usually just people i know. the bonnaroo stuff was because i went with a band on the bill. one of the band member\'s girlfriend\'s father is the main lawyer for bonnaroo, radiohead, trey and others.
as for the inauguration stuff, i just had family or friends coming down who had extra tickets to all the events..didn\'t end up paying for anything other than some transportation. also didn\'t end up going to Biden\'s thing tonight..too sick from standing for hours today at the capitol in the freezing cold.

went to Arianna Huffington\'s ball last night at the Newseum (http://www.newseum.org/) where Sheryl Crow, will.i.am. and Sting performed. Got to meet Sting and Jesse Jackson.
today i went to the inauguration, was pretty close, incredibly moving few hours. the speech was inspiring.
tonight i should be going to Biden\'s Home States Ball where Obama will be speaking and Maroon 5 is performing. After that I randomly may be meeting up with Wyclef Jean..no joke.
DC has been great the past few days. everyone is incredibly happy and supportive of our new president.
Sounds like fun, imagine how fun it would be if you were old enough to drink!

Watched live from the cafeteria at Staples HQ with about 1000 people crammed in the caf. I guess it was kinda cool to be watching in the HQ of one of America\'s most powerful corporations with a big crowd. Good song by the classical musical allstars, very good speech by the Big O, and what the heck was on Aretha\'s head? haha good times. Way to go O. I rock with Barack. Let\'s do it!

Last time I checked after Pope John Paul II past away, we got Benedict. No matter how you feel at the Catholic religion, I would never put Chainey and Paul II in the same context; the man (Paul II) was a saint among the rest.

From my vp:
Quote
In an effort to make coverage of tomorrow’s historic inauguration available, we have made arrangements to have it playing in three places from 11:30 to 1:00 PM. The locations are
Amazon Conference Room Board Room Main Lobby
If you would like to view any part of the event please do so in one of these locations. Please do not use your company computer for this purpose as this will significantly slow down our network and could cause disruption to important business systems or even crash the network.
Please share this information with those who do not have email so they will know that this opportunity to watch history in the making is available
So we all gaterhed around these different areas of the building. I was watching from the front desk, and a fed ex guy showed up, looking a bit perplexed, and a few people called.
The friendly hr girl at the front desk whispered "Thank you for calling, how may I direct your call..."
Also the pictures of the crowd were amazing.
The speach was a bit meh, nothing he hadn\'t said before.
